Objectives: Indoor air pollution exposure is harmful to people’s physical and mental health, especially in the elderly population, and represents a major issue for human health. Natural ventilation can improve indoor air quality and remove indoor contamination, thus reducing the adverse effects of indoor air pollution exposure on physical and mental health. Depressive symptoms are the most common mental health issue among elderly individuals. However, evidence linking the frequency of indoor natural ventilation to depressive symptoms in the elderly population is limited.

Methods: This study included 7887 individuals 65 years and older from 2017 to 2018 in the China Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). The frequency of indoor natural ventilation was measured as the self-reported frequency of window opening per week in each season. Depressive symptoms were measured by the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Short Depression Scale (CES-D). Using a model adjusted for demographic, socio- economic, health status, and environmental factors, the correlation between indoor ventilation frequency and depressive symptoms was verified through logistic regression.

Results: Among the 7887 elderly people included in this study, 1952 (24.7%) had symptoms of depression. In the fully adjusted model, compared with the lower indoor overall ventilation frequency group (indoor ventilation frequency: 0–3 times/week), the higher indoor overall ventilation frequency group (indoor ventilation frequency: 6–8 times/week) showed a decrease in depressive symptoms by 33 % [OR: 0.67, 95 % (CI): 0.51–0.88]. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis yielded similar results.

Conclusions: High frequency of indoor ventilation is significantly associated with the reduction of depressive symptoms in Chinese individuals 65 years old or older. This result provides strong evidence for health intervention and policy formulation. Encouraging an increase in indoor ventilation frequency will be an economically beneficial measure to promote healthy aging of the Chinese population.

We investigate the production of intense ү-rays following the interaction of ultraintense laser pulse with a hybrid combination of under-dense plasma associated with a thin foil of fully ionized Al or Cu or Au at the rear side. Relativistic electrons are accelerated following the interaction of high intensity laser pulses with an under-dense plasma. These electrons are then stopped by the thin foils attached to the rear side of the under-dense plasma. This results in the production of intense-ray bursts. So, the enhancement of photon generation is due to the under-dense plasma electrons interacting with different over-dense plasma. Using open-source PIC code EPOCH, we study the effect of different electron densities in the under-plasma on photon emission. Photon emission enhancement is observed by increasing the target Z in the hybrid structure. Hybrid structure can enhance photon emission; it can increase the photon energy and yield and improve photon beam divergence. Simulations were also performed to find the optimal under-dense plasma density for ү-ray production.

In order to minimize the initial energy storage of tens of MA-class Z-pinch accelerators, an intelligent optimization method was developed based on the transmission line code circuit model and PSOGSA algorithm. Using several input parameters, the four overall parameters of the Z-pinch accelerator could be fast determined, including the connection and parallel combination of LTD cavities, the outer radius of the stack-MITL system, and electrical length of monolithic radial transmission lines. The optimization method has been verified by comparing the results with the Z-300 and Z-800 conceptual designs. By means of this intelligent optimization, some factors that affect the initial energy storage on high-current Z-pinch accelerators have been investigated, such as the operating electrical fields, the diameter of the stack-MITL system, and the inner diameter of the LTD cavity. The suggestions for designing relatively low-cost, efficient LTD-based accelerators have been proposed.

Mud shale is characterized by low strength and strong swelling, with rheological effects and deformation caused by drilling fluid and formation water. Establishing a rheological model to characterize the deformation characteristics is key to solving the problem of wellbore stability. The influence of moisture content on rock strength and creep mechanical properties were studied by means of water absorption, uniaxial compression, and creep tests. The tests showed that with the increase in moisture content, the elastic modulus and strength of hard brittle mud shale decreased. Further, under the same load, the instantaneous strain increased with increasing moisture content. Meanwhile, under various loading stresses, rock creep exhibited non-linear characteristics, which can be divided into three different creep stages: attenuated creep, stable creep, and accelerated creep. Starting with a non-linear viscous dashpot, and then introducing aging degradation and water-bearing weakening effects, based on the water-bearing creep characteristics of hard brittle shale as well as the modeling ideas of the classic component combination model, a new improved creep model based on the Nishihara model was established to describe the characteristics of the accelerated creep stage of hard brittle mud shale with various moisture contents. Subsequently, the Levenberg–Marquardt non-linear, least-squares method was adopted to invert the creep parameters. The results showed that the simulated creep curves achieved by employing the new creep model were consistent with the experimental results, thereby confirming the ability of the new non-linear creep model to provide a theoretical reference for the study of wellbore stability of hard brittle mud shale.

