Ethnohistoric accounts indicate that the people of Australia's Channel Country engaged in activities rarely recorded elsewhere on the continent, including food storage, aquaculture and possible cultivation, yet there has been little archaeological fieldwork to verify these accounts. Here, the authors report on a collaborative research project initiated by the Mithaka people addressing this lack of archaeological investigation. The results show that Mithaka Country has a substantial and diverse archaeological record, including numerous large stone quarries, multiple ritual structures and substantial dwellings. Our archaeological research revealed unknown aspects, such as the scale of Mithaka quarrying, which could stimulate re-evaluation of Aboriginal socio-economic systems in parts of ancient Australia.
The first comprehensive collection on the subject of Hong Kong neo-noir cinema, this book examines the way Hong Kong has developed its own unique and culturally specific version of the neo-noir genre, while at the same time drawing on and adapting existing international noir cinemas.
A majority of transplanted organs come from donors after brain death (BD). Renal grafts from these donors have higher delayed graft function and lower long-term survival rates compared to living donors. We designed a novel porcine BD model to better delineate the incompletely understood inflammatory response to BD, hypothesizing that adhesion molecule pathways would be upregulated in BD.
Methods
Animals were anesthetized and instrumented with monitors and a balloon catheter, then randomized to control and BD groups. BD was induced by inflating the balloon catheter and animals were maintained for 6 hours. RNA was extracted from kidneys, and gene expression pattern was determined.
Results
In total, 902 gene pairs were differently expressed between groups. Eleven selected pathways were upregulated after BD, including cell adhesion molecules.
Conclusions
These results should be confirmed in human organ donors. Treatment strategies should target involved pathways and lessen the negative effects of BD on transplantable organs.
The articles collected here bear witness to the continued and wide interest in England and its neighbours in the "long" thirteenth century. The volume includes papers on the high politics of the thirteenth century, international relations, the administrative and governmental structures of medieval England and aspects of the wider societal and political context of the period. A particular theme of the papers is Anglo-French political history, and especially the ways in which that relationship was reflected in the diplomatic and dynastic arrangements associated with the Treaty of Paris, the 750th anniversary of which fell during 2009, a fact celebrated in this collection of essays and the Paris conference at which the original papers were first delivered.

Rapid thinning and velocity increase on major Greenland outlet glaciers during the last two decades may indicate that these glaciers became unstable as a consequence of the Jakobshavn effect (Hughes, 1986), with terminus retreat leading to increased discharge from the interior and consequent further thinning and retreat. To assess whether recent trends deviate from longer-term behavior, we measured glacier surface elevations and terminus positions for Jakobshavn Isbræ, West Greenland, using historical photographs acquired in 1944, 1953, 1959, 1964 and 1985. These results were combined with data from historical records, aerial photographs, ground surveys, airborne laser altimetry and field mapping of lateral moraines and trimlines, to reconstruct the history of changes since the Little Ice Age (LIA). We identified three periods of rapid thinning since the LIA: 1902–13, 1930–59 and 1999–present. During the first half of the 20th century, the calving front appears to have been grounded and it started to float during the late 1940s. The south and north tributaries exhibit different behavior. For example, the north tributary was thinning between 1959 and 1985 during a period when the calving front was stationary and the south tributary was in balance. The record of intermittent thinning, combined with changes in ice-marginal extent and position of the calving front, together with changes in velocity, imply that the behavior of the lower parts of this glacier represents a complex ice-dynamical response to local climate forcings and interactions with drainage from the interior.
Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) are responding to ocean–climate variability throughout the marine ecosystem of the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) where some breeding colonies have declined by 80%. Nuclear and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers were used to understand historical population genetic structure and gene flow given relatively recent and continuing reductions in sea ice habitats and changes in numbers of breeding adults at colonies throughout the WAP. Genetic diversity, spatial genetic structure, genetic signatures of fluctuations in population demography and gene flow were assessed in four regional Adélie penguin colonies. The analyses indicated little genetic structure overall based on bi-parentally inherited microsatellite markers (FST =-0.006–0.004). No significant variance was observed in overall haplotype frequency (mtDNA ΦST =0.017; P=0.112). Some comparisons with Charcot Island were significant, suggestive of female-biased philopatry. Estimates of gene flow based on a two-population coalescent model were asymmetrical from the species’ regional core to its northern range. Breeding Adélie penguins of the WAP are a panmictic population and hold adequate genetic diversity and dispersal capacity to be resilient to environmental change.
