The eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, a global biodiversity hotspot, is threatened by habitat degradation. Conservation actions are required in this region, but limited knowledge of large and medium-sized mammals is hampering conservation planning. Using 149 camera traps, we surveyed large and medium-sized mammals in Xionglongxi Provincial Nature Reserve and adjacent areas, on the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, during September 2016–May 2017. We obtained 5,752 independent captures of 29 large and medium-sized mammal species, including 13 that are globally threatened and 22 that are nationally threatened in China. Carnivores were especially diverse, with 16 species recorded. Of particular significance was our detection of seven felid species, including the leopard Panthera pardus and the snow leopard Panthera uncia. Our record of the Chinese mountain cat Felis bieti extends the known range of this species. We documented new upper elevation limits for eight species. There was elevational overlap between the leopard and the snow leopard, suggesting potential competition between the two species. The grey wolf Canis lupus and the leopard were the dominant predators, and the woolly hare Lepus oiostolus and several species of ungulates were the most frequently photographed prey species. The study area maintains a significant community of large and medium-sized mammals, which is more diverse than in other areas on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. We recommend the establishment of a larger nature reserve of national protection status in the region of the Xionglongxi Provincial Nature Reserve, to protect the unique subalpine and alpine ecosystems in this area.

The dependence of fishbone cycle on energetic particle intensity has been investigated in EAST low-magnetic-shear plasmas. It is observed that the fishbone mode growth rate, saturation amplitude as well as fishbone cycle frequency clearly increase with increasing neutral beam injection (NBI) power. Moreover, enhanced electron density and temperature perturbations as well as energetic particle loss were observed with greater injected NBI power. Simulation results using M3D-K code show that as the NBI power increases, the resonant frequency and the energy of the resonant particles become higher, and the saturation amplitude of the mode also changes, due to the non-perturbative energetic particle contribution. The relationship between the calculated energetic particle pressure ratio and fishbone cycle frequency is obtained as ${f_{\textrm{FC}}} = 2.2{(1000{\beta _{\textrm{ep,calc}}} - 0.1)^{5.9 \pm 0.5}}$. Results consistent with the experimental observations have been achieved based on a predator–prey model.

We report on a high-power Ho:YAG single-crystal fiber (SCF) laser inband pumped by a high-brightness Tm-fiber laser at 1908 nm. The Ho:YAG SCF grown by the micro-pulling-down technique exhibits a propagation loss of $0.05\pm 0.005~\text{cm}^{-1}$ at $2.09~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$. A continuous-wave output power of 35.2 W is achieved with a slope efficiency of 42.7%, which is to the best of our knowledge the highest power ever reported from an SCF-based laser in the 2 $\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ spectral range.

We report on the study of single-mode fiber-laser-pumped mode-locked Yb:CALYO lasers via using a passive saturable absorber and Kerr-lens mode-locking technique, respectively. Up to 3.1-W average power with 103-fs pulse duration is obtained from the passive mode-locking, and down to 36-fs pulse duration with more than 2-W average power is achieved by the pure Kerr-lens mode-locking, which is to the best of our knowledge, the highest average power from a reported sub-40-fs Yb-based solid-state oscillator.

Underground Nuclear Astrophysics in China (JUNA) will take the advantage of the ultra-low background in Jinping underground lab. High current accelerator with an ECR source and detectors were commissioned. JUNA plans to study directly a number of nuclear reactions important to hydrostatic stellar evolution at their relevant stellar energies. At the first period, JUNA aims at the direct measurements of 25Mg(p,γ)26 Al, 19F(p,α) 16 O, 13C(α, n) 16O and 12C(α,γ) 16O near the Gamow window. The current progress of JUNA will be given.

Pre-Quaternary terrestrial climate variability is less well understood than that during the Quaternary. The continuous eolian Red Clay sequence underlying the well-known Quaternary loess-paleosol sequence on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) provides an opportunity to study pre-Quaternary terrestrial climate variability in East Asia. Here, we present new mineral magnetic records for a recently found Red Clay succession from Shilou area on the eastern CLP, and demonstrate a marked East Asian climate shift across the Miocene-Pliocene boundary (MPB). Pedogenic fine-grained magnetite populations, ranging from superparamagnetic (SP)/single domain (SD) up to small pseudo-single domain (PSD) sizes (i.e., from <30 nm up to ~1000 nm), dominate the magnetic properties. Importantly, our mineral magnetic results indicate that both pedogenic formation of SP grains and transformation of SP grains to SD and small PSD grains accelerated across the MPB in the Shilou Red Clay, which are indicative of enhanced pedogenesis. We relate this enhanced pedogenesis to increased soil moisture availability on the CLP, associated with stronger Asian Summer Monsoon precipitation during an overall period of global cooling. Our study thus provides new insights into the Miocene-Pliocene climate transition in East Asia.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of a high concentration of vitamin E supplementation in sow diet during the last week of gestation and lactation on the performance, milk composition, and vital immunological variables and antioxidative parameters in sows and piglets. The experiment started on day 107 of gestation and lasted until the piglets were weaned on day 21 of lactation. 48 sows were divided into two groups and fed either a basal diet with 44 IU/kg of vitamin E or a basal diet supplemented with additional vitamin E, total content of 250 IU/kg. Sow milk and blood samples were obtained on day 0 (farrowing) and on day 21 of lactation. One 21-day-old piglet per litter was selected to collect plasma. Results showed that supplementation of the maternal diet with 250 IU/kg vitamin E improved the average daily gain (ADG) and weaning weight of piglets (P < 0·05), and the concentrations of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin A (IgA) in sow plasma, colostrum and milk. The concentrations of fat in the colostrum and milk were significantly increased by supplementation with 250 IU/kg of vitamin E (P < 0·05). The level of plasma IgG, IgA, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and catalase (CAT) were all higher (P < 0·05) in piglets from sows that were fed 250 IU/kg of vitamin E than in those from the control group. The high concentration of vitamin E supplementation to the sows enhanced the concentrations of α-tocopherol in the sow milk and plasma as well as piglet plasma (P < 0·05). In conclusion, the addition to the maternal diet of vitamin E at high concentration improved the weight of piglets at weaning, and enhanced humoral immune function and antioxidant activity in sows and piglets.

