Background: Healthcare-associated central line associated bloodstream infection (HA-CLABSI) surveillance is important for monitoring healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and evaluating effectiveness of infection prevention (IP) measures. However, implementing it is a laborious and time-consuming approach. Exclusive focus on central lines neglects HAI risk due to peripheral vascular catheters. This study aimed to assess whether HA-CLABSI incidence could be inferred from HA-bloodstream infection (BSI) trends and explore shift to HA-BSI surveillance. Methods: The study was performed in a Singaporean tertiary care hospital. Electronic medical records review was performed to determine whether positive blood cultures met Centers for Disease Control/National Health Safety Network (CDC/NHSN) definitions for HA-CLABSI and HA-BSI. Incident episodes of HA-BSI were included (excluding positive cultures repeated within 14 days). Incident organisms were explored to identify common causative pathogens (excluding same organisms isolated from cultures repeated within 14 days). CLABSI and BSI occurring ≥72hrs after admission were considered healthcare-associated. Patients under oncology or hematology service were considered immunocompromised. Incidence rates (IR) per 10,000 patient-days, patient characteristics and causative pathogens were compared between both indicators. Results: From January 2022 to October 2023, mean IR for HA-CLABSI was 0.63 (n=68) and for HA-BSI was 10.06 (n=1094). Median age of patients with HA-CLABSI was 66 years and HA-BSI was 68 years. HA-CLABSI and HA-BSI were more common in males (60.86% & 58.68%). Median duration between admission to HA-CLABSI was 20 days and to HA-BSI was 12 days. Median duration between central line insertion to HA-CLABSI was 16 days. Of 1094, 631 (57.7%) patients had vascular catheter(s) (i.e., IV cannula, port-a-cath, peripherally-inserted central catheter or central line) inserted at time of HA-BSI diagnosis, of whom 46 (7.3%) patients had CLABSI ±2days from positive blood culture. There was no significant correlation between monthly aggregate data from these indicators (Spearman’s correlation coefficient= 0.36, p-value=0.1). Predominant organisms causing HA-CLABSI and HA-BSI were gram negative bacteria (GNB, 40% & 57.21%), gram positive bacteria (24.71% & 22.23%), and fungi. Common GNB in CLABSI patients were Pseudomonas spp. and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (8.24%), followed by Serratia marcescens and Klebsiella pneumoniae (5.88%). The frequent GNB in HA-BSI patients were Escherichia coli (15.4%), Klebsiella pneumonia (12.68%), and Pseudomonas spp. (6.69%). Common multi-drug resistant organisms were vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (10.59% & 3.69%) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (10.59% & 3.07%). Conclusion: HA-BSI did not correlate with HA-CLABSI. HA-BSI reflects heterogenous population outcomes. For utilization as surveillance indicator, further assessment on exclusion criteria is required to improve specificity.

This paper is devoted to the structural stability of a transonic shock passing through a flat nozzle for two-dimensional steady compressible flows with an external force. We first establish the existence and uniqueness of one-dimensional transonic shock solutions to the steady Euler system with an external force by prescribing suitable pressure at the exit of the nozzle when the upstream flow is a uniform supersonic flow. It is shown that the external force helps to stabilize the transonic shock in flat nozzles and the shock position is uniquely determined. Then we are concerned with the structural stability of these transonic shock solutions when the exit pressure is suitably perturbed. One of the new ingredients in our analysis is to use the deformation-curl decomposition to the steady Euler system developed by Weng and Xin [Sci. Sinica Math., 49 (2019), pp. 307–320] to deal with the transonic shock problem.

Ticks are a group of blood-sucking ectoparasites that play an important role in human health and livestock production development as vectors of zoonotic diseases. The phylogenetic tree of single genes cannot accurately reflect the true kinship between species. Based on the complete mitochondrial genome analysis one can help to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships among species. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of Dermacentor steini (isolate Longyan) was sequenced and compared with the mitochondrial genes of 3 other Chinese isolates (Nanchang, Jinhua and Yingtan). In Dermacentor steini 4 isolates had identical or similar mitochondrial genome lengths and an overall variation of 0.76% between sequences. All nucleotide compositions showed a distinct AT preference. The most common initiation and stop codons were ATG and TAA, respectively. Fewer base mismatches were found in the tRNA gene of D. steini (isolate Longyan), and the vicinity of the control region and tRNA gene was a hot rearrangement region of the genus Dermacentor. Maximum likelihood trees and Bayesian trees indicate that D. steini is most closely related to Dermacentor auratus. The results enrich the mitochondrial genomic data of species in the genus Dermacentor and provide novel insights for further studies on the phylogeographic classification and molecular evolution of ticks.

