Time-varying coefficient modeling (TVCM), which represents regression coefficients as smooth functions of continuous time, provides a flexible framework for uncovering complex patterns of change in levels and associations in intensive longitudinal data. However, conventional TVCM remains limited to investigating directional effects across individuals. By introducing a TVCM formulation of the multivariate normal distribution, the present study extends TVCM to explore change in undirected associations (couplings) and variability, thereby broadening its utility for psychological research. We discuss three versions of this approach: an aggregate-level model and two hierarchical versions capturing interindividual differences in unfolding change, either via person-specific intercepts accounting for onset differences or through fully person-specific coefficient functions smoothed via partial pooling. To illustrate the proposed developments, we apply them to six weeks of intensive longitudinal data from 16 anxiety patients undergoing therapy and examine unfolding changes in the level and volatility of nervousness and threat monitoring, their coupling, as well as between-person heterogeneity in each of these. We further show how inspecting first-order derivatives of the coefficient functions supports identifying periods of stability and change. Finally, we discuss extensions incorporating person-level characteristics to explain heterogeneity in patterns of change and predict outcomes.
Boreal forests play a critical role in the global carbon cycle as they are one of the largest terrestrial carbon sinks globally. In this study, we employ explainable machine learning (ML) techniques to investigate the influence of environmental and vegetation variables on net ecosystem exchange (NEE), focusing specifically on the effects of diffuse radiation. We utilize a sub-hourly resolution data set including satellite and in-situ observations from three boreal or hemiboreal forest research stations across the latitudes 58–68° N to capture latitudinal variability in forest carbon uptake. Using SHAP (Shapley Additive Explanations) values, we identify key drivers influencing NEE and quantify their importance across various ML model architectures. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), diffuse radiation, normalized difference vegetation index, and soil temperature were identified as the variables having the largest explanatory power for NEE across the ML models. ML models using only these variables result in $ {R}^2\approx 0.8 $ and RMSE$ \approx 2.3 $$ \mu \mathrm{mol}\;{\mathrm{m}}^{-2}\hskip0.1em {\mathrm{s}}^{-1} $. Further analysis of SHAP values indicates that higher diffuse radiation (DiffPAR) is associated with more negative NEE (stronger carbon sink). SHAP analysis highlights this effect much more clearly than raw DiffPAR measurements, because it accounts for interactions with other environmental factors. This suggests that the diffuse radiation effect emerges from interactions between DiffPAR and co-varying environmental factors (such as cloudiness and total PAR). Cases identified by SHAP ($ \mathrm{DiffPAR}\ \mathrm{SHAP}<-2 $) have a median NEE $ 1.55\mu \mathrm{mol},{\mathrm{m}}^{-2},{\mathrm{s}}^{-1} $ more negative than cases with raw $ \mathrm{DiffPAR}\ge 400 $. When applied to ML models, SHAP uncovers nonlinear, context-dependent interactions between diffuse radiation and other drivers of NEE without assuming a priori relationships.
Regional One Health antimicrobial stewardship networks require coordinated, adaptive strategies across sectors. This conceptual article combines strategic fit theory with the Ansoff matrix to identify key determinants of sustainable network performance and proposes strategic development pathways to strengthen governance, data integration, cross-sectoral collaboration and long-term network development.
Nitrous oxide is being investigated as a treatment for therapy-resistant depression, yet its environmental implications as a potent greenhouse gas are largely unaddressed. A single 1 h treatment generates ∼150 kg CO2-equivalents, rising to ∼7.8 t per patient-year, highlighting the need to incorporate environmental externalities into evaluation.
This paper reports iterative industrial prototyping of data collection systems for simulating seafood factories. We identify the data necessary to achieve the level of realism factory designers need for effective design exploration, and propose methods to obtain them. Sixteen physical prototypes showed how prototyping shape dynamic requirements in the design process. Findings indicate that models need 3D shape and texture, which can be obtained from smartphone photogrammetry, and bending stiffness and multidirectional friction from cantilever and inclined plane tests.
