Integrons are important genetic elements that allow easy acquisition and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes. Studies reporting occurrence of integrons in Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) isolated from bovine mastitis in large dairy farms across China are scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of class 1 integrons (intI1), antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and associated genes in S. aureus isolated from bovine mastitis and their associations. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined to evaluate the AMR phenotypes, whereas PCR was carried out to assess the occurrence of AMR genes and intI1. In addition, index cluster analysis was used to estimate associations between AMR phenotype, genotype and intI1 in 103 isolates. Overall, 83% of S. aureus were intI1-positive and 5 types of gene cassettes were detected. Susceptibility against single antimicrobial agents ranged from 0% (erythromycin), 12% (ampicillin) and 16% (penicillin G) to 96% (gentamicin). Most isolates (64%) were intermediate-resistant against erythromycin, whereas resistance against ceftriaxone (22%), clindamycin (4%), cefotaxime (2%), tetracycline (1%) and ciprofloxacin (1%) were relatively uncommon. The predominant resistant gene was blaZ gene (n = 88, 85%) followed by tetD gene (n = 85, 83%). With an estimated prevalence of 12% of the mecA gene, methicillin-resistant S. aureus isolates had higher MIC50 and MIC90 for majority of antimicrobials than methicillin-susceptible S. aureus isolates. Presence of the ermC gene was associated with erythromycin resistance. Ampicillin, erythromycin and penicillin G resistance were associated with intI1. The data presented in our study indicated that class 1 integron-mediated resistance possibly plays an important role in dissemination of AMR in S. aureus isolated from bovine mastitis.

Hydrophobicity, high viscosity, and dispersion are important properties for organo-montmorillonites, and all organo-montmorillonite configurations have yet to be fully characterized with respect to this property. High-viscosity montmorillonite (Mnt) is useful in gels and as an adsorber. The current study focused on modifying Mnt using organic cations and anions of various chain lengths in batch experiments with various concentrations and ratios. The viscosity of organic Mnt reached up to 395 mP.s. Molecular dynamics simulations and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to identify the conditions and arrangement of organic cations and anions in the Mnt interlayer area. The intercalation mechanism of organic cations and anions was also determined, providing a theoretical basis for the preparation of high-viscosity Mnt.

The passive film of reinforcing steel in marine concrete is damaged by the infiltration of chloride and sulfate ions. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) can adsorb anions and release interlayer ions to form passive films due to its ion exchange property. A Mg-Al-NO3 layered double hydroxide/montmorillonite (LDH/Mnt) composite inhibitor was prepared by layer-by-layer self-assembly (LBL) of LDH and Mnt. The structure and morphology of the LDH/Mnt composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser Raman spectroscopy, N2-adsorption/desorption measurements, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The LDH/Mnt composites, as inhibitors of chloride ions and sulfate ions, exhibited high slow-release efficiency. The mass ratio of LDH and Mnt affected the curing capacity of the synthesized composites, and the optimum mass ratio was LDH/Mnt = 1:1 for which slow-release efficiency reached 94.16%.

To contribute to the treatment decision and optimize coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CNS) control programs, we conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance rates of coagulase-negative staphylococcus associated with bovine mastitis in China. Three databases (PubMed, Google scholar and China National Knowledge Infrastructure database) were utilized to obtain relevant publications. A total of 18 publications were included in our research, and 3 of them included antimicrobial resistant (AMR) test. The pooled prevalence of coagulase-negative staphylococcus was 17.28%. Subgroup analysis revealed that the prevalence was higher in South China than in North China, was higher in 2011–2020 than in 2000–2010 and was higher in clinical bovine mastitis cases than in subclinical cases. The pooled AMR were most resistant to β-lactams, followed by tetracyclines, quinolones, nitrofurans, lincosamides, sulfonamides, amphenicol and aminoglycosides. The pooled AMR rate of coagulase-negative staphylococcus was lower in 2011–2020 than in 2000–2010. Although the prevalence of CNS showed an increasing trend over 20 years, the AMR rate showed a decreasing trend, and the clinical type of mastitis was the most frequent and the prevalence was highest in South China. Finally, CNS was most resistant to β-lactams amongst the eight groups of antimicrobial agents.

Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), a rodent-borne disease, is a major public health concern in both developed and developing countries. China is the most severe endemic country in the world, constituting 90% of the cases. Although the incidence of HFRS has substantively decreased in most areas of China, HFRS has rebounded remarkably in some epidemic areas. Xuancheng is one of these areas. In this study, we collected the case data reported recently in Xuancheng and designed a 1:3 case−control study. The Chi-square test, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed. In all cases, farmers made up the highest proportion of occupations. And there were 20 variables with statistical significance including indoor hygienic conditions; the surrounding environment; whether bitten by rats at work and other criteria. In addition, exposure to rodents and rats bites is a high-risk factor for HFRS. Rodent density was calculated at 20.9% (159/760), the virus carrier rate was 9.4% (15/159) and the index of rats with a virus was about 2.0%. Exposure to rodents and insect bites is also high-risk factors for HFRS among local residents in Xuancheng. More importantly, during the flood years, the increased density of rodents led to an increased risk of human exposure to rodents. As our statistical analysis proves, targeted strategies should be developed and implemented to reduce the incidence of local diseases in the future.

We established a mastitis model using exogenous infection of the mammary gland of Chinese Holstein cows with Staphylococcus aureus and extracted total RNA from S. aureus-infected and healthy mammary quarters. Differential expression of genes due to mastitis was evaluated using Affymetrix technology and results revealed a total of 1230 differentially expressed mRNAs. A subset of affected genes was verified via Q-PCR and pathway analysis. In addition, Solexa high-throughput sequencing technology was used to analyze profiles of miRNA in infected and healthy quarters. These analyses revealed a total of 52 differentially expressed miRNAs. A subset of those results was verified via Q-PCR. Bioinformatics techniques were used to predict and analyze the correlations among differentially expressed miRNA and mRNA. Results revealed a total of 329 pairs of negatively associated miRNA/mRNA, with 31 upregulated pairs of mRNA and 298 downregulated pairs of mRNA. Differential expression of miR-15a and interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase-like 2 (IRAK2), were evaluated by western blot and luciferase reporter assays. We conclude that miR-15a and miR-15a target genes (IRAK2) constitute potential miRNA–mRNA regulatory pairs for use as biomarkers to predict a mastitis response.

The research reported in this Research Communication aimed to describe the influence of Toll-like receptor 4 gene polymorphisms on milk production traits in Chinese Holstein cows. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is an important member of the toll-like receptor gene family that is widely found in various organisms. Since TLR4 can identify molecular patterns from various pathogenic microorganisms and induce natural and acquired immunity, it plays an important role in disease resistance in dairy cows. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of TLR4 (c.−226 G > C and c.2021 C > T) that were previously found to be associated with health traits were genotyped using Sequenom MassARRAY (Sequenom Inc., San Diego, CA) for Chinese Holstein cows (n = 866). The associations between SNPs or their haplotypes and milk production traits and somatic cell count were analyzed by the generalized linear model procedure of Statistics Analysis System software (SAS). The c.−226 G > C and c.2021 C > T showed low linkage disequilibrium (r2 = 0·192). There was no association between these two SNPs and SCC, but significant effects were found for SNP c.−226 G > C on test-day milk yield, fat content, protein content, and total solid and milk urea nitrogen (P < 0·05), and SNP c.2021 C > T and the SNP haplotypes on test-day milk yield, fat content, protein content, lactose content and total solids (P < 0·05). The software MatInspector revealed that c.−226 G > C was located within several potential transcription factor binding sites, including transcription factor AP-2. The polymorphisms c.−226 G > C and c.2021 C > T had significant effects on the milk production for Chinese Holstein, and these SNP could be used for molecular marker-assisted selection of milk production.