We study the impact of formal and informal institutions perceived and experienced by firms on their innovation using the 2012 World Bank Enterprise Survey data in China. We propose a framework to identify different innovator types of firms. Our analysis shows that (1) perceived constraints from the governmental system make firms more likely to be innovators than non-innovators; (2) perceived constraints from the legal system make firms more likely to be imitators than innovators; (3) lack of formal finance makes firms more likely to be non-innovators than innovators; (4) prevalence of bribery makes firms more likely to be non-innovators than innovators but less likely to be innovation pretenders than innovators. Our study enriches institutional theory and innovation research by establishing a framework that encompasses multiple dimensions of formal and informal institutions perceived and experienced by firms and the impacts of such perception and experience on firms’ propensity to become certain type of innovator.

In this paper, CuCr–Zr alloys prepared by vacuum melting with adding La and Ni elementswere heat-treated and aged, followed by plastic deformation using low-energy cyclic impact tests, to simultaneously improve their mechanical and electrical properties. Results showed that the grain size of the casted Cu–Cr–Zr alloys was significantly reduced after the solid-solution aging and plastic deformation process. There were a lot of dispersed Cr and Cu5Zr precipitates formed in the alloys, and the numbers of dislocations were significantly increased. Accordingly, the hardness was increased from 78 to 232 HV, and the tensile strength was increased from 225 to 691 MPa. Electrical conductivity has not been significantly affected after these processes. The enhancement of overall performance is mainly attributed to the combined effects of solid-solution hardening, fine grain hardening, and precipitation/dislocation strengthening.

The objective of this study is to propose a methodology for assessing waterway traffic capacity in the Shanghai estuary of the Yangtze River. To achieve this objective, we first put forward the estimation method which utilises the minimum collision distance taking the dynamic ship domain into consideration. Considering possible effects caused by unknown external factors, the waterway traffic capacity is then represented by a probability distribution. Finally, we quantify the equivalent units of ships with various ship sizes as well as the effects of large-sized ships on the waterway traffic capacity. Results show that a large-sized ship is equivalent to more small-sized ships during the daytime period than at night. In addition, the deployment of large-sized ships could increase the waterway traffic capacity and such an increment highly depends on the increased proportion of large-sized ships in the waterway traffic.

This study develops an ordered probit model to evaluate the factors influencing two-ship collision severity using ten years’ ship collision accident data from Fujian sea areas. The model results show that the involvement of big ships has the largest impact in increasing the probability of a serious or very serious accident, followed by the involvement of fishing vessels. There will be a bigger probability of a serious accident if both ships involved in the collision are cargo ships. We found that the season of spring, poor visibility and night time periods are more likely to be factors in high severity levels of ship collision. The results also reveal that lookout failure plays a decisive role in increasing serious accident risk compared with other types of human errors. The results of this study may be beneficial for policy-makers in proposing efficient strategies to reduce the likelihood of serious ship collisions.

In rock engineering, evaluating the post-peak strength and deformation of rock is necessary. To explore the elasto-plastic behavior of sandstone in the post-peak stage, a series of strain-controlled triaxial tests were conducted under different confining pressures. According to the post-peak characteristics, a constitutive model based on nonlinear elasticity and generalized plasticity is proposed. This proposed model is characterized by the following features: (1) Nonlinear elasticity is observed under hydrostatic and shear loading; (2) the associated flow rule is followed; (3) substantial plastic deformation occurs during shear loading; and (4) post-peak softening behavior is accurately predicted. This model requires twelve material parameters, three for elasticity and nine for plasticity. The proposed model was validated by comparing the triaxial test results of Mushan sandstone at different hydrostatic pressures under dry and saturated conditions. In addition, the model is versatile; it can simulate the deformational behavior of two other sandstones. In summary, the proposed model can reasonably predict the complete stress–strain curve of sandstone.