A transmission line circuit model was conducted to compare the performances of the two-level 2.5 Ω magnetically insulated transmission lines (MITLs) system of a 5-MA linear-transformer-driver (LTD) accelerator for two kinds of typical loads, including bremsstrahlung electron beam diodes and Z-pinch loads. Both the electron current loss in the pulse front during the magnetic insulation setup process and the electron flow distribution in the magnetic insulation steady state were analyzed. When the accelerator drives an electron beam diode load with impedance of 1.20 Ω (a single level), the duration of the magnetic insulation setup is about 12 ns, the current loss is about 130 kA in a single MITL level, the maximum electron flow current is about 50 kA in the end of MITL, and its amplitude decreases gradually after the steady magnetic insulation is established. When the accelerator drives a Z-pinch load with length of 1.5 cm, radius of 1.2 cm, and mass of 0.3 mg/cm, the duration of the magnetic insulation setup is almost zero, the maximum electron flow current in the end of MITL can reach about 55 kA (a single level), and the waveform of the electron flow resembles a saddle shape, which reaches the peak at the pinch stagnation time.

The rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a destructive pest that causes damage to rice crops worldwide. The olfactory system is critical for host or mate location by weevils, but only limited information about the molecular mechanism of olfaction-related behaviour has been reported in this insect. In this study, we conducted SMRT-seq transcriptome analysis and obtained 54,378 transcripts, 38,706 of which were annotated. Based on these annotations, we identified 40 candidate chemosensory genes, including 31 odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), six chemosensory proteins (CSPs) and three sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs). Phylogenetic analysis showed that LoryOBPs, LoryCSPs and LorySNMPs were distributed in various clades. The results of tissue expression patterns indicated that LoryOBPs were highly abundant in the antennae, whereas LoryCSPs were highly abundant not only in the antennae but also in the abdomen, head and wings. Our findings substantially expand the gene database of L. oryzophilus and may serve as a basis for identifying novel targets to disrupt key olfactory genes, potentially providing an eco-friendly strategy to control this pest in the future.

Bacterial dysentery (BD) brings a major disease burden to developing countries. Exploring the influence of temperature and its interaction with other meteorological factors on BD is significant for the prevention and early warning of BD in the context of climate change. Daily BD cases and meteorological data from 2008 to 2018 were collected in all nine prefecture-level cities in Jilin Province. A one-stage province-level model and a two-stage city-specific multivariate meta-pooled level distributed lag non-linear model were established to explore the correlation between temperature and BD, then the weather-stratified generalised additive model was used to test the interaction. During the study period, a total of 26 971 cases of BD were developed. The one-stage and two-stage cumulative dose-response ‘J’ curves overlapped, and results showed a positive correlation between temperature and BD with a 1–6 days lag effect. Age group ⩾5 years was found to be more sensitive to the effects. Moreover, there was a significant interaction between temperature, humidity and precipitation (P = 0.004, 0.002, respectively) on BD under high temperature (>0 °C), reminding residents and policymakers to pay attention to the prevention of BD in situations with both high temperature and humidity, high temperature and precipitation during the temperate monsoon climate.