This study examines how product development activities influence the environmental sustainability of complex mechatronic systems using a 2D-flatbed laser cutting system as a case study. Three levels are identified, the machine, operation and part level, at which design changes can affect environmental sustainability during machine operation. Utilizing operational machine data, nine design changes are derived indicating that ∼36% of the environmental impact in the use phase can be reduced through technical design solutions, enabling EcoDesign principles supported by data-driven approaches.
The Emergency Paramedic Act (EPA; Notfallsanitätergesetz), implemented in 2014, expanded the legal authority of German paramedics to independently perform defined invasive and pharmacological interventions under specific conditions. However, real-world implementation of these competencies within the physician-based German Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system remains insufficiently described.
Objective:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency, type, temporal development, and regional variation of invasive and pharmacological/therapeutic interventions performed independently by paramedics over a six-year period.
Methods:
A retrospective, descriptive multicenter analysis of digital EMS documentation was conducted across three districts in Saxony, Germany, from January 1, 2019 through December 31, 2024. All missions were screened (n = 197,842). Paramedic-led missions without physician presence were included; physician-attended missions and non-emergency interfacility transports were excluded. Interventions were classified according to the 2024 Federal Association of Medical Directors of EMS competency catalogue. Frequencies were analyzed by year and district. Temporal trends were assessed using the Mann–Kendall test, and regional differences were explored using one-way ANOVA with Tukey HSD post hoc testing. All inferential analyses were exploratory.
Results:
Of 197,842 missions, 156,417 (79.1%) were paramedic-led without physician presence. Invasive procedures occurred in 7.6% of missions and were predominantly peripheral intravenous (IV) access (5.7%). Advanced airway management and intraosseous (IO) access were rare (<0.1%). Pharmacological/therapeutic administrations occurred in 11.3% of missions and increased from 9.4% in 2019 to 12.1% in 2024 (Mann–Kendall test), whereas overall invasive procedure rates remained stable.
Conclusion:
Ten years after implementation of the EPA, invasive and pharmacological interventions performed independently by German paramedics remain relatively infrequent and largely confined to basic measures. Advanced procedures are rarely applied, reflecting continued structural characteristics of the physician-based EMS model.
Natural phonetic variability such as talker differences facilitates second language (L2) word learning. Whether accent variability enhances the talker variability benefit, particularly in the learning of words that differ only in lexical tones, has not yet been examined despite its potential applied value for L2 tone language learning. Two groups of monolingual English speakers completed six training sessions on four minimal-tone quadrads of Mandarin monosyllabic pseudowords, produced either by 12 talkers from Beijing (single accent) or by four talkers each from Beijing, Yantai, and Guangzhou (multiple accents). Bayesian mixed-effects modeling revealed strong learning improvement across sessions in both conditions, but the multiple-accent group improved faster than the single-accent group. In addition, the multiple-accent group demonstrated superior generalization to new talkers with a familiar and an unfamiliar accent, suggesting that natural L2-Mandarin accent variability facilitates English learners’ access to abstract tone-word lexical representations, beyond the benefits of talker variability alone.
We study the existence and the distribution of “long” chains in the Weihrauch degrees, mostly focusing on chains with uncountable cofinality. We characterize when such chains have an upper bound and prove that there are no cofinal chains (of any order type) in the Weihrauch degrees. Furthermore, we show that the existence of coinitial sequences of non-zero degrees is equivalent to $\mathrm {CH}$. Finally, we explore the extendibility of antichains, providing some necessary conditions for maximality.
