In 2018, an Ionplus 200 kV MIni-CArbon DAting System (MICADAS) accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) was installed at the Laboratory of AMS Dating and the Environment, Nanjing University (NJU-AMS Laboratory), China. The NJU-AMS Laboratory is largely devoted to research on radiocarbon dating and 14C analysis in fields of earth, environmental and archaeological sciences. The laboratory has successfully employed various pretreatment methods, including routine pretreatment of tree rings, buried wood and subfossil wood, seeds, charcoal, pollen concentrates, organic matter, and shells. In this study, operational status of the NJU-AMS is presented, and results of radiocarbon measurements made on different sample types are reported. Measurements on international standards, references of known age, and blank samples demonstrate that the NJU-AMS runs stably and has good reproducibility on measurement of single samples. The facility is capable of measuring 14C in samples with the precision and accuracy that meet the requirements for investigating annual 14C changes, history-prehistory age dating, and Late Quaternary stratigraphic chronology research.

Theoretical results of frequentist model averaging mainly focus on asymptotic optimality and asymptotic distribution of the model averaging estimator. However, even for basic least squares model averaging, many theoretical problems have not been well addressed yet. This article discusses asymptotic properties of a class of least squares model averaging methods with nested candidate models that includes the Mallows model averaging (MMA) of Hansen (2007, Econometrica 75, 1175–1189) as a special case. Two scenarios are considered: (i) all candidate models are under-fitted; and (ii) the true model is included in the candidate models. We find that in the first scenario, the least squares model averaging method asymptotically assigns weight one to the largest candidate model and the resulting model averaging estimator is asymptotically normal. In the second scenario with a slightly special weight space, if the penalty factor in the weight selection criterion is diverging with certain order, the model averaging estimator is asymptotically optimal by putting weight one to the true model. However, MMA with fixed model dimensions is not asymptotically optimal since it puts nonnegligible weights to over-fitted models. The theoretical results are clearly summarized with their restrictions, and some critical implications are discussed. Monte Carlo simulations confirm our theoretical results.

We present a long-term seasonal tree ring cellulose oxygen isotope (δ18Oc) time series created by analyzing four segments (S1, S2, S3, and S4) per year during the period of 1951–2009 from southeastern Tibetan Plateau. This intraseasonal δ18Oc reveals the onset and mature phase of the summer monsoon precipitation in this region. Analysis indicates that the δ18Oc of S1 has the strongest correlation with precipitation during the regional monsoon onset (29–33 pentads, May 21–June 10, r = −0.69), and the δ18Oc values for S2, S3, and S4 correlate strongly with June, July, and August precipitation, respectively. Combined δ18Oc of S2, S3, and S4 shows the most robust correlation (r = −0.82) with the mature-phase monsoon precipitation (June-July-August, JJA), passing rigorous statistical tests for calibration and verification in dendroclimatology. These results demonstrate the feasibility in using long-term intraseasonal δ18Oc to reconstruct the Asian summer monsoon's intraseasonal variations.

Western Kunlun Mountain (WKM) glaciers show balanced or even slightly positive mass budgets in the early 21st century, and this is anomalous in a global context of glacier reduction. However, it is unknown whether the stability prevails at longer time scales because mass budgets have been unavailable before 2000. Here topographical maps, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission and Landsat data are used to examine the area and surface elevation changes of glaciers on the WKM since the 1970s. Heterogeneous glacier behaviors are observed not only in the changes of length and area, but also in the spatial distribution of surface elevation changes. However, on average, glacier area and elevation changes are not significant. Glaciers reduce in the area by 0.07 ± 0.1% a−1 from the 1970s to 2016. Averaged glacier mass loss is −0.06 ± 0.13 m w.e. a−1 from the 1970s to 1999. These findings show that the WKM glacier anomaly extends back at least to the 1970s.

An ice core was extracted from the Zangser Kangri (ZK) ice field in the northern Tibetan Plateau (NTP), a location with limited instrumental and proxy records. In this paper, we present a continuous high–resolution dust concentration time series spanning the period AD 1951-2008 to investigate variations in atmospheric dust loading over the NTP. The results show that atmospheric dust loading exhibited significant decadal variations, with two periods of high dust loading (AD 1959–67 and AD 1979–89) and three periods of relatively low loading (AD 1951-58, AD 1968–78 and AD 1990–2008). The variability of atmospheric dust loading was related to wind speed at 500 hPa over the dust source regions. The winter Arctic Oscillation (AO) index showed a significant negative correlation with the annual dust concentration, implying a possible connection between the winter AO and the atmospheric dust loading over the NTP.

Poly-Si layers are used for various applications in integrated-circuit manufacturing technology. In most cases, the microstructure of the layers can have a significant impact on performance of the structures. In the present study, poly-Si layers implanted with 1E14 and 1E16 oxygen cm-2 were characterized using transmission electron-microscopy (TEM). Layers implanted with 1E16 cm-2 oxygen had exhibited lower variations in sheet-resistance for a given variation in post-implant anneal temperature. The microstructural behavior of the films was therefore of interest. TEM characterization showed differences in the microstructure of poly-Si implanted with 1E14 and 1E16 oxygen cm-2. Layers implanted with 1E14 doses showed a columnar grain-structure similar to as-deposited poly-Si layers. Grain-sizes were quite uniform and relatively small. Layers implanted with 1E16 doses showed a strongly defected grain-structure quite different from as-deposited poly-Si layers. The columnar structure had been largely destroyed. Grain-sizes were less uniform, with primarily large grains but also small grains being present. There are indications that the 1E16 samples had been amorphized by the implant and recrystallized by the anneal, but it is not clear from these samples whether this is the cause for the variation in resistance-behavior (between IE 14 and IE 16 samples). TEM micrographs are indicative of the presence of oxygen-bubbles in both sets of implanted specimens. The bubbles arise due to the oxygen implant. There is no noticeable correlation between poly-Si grain-boundaries and the bubbles.