Bovine sex-sorted sperm have been commercialized and successfully used for the production of transgenic embryos of the desired sex through the sperm-mediated gene transfer (SMGT) technique. However, sex-sorted sperm show a reduced ability to internalize exogenous DNA. The interaction between sperm cells and the exogenous DNA has been reported in other species to be a CD4-like molecule-dependent process. The flow cytometry-based sex-sorting process subjects the spermatozoa to different stresses causing changes in the cell membrane. The aim of this study was to elucidate the relationship between the redistribution of CD4-like molecules and binding of exogenous DNA to sex-sorted bovine sperm. In the first set of experiments, the membrane phospholipid disorder and the redistribution of the CD4 were evaluated. The second set of experiments was conducted to investigate the effect of CD4 redistribution on the mechanism of binding of exogenous DNA to sperm cells and the efficiency of lipofection in sex-sorted bovine sperm. Sex-sorting procedure increased the membrane phospholipid disorder and induced the redistribution of CD4-like molecules. Both X-sorted and Y-sorted sperm had decreased DNA bound to membrane in comparison with the unsorted sperm; however, the binding of the exogenous DNA was significantly increased with the addition of liposomes. Moreover, we demonstrated that the number of sperm-bound exogenous DNA was decreased when these cells were preincubated with anti-bovine CD4 monoclonal antibody, supporting our hypothesis that CD4-like molecules indeed play a crucial role in the process of exogenous DNA/bovine sperm cells interaction.
The objective of this field research was to compare relative effectiveness and profitability of alternative herbicides applied to the same plots for four consecutive years for controlling and reducing dense Canada thistle infestations in no-till spring wheat. Chlorsulfuron at 30 g ai ha−1 plus nonionic surfactant or clopyralid plus 2,4-D at 70 plus 280 g ae ha−1, respectively, applied annually for 4 yr controlled Canada thistle and was more effective for gradually reducing Canada thistle stands than 2,4-D at 560 g ae ha−1, MCPA plus bromoxynil at 280 plus 280 g ae ha−1, or tribenuron at 20 g ai ha−1. Chlorsulfuron and clopyralid plus 2,4-D also controlled Canada thistle ≥ 90% earlier (by 2 yr) than other treatments. Stochastic dominance analysis, a form of economic analysis, predicted that either chlorsulfuron or clopyralid plus 2,4-D would be preferred by farmers to the untreated check, MCPA plus bromoxynil, or 2,4-D treatments. Chlorsulfuron also would be preferred to clopyralid plus 2,4-D by risk-neutral farmers, whereas clopyralid plus 2,4-D would be preferred to chlorsulfuron by highly risk-averse farmers, those who are most likely to pick only consistently effective herbicides.
The goal of this research was to determine whether crop management practices could substitute for a herbicide for managing mixed populations of green and yellow foxtail in hard red spring wheat. Crop yield and foxtail growth were measured in two years of field research in North Dakota. Spring wheat yields were as great or greater when early seeding date or 2× seeding rate were substituted for POST diclofop3 at 0.75 kg ai ha−1 for managing foxtail in spring wheat. Yield of spring wheat competing with foxtails was greater for the high seeding rate (2× = 270 kg ha−1) than both the normal (1× = 130 kg ha−1) and low (0.5× = 70 kg ha−1) seeding rates for early or middle seeding dates, but not for the late seeding date. For both early and middle seeding dates, wheat yield at the 2×seeding rate without diclofop was equal to or greater than that of the 1× seeding rate with diclofop. Late-seeded wheat did not yield well in competition with dense foxtail stands for any treatment combination. Early and middle seeding dates favored the relative increase of green foxtail over yellow foxtail in wheat, whereas late seeding favored yellow foxtail over green foxtail. Economic analysis demonstrated that early seeding date was the most critical factor in determining the stochastic dominance of treatments without diclofop over treatments with diclofop. Seeding rate was much less important than seeding date in determining the ranking of treatments in stochastic dominance analysis.