In this paper, an ultra-wideband (UWB) filter with a notch band using T-shaped step impedance resonator loaded with cross-shaped open stubs has been presented. The notch band is formed by utilizing intrinsic zero. The characteristics of the new quad-mode resonator have been analyzed using odd-even mode analysis method. It can be shown that it is the intrinsic zero that generates the notch band. In addition, wide tunable notch band form 5–9.3 GHz can be achieved. A UWB filter with a notch band centered at 6.25 GHz using the proposed quad-mode resonator has been designed, fabricated, and tested. Experiment results show that the attenuation in notch frequency is >22 dB while the return loss of the simulation and measurement results are 22 dB/20 dB and 14.5 dB/11.2 dB in the lower and upper passband, respectively, which illustrate that the simulation and measurement results are in agreement.

Fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) with a size in the range of 10 – 100 nm have been produced by ion irradiation and annealing, and isolated by differential centrifugation. Single particle spectroscopic characterization with confocal fluorescence microscopy and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy indicates that they are photostable and useful as an alternative to far-red fluorescent proteins for bioimaging applications. We demonstrate the application by performing in vivo imaging of bare and bioconjugated FND particles (100 nm in diameter) in C. elegans and zebrafishes and exploring the interactions between this novel nanomaterial and the model organisms. Our results indicate that FNDs can be delivered to the embryos of both organisms by microinjection and eventually into the hatched larvae in the next generation. No deleterious effects have been observed for the carbon-based nanoparticles in vivo. The high fluorescence brightness, excellent photostability, and nontoxic nature of the nanomaterial have allowed long-term imaging and tracking of embryogenesis in the organisms.

The time-temperature-transformation (TTT) curve for the δ → α′ isothermal martensitic transformation in a Pu-1.9 at. % Ga alloy exhibits an anomalous double-C curve. Recent work suggests that an ambient temperature conditioning treatment enables the lower-C curve. However, the mechanisms responsible for the double-C are still not fully understood. When the δ → α′ transformation is induced by pressure, an intermediate γ′ phase is observed in some alloys. It has been suggested that transformation at upper-C temperatures may proceed via this intermediate phase, while lower-C transformation progresses directly from δ to α′. To investigate the possibility of thermally induced transformation via the intermediate γ′ phase, in situ x-ray diffraction at the Advanced Photon Source was performed. Using transmission x-ray diffraction, the δ → α′ transformation was observed as a function of time and temperature in samples as thin as 30 μm. The intermediate γ′ phase was not observed at -120°C (upper-C curve) or -155 °C (lower-C curve). Results indicate that the bulk of the α′ phase forms relatively rapidly at -120 and -155 °C.

In this paper, the material and electrical characteristics of Nickel-Silicon-Carbon (NiSi:C) films were investigated for the first time to ascertain the compatibility of NiSi:C contacts to silicon-carbon (Si:C) source/drain stressors. The incorporation of 1 atomic percent of carbon was found to increase both the Ni2Si-to-NiSi and NiSi-to-NiSi2 transformation temperatures. Our results show that the incorporation of carbon stabilizes the interfacial and surface morphology of NiSi:C films. We speculate that the incorporated carbon segregates into the NiSi:C grain boundaries and suppresses film agglomeration and NiSi-to-NiSi2 phase transformation. X-ray diffraction analysis further revealed that the formed NiSi:C films possessed a preferred orientation. Current-voltage measurements for NiSi and NiSi:C n+/p junctions exhibit similar cumulative distribution for junction leakage indicating that carbon incorporation does not have a detrimental impact on the n+/p junction integrity. Our results suggest that NiSi:C is a suitable self-aligned contact metal silicide to n-channel MOSFETs with SiC S/D stressors in a similar manner to the way in which NiSiGe is used for p-channel MOSFETs with SiGe S/D stressors.

In order to allow people to explore potential fire environments without risk of danger, a new fire scout mobile robot used in urban environments is introduced in this paper. It adapts itself to stair climbing by using articulated-chain-wheeled mobile style with differential wheels. The positive pressure with continuous flow of protected gas inside the body endows the robot with explosion protection capability. When the wireless control signal is interrupted, it could automatically return to safe place along previous path based on sensorial data. Since position estimation only using encoders reading has serious limitations as mobile robot movement proceeds, a novel method integrating data of encoders and ultrasonic sensors is built, which uses iterative closest point algorithm to do data matching so as to adjust position and orientation of the mobile robot. This path retracing method realizes high accuracy and fast speed of automatic returning when the mobile robot is working in static urban environment even if the environment is unknown.
