The ubiquitous marine radiocarbon reservoir effect (MRE) constrains the construction of reliable chronologies for marine sediments and the further comparison of paleoclimate records. Different reference values were suggested from various archives. However, it remains unclear how climate and MREs interact. Here we studied two pre-bomb corals from the Hainan Island and Xisha Island in the northern South China Sea (SCS), to examine the relationship between MRE and regional climate change. We find that the MRE from east of Hainan Island is mainly modulated by the Southern Asian Summer Monsoon-induced precipitation (with 11.4% contributed to seawater), rather than wind induced upwelling. In contrast, in the relatively open seawater of Xisha Island, the MRE is dominated by the East Asian Winter Monsoon, with relatively more negative (lower) ΔR values associated with high wind speeds, implying horizontal transport of seawater. The average SCS ΔR value relative to the Marine20 curve is –161±39 14C years. Our finding highlights the essential role of monsoon in regulating the MRE in the northern SCS, in particularly the tight bond between east Asian winter monsoon and regional MRE.

Across Eurasia, horse transport transformed ancient societies. Although evidence for chariotry is well dated, the origins of horse riding are less clear. Techniques to distinguish chariotry from riding in archaeological samples rely on elements not typically recovered from many steppe contexts. Here, the authors examine horse remains of Mongolia's Deer Stone-Khirigsuur (DSK) Complex, comparing them with ancient and modern East Asian horses used for both types of transport. DSK horses demonstrate unique dentition damage that could result from steppe chariotry, but may also indicate riding with a shallow rein angle at a fast gait. A key role for chariots in Late Bronze Age Mongolia helps explain the trajectory of horse use in early East Asia.

In this paper, an all-fiberized and narrow-linewidth 5 kW power-level fiber amplifier is presented. The laser is achieved based on the master oscillator power amplification configuration, in which the phase-modulated single-frequency laser is applied as the seed laser and a bidirectional pumping configuration is applied in the power amplifier. The stimulated Brillouin scattering, stimulated Raman scattering, and transverse mode instability effects are all effectively suppressed in the experiment. Consequently, the output power is scaled up to 4.92 kW with a slope efficiency of as high as approximately 80%. The 3-dB spectral width is about 0.59 nm, and the beam quality is measured to be M2∼1.22 at maximum output power. Furthermore, we have also conducted a detailed spectral analysis on the spectral width of the signal laser, which reveals that the spectral wing broadening phenomenon could lead to the obvious decrease of the spectral purity at certain output power. Overall, this work could provide a reference for obtaining and optimizing high-power narrow-linewidth fiber lasers.

High-power orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams have distinct advantages in improving capacity and data receiving for free-space optical communication systems at long distances. Utilizing the coherent combination of a beam array technique and helical phase approximation by a piston phase array, we have proposed a generating system for a novel high-power beam carrying OAM, which could overcome the power limitations of a common vortex phase modulator and a single beam. The characteristics of this generating method and the orthogonality of the generated OAM beams with different eigenstates have been theoretically analyzed and verified. Also a high-power OAM beam produced by coherent beam combination (CBC) of a six-element hexagonal fiber amplifier array has been experimentally implemented. Results show that the CBC technique utilized to control the piston phase differences among the array beams has a high efficiency of 96.3%. On the premise of CBC, we have obtained novel vortex beams carrying OAM of $\pm 1$ by applying an additional piston phase array modulation on the corresponding beam array. The experimental results agree approximately with the theoretical analysis. This work could be beneficial to areas that need high-power OAM beams, such as ultra-long distance free-space optical communications, biomedical treatments, and powerful trapping and manipulation under deep potential wells.

High-peak-power transform-limited narrow-linewidth nanosecond all-fiber lasers are desired in a range of applications. However, their linewidths will be broadened by self-phase modulation (SPM). We propose a novel concept that generates transform-limited laser pulses by temporally shaping the pulse seed. The impact of the pulse shape on SPM-induced spectral broadening was studied numerically and experimentally. It was found theoretically that the square-shape pulsed laser is immune to SPM-induced spectral broadening. Based on this principle, we built a high-peak-power, linearly polarized, square-shape nanosecond all-fiber laser in a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) configuration. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) limited peak powers of 4.02 kW, 5.06 kW, 6.52 kW and 9.30 kW were obtained at pulse widths of 8 ns, 7 ns, 6 ns and 5 ns. Thanks to the square-shape pulsed seed, the linewidths at maximum peak power remained at 129.5 MHz, 137.6 MHz, 156.2 MHz and 200.1 MHz, respectively, close to the transform-limited values of 110.8 MHz, 126.6 MHz, 147.7 MHz and 177.3 MHz.

