Changing practice patterns caused by the pandemic have created an urgent need for guidance in prescribing stimulants using telepsychiatry for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A notable spike in the prescribing of stimulants accompanied the suspension of the Ryan Haight Act, allowing the prescribing of stimulants without a face-to-face meeting. Competing forces both for and against prescribing ADHD stimulants by telepsychiatry have emerged, requiring guidelines to balance these factors. On the one hand, factors weighing in favor of increasing the availability of treatment for ADHD via telepsychiatry include enhanced access to care, reduction in the large number of untreated cases, and prevention of the known adverse outcomes of untreated ADHD. On the other hand, factors in favor of limiting telepsychiatry for ADHD include mitigating the possibility of exploiting telepsychiatry for profit or for misuse, abuse, and diversion of stimulants. This Expert Consensus Group has developed numerous specific guidelines and advocates for some flexibility in allowing telepsychiatry evaluations and treatment without an in-person evaluation to continue. These guidelines also recognize the need to give greater scrutiny to certain subpopulations, such as young adults without a prior diagnosis or treatment of ADHD who request immediate-release stimulants, which should increase the suspicion of possible medication diversion, misuse, or abuse. In such cases, nonstimulants, controlled-release stimulants, or psychosocial interventions should be prioritized. We encourage the use of outside informants to support the history, the use of rating scales, and having access to a hybrid model of both in-person and remote treatment.

The oxygen isotopic stage 5/4 boundary in deep-sea sediments marks a prominent interval of northern hemisphere ice-sheet growth that lasted about 10,000 yr. During much of this rapid ice growth, the North Atlantic Ocean from at least 40°N to 60°N maintained warm sea-surface temperatures, within 1° to 2°C of today's subpolar ocean. This oceanic warmth provided a local source of moisture for ice-sheet accretion on the adjacent continents. The unusually strong thermal gradient off the east coast of North America (an “interglacial” ocean alongside a “glacial” land mass) also should have directed low-pressure storms from warm southern latitudes north-ward toward the Laurentide Ice Sheet. In addition, minimal calving of ice into the North Atlantic occurred during most of the stage 5/4 transition, indicative of ice retention within the continents. Diminished summer and autumn insolation, a warm subpolar ocean, and minimal calving of ice are conducive to rapid and extensive episodes of northern hemisphere ice-sheet growth.

It is not clear at present how the diffuse ionised gas (DIG) component in galaxies is ionised. The leading hypothesis is that ultraviolet photons from star clusters are responsible, but this requires a rather porous interstellar medium if the photons are to travel the large distances (≥ 1 kpc) between the bright clusters and diffuse-emission regions. To examine this hypothesis, we present high-resolution VLA observations of the neutral hydrogen in the Magellanic galaxy NGC 4214, and compare them with an Hα image. The data appear consistent with the idea that enough UV photons escape from supergiant H II regions to ionise the DIG.

This paper presents the current status of a Ph.D. project undertaken to search for extended-scale bursts of star formation (> 1 kpc) in irregular and collisionally produced ring galaxies, principally in the southern half of the sky. Results of recent 8.4 GHz radio continuum observations and UBVRI CCD imaging of some of the program galaxies are presented.

During 1990 we surveyed the southern sky using a multi-beam receiver at frequencies of 4850 and 843 MHz. The half-power beamwidths were 4 and 25 arcmin respectively. The finished surveys cover the declination range between +10 and −90 degrees declination, essentially complete in right ascension, an area of 7.30 steradians. Preliminary analysis of the 4850 MHz data indicates that we will achieve a five sigma flux density limit of about 30 mJy. We estimate that we will find between 80 000 and 90 000 new sources above this limit. This is a revised version of the paper presented at the Regional Meeting by the first four authors; the surveys now have been completed.

We present the first results from a study of the radio continuum properties of galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, (2dFGRS) based on thirty 2dF fields covering a total area of about 100 deg2. About 1·5% of galaxies with bJ < 19·4 mag. are detected as radio continuum sources in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). Of these, roughly 40% are star-forming galaxies and 60% are active galaxies (mostly low-power radio galaxies and a few Seyferts). The combination of 2dFGRS and NVSS will eventually yield a homogeneous set of around 4000 radio-galaxy spectra, which will be a powerful tool for studying the distribution and evolution of both AGN and starburst galaxies out to z ∼ 0·3.

I present new high-resolution observations of the HI in NGC 4214 made as part of a study of the small-scale kinematics and star formation regions of the galaxy.

We have found strong evidence for an abrupt decline in the HI rotation curve of the isolated spiral galaxy NGC 157. Various mass models to account for this, and the implications for the dark matter content of NGC 157, are discussed.

