Liquid metal flows are important for many industrial processes, including liquid metal batteries (LMBs), whose efficiency and lifetime can be affected by fluid mixing. We experimentally investigate flows driven by electrical currents in an LMB model. In our cylindrical apparatus, we observe a poloidal flow that descends near the centreline for strong currents, and a poloidal flow that rises near the centreline for weak currents. The first case is consistent with electrovortex flow, which is an interaction between current and its own magnetic field, whereas the second case is consistent with an interaction between current and the external field, which drives Ekman pumping. Notably, we also observe an intermediate case where the two behaviours appear to compete. Comparing results with Frick et al. (2022 J. Fluid Mech. 949, A20), we test prior estimates of the scaling of flow speed with current to predict the observed reversal. Based on these data, we propose two different ways to apply the Davidson et al. (1999 J. Fluid Mech. 245, 669–699) poloidal suppression theory that explain both experimental results simultaneously: either taking the wire radius into account to scale the Lorentz force, or taking viscous dissipation into account to scale the swirl velocity, following Herreman et al. (2021 J. Fluid Mech. 915, A17).

Aircraft ground taxiing contributes significantly to carbon emissions and engine wear. The electric towing tractor (ETT) addresses these issues by towing the aircraft to the runway end, thereby minimising ground taxiing. As the complexity of ETT towing operations increases, both the towing distance and time increase significantly, and the original method for estimating the number of ETTs is no longer applicable. Due to the substantial acquisition cost of ETT and the need to reduce waste while ensuring operational efficiency, this paper introduces for the first time an ETT quantity estimation model that combines simulation and vehicle scheduling models. The simulation model simulates the impact of ETT on apron operations, taxiing on taxiways and takeoffs and landings on runways. Key timing points for ETT usage by each aircraft are identified through simulation, forming the basis for determining the minimum number of vehicles required for airport operations using a hard-time window vehicle scheduling model. To ensure the validity of the model, simulation model verification is conducted. Furthermore, the study explores the influence of vehicle speed and airport scale on the required number of ETTs. The results demonstrate the effective representation of real-airport operations by the simulation model. ETT speed, airport runway and taxiway configurations, takeoff and landing frequencies and imbalances during peak periods all impact the required quantity of ETTs. A comprehensive approach considering these factors is necessary to determine the optimal number of ETTs.

We present direct numerical simulation (DNS) and modelling of incompressible, turbulent, generalized Couette–Poiseuille flow. A particular example is specified by spherical coordinates $(Re,\theta,\phi )$, where $Re = 6000$ is a global Reynolds number, $\phi$ denotes the angle between the moving plate, velocity-difference vector and the volume-flow vector and $\tan \theta$ specifies the ratio of the mean volume-flow speed to the plate speed. The limits $\phi \to 0^\circ$ and $\phi \to 90^\circ$ give alignment and orthogonality, respectively, while $\theta \to 0^\circ,\ \theta \to 90^\circ$ correspond respectively to pure Couette flow in the $x$ direction and pure Poiseuille flow at angle $\phi$ to the $x$ axis. Competition between the Couette-flow shear and the forced volume flow produces a mean-velocity profile with directional twist between the confining walls. Resultant mean-speed profiles relative to each wall generally show a log-like region. An empirical flow model is constructed based on component log and log-wake velocity profiles relative to the two walls. This gives predictions of four independent components of shear stress and also mean-velocity profiles as functions of $(Re,\theta,\phi )$. The model captures DNS results including the mean-flow twist. Premultiplied energy spectra are obtained for symmetric flows with $\phi =90^\circ$. With increasing $\theta$, the energy peak gradually moves in the direction of increasing $k_x$ and decreasing $k_z$. Rotation of the energy spectrum produced by the faster moving velocity near the wall is also observed. Rapid weakening of a spike maxima in the Couette-type flow regime indicates attenuation of large-scale roll structures, which is also shown in the $Q$-criterion visualization of a three-dimensional time-averaged flow.

SiO2 sols were made unstable by addition of Ca2+ ions. The resulting states of instability were classified as gelation, flocculation, and precipitation by means of observation, by checking the Tyndall effects on the supernatant or suspending solution, as appropriate, and by measuring the apparent densities of flocculated mass. The concentrations of free Ca2+ ions left in solution were measured by means of a Ca2+ ion selective electrode. The amounts sorbed onto SiO2 particles were then calculated by material balance. It was found that while the amount sorbed dictates the limit of stability, the SiO2 concentration in the mixture is an important factor deciding the state of instability. Depending on the SiO2 concentration, there were two distinct flocs with the apparent floc density of 6 ± 1 and 12 ± 1 mg SiO2/ml.