The timing of the Holocene summer monsoon maximum (HSMM) in northeastern China has been much debated and more quantitative precipitation records are needed to resolve the issue. In the present study, Holocene precipitation and temperature changes were quantitatively reconstructed from a pollen record from the sediments of Tianchi Crater Lake in northeastern China using a plant functional type-modern analogue technique (PFT-MAT). The reconstructed precipitation record indicates a gradual increase during the early to mid-Holocene and a HSMM at ~5500–3100 cal yr BP, while the temperature record exhibits a divergent pattern with a marked rise in the early Holocene and a decline thereafter. The trend of reconstructed precipitation is consistent with that from other pollen records in northeastern China, confirming the relatively late occurrence of the HSMM in the region. However, differences in the onset of the HSMM within northeastern China are also evident. No single factor appears to be responsible for the late occurrence of the HSMM in northeastern China, pointing to a potentially complex forcing mechanism of regional rainfall in the East Asian monsoon region. We suggest that further studies are needed to understand the spatiotemporal pattern of the HSMM in the region.

To obtain accurate navigation results with respect to Earth simultaneously with those with respect to the target for an interplanetary probe to approach the target planet, this paper proposes a Radio/Optical integrated navigation method based on ephemeris correction, which deeply affects the fusion accuracy. In this paper, the model of the ephemeris error is established, and taking the analytical solution of the ephemeris uncertainty as measurement, the target ephemeris error and its covariance are estimated by Kalman filter and fed back to modify the force models. By correcting the target ephemeris and using information fusion, the Radio/Optical integrated navigation prevents the ephemeris uncertainty polluting the fusion accuracy, and efficiently combines the radio and optical navigation results. The results show the influence of the ephemeris error can be removed, and the Radio/Optical integrated navigation is capable of providing accurate navigation results with respect to Earth and the target. The results demonstrate the proposed method yields an accuracy superior to the conventional method, which proves its effectiveness.

Gravity Assist (GA) is a kind of transfer orbit technology widely used in interplanetary missions, which highly depends on navigation performance to succeed. The Orbital Dynamic Equation is an essential component in the navigation system, affected by factors including the numerical integrator, perturbing planets, integration step size, gravitational constant and planet ephemerides. To analyse the impact factors mentioned above and investigate an efficient system model, the propagation and navigation results are carried out in a Mars-assist explorer scenario; a specific case study is also provided in this paper. The results indicate that the planetary ephemeris uncertainty and integration size are the dominant error sources, and the integration step size is the dominant impact factor on the real-time performance. In this specific case, the ‘Orbital Dynamic Equation’ considering Sun and Mars perturbation is suggested for integration by RK4 with 60 s integration step size. The conclusions drawn by this study are particularly useful in the design, construction, and analysis of an autonomous navigation system for a GA explorer.

Grinding stones have provided a convenient proxy for the arrival of agriculture in Neolithic China. Not any more. Thanks to high-precision analyses of use-wear and starch residue, the authors show that early Neolithic people were mainly using these stones to process acorns. This defines a new stage in the long transition of food production from hunter-gatherer to farmer.

The receptivity phenomenon, which is the process of environmental disturbances initially entering the boundary layers and generating disturbance waves, is one of the important but not well understood mechanisms involving laminar–turbulent transition of hypersonic flows. This paper presents a numerical simulation study of the receptivity to weak free-stream fast acoustic waves for a Mach 7.99 axisymmetric flow over a $7^\circ$ half-angle blunt cone. In hypersonic boundary-layer flow over a blunt cone, the process of receptivity to free-stream disturbances is altered considerably by the presence of a bow shock and an entropy layer. In the present study, both steady and unsteady flow solutions are obtained by computing the full Navier–Stokes equations with a fifth-order shock-fitting finite-difference scheme, which is able to account for the effects of bow-shock/free-stream-disturbance interaction accurately. The current numerical results for the steady base flow are compared with previous experimental and numerical results. In addition, a normal-mode linear stability analysis is used to identify the main components of boundary-layer disturbances generated by forcing free-stream fast acoustic waves. It is found that neither the first mode nor the second-mode instability waves are excited by free-stream fast acoustic waves in the early region along the cone surface, although the Mack modes can be unstable there. Instead, the second mode is excited downstream of the second-mode Branch I neutral stability point. The delay of the second-mode excitation is because the hypersonic boundary-layer receptivity is governed by a two-step resonant interaction process: (i) resonant interactions between the forcing waves and a stable boundary-layer wave mode I near the leading-edge region; and (ii) resonant interactions between the induced stable mode I and the unstable second Mack mode downstream. The same receptivity mechanism also explains the results that no first Mack mode components are generated by the current receptivity process because there is no resonant interaction between fast acoustic waves and the first Mack mode.

