Dynamic CT angiography provides haemodynamic assessment combined with detailed information on complex cardiac anatomy in patients with congenital malformations such as multistage correction of Fallot’s Pentalogy.

The record of glacier fluctuations in western Scandinavia, as reconstructed from continental data, has been correlated with records of ice-rafted detritus (IRD) from well-dated sediment cores from the Norwegian Sea covering the past 150,000 yr B.P. The input of IRD into the ocean is used as a proxy for ice sheet advances onto the shelf and, thus, for the calibration of a glaciation curve. The marine results generally support land-based reconstructions of glacier fluctuations and improve the time-control on glacial advances. The Saalian ice sheet decayed very rapidly approximately 125,000 yr B.P. In the Early Weichselian, a minor but significant IRD maximum indicates the presence of icebergs in isotope substage 5b (especially between 95,000 and 83,000 yr B.P.). Reduced amounts of calcareous nannofossils indicate that surface waters were influenced by meltwater discharges during isotope substages 5d and 5b. An extensive build-up of inland ice began again during isotope stage 4, but maximum glaciation was reached only in early stage 3 (58,000-53,000 yr B.P.). Marine sediments have minimum carbonate content, indicating strong dilution by lithogenic ice-rafted material. Generally, the IRD accumulation rate was considerably higher in stages 4-2 than in stage 5. A marked peak in IRD accumulation rates from 47,000 to 43,000 yr B.P. correlates well with a second Middle Weichselian ice sheet advance dated by the Laschamp/Olby paleomagnetic event. Minimum ice extent during the Ålesund interstade (38,500-32,500 yr B.P.) and several glacial oscillations during the Late Weichselian are also seen in the IRD record. Of several late Weichselian glacial oscillations on the shelf, at least four correspond to the North Atlantic Heinrich events. Ice sheet behavior was either coupled or linked by external forcing during these events, whereas internal ice sheet mechanisms may account for the noncoherent fluctuations.

A sensor which detects mechanical stresses and stores the position and the strength of these loads by color change of embedded quantum dots (QDs) is presented. The top and bottom electrodes of the sensor are inkjet-printed which leads to a fast and accurate deposition of thin (approx. 50 - 300 nm) and conductive layers. The used silver and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythio-phene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) inks are optimized in terms of printability and opportunities of functionality forming without influencing the active layer of the sensor. The active layer of the sensor is spin-coated and consists of the QDs embedded in semi-conducting poly(9-vinylcarba-zole) (PVK). The hole transport characteristic of PVK and the band level alignment of the used materials ensures the preferred injection of only one type of charge carrier into the QDs. As a result the mechanical stress is visualized by a decreasing in photoluminescence (PL) of the QDs.

The real-time electronic performance of a gallium nitride nanowire-based field effect transistor was investigated at five-minute intervals over thirty minutes of continuous irradiation by Xenon-124 relativistic heavy ions. An initial current surge that resulted in device improvement rather than device failure was observed. The current surge, and subsequent electronic behavior, was modeled using a combined thermionic emission-tunnelling approach, leading to information about barrier height, carrier concentrations, expected temperature behavior, and tunnelling.

In this paper we report about combining inkjet printing technology and self-assembly as a scalable manufacturing tool for spherical, well-ordered aggregates. The aggregates consist of a high number of ordered colloidal nanospheres arranged as ball-shaped structures. Applying inkjet printing based on the principle of droplet ejection the spherical aggregates can be deposited on various surfaces in dry environment and under ambient conditions. The aggregation of the nanospheres is independent of the surface energy of the substrate leading to the assumption that the main part of the assembly and aggregation process takes place in-flight [1].

By applying inkjet printing with an adapted control signal, small droplets of a water-based ink formulation containing monodisperse polystyrene nanoparticles are ejected out of the inkjet nozzles. The ejected droplets serve as a confined geometry for the nanospheres in the carrier liquid during evaporation. As a result, the particles form stable ball-shaped aggregates with hexagonal order. Due to the in-flight self-assembly of the nanospheres, our approach is suitable for any solid surface in dry environment and allows the deposition of the ball-shaped aggregates in appropriate patterns.

In this contribution, we report on the optimization of a metal-organic decomposition (MOD) ink based on silver(I) complexes by a systematic variation of the ink formulation. As a result, three different ink concepts turned out to be printable and resulting in a sufficiently high contour definition, layer homogeneity, and conductivity. The ink concepts include increase of the solid load, the usage of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a humectant with low vapor pressure, addition of co-solvents such as diethylene glycole and addition of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) as stabilizing ligand. It turns out that, for silver precursor concentrations of 40 wt%, the addition of 1 wt% SLS to aqueous inks leads to elevated conductivity up to 3.2x107 Sm-1 at maintained printability and an improved contour definition with respect to pure aqueous inks.

We report evidence for graphene layer rearrangements in heavy ion interactions with carbon onions at 140 MeV and 70 MeV per nucleon kinetic energies. Graphene layer rearrangements have been recently predicted in spherical and cylindrical multi-layer graphene systems. The implications of graphene layer rearrangement on the tribological performance of multi-layer nano-carbons in extreme environments are discussed.

Over 25 implementations of different functional languages are benchmarked using the same program, a floating-point intensive application taken from molecular biology. The principal aspects studied are compile time and execution time for the various implementations that were benchmarked. An important consideration is how the program can be modified and tuned to obtain maximal performance on each language implementation. With few exceptions, the compilers take a significant amount of time to compile this program, though most compilers were faster than the then current GNU C compiler (GCC version 2.5.8). Compilers that generate C or Lisp are often slower than those that generate native code directly: the cost of compiling the intermediate form is normally a large fraction of the total compilation time. There is no clear distinction between the runtime performance of eager and lazy implementations when appropriate annotations are used: lazy implementations have clearly come of age when it comes to implementing largely strict applications, such as the Pseudoknot program. The speed of C can be approached by some implementations, but to achieve this performance, special measures such as strictness annotations are required by non-strict implementations. The benchmark results have to be interpreted with care. Firstly, a benchmark based on a single program cannot cover a wide spectrum of ‘typical’ applications. Secondly, the compilers vary in the kind and level of optimisations offered, so the effort required to obtain an optimal version of the program is similarly varied.

Thin films (.1-.6 μm) of LiNbO3 have been deposited on silicon substrates by rf reactive sputtering. MFS (metal-ferroelectric-semiconductor) capacitor structures were created by a liftoff process which physically isolated small areas of LiNbO3. Standard MOS (metal-oxide-semiconductor) electrical characterization techniques were used to determine the resistivity and dielectric constant of the films. Short-circuit photocurrent measurements revealed both transient and steady state components attributed to a pyroelectric effect and a bulk photovoltaic effect respectively. The conduction processes in these films were examined and found to exhibit Frenkel-Poole characteristics. Ferroelectric switching at room temperature has also been observed in these films, however, the reversed orientation was not stable.

Thin films (.1-.6 μm) of LiNbO3 have been deposited on silicon substrates by reactive rf sputtering. Under optimized deposition conditions the resulting thin films of LiNbO3 were optically transparent, adhered well to the silicon substrates, and were found to be polycrystalline and uniaxial with the c axis oriented normal to the silicon surface. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to examine film morphology. Both methods indicated that the films were smooth and contained no gross irregularities. The ratio of oxygen to niobium in these films was measured by Rutherford backscattering to be approximately 3 to 1. Auger electron spectroscopy depth profiling revealed that the films had the expected ratio of Li, Nb, and O. This information, together with Bragg x-ray diffraction data, indicates that the thin films deposited on silicon were stoichiometric, crystalline LiNbO3.
