Adsorption of the ${\text{AuCl}}_4^{-}$ complex by kaolinites of different crystallinities (Kao-1 and Kao-2) from 100 mL of AuCl3·HCl·4H2O solutions containing 10,000, 500 and 50 µg/L Au and 1 g of kaolinite was measured at pH 3 to 9 at ambient temperature and 120°C. Adsorption from the 50, 500 and 10,000 µg Au/L solutions ranged from 64 to 100% at ambient temperature and from 68 to 100% at 120°C for both kaolinites. Adsorption was pH dependent with a maximum at pH <5 and a minimum at neutral and alkaline pHs. Up to 1 mg Au/g kaolinite was adsorbed by the kaolinites at both ambient temperature and 120°C. In a separate Au adsorption experiment using 100 mL of 4000 µg Au/L solutions and 0.02 to 1.0 g of Kao-1, up to 8.55 mg Au/ g of kaolinite was adsorbed. The pH dependence of Au adsorption suggests that surface complexation of Au to alumina sites at the edges of kaolinite particles might be involved. Protonation of kaolinite surface sites might facilitate adsorption of the anionic Au complex. Both kaolinites adsorbed ~100% of added Au at low pH values, but the less crystalline kaolinite (Kao-2) adsorbed more Au at high pH. Greater Au adsorption would be expected for the less crystalline Kao-2 sample if adsorption occurred at the edges of kaolinite particles.

Effective suppression of transverse stimulated Raman scattering (TSRS) in a large-aperture potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystal is an important scientific and technical problem in high-intensity laser research and applications. In this work, a method to suppress TSRS using pulse stacking is proposed. The method suppresses TSRS significantly, with greater numbers of subpulses producing more obvious suppression effects, and the threshold intensity growth rate of the 3ω laser in the KDP crystal reaches up to about 1.9 when the stacked pulse contains four subpulses. This suppression effect is attributed to the fact that the polarization directions of adjacent subpulses are perpendicular to each other. The method can be used to suppress other nonlinear effects, including transverse stimulated Brillouin scattering in large-aperture optical devices and stimulated rotational Raman scattering in long air paths.

Transverse stimulated Raman scattering (TSRS) is strongly generated in the third-harmonic-generation crystal potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and can even damage the KDP crystal in inertial confinement fusion drivers. In this work, a method to suppress TSRS is proposed in which the polarization control plate (PCP) is moved to a new position in the existing optical path. The proposed method can suppress TSRS significantly and doubles the laser threshold intensity in KDP crystal when the order of the PCP is 16. This result is attributed to the reduction of the gain length for the Stokes radiation. The proposed method may also be used to suppress other nonlinear effects, including transverse stimulated Brillouin scattering in large-aperture optical components.

Gongyi is the birthplace and one of the most famous production areas of white porcelain in China. In this study, white porcelain samples from the Northern Wei to Tang Dynasties excavated from Baihe and Huangye kiln sites were analyzed to investigate microstructure and its physicochemical basis. The result demonstrates that the formation of an interaction layer of Anorthite crystals and the accompanied phase-separation structure at glaze-body boundary is a common character of microstructure. And there is little probability for crystal precipitation within the glaze layer.

In the present study electronic structures of the interface between SBT and transition metal including Au, Ag, Cu, Ni, Pt were studied by employing DV-Xα method. The calculations were performed on cluster models of the interface which were SrTa8O36-M2 (M=Au, Ag, Cu, Ni, Pt, and Bi). The calculations results including Fermi level, bond order, atomic charge distribution shown that there existed significant hybridization between metal d states and the O2p–Ta3d states. The Fermi levels of the metals located in the gap of SBT and metal-induced states, and the position of the Fermi levels did not change greatly due to the different transition metals. The charge of Sr and the transition metal atom transferred to oxygen atom, so that the bonding between Sr (or metal atom) and O was almost ionic bonding. The interactions between transition metal and SBT mainly came from the Coulomb interaction.