The oxidation behavior of nonstoichiometric Ti2AlC x (x = 0.69) powders synthesized by combustion synthesis was investigated in flowing air by means of simultaneous thermal gravimetric analysis-differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive spectroscopy, with an effect of powder size. The oxidation of the fine Ti2AlC powders with the size of about 1 μm starts at 300 °C and completes at 980 °C, while with increasing the powder size around 10 μm the corresponding temperature increases to 400 and 1040 °C, respectively. The oxidation of nonstoichiometric Ti2AlC x (x = 0.69) powders is controlled by surface reaction in 400–600 °C, and mainly diffusion in 600–900 °C, with the corresponding oxidation activation energy of 2.35 eV and 0.12 eV, respectively. In other words, the critical temperature of changing oxidation controlling step is around 600 °C. The oxidation products were mainly rutile-TiO2 and α-Al2O3. The tiny white flocculent particles of α-Al2O3 appeared on the surface of fine Ti2AlC powders and increased with increasing the oxidation temperature.

Using phytolith analysis from a well-dated and high-resolution sediment sequence in the apex of northern Yangtze Delta, we investigate environmental changes, the rise and decline of rice exploitation and possible impacts of environment on rice exploitation during the early mid-Holocene. The phytolith sequence documents a relatively warm and dry interval during ca.9000 to 8200 cal yr BP, followed by climatic amelioration before 7200 cal yr BP. Phytolith evidence indicates that rice exploitation at the apex of northern Yangtze Delta began at 8200 cal yr BP, flourished by 7700 cal yr BP and ceased after 7400 cal yr BP. The first emergence of marine diatom species approximately 7300 cal yr BP likely indicates an accelerated sea-level rise. The apparent correlation of the initiation of rice exploitation with climatic amelioration during the early mid-Holocene suggests that climatic changes may have played an important role in facilitating rice exploitation. Both the ideal climatic conditions and stable sea level enabled flourishing rice exploitation during 8200 to 7400 cal yr BP. Although the climate remained warm and wet after 7400 cal yr BP, local sea-level rise possibly led to the termination of earlier rice exploitation at this site of the northern Yangtze Delta.

The electromagnetic simulation of the monolithic radial transmission lines for future Z-pinch was performed. Focusing on the difference in the maximum transmitted power efficiency between the electromagnetic simulation and the circuit simulation, the monolithic radial transmission lines with different impedance profile (exponential, Gaussian, hyperbolic) were compared. The power efficiency for the exponential line is higher than that for the Gaussian lines and the hyperbolic line, which is similar to that from the circuit simulation. However, all the power efficiencies obtained with the electromagnetic simulation are about 15% lower than those obtained with the circuit simulation, indicating the existence of considerable non-TEM modes and a non-ignorable error in the circuit simulation based on the quasi-TEM mode approximation. In consideration of several monolithic radial transmission lines being stacked together and the flat electrodes required by the stacked lines, the hyperbolic line was compared with the exponential line with several wide radial slots cut on the flat electrodes. While the hyperbolic line has a little bit lower transmitted power efficiency than that of the exponential line, it is much easier in fabrication. For this reason, the hyperbolic line was recommended as the best choice.

In order to use two paralleled X-pinches as X-ray sources for the time-resolved backlighting of wire-array Z-pinch plasma, it is necessary to make these two X-pinches emit X-rays at different but roughly preset time instants. The timing of the X-ray burst from an X-pinch independence of the current, and the wire mass of the X-pinch was investigated. The currents flowing through two paralleled X-pinches were measured and it was found that the total current is almost equally divided between these two X-pinches no matter how different the wires for these two X-pinches are. The reason for the equal current division between two paralleled X-pinches was given based on the inductance calculation of the X-pinch circuit.