High herbicide costs and uncertainty about annual weed control at planting have limited adoption of no-till spring wheat production systems in the northern Great Plains. Chlorsulfuron, metsulfuron, and CGA-131036 at 10 to 20 g ai ha–1 plus nonionic surfactant generally controlled both emerged kochia and wild mustard equally well (>80%) whether or not combined with glyphosate at 250 g ha–1 plus nonionic surfactant. In two of three trials persistent phytotoxic residues of these sulfonylurea herbicides in soil controlled both weeds better in midseason and early summer 1 yr after treatment than did glyphosate, which has only foliar activity. While the absolute net returns of different treatments varied among herbicides, relative net returns were insensitive to changes in either herbicide or wheat price. Herbicide use tended to boost net returns for no-till spring wheat in years with good weather but depressed net returns in a drought year. Chlorsulfuron at 10 and 20 g ha–1 increased net returns in all three trials. Metsulfuron and combinations of either metsulfuron or chlorsulfuron with glyphosate had variable effects on net returns.
Implementation of an integrated weed management system requires prediction of the effect of weed competition on crop yield. Predicting outcomes of weed competition is complicated by genetic and environmental variation across years, locations, and management. Mechanistic models have the potential to account for this variability. Weed phenological development is an essential component of such models. Growth cabinet studies were conducted to characterize common ragweed's phenological response to temperature, photoperiod, and irradiance. Ragweed development occurred over a temperature range of 8.0 to 31.7 C, and this response to temperature was best characterized using a nonlinear function. A maximum leaf appearance rate of 1.02 leaves d−1 occurred at 31.7 C. Ragweed has a short juvenile phase, during which it was not sensitive to photoperiod. Following this juvenile phase, sensitivity to photoperiod was constant and continued until pistillate flowers were observed. Photoperiods of 14 h or less were optimal and resulted in maximum rates of development. Irradiance level affected ragweed phenological development only when combined with the additional stress of low temperatures. Data generated in this study can be used for the development of mechanistic weed competition models.
‘Film noir’ is now such a common term in cinematic analysis that another book on the subject, especially in its neo-noir development, may appear superfluous. Yet discoveries are occurring all the time, necessitating the rewriting of assumptions in film history, and this is especially true of other national cinemas, especially Japan and Korea, that have their own versions of noir and neo-noir. Despite the seeming redundancy of the term ‘national’ in an era of globalisation and transnational changes, the ‘local’ always adds some distinctive nuance to a style that may be borrowed from outside. Hence the importance of critical voices to define what distinctive nuances may exist especially in a supposedly globalised era. To cite any examples of national noir remains a problem since the national variations often reworked outside influences for their own particular concerns. Concerning three aspects of different national cinemas, America, Britain and France had their distinctive nuances and styles more often than not influenced by cultural and historical changes. Classical American film noir extended from 1940 to 1958, affected by the historical turmoil of wartime and post-war development. British film noir began earlier, in 1937, with The Green Cockatoo directed by the American William Cameron Menzies and photographed by Mutz Greenbaum (Max Greene), a refugee from Nazi Germany, with the story written by Graham Greene. Like its American counterpart, British film noir reflected post-war concerns, especially the beginning of the end of Empire, austerity, rising crime rates, and the developing problem of juvenile delinquency infected by what was then regarded as degraded American popular culture. French film noir had a more tortuous development. Influenced especially by French poetic realism initiated by Le Rue sans Nom (Pierre Chenal, 1934), the style really took offas a result of the humiliation of the French Occupation and continued into the post-war period, reaching a culmination in the work of Jean-Pierre Melville, who fought in the Resistance and the Free French Army. Hong Kong film noir had its own set of historical and cultural developments that go back to post-war Shanghai cinema and developed in its own particular way during many changes in Hong Kong society, as seen in Lung Kong's The Story of a Discharged Prisoner (1967), which influenced John Woo's A Better Tomorrow (1986) twenty years later.
