Japan Focus Introduction. History often taps us on the shoulder unexpectedly. War and occupation—and, more particularly, occupied Iraq vis-a-vis occupied Japan a half-century ago— is a good example of this
In this case, the tap on the shoulder really began in 2002 as a crude, hubristic shove. In the propaganda campaign that preceded the invasion of Iraq in March 2003, officials in the Bush administration frequently evoked the example of Japan after World War Two, where the U.S.-led occupation proceeded smoothly and ended happily in a democratic and prosperous nation staunchly loyal to the United States. President Bush, Secretary of State Colin Powell, NSC director Condoleezza Rice, and many others repeatedly evoked this reassuring analogy before the invasion, and before chaos consumed Iraq. Astonishingly, the president has continued to do so up to the present day—using the fifth anniversary of V-J Day in 2006 to resurrect all the by-now tattered and torn analogies to World War Two and its aftermath, and using the Washington visit of Prime Minister Abe Shinzo in April 2007 to murmur the same incantation.
The use of neutron diffraction to determine some of the structural properties of montmorillonite-water systems at low water concentrations is described. The samples were prepared by compression or suction to give clay samples with between one and three molecular layers of water between the plates.
About 10% of the platelets in the clay are randomly oriented. The remainder are partially oriented in the plane of the sample, with an angular spread of 40° about the mean orientation. It is suggested that these oriented domains are formed from the larger platelets present in the system. The Bragg diffraction pattern is better explained by a disordered lattice model rather than by a mixture model with small particles having a well-defined lattice spacing. We have fitted both the intensities of (00l) reflections and the shape of the (001) reflection quantitatively to a model which allows for a Gaussian spread of platelet spacing about a mean value. The half width of the spread is about 10% of the lattice spacing.
No significant structural differences are found between Li, Na, K, and Cs montmorillonites. The method of preparation has no effect on the structural properties of the large platelet particles but does affect the randomly oriented fraction. The lattice spacing of the latter appears to be better defined for samples prepared by compression.
Experiments on the variation of lattice spacing with humidity indicate that the structural model we have used is adequate except at humidities where the system is changing over from one to two, or two to three water layers.
Gravitational waves from coalescing neutron stars encode information about nuclear matter at extreme densities, inaccessible by laboratory experiments. The late inspiral is influenced by the presence of tides, which depend on the neutron star equation of state. Neutron star mergers are expected to often produce rapidly rotating remnant neutron stars that emit gravitational waves. These will provide clues to the extremely hot post-merger environment. This signature of nuclear matter in gravitational waves contains most information in the 2–4 kHz frequency band, which is outside of the most sensitive band of current detectors. We present the design concept and science case for a Neutron Star Extreme Matter Observatory (NEMO): a gravitational-wave interferometer optimised to study nuclear physics with merging neutron stars. The concept uses high-circulating laser power, quantum squeezing, and a detector topology specifically designed to achieve the high-frequency sensitivity necessary to probe nuclear matter using gravitational waves. Above 1 kHz, the proposed strain sensitivity is comparable to full third-generation detectors at a fraction of the cost. Such sensitivity changes expected event rates for detection of post-merger remnants from approximately one per few decades with two A+ detectors to a few per year and potentially allow for the first gravitational-wave observations of supernovae, isolated neutron stars, and other exotica.
A novel inpatient vocational counseling service (named “In-Voc”) was developed and evaluated in three Australian spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation hospitals, aiming to improve vocational outcomes after SCI. The program provided a trained Vocational Counseling Coordinator who worked alongside the allied health team, medical, and nursing staff at each hospital. The Coordinators were interviewed to examine the role expectations and role behaviors associated with the introduction of their novel, vocationally focused, occupational role. The Coordinators’ descriptions of their role behavior were very similar to those defined by rehabilitation counselors in North America. They reported the novel role to be a productive and satisfying one. Encouragingly, the In-Voc program was associated with significantly higher post-injury employment outcomes.
In electric fields, anisodiametric mineral particles in suspension orientate and align. When tagged with fluorescent molecules, the alignment is accompanied by changes in the intensities of the polarized components of the emitted fluorescence. By measuring these changes under specific experimental conditions, any non-random directional coincidence of the absorption and emission transition moments associated with the dye molecules can be evaluated and the spatial array of the dyes estimated. From such measurements, the binding of the optical brightening agent FBA1, a triazinylaminostilbene compound, to sepiolite has been studied.
Our recent discovery of hazardous concentrations of arsenic in shallow sedimentary aquifers in Cambodia raises the spectre of future deleterious health impacts on a population that, particularly in non-urban areas, extensively use untreated groundwater as a source of drinking water and, in some instances, as irrigation water. We present here small-scale hazard maps for arsenic in shallow Cambodian groundwaters based on >1000 groundwater samples analysed in the Manchester Analytical Geochemistry Unit and elsewhere. Key indicators for hazardous concentrations of arsenic in Cambodian groundwaters include: (1) well depths greater than 16 m; (2) Holocene host sediments; and (3) proximity to major modern channels of the Mekong (and its distributary the Bassac). However, high-arsenic well waters are also commonly found in wells not exhibiting these key characteristics, notably in some shallower Holocene wells, and in wells drilled into older Quaternary and Neogene sediments.