This study presents novel findings on stochastic electron heating via a random electron cyclotron wave (ECW) in a spherical tokamak. Hard x ray measurements demonstrate the time evolution of hard x ray counts at different energy bands, consistent with predictions from the stochastic heating model. The ECW heating rate shows a positive correlation with applied power, confirming the effectiveness of stochastic heating. Remarkably, the ECW-driven plasma current remains insensitive to ECW incidence angle, consistent with model predictions. The observed stochastic heating of electrons offers potential for exploring innovative non-inductive current drive modes in spherical tokamaks. This research contributes to the understanding of plasma behaviour and motivates the development of new models for non-inductive current drive in fusion devices.

An emergent volume electron microscopy technique called cryogenic serial plasma focused ion beam milling scanning electron microscopy (pFIB/SEM) can decipher complex biological structures by building a three-dimensional picture of biological samples at mesoscale resolution. This is achieved by collecting consecutive SEM images after successive rounds of FIB milling that expose a new surface after each milling step. Due to instrumental limitations, some image processing is necessary before 3D visualization and analysis of the data is possible. SEM images are affected by noise, drift, and charging effects, that can make precise 3D reconstruction of biological features difficult. This article presents Okapi-EM, an open-source napari plugin developed to process and analyze cryogenic serial pFIB/SEM images. Okapi-EM enables automated image registration of slices, evaluation of image quality metrics specific to pFIB-SEM imaging, and mitigation of charging artifacts. Implementation of Okapi-EM within the napari framework ensures that the tools are both user- and developer-friendly, through provision of a graphical user interface and access to Python programming.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarm coverage is one of the key technologies for multi-UAV cooperation, which plays an important role in collaborative investigation, detection, rescue and other applications. Aiming at the coverage optimisation problem of UAV in the target area, a collaborative visual coverage control method under positioning uncertainty is presented. First, the visual perception area with imprecise localisation, UAV model and sensor model are created based on the given task environment. Second, a regional division algorithm for the target task area is designed based on the principle of Guaranteed Voronoi (GV) diagram. Then a visual area coverage planning algorithm is designed, in which the task area is allocated to the UAV according to the corresponding weight coefficient of each area, and the input control law is adjusted by the expected state information of the UAV, so that the optimal coverage quality target value and the maximum coverage of the target area can be achieved. Finally, three task scenarios for regional division and coverage planning are simulated respectively, the results show that the proposed area coverage planning algorithm can realise the optimal regional distribution and can obtain more than 90% coverage in different scenarios.

The great demographic pressure brings tremendous volume of beef demand. The key to solve this problem is the growth and development of Chinese cattle. In order to find molecular markers conducive to the growth and development of Chinese cattle, sequencing was used to determine the position of copy number variations (CNVs), bioinformatics analysis was used to predict the function of ZNF146 gene, real-time fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used for CNV genotyping and one-way analysis of variance was used for association analysis. The results showed that there exists CNV in Chr 18: 47225201-47229600 (5.0.1 version) of ZNF146 gene through the early sequencing results in the laboratory and predicted ZNF146 gene was expressed in liver, skeletal muscle and breast cells, and was amplified or overexpressed in pancreatic cancer, which promoted the development of tumour through bioinformatics. Therefore, it is predicted that ZNF146 gene affects the proliferation of muscle cells, and then affects the growth and development of cattle. Furthermore, CNV genotyping of ZNF146 gene was three types (deletion type, normal type and duplication type) by Real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (qPCR). The association analysis results showed that ZNF146-CNV was significantly correlated with rump length of Qinchuan cattle, hucklebone width of Jiaxian red cattle and heart girth of Yunling cattle. From the above results, ZNF146-CNV had a significant effect on growth traits, which provided an important candidate molecular marker for growth and development of Chinese cattle.

Background: A correlation between the nerve root sedimentation sign (SedSign) and neurogenic claudication has been demonstrated; though it did not account for leg-dominant pain. This study analyzed the utility of SedSign to diagnose leg-dominant pain using validated classification systems. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed prospective data from 367 patients with back or leg pain collected between January 1, 2012 to May 31, 2018. Baseline characteristics included SSPc (Saskatchewan Spine Pathway classification), Oswestry disability index (ODI), visual analogue pain scores (VAS), and EuroQol Group 5-Dimension Self-Report (EQ5D). Inter- and intra-rater reliability for SedSign was 73% and 91%. Results: SedSign was positive in 111 (30.2%) and negative in 256 (69.8%) patients. Univariate analysis showed a correlation between SedSign and age, male sex, ODI, EQ5D, cross-sectional area (CSA) of stenosis, antero-posterior diameter of stenosis, and leg-dominant pain; negative SedSign was correlated with back-dominant pain. Multivariate analysis revealed an association between SedSign and age, male sex, CSA stenosis, and ODI walking distance. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of SedSign for leg-dominant pain were 33.5%, 83.2%, 77.0%, and 57.3%. Conclusions: SedSign has high specificity but low sensitivity for leg-dominant pain. Despite a similar correlation between SedSign and neurogenic claudication or sciatica, significance was lost on multivariate analysis.