Boron carbide (B4C) is an attractive material for numerous applications including vehicle armor, cutting tools, blasting nozzles, and abrasive powder, owing to its extreme hardness, high melting point, high Young’s modulus, and excellent thermoelectric properties. However, the application of B4C is limited by the high-temperature synthesis process. The present work aims to explore a low-temperature manufacturing process for synthesizing B4C with a small amount of free carbon. Poly(resorcinol borate) with an aromatic structure and high char yield was chosen as the aromatic polymeric precursor. A combination of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy was performed to investigate the influences of the reaction temperature and holding time on the changes in the precursor microstructure. The results indicate that the rod-like structure of crystalline B4C is successfully synthesized at 600 °C, and the free carbon can be reduced to about 0.8 wt% in the final product. This is because the pyrolysis temperature controlled the carbon content of the B4C, which led to an enlarged contact domain between B2O3 and carbon, and a relatively low-temperature synthesis of B4C.

Nanoporous carbon membranes (NCMs) were fabricated by the blends of resorcinol–formaldehyde (RF) resin and Pluronic F-127 through the processes of assembly, membrane-casting, solidification, and pyrolysis. The effect of the catalyst type (i.e., NaOH and Na2CO3) on the structure and property of precursors and their derived NCMs was investigated. The as-obtained precursors and NCMs were characterized by thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, elemental analysis, nitrogen adsorption, and gas permeation techniques. The results have shown that defect-free NCMs can be easily procured by the NaOH and Na2CO3 catalysts. In contrast, the precursor made from the Na2CO3 catalyst exhibits higher char yield than that from NaOH after pyrolysis. NaOH-based NCMs are beneficial for the separation of H2/N2 and CO2/N2 gas pairs. Na2CO3-based NCMs are more favorable for the separation of O2/N2 with an ideal selectivity of 6.29 and an O2 permeability of 3.27 Barrer.

Fast high precision relative Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning is very important to various applications and ambiguity resolution is a key requirement. It has been a continuing challenge to determine and fix GNSS carrier-phase ambiguity, especially for medium- and long-distance baselines. In past research, with dual-frequency band Global Positioning System (GPS), it is almost impossible for fast ambiguity resolution of medium- and long-distance baselines mainly due to the ionospheric and tropospheric effects. With the launch of the BeiDou system, triple-frequency band GNSS observations are available for the first time. This research aims to test the ambiguity resolution performance with BeiDou triple-frequency band observations. In this research, two mathematical models are compared: zenith tropospheric delay as an unknown parameter versus corrected tropospheric delay. The ambiguity resolution performance is investigated in detail with BeiDou observations. Different distance baselines are tested: 45 km, 70 km and 100 km and the performances are investigated with different elevation cut-off angles. Also the performance with BeiDou alone and combined BeiDou and GPS are compared. Experimental results clearly show that with practical observations of triple-frequency bands, ambiguity of medium- or long-distance baselines can be fixed. The results also show that: the performance of ambiguity resolution with an elevation cutoff angle of 20° is much better than that of 15°; The performance with tropospheric effect corrected is slightly better than that with tropospheric effect as an estimated parameter; Dual-frequency band GPS observations will benefit ambiguity resolution of integrated BeiDou and GPS.

In this paper, we studied the optimization of preparation for polymeric optical waveguide based bus structures with embedded 45 degree micro-mirrors by metallic hard mold method. The 45º facets on the metallic hard mold, which were used to create the 45 degree micro-mirrors, were studied by the atomic force microscopy (AFM). The surface roughness of the 45 degree facets was reduced from 70nm to be 2nm by a photopolymer coating step. High speed test on the waveguide shows the low loss and high Q-factor performance of the waveguide structures. A backplane bus with 10 Gbits/sec channel will be reported.