It is emphasized that the maps and tables presented are most useful for identifying current regional trends in groundwater arsenic hazard and that their use for predicting arsenic concentrations in individual wells, for example for the purposes of well switching, is not recommended, particularly because of the lack of sufficient data (especially at depths >80 m) and because, as in Bangladesh and West Bengal, there is considerable heterogeneity of groundwater arsenic concentrations on a scale of metres to hundreds of metres. We have insufficient data at this time to determine unequivocally whether or not arsenic concentrations are increasing in shallow Cambodian groundwaters as a result of groundwater-abstraction activities.
We present a tapped tunable delay line filter for radiofrequency (RF) photonic filtering applications, capable of rapid tunability over a wide RF bandwidth limited only by the optical components’ losses, while maintaining independence from polarization state. Multiple fiber taps with contrasting dispersion slopes are used in intensity-modulated direct detection microwave photonic links. A temporal delay is generated between the signals within each arm of the link. Once a signal is received using balanced differential detection, nulls are generated as a function of the laser's operating wavelength. Tuning of the laser allows for a rapid shifting of the nulls in the RF spectrum to dynamically mitigate co-site interference. Through this method we demonstrate the potential for rapid tunability over the RF spectrum by the variation of the operating wavelength of the optical carrier.
Professor John Stanley of McGill University recently asked the National Research Council for assistance in specifying the colors of flour beetles (Tribolium). These insem are small (3 or 4 mm. long), rounded, dark, and shiny, and therefore present a somewhat unusual colorimetric problem. It is felt that the solution of this problem may be of some general interest.
The small size of the specimens seemed to preclude physical methods of colorimetry. It was felt that the most likely visual method would be direct comparison with Munsell papers or other standard colored surfaces. The difficulty with this was the very different appearance of the smooth, flat paper and the shiny. rounded beetle.
Non-supermarket food retailers can be a promising channel for increasing the availability of healthy foods in underserved communities. The present paper reports on retailer practices, attitudes and beliefs about the supply of healthy foods before and after the introduction of new subsidies for healthy foods by the US Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) in October 2009.
Design
We designed and conducted in-person standardized interviews with store owners and managers to assess perceptions of demand and profits for different foods, supply networks, barriers to stocking healthy foods and their changes following implementation of the new WIC packages.
Setting
Non-supermarket retailers in five towns of Connecticut, USA (n 68 in 2009 and n 58 in 2010).
Subjects
Owners and managers of WIC-authorized and non-WIC convenience stores and non-chain grocery stores.
Results
Retailers identified customer demand as the primary factor in stocking decisions. They reported observing a significantly weaker demand for healthy foods compared with unhealthy foods, although it improved for certain foods with the new WIC subsidies. Less healthy foods were also perceived as more profitable. Supplier networks varied by product from convenient manufacturer delivery for salty snacks to self-supply for produce. WIC retailers were able to quickly adapt and supply healthy foods required under the new WIC programme guidelines.
Conclusions
Retailers other than supermarkets currently perceive little demand for healthy foods, but new WIC subsidies have the power to change these perceptions. Supply barriers seem secondary in the limited offerings of healthy foods by stores and could be overcome when policy changes generate new demand for healthy foods.
Genetic epidemiology data suggest that younger age of onset is associated with family history (FH) of depression. The present study tested whether the presence of FH for depression or anxiety in first-degree relatives determines younger age of onset for depression.
Method
A sample of 1022 cases with recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD) was recruited at the Max Planck Institute and at two affiliated hospitals. Patients were assessed using the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry and questionnaires including demographics, medical history, questions on the use of alcohol and tobacco, personality traits and life events. Survival analysis and the Cox proportional hazard model were used to determine whether FH of depression signals earlier age of onset of depression.
Results
Patients who reported positive FH had a significantly earlier age of onset than patients who did not report FH of depression (log-rank=48, df=1, p<0.0001). The magnitude of association of FH varies by age of onset, with the largest estimate for MDD onset before age 20 years (hazard ratio=2.2, p=0.0009), whereas FH is not associated with MDD for onset after age 50 years (hazard ratio=0.89, p=0.5). The presence of feelings of guilt, anxiety symptoms and functional impairment due to depressive symptoms appear to characterize individuals with positive FH of depression.
Conclusions
FH of depression contributes to the onset of depression at a younger age and may affect the clinical features of the illness.