The Parkes pulsar data archive currently provides access to 144044 data files obtained from observations carried out at the Parkes observatory since the year 1991. Around 105 files are from surveys of the sky, the remainder are observations of 775 individual pulsars and their corresponding calibration signals. Survey observations are included from the Parkes 70 cm and the Swinburne Intermediate Latitude surveys. Individual pulsar observations are included from young pulsar timing projects, the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array and from the PULSE@Parkes outreach program. The data files and access methods are compatible with Virtual Observatory protocols. This paper describes the data currently stored in the archive and presents ways in which these data can be searched and downloaded.

Sporozoites of P. falciparum and other Plasmodia appear to be fairly simple antigenically, in that there is a dominant antigen, the circumsporozoite (CS) protein that forms the sporozoite surface coat (Potocnjak, Yoshida, Nussenzweig & Nussensweig, 1980; Santoro et al. 1983). Consequently, the CS protein and the gene encoding it have now been studied in considerable detail (Ellis et al. 1983; Godson et al. 1983; Ozaki et al. 1983; Dame et al. 1984; Enea et al. 1984). In contrast to sporozoites, the asexual blood stages of P. falciparum are antigenically complex. Two-dimensional gel analyses of immunoprecipitated, biosynthetically labelled antigens indicate that repeated infection with P. falciparum results in the synthesis of antibodies against a large number of distinct antigens (Perrin & Dayal, 1982; Brown et al. 1981, 1983). In further contrast to the sporozoite, the asexual blood stages of different P. falciparum isolates exhibit a high degree of antigenic heterogeneity (Brown et al. 1983; Hall et al. 1983; McBride, Walliker & Morgan, 1982). Much of this antigenic diversity is no doubt due to allelic differences but clonal populations of parasites may also have the capacity to undergo antigenic variation (Hommel, David & Oligino, 1983).

An aqueous, all nitrate, solution-based preparation of BaTiO3 is reported here. Rapid freezing of a barium and titanyl nitrate solution, followed by low temperature sublimitation of the solvent, yielded a freeze-dried nitrate precursor which was thermally processed to produce BaTiO3. XRD revealed that 10 min at temperatures ≧600 °C resulted in the formation of phase pure nanocrystalline BaTiO3. TEM revealed that the material was uniform and nanocrystalline (10–15 nm). The high surface to volume ratio inherent in these small particles stabilized the cubic phase of BaTiO3 at room temperature. It was also found that the average particle size of the BaTiO3 produced was highly dependent upon calcination temperature and only slightly dependent upon annealing time. This result suggests a means of selection of particle size of the product through judicious choice of calcination temperature. The experimental details of the freeze-dried precursor preparation, thermal processing of the precursor, product formation, and product morphology are discussed.

Time resolved optical reflectivity (TRR) and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) and ion channelling methods have been applied to determine the crystallization kinetics of Fe-doped A1203 in the temperature range of 900-1050°C. Amorphous A1203 films, approximately 250 nm thick and with Fe cation concentrations of 0, 1.85, 2.2 and 4.5%, were formed by e-beam deposition on single crystal, [0001] oriented, A1203 substrates. Annealing was performed under an oxygen ambient in a conventional tube furnace, and the optical changes which accompany crystallization were monitored, in situ, by TRR with a 633nm wavelength laser.

Crystallization is observed to proceed via solid phase epitaxy. An intermediate, epitaxial phase of -γ-Al203 is formed before the samples reach the ultimate annealing temperature. The 5% Fe-doped film transforms from γ to α-A1203 at a rate approximately 10 times that of the pure A1203 film and the 1.85% and 2.2% Fe-doped films transform at rates between these two extremes. The Fe-dopants occupy substitional lattice sites in the epilayer. Each of the four sets of specimens displays an activation energy in the range 5.0±0.2eV for the γ,α phase transition.

In February 1975, Inala High School was selected as the location for a project to develop guidance and counselling services for Aboriginal students. The source of funding was the Commonwealth Department of Aboriginal Affairs. Inala was chosen because of the relatively high concentration of Aboriginal families in what is, essentially a working class district of approximately thirty thousand people. There are also significantly high proportions of migrants from non-English speaking countries and single parent families. Staffing has grown from a part-time guidance officer and and full-time Aboriginal counsellor based at the High School, to a guidance officer, a guidance counsellor, two Aboriginal education counsellors, a Secondary teacher and a teacher aide working from a centre within the community and serving all of the primary and secondary schools.

The development of the project has been guided by the philosophy of such educationalists as McConnochie (1973) that the failure of Aboriginals to succeed at school is primarily a result of factors associated with our social institutions rather than the Aboriginal child himself. McConnochie suggests that our institutions tend to debase the black child’s concept of himself and the group with whom he identifies; and it is the child’s consequent lack of self-esteem that contributes significantly to his low vocational aspirations and academic achievement. However, low vocational aspirations and achievement themselves interact, reinforcing the child’s negative self-concept and he becomes caught up in a self-sustaining cycle of increasing school failure and worthlessness.