Supersonic boundary-layer receptivity to different types of free-stream disturbance is studied for a Mach 4.5 boundary-layer flow over a flat plate by using the approaches of both direct numerical simulation and linear stability theory. This paper is Part 3 of a three-part study of the receptivity of supersonic boundary layers to free-stream disturbances. The present paper investigates receptivity to four types of different free-stream disturbances, i.e. slow and fast acoustic waves, entropy waves, and vorticity waves. A high-order shock-fitting scheme is used in the numerical simulation in order to accurately account for the effects of interactions between free-stream disturbance waves and the oblique shock wave. Numerical results on the generation of fast acoustic waves by free-stream entropy waves or vorticity waves are compared with those of a linear theory. Good agreement is obtained in both wave angles and amplitudes immediately behind the bow shock. It is found that the second-mode receptivity to free-stream slow acoustic waves is several times stronger than that to free-stream fast acoustic waves. This is because free-stream slow acoustic waves can directly induce and interact with the first and second Mack modes, while free-stream fast acoustic waves cannot. Instead, the free-stream fast acoustic waves can only induce and interact with stable mode I waves, which in turn induce unstable Mack modes. In the cases of receptivity to free-stream entropy waves and vorticity waves, it is found that the oblique shock wave created by the displacement of the boundary layer plays an important role because boundary-layer disturbances are mainly induced by fast acoustic waves generated behind the shock by free-stream forcing waves. As a result, mechanisms of the receptivity to free-stream entropy and vorticity waves are very similar to those of the receptivity to free-stream fast acoustic waves.

In this paper, we continue to study the mechanisms of the receptivity of the supersonic boundary layer to free-stream disturbances by using both direct numerical simulation and linear stability theory. Specifically, the receptivity of a Mach 4.5 flow over a flat plate to free-stream fast acoustic waves is studied. The receptivity to free-stream slow acoustic waves, entropy waves and vorticity waves will be studied in the future. The oblique shock wave induced by the boundary-layer displacement plays an important role in the receptivity because the free-stream disturbance waves first pass through the shock before entering the boundary layer. A high-order shock-fitting scheme is used in the numerical simulations in order to account for the effects of interactions between free-stream disturbance waves and the oblique shock wave. The results show that the receptivity of the flat-plate boundary layer to free-stream fast acoustic waves leads to the excitation of both Mack modes and a family of stable modes, i.e. mode I, mode II, etc. It is found that the forcing fast acoustic waves do not interact directly with the unstable Mack modes. Instead, the stable mode I waves play an important role in the receptivity process because they interact with both the forcing acoustic waves and the unstable Mack-mode waves. Through the interactions, the stable mode I waves transfer wave energy from the forcing fast acoustic waves to the second Mack-mode waves. The effects of incident wave angles, forcing wave frequencies, and wall temperature perturbation conditions on the receptivity are studied. The results show that the receptivity mechanisms of the second mode are very different from those of modes I and II, which leads to very different receptivity properties of these discrete wave modes to free-stream fast acoustic waves with different incident wave angles, frequencies, and different wall boundary conditions. The maximum receptivities of the second mode, mode I and mode II to planar free-stream fast acoustic waves are obtained when incident wave angles approximately equal 26°, 45°, and 18°, respectively. The results of receptivity to a beam of free-stream fast acoustic waves show that the leading edge is one of the most efficient regions for receptivity.

This paper is the first part of a two-part study on the mechanisms of the receptivity to disturbances of a Mach 4.5 flow over a flat plate by using both direct numerical simulations (DNS) and linear stability theory (LST). The main objective of the current paper is to study the linear stability characteristics of the boundary-layer wave modes and their mutual resonant interactions. The numerical solutions of both steady base flow and unsteady flow induced by forcing disturbances are obtained by using a fifth-order shock-fitting method. Meanwhile, the LST results are used to study the supersonic boundary-layer stability characteristics relevant to the receptivity study. It is found that, in addition to the conventional first and second modes, there exist a family of stable wave modes in the supersonic boundary layer. These modes play a very important role in the receptivity process of excitation of the unstable Mack modes, especially the second mode. These stable modes are termed mode I, mode II, etc., in this paper. Though mode I and mode II waves are linearly stable, they can have resonant (synchronization) interactions with both acoustic waves and the Mack-mode waves. Therefore, the stable wave modes such as mode I and mode II are critical in transferring wave energy between the acoustic waves and the unstable second mode. The effects of frequencies and wall boundary conditions for the temperature perturbations on the boundary-layer stability and receptivity are also studied.