This chapter shows how elites in the time of Louis the Pious discussed landed property belonging to churches, and how old Roman law was used in the process to secure that property's status. In this debate, the recourse to sixth-century Roman law enabled certain actors to assign the ruler a distinctive position standing over the community of the ecclesia. The idea that ecclesiastical property should be treated as inalienable would have an enormous impact on both legal theory and practice. For it shaped the types of transaction that could be used when dealing with church property in a characteristic manner, so that donation, precaria oblata, infeudation and exchange dominate our ecclesiastical charter evidence from the early Middle Ages onwards. As is well known, it was from the twelfth century onwards that the idea of church property as inalienable would form the starting point for a new conception of sovereignty.
In an overview of David Cronenberg's career, the author has deliberately chosen Videodrome and eXistenZ as crucial turning points for several reasons. Both films share a host of thematic interests that extend beyond the scope of authorial consistency most critics are willing grant all of Cronenberg's films, even those not based on an original script by Cronenberg himself. David Thomson singles out Videodrome when he argues for the emergence of a self-reflexive turn in Cronenberg's films. Having appeared in brief cameos in directors' films, Cronenberg established a public persona in 1999 when he served a term as president of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival. It was a form of public recognition unthinkable for the man who had been dubbed the 'King of venereal horror' and 'Baron of blood' in the early years of his career.
Digital interventions for promoting relaxation are increasingly popular, yet few combine multiple sensory modalities. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a fully digital relaxation program combining hypnotherapy with aromatherapy and explored whether the scent can induce a conditioned relaxation effect.
Methods
In this four-arm randomized controlled trial (N = 504), participants were assigned to one of four groups for a 4-week intervention: (a) combined (hypnotherapy + aromatherapy), (b) hypnotherapy-only, (c) aromatherapy-only, or (d) control (minimal intervention pause). Sessions were self-guided and delivered online every 2 days. The primary outcome was subjective calmness, assessed via the calmness–restlessness subscale of the Multidimensional Mood Questionnaire. Secondary outcomes included perceived stress (PSS-10) and well-being (WHO-5). A fifth week with aromatherapy-only exposure was conducted in the combined and aromatherapy-only groups to test for conditioning.
Results
At post-intervention, both hypnotherapy-involved groups reported significant greater calmness than controls. The combined group showed a mean difference of β = 2.08 (95% CI: 0.50–3.65, p = 0.010, d = 0.38), while the hypnotherapy-only group showed β = 1.80 (95% CI: 0.24–3.37, p = 0.024, d = 0.33). Both effects were consistent across intention-to-treat and per-protocol analyses. Within-group improvements in calmness were also observed across all groups. No significant differences emerged from the conditioning test in week 5.
Conclusions
Digital hypnotherapy improved relaxation, with modest added benefit from aromatherapy. The results support the use of multisensory digital tools to enhance subjective calmness. However, no evidence for conditioned effects of the scent was observed under the current conditions.
Compared to the number of films devoted to nuclear war, the catastrophic nuclear accident never acquired its own cinematic genre. Disaster films about civilian nuclear accidents would seem perfectly poised to serve that function to nuclear power as a technology emblematic of recent neoliberal politics. This chapter examines three films in order to explore this hypothesis about the confluence of gothic representations and neoliberal politics within the realm of nuclear power. The films discussed include Gregor Schnitzler's Die Wolke, Andreas Prochaska's Der erste Tag, and Volker Sattel's Unter Kontrolle that that deal with nuclear power in the European context and from a uniquely German perspective. Die Wolke and Der erste Tag project the abolition of nuclear power into an imaginary future, either as the democratically desired result of the lesson learned from history or as the inevitable outcome of economic and political strictures.