SG-III laser facility is now the largest laser driver for inertial confinement fusion research in China. The whole laser facility can deliver 180 kJ energy and 60 TW power ultraviolet laser onto target, with power balance better than 10%. We review the laser system and introduce the SG-III laser performance here.

In this work, the morphology of BiFeO3 was successfully modulated from microsphere to microcube by using a polyanion, poly (methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid) (PMVEMA), in a microwave assisted hydrothermal route. A simple ultrasonic purification method has been developed to obtain pure phase BiFeO3 from the crude products without using any chemicals. X-ray diffraction results confirmed the capability of this purification method. When increasing the amount of PMVEMA, the morphology of BiFeO3 gradually changed from microsphere to microcube as illustrated by scanning electron microscopy. A mechanism was suggested for the morphology evolution of BiFeO3. After the formation of the small BiFeO3 single crystal, PMVEMA preferentially absorbed on one side of the crystals through specific and/or noncovalent interactions, resulting in the preferential integration of these crystals to form microcubes. The magnetic properties of these microcrystals were also investigated and the magnetization of the microcubes increased with the decrease of temperature.

Ion implantation has been widely used to improve the mechanical and tribological properties of single crystalline silicon, an essential material for the semiconductor industry. In this study, the effects of four different ion implantations, Ar, C, N, and Ne ions, on the mechanical and tribological properties of single crystal Si were investigated at both the nanoscale and the microscale. Nanoindentation and microindentation were used to measure the mechanical properties and fracture toughness of ion-implanted Si. Nano and micro scratch and wear tests were performed to study the tribological behaviors of different ion-implanted Si. The relationship between the mechanical properties and tribological behavior and the damage mechanism of scratch and wear were also discussed.

The initiation and evolution of shear bands in Zr64.13Cu15.75Ni10.12Al10 bulk metallic glass tensile samples has been investigated in situ by scanning electron microscopy. The initial shear band originates from the highest stressed area, and does not propagate during further tension, which is attributed to the weakening of the stress field in front of the shear band tip, possibly caused by atomic rearrangement and local temperature rise. As a result, multiple shear bands occur in sequence with gradually increased length and offset. This result is due to the fact that the stress in front of the tip of the initial shear band does not concentrate again during further tension above the shear yield strength. Numerical analysis was carried out to investigate the stress distribution under tension, suggesting that the maximum pressure-dependent shear stress criterion overestimates the yield strength, while the shear plane criterion describes the conditions for the formation of shear bands well.

The two-dimensional (2D) Ga-nitride/air photonic quasi-crystals (PQC) were successfully fabricated by the technique of focused Ga ion beam (FIB) milling on GaN based epitaxial wafers. The effects of the PQC on the current injected edge emitting GaN-based light emitters were investigated. The quasi-crystal structures studied in this work are based on square-triangular tiling with 8-fold or 12-fold symmetry. The air hole diameter in the different PQC patterns was varied from 95nm up to 1200nm, the filling factor of air hole was in the range of 10% to 50% and the depth of the hole was 90nm to 370nm, respectively. Among these, the nearest center-to-center distance of the holes and/or the lattice constant was reached to be 170nm. The photonic quasi-crystals on the GaN-based light emitters demonstrated a two to three factor of magnitude enhancement of surface extractive emission. The blocking of the propagation of planar-guided modes by the photonic quasi-crystals was observed. By comparison of symmetry effect among the triangular lattice PC and PQCs, it was found that the GaN-based photonic quasi-crystal (PQC) with 12-fold symmetry provided a much favorable enhancement of the extractive light emission over that of triangle lattice PC and 8-fold symmetric PQC as well.

We report on typical examples of thin carbon films prepared employing energy beam techniques such as ion beam deposition, ion beam assisted deposition and Laser illumination. In an annealing study of ion beam deposited carbon films, small dots with sub-micron size are isolated through the selective oxidation of sp3-bonded amorphous carbon films, and they were confirmed to be diamond nano-particles by micro-Raman spectrometry. C60 deposition assisted with Ne ion beam results in two kinds of films: 1) The quality of C60 films is improved by the assist of 500eV Ne ion bombardment. 2) The increase of Ne ion Energy results in the decomposition of C60 and the films obtained at 700°C contain possible nano-diamond crystallites at the center of the intense beam spot. The Laser illumination decomposes C60 molecules in general, but the fine-tuning of Laser energy density makes it possible to prepare an array of high luminescent spots.
