Dietary restriction-influenced biological performance is found in many animal species. Pardosa pseudoannulata is a dominant spider species in agricultural fields and is important for controlling pests. In this study, three groups – a control group (CK group), a re-feeding group (RF group), and a dietary restriction group (RT group) – were used to explore development, mating, reproduction, and the expression levels of Vg (vitellogenin) and VgR (vitellogenin receptor) genes in the spider. The findings indicated that when subjected to dietary restriction, the carapace size, weight of the spiderlings, and weight of the adults exhibited a decrease. Furthermore, the preoviposition period and egg stage were observed to be prolonged, while the number of spiderlings decreased. It was also observed that re-feeding reduced cannibalism rates and extended the preoviposition period. Dietary restriction also affected the expression of the Vg-3 gene in the spider. These results will contribute to the understanding of the impact of dietary restriction in predators of pest control, as well as provide a theoretical foundation for the artificial rearing and utilisation of the dominant spider in the field.

Very metal-poor (VMP, [Fe/H]<-2.0) stars serve as invaluable repositories of insights into the nature and evolution of the first-generation stars formed in the early galaxy. The upcoming China Space Station Telescope (CSST) will provide us with a large amount of spectral data that may contain plenty of VMP stars, and thus it is crucial to determine the stellar atmospheric parameters ($T_{\textrm{eff}}$, $\log$ g, and [Fe/H]) for low-resolution spectra similar to the CSST spectra ($R\sim 200$). This study introduces a novel two-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, comprised of three convolutional layers and two fully connected layers. The model’s proficiency is assessed in estimating stellar parameters, particularly metallicity, from low-resolution spectra ($R \sim 200$), with a specific focus on enhancing the search for VMP stars within the CSST spectral data. We mainly use 10 008 spectra of VMP stars from LAMOST DR3, and 16 638 spectra of non-VMP stars ([Fe/H]>-2.0) from LAMOST DR8 for the experiments and apply random forest and support vector machine methods to make comparisons. The resolution of all spectra is reduced to $R\sim200$ to match the resolution of the CSST, followed by pre-processing and transformation into two-dimensional spectra for input into the CNN model. The validation and practicality of this model are also tested on the MARCS synthetic spectra. The results show that using the CNN model constructed in this paper, we obtain Mean Absolute Error (MAE) values of 99.40 K for $T_{\textrm{eff}}$, 0.22 dex for $\log$ g, 0.14 dex for [Fe/H], and 0.26 dex for [C/Fe] on the test set. Besides, the CNN model can efficiently identify VMP stars with a precision rate of 94.77%, a recall rate of 93.73%, and an accuracy of 95.70%. This paper powerfully demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed CNN model in estimating stellar parameters for low-resolution spectra ($R\sim200$) and recognizing VMP stars that are of interest for stellar population and galactic evolution work.

In this work, we present a high-power, high-repetition-rate, all-fiber femtosecond laser system operating at 1.5 $\unicode{x3bc}$m. This all-fiber laser system can deliver femtosecond pulses at a fundamental repetition rate of 10.6 GHz with an average output power of 106.4 W – the highest average power reported so far from an all-fiber femtosecond laser at 1.5 $\unicode{x3bc}$m, to the best of our knowledge. By utilizing the soliton-effect-based pulse compression effect with optimized pre-chirping dispersion, the amplified pulses are compressed to 239 fs in an all-fiber configuration. Empowered by such a high-power ultrafast fiber laser system, we further explore the nonlinear interaction among transverse modes LP01, LP11 and LP21 that are expected to potentially exist in fiber laser systems using large-mode-area fibers. The intermodal modulational instability is theoretically investigated and subsequently identified in our experiments. Such a high-power all-fiber ultrafast laser without bulky free-space optics is anticipated to be a promising laser source for applications that specifically require compact and robust operation.

We demonstrated a 202 W Tm:YLF slab laser using a reflecting volume Bragg grating (VBG) as an output coupler at room temperature. Two kinds of active heat dissipation methods were used for the VBG to suppress the shift of wavelength caused by its increasing temperature. The maximum continuous wave (CW) output power of 202 W using the microchannel cooling was obtained under the total incident pump power of 553 W, the corresponding slope efficiency and optical-to-optical conversion efficiency were 39.7% and 36.5%, respectively. The central wavelength was 1908.5 nm with the linewidth (full width at half maximum) of 0.57 nm. Meanwhile, with the laser output increasing from 30 to 202 W, the total shift was about 1.0 nm, and the wavelength was limited to two water absorption lines near 1908 nm. The beam quality factors M2 were measured to be 2.3 and 4.0 in x and y directions at 202 W.

Shifts in the maternal gut microbiota have been implicated in the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Understanding the interaction between gut microbiota and host glucose metabolism will provide a new target of prediction and treatment. In this nested case-control study, we aimed to investigate the causal effects of gut microbiota from GDM patients on the glucose metabolism of germ-free (GF) mice. Stool and peripheral blood samples, as well as clinical information, were collected from 45 GDM patients and 45 healthy controls (matched by age and prepregnancy body mass index (BMI)) in the first and second trimester. Gut microbiota profiles were explored by next-generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, and inflammatory factors in peripheral blood were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Fecal samples from GDM and non-GDM donors were transferred to GF mice. The gut microbiota of women with GDM showed reduced richness, specifically decreased Bacteroides and Akkermansia, as well as increased Faecalibacterium. The relative abundance of Akkermansia was negatively associated with blood glucose levels, and the relative abundance of Faecalibacterium was positively related to inflammatory factor concentrations. The transfer of fecal microbiota from GDM and non-GDM donors to GF mice resulted in different gut microbiota colonization patterns, and hyperglycemia was induced in mice that received GDM donor microbiota. These results suggested that the shifting pattern of gut microbiota in GDM patients contributed to disease pathogenesis.