The objective was to characterize the antibody isotype responses to vaccination with a commercial Staphylococcus aureus bacterin in dairy heifers. Twenty-five Holstein-Friesian dairy heifers were assigned at random to one of two groups, vaccinates (n=14) or controls (n=11). Vaccinates received two 5-ml doses of Lysigin 28 d apart in late gestation. Both groups were challenged with a heterologous serotype 5 strain of Staph. aureus by aseptic intramammary infusion on days 6, 7 and 8 of lactation. Samples for serum antibody isotype (IgG, IgG1, IgG2 and IgM) determinations were taken before each vaccination, immediately prior to challenge (6 d post-calving) and at the end of the study (28 d post-calving). Samples for milk antibody isotype determinations were taken immediately prior to challenge and at the end of the study. Antibody isotype sample-to-positive ratios (S[ratio ]P ratio=(mean test sample OD−mean within-plate negative control OD)/(mean within-plate positive control OD−mean within-plate negative control OD)) were determined in milk and serum using a series of ELISAs coated with different strains of Staph. aureus belonging to capsular polysaccharide (CP) serotype 5 or 8 or surface polysaccharide (SP) serotype 336. Vaccinates had higher mean serum IgG1 and IgG2 S[ratio ]P ratios than controls against all three strains of Staph. aureus (P[les ]0·023). Vaccinates had higher mean milk IgG S[ratio ]P ratios than controls against CP8 and SP336 strains of Staph. aureus (P[les ]0·030). Hence, a humoural immune response to the vaccine was detected in serum and milk, but responses varied according to strain and antibody isotype tested.
Giardiasis surveillance data as well as drinking water, socioeconomic and land-use data were used in spatial regression models to investigate determinants of the geographic distribution of endemic giardiasis in southern Ontario. Higher giardiasis rates were observed in areas using surface water [rate ratio (RR) 2·36, 95% CI 1·38–4·05] and in rural areas (RR 1·79, 95% CI 1·32–2·37). Lower rates were observed in areas using filtered water (RR 0·55, 95% CI 0·42–0·94) and in those with high median income (RR 0·62, 95% CI 0·42–0·92). Chlorination of drinking water, cattle density and intensity of manure application on farmland were not significant determinants. The study shows that waterborne transmission plays an important role in giardiasis distribution in southern Ontario and that well-collected routine surveillance data could be useful for investigation of disease determinants and identification of high-risk communities. This information is useful in guiding decisions on control strategies.
Improved management of mental illness and substance misuse comorbidity is a National Health Service priority, but little is known about its prevalence and current management.
Aims
To measure the prevalence of comorbidity among patients of community mental health teams (CMHTs) and substance misuse services, and to assess the potential for joint management.
Method
Cross-sectional prevalence survey in four urban UK centres.
Results
Of CMHT patients, 44% (95% CI 38.1-49.9) reported past-year problem drug use and/or harmful alcohol use; 75% (95% CI 68.2-80.2) of drug service and 85% of alcohol service patients (95% CI 74.2-931) had a past-year psychiatric disorder. Most comorbidity patients appear ineligible for cross-referral between services. Large proportions are not identified by services and receive no specialist intervention.
Conclusions
Comorbidity is highly prevalent in CMHT, drug and alcohol treatment populations, but may be difficult to manage by cross-referral psychiatric and substance misuse services as currently configured and resourced.
The hypothesis tested was that dairy herds which import cattle for replacement or expansion have a higher prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus mastitis and a greater number of new Staphylococcus aureus strains enter their herds than closed herds. Fifteen commercial dairy herds were divided into four groups based on cattle importation practices. Composite foremilk samples were collected at 4-monthly intervals for 1 year from all lactating cattle. Additionally, foremilk samples were collected from cattle at parturition and skin swabs were taken from the udder of primiparous heifers. All samples were cultured for Staphylococcus aureus and isolates were strain-typed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Herds that purchased replacement heifers had a higher prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus mastitis than herds that purchased lactating cattle for expansion (P = 0.02). Herds that purchased replacement heifers had more total strains of Staphylococcus aureus (P = 0.01) and more new strains (P = 0.04) enter the herd than closed herds.
In this paper we illustrate the application of electron beam techniques to the measurement of strain, defect and alloy concentrations in nitride thin films. We present brief comparative studies of CL spectra of AlGaN and InGaN epilayers and EBSD patterns obtained from two silicon-doped 3 μm thick GaN epilayers grown on an on-axis (0001) sapphire substrate and a sapphire substrate misoriented by 10° toward the m-plane (10 0).
Physiological response stereotypy is a well-established
psychophysiological construct. Unfortunately, specifying
parameters of tasks that evoke differing physiological
responses has proved difficult. We have recorded cardiovascular
activity while subjects carried out executive and attentional
tasks that differed not only psychologically but also in
their sensitivity to brain pathology and to pharmacological
manipulations. Finapres recordings were made of 30 healthy,
normal subjects (mean age 24 years) performing two tasks
involving differing aspects of sustained attention and
two tasks involving differing aspects of spatial working
memory and planning. Measures of heart rate and blood pressure,
heart rate and blood pressure variability, and their spectral
derivatives revealed differing patterns of cardiovascular
adjustment between the “attentional” and “planning”
tasks. Each test raised blood pressure, but changes in
blood pressure and heart rate variability were confined
to the attentional tasks. These findings suggest distinct
brain mechanisms subserving different forms of arousal.