Healthy seeds are an important component of global food security, and their microbiome was recently identified as crucial for plant growth, resilience and health. Seed vigour is highly affected by storage conditions and aging. To study the impact of seed aging on the Brassica napus seed bacterial community, we conducted accelerated aging tests (45°C, humidity > 95%) with seed lots of four genotypes originating from two field sites in Germany. We found a strong effect of accelerated aging on germination, seedling phenotypes, as well as the seed bacterial community. Control seeds developed mainly into normal seedlings and were characterized by diverse bacterial communities comprising typical core seed microbes. Accelerated aging resulted in abnormal germination and reduced total germination. Furthermore, accelerated aging reduced diversity and evenness of the seed bacterial community and contributed to a shift from Gram-negative to Gram-positive bacteria. This effect, especially the enrichment of Firmicutes, was found irrespective of the genotype and field site; however, the way stress affected bacterial taxa varied, depended on both factors. Tumebacillus and Bacillus showed a significant negative correlation with germination phenotype, whereas alpha diversity correlated positively with a high total germination. At the functional level, the majority of isolated bacteria demonstrated plant-beneficial characteristics, showing a greater beneficial potential in the aged seeds. Our results show that accelerated aging tests affect the seed bacterial community structure and diversity, and correlate with the presence of certain taxa, which might have an effect on germination and seedling phenotype.
Steffen Mau, in his response to Ayelet Shachar's lead essay, begins by recapping the historical development of border control. Before the twentieth century, it was possible to cross many national borders in continental Europe without travel documents or controls. Comprehensive systems for suppressing “informal” and non-authorized mobility are a relatively recent invention. Moving on to Shachar's essay itself, Mau acknowledges the value of her approach, which introduces a functional definition of borders. He identifies four key developments: increased selectivity and visa policies, internationalization of border regimes, macroterritorialization, and digitization and new border technologies. While Shachar includes these in her analysis, Mau argues that they can only be partially subsumed under the concept of the shifting border, and may in fact have a different momentum. In the final part of his response, Mau addresses Shachar's suggestions for developing an institutional-legal design that can match the change in border controls, offering a number of criticisms. While agreeing with her about expanding legal obligations in the area of humanitarian migration, he notes that the discussion should be extended to cover labor migration and tourism too. He also points out the mounting problems posed by the establishment of “smart borders." His final objection relates to the question of political feasibility. As necessary and normatively convincing as Shachar’s call for corresponding legal responsibility and shifting border control might be, it seems highly improbable that this will actually come to pass.
This is an exploration of social cohesion in rural settlements in western Europe in the period 700–1050 CE, and of the extent to which settlements, or districts, constituted units of social organisation. It focuses on the interactions, interconnections and networks of people who lived side by side – neighbours. Drawing evidence from most of the current western European countries, the book plots and interrogates the very different practices of this wide range of regions in a systematically comparative framework, offering a new approach to well-known problems of the early Middle Ages by bringing together expertise from different national traditions. It examines how people in the localities of the early medieval West worked together in pursuit of shared goals beyond the level of the household, and how (and whether) they formed their own groups through that collective action. It considers the variety of local responses to the supra-local agents of landlords and rulers and the impact, such as it was, of those agents on the small-scale residential group. It also assesses the impact on local societies of the values, instructions and demands of the wider literate world of Christianity, as delivered by local priests.
This chapter outlines the main problems the book will address, surveys the national historiographies of Germany, England, France, Italy and Spain and identifies the problems highlighted therein. While national historiographies have different preoccupations, we note the widespread influence of German writing of the nineteenth century and of French regional studies in the twentieth. There are also common themes: free proprietorship and personal freedom and their impact (or not) on emerging institutions; lordship and its many varieties, with a tendency to treat the local through the structures and relationships of great estates; the importance of archaeology and its increasing provision of new data.
This chapter provides basic orientation, with essential information on the physical geography and political history of the period 750–1000, outlining the main political trends in Francia, Italy, England and Spain. Though a period of extreme political instability at the highest levels of kings and emperors, complicated by the long-term impact of invaders from outside, many of the regions within kingdoms sustained an identity over many centuries. The chapter continues with a brief survey of available primary source material for the study of local societies (which is extended in the Appendix). It surveys charters, estate records, narratives (including annals, chronicles and hagiography), capitularies, law texts and liturgy.