Background: Image-guided navigation is routinely used in spine surgery to improve placement of pedicle screws. However, most reports have relied on two-dimensional X-ray evaluation to determine accuracy of screw positioning. In this study, computed tomography (CT) and O-arm imaging enabled a detailed three-dimensional comparison of screw placement. The objective was to compare the accuracy of pedicle screw placement with intraoperative X-ray versus O-arm image-guided navigation. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of image-guided pedicle screw placement in patients who underwent spinal instrumentation. Post-operative CT and O-arm imaging allowed grading of screw accuracy based on pedicle breaches. Clinical outcomes included patient and operative factors. Results: Pedicle screws were placed in 208 patients (1116 screws). Three-dimensional O-arm guidance was utilized for 126 patients, while the remainder underwent two-dimensional X-ray imaging and post-operative CT assessment. O-arm navigation was associated with improved pedicle screw accuracy: pedicle breaches were more likely to be low grade (odds ratio 2.84, p=0.001) and less likely to be medium grade (odds ratio 0.35, p=0.007) or high grade (odds ratio 0.31, p=0.025). Conclusions: This study provided a detailed comparison of surgical accuracy with X-ray versus O-arm guidance. Navigation with O-arm imaging is associated with benefits in spinal instrumentation, without impacting operative risks for patients.

The root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne javanica, is a major problem for the production of Sacha Inchi plants. We examined the effects of strip intercropping of Sacha Inchi/Chinese leek of 3–4 years on the seasonal dynamics of plant and soil traits in tropical China. Results indicated that in the intercropping system, a partially temporal divergence of belowground resource acquisition via niche separation occurred throughout the growing seasons, besides a complete spatially-separated plant height between the two crops. Compared with Sacha Inchi monoculture, the increased seed yield per unit area in the intercropping system was mainly attributed to the higher plant survival rate, rather than the enhanced plant traits of healthy plants. Intercropping greatly suppressed M. javanica populations only in the wet season, compared with monoculture; which may be associated with the combined effects of the direct allelopathy and indigenous microbe induced-suppressiveness. Intercropping did not affect microbial richness and α-diversity in the rhizosphere, except for the decreased fungal richness. Both bacterial and fungal composition and structure were diverged between monoculture v. intercropping system. The relative abundances of the dominant bacterial genera (Bacillus, Gaiellales, Lactococcus, Massilia and Lysobacter, etc.) differed significantly between the two cropping systems. For fungi, intercropping decreased the relative abundances of Fusarium and Gibberella, but increased those of Nectriaceae_unclassified, Chaetomiaceae, Humicola and Mortierella. Overall, Sacha Inchi/Chinese leek intercropping suppressed M. javanica populations and shifted microbial compositions (especially decreased pathogen-containing Fusarium). The increased yield and economic returns in this intercropping system provide valid information for the effective agricultural management.

Integrated Natural Resource Conservation and Development (INRCD) Projects are efforts at worldwide locations to promote economic development of local communities consistent with conservation of natural resources. This umbrella term includes Integration Conservation and Development Projects (ICDPs) introduced by the World Wide Fund to combine social development and conservation s through the use of socio-economic investments, and the Integrated Natural Resource Management (INRM) research and development efforts that have employed a systems approach for quantitative modeling and optimization. In the spirit of the INRCD framework, we describe the development of a system-level agriculture and energy model comprising engineering and economic models for crop, irrigation, and energy subsystem designs for a community in Central Uganda. The model architecture is modular allowing modifications for different system configurations and project locations. We include some initial results and discuss next steps for system optimization, refining model assumptions, and modeling community social benefits as drivers of such projects.

Active skin-friction reduction in a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) is experimentally studied based on time-periodic blowing through one array of streamwise slits. The control parameters investigated include the blowing amplitude A+ and frequency f+, which, expressed in wall units, range from 0 to 2 and from 0.007 to 0.56, respectively. The maximum local friction reduction downstream of the slits reaches more than 70 %; friction does not fully recover to the state of the natural TBL until 500 wall units behind the slits. A positive net power saving is possible, and 4.01 % is measured with a local friction drag reduction (DR) of 49 %. A detailed analysis based on hot-wire, particle image velocimetry and smoke-wire flow visualization data is performed to understand the physical mechanisms involved. Spectral analysis indicates weakened near-wall large-scale structures. Flow visualizations show stabilized streaky structures and a locally relaminarized flow. Two factors are identified to contribute to the DR. Firstly, the jets from the slits create streamwise vortices in the near-wall region, preventing the formation of near-wall streaks and interrupting the turbulence generation cycle. Secondly, the zero-streamwise-momentum fluid associated with the jets also accounts for the DR. A closed-loop opposing control system is developed, along with an open-loop desynchronized control scheme, to quantify the two contributions. The latter is found to account for 77 % of the DR, whereas the former is responsible for 23 %. An empirical scaling of the DR is also proposed, which provides valuable insight into the TBL control physics.