The thermal conductivity of the mesoporous composites Cu/MCM-41 was studied to provide some useful data for promising applications. Both of the lattice and electronic thermal conductivities of Cu nanowires with different size were predicted. With the shell of the matrix MCM-41 and the air confined in the mesochannels considered, the effective thermal conductivity (EffTC) of composites Cu/MCM-41 was obtained. The EffTC shows a great anisotropy. The EffTC along the Z direction (axial of the mesochannel) is much lower than that along directions perpendicular to the axial. It is unnecessary to further raise the filling ratio of Cu nanowires for improving the EffTC along the directions perpendicular to the axial, since the filling ratio 20% is high enough. As long as there is a void space in the mesochannel, the EffTC along the Z direction will be as low as the thermal conductivity of the matrix MCM-41, due to the large thermal resistance of the void space in mesochannels.

The characteristic of the over-volted breakdown and the gaseous recovery in short nitrogen gaps was experimentally studied. It was found that the breakdown voltage of the gap changes from shot to shot even with the same experimental conditions and obeys Gaussian distribution. The over-volted factor is reduced with an increasing pressure. With a 2.7-mm gap the over-volted factors are 4.53 for 0.1 MPa pressure and 1.74 for 0.4 MPa. The over-volted breakdown voltage depends individually on the gap spacing d and the gas pressure p, rather than on the product of pd. An empirical formula of the breakdown voltage as a function of p and d was derived. The time-dependent recovery of the breakdown voltage, RVb, was obtained using a two-pulse technique. The second breakdown voltage also obeys Gaussian distribution, but it is normally with a smaller standard deviation especially when the interpulse spacing of Δt is relatively short. As a whole, RVb rises with the increase of Δt. However, an intermediate plateau is always observed and it starts when the second breakdown voltage is a little bit higher than the static breakdown voltage of the gap. The first rising edge of the RVb curve corresponds to the recovery of the electro-neutrality and the density. The intermediate plateau and the following rising edge take the spark gap much longer time to recover. The processes governing these two latter phases are as yet not fully clear. It is attributed to the delayed recombination of the residual nitrogen atoms on the cathode to produce the initial electrons for the second breakdown. An increase in pressure has resulted in an upward shift of the intermediate plateau and a shortening in the recovery time of the gaps. The second spark generally does not follow the path of the first spark.

In order to restrain the prepulse of a high energy fluence diode, a flash-over switch made of a nylon cylinder was inserted in between the cathode stalk and the cathode. Secondary prepulse technique was developed to lower the flash-over voltage of the switch. It was found that the surface resistivity of the nylon insulator changes considerably after each shot and this resistivity on the order of 107 Ω/m is most suitable for a 20-mm long flash-over switch to operate stably at a lower flash-over voltage.

An electron-beam accelerator based on spiral water pulse forming line which consists of a primary storage capacitor system, an air core spiral strip transformer, a spiral pulse forming line of water dielectric, and a field-emission diode, is described. The experimental results showed that the diode voltage is more than 500 kV, the electron beam current of diode is about 24 kA, and the pulse duration is about 200 ns. The main parameters of the accelerator were calculated theoretically. The distributions for electrical field in the pulse forming line were obtained by the simulations. In addition, the process of the accelerator charging a spiral pulse forming line was simulated through the Pspice software to get the waveforms of charging voltage of pulse forming line, the diode voltage and diode current of accelerator. The theoretical and simulated results agree with the experimental results. This accelerator is very compact and works stably and reliably.

A ∼500 kV/400 kA/100 ns pulsed power generator (PPG-I) for x-pinch experiments was designed and constructed at Tsinghua University. It is composed of a Marx generator, a combined pulse forming line (PFL), a gas-filled V/N field distortion switch, a transfer line, and a copper-sulphate resistive load for testing. The PPG-I implements a novel design in lines that four pieces of waterline with impedance 5Ω in parallel constitute a combined PFL with 1.25Ω, and incorporate each other by a common self-break V/N switch on a matched 1.25Ω transfer line. At the peak charging voltage of the PFL, the V/N switch breaks down in multi-channel discharge mode, and electric energy is fed into the testing load through the 1.25Ω transfer line. This article presents the design and test of the PPG-I generator.