The present work highlights the progress in the field of flexible thermoelectric generator (f-TEGs) fabricated by 3-D printing strategy on the typing paper substrate. In this study, printable thermoelectric paste was developed. The dimension of each planer thermoelectric element is 30mm*4mm with a thickness of 50 μm for P-type Bismuth Tellurium (Bi2Te3)-based/ poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) leg. A single thermoleg with this dimension can generate a voltage of 5.38 mV at a temperature difference of 70 K. The calculated Seebeck Coefficient of a single thermoleg is 76.86 μV/K. This work demonstrates that low-cost printing technology is promising for the fabrication of f-TEGs.

A simple sonochemical method has been employed for the surface functionalization of carbon nanotubes. Pristine single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were irradiated by ultrasound in methyl methacrylate monomer. Polymer grafted carbon nanotubes were easily prepared by in situ sonochemically initiated radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate. FT-IR, TGA, SEM and TEM were used to characterize the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) grafted SWNTs. The surface-modified SWNTs afforded are then dispersible in good solvents for PMMA, such as dichloromethane and chloroform. The ‘green’ value involved in this simplifying processing contains low hazard, clean operation, reduced chemical consumption and short time, which undoubtedly generate profound impact on the development of carbon nanotube based nanochemistry and large scale nanotextiles application.

Research was conducted to improve performance of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates based on tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)¨Caluminum (Alq3). Based on double layer structure, indium tin oxide(ITO)/N,N’Diphenyl-N-N’-di(m-tdyl) benzidine (TPD)/Alq3/Al, flexible OLEDs on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates were fabricated by physical vapor deposition (PVD) method, with the Alq3 layer deposited at 90°C , 120°C and 150°C, respectively. It was found that the temperature had great effect on the surface morphology of Alq3 and the devices fabricated at high temperature (150°C) showed a higher external efficiency than those fabricated at low temperature (90°C , 120°C).

Multi wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) doping poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) : poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) was used as hole injection layer to improve performance of OLEDs based on Alq3. PEDOT:PSS, which was doped by 0.2 wt.%, 0.4 wt.%, 0.6 wt.%, 0.8 wt.% and 1 wt.% MWCNTs, was coated on clean PET substrate with ITO by spin- coating method. The light-emitting layer (Alq3) and cathode layer (Al) were deposited by PVD method. It was found that the electroluminescence (EL) intensity of the OLEDs were highly improved by adopting MWCNTs doping PEDOT:PSS as hole injection layer. The luminous intensity obtained from the device with a concentration of 0.4 wt.% MWCNTs in the PEDOT:PSS layer was three folds as those adopted from device without MWCNTS doping in the PEDOT:PSS layer.

The Hainan black-crested gibbon Nomascus sp. cf. nasutus hainanus is on the verge of extinction. Following studies in the late 1980s and early 1990s only limited observations were made of the remaining population in the Bawangling National Nature Reserve on Hainan Island, China, and the most optimistic estimation of the population size was 23 individuals. To determine the present status of this gibbon, we surveyed the western part of the Reserve, from where the gibbons were previously known, using transects (November–December 2001), listening post (February–April 2002) and interviews with reserve staff (November–December 2001 and February–April 2002). Three groups of gibbons were sighted comprising at least 10–12 individuals including juveniles and infants. A fourth group, possibly comprising 2–7 individuals, was heard but not seen. Compared to an unpublished survey by reserve staff in 2000, the population appears to have decreased. Surveying of this gibbon population will continue, in particular to determine the composition of the one group that was heard but not seen and to carry out a survey of the eastern part of the Reserve to determine whether or not any gibbons survive there. The Forestry Bureau of Hainan is applying to the Central Government for an enlargement of the area of the reserve and more staff to help prevent illegal poaching and logging.

A novel silicon cleaning process using strontium metal thin films has been described. The silicon dioxide de-oxidation process using strontium as catalysts has been studied by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and other in-situ techniques. A Sr/Si template for the epitaxial growth of SrTiO3 single crystals on silicon can be directly formed as a result of the above Sr-de-oxidation process. The de-oxidation mechanism can be explained after solving the interfacial structures of the Sr/SiO2/Si system with in-situ XPS.

A method for removing SiO2 and producing an ordered Si(100) surface using Sr or SrO has been developed. In this technique, a few monolayers of Sr or SrO are deposited onto the as received Si(100) wafer in a ultrahigh vacuum molecular beam epitaxy system. The substrate is then heated to ∼800°C for about 5 minutes, the SiO2 is removed to leave behind a Sr terminated Si(100) surface. This Sr terminated Si(100) surface is well suited for the growth of crystalline high k dielectric SrTiO3 films. Temperature programmed desorption measurements were carried out to understand the mechanism of removing SiO2 from Si(100) using Sr or SrO. The species we observed coming off the surface during the temperature cycle was mainly SiO and O, no significant amount of Sr containing species was observed. We conclude that the SiO2 removal is due to the catalyst reaction SiO2 + Sr (or SrO) → SiO (g) + O + Sr (or SrO). The reaction happened through several intermediate steps. The reaction SiO2 + Si → 2SiO (g) at the SiO2/Si interface is limited and the pit formation is suppressed. The main roles that Sr or SrO play during the oxide removal process are catalysts promoting SiO formation and preventing further etching and the formation of pits in the substrate.
