The formation of nanosized porous oxide layers on titanium (Ti) by asymmetric alternating current anodizing in sulfuric acid has been studied using electrochemical techniques. In order to prevent spark discharge at Ti electrode upon its anodization in 1.0 M H2SO4 solution, the magnitude of the cathodic current is reduced using a special electrical circuit consisting of a variable resistor and two diodes. The unique surface treatment approach gives rise to the formation of nanosized porous layer in a very short period of time and without spark discharge. The surface of porous layers thus obtained has in vitro apatite-forming ability.
Intercalated compounds of montmorillonite and poly-6-amide were prepared by heating mixtures of ɛ-caprolactam and 5, 10, 15 and 30 wt% of montmorillonite, cation-exchanged with NH3+(CH2)11COOH, at 250°C in a nitrogen atmosphere, and examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and elemental analysis. ɛ-caprolactam was polymerized to poly-6-amide by the heat treatment. The mean number-average molecular weight decreased from 3·6 × 104 to 0·8 × 104 with increasing montmorillonite content. TEM showed that considerable swelling had taken place subsequent to polymerization and that the clay layers were uniformly distributed in the final clay/poly-6-amide products. Both XRD and TEM showed that the basal spacing of the compound increased from 51 Å to 210 Å with increasing polyamide content. The driving force for the swelling was considered to be a combination of the polymerization energy of ɛ-caprolactam and the attractive interaction between the interlayer cation and ɛ-caprolactam.
Micropore distribution and effective size of the channels of natural sepiolite from Turkey were measured by the BET method. Before the BET measurement, the samples were treated under a water vapour atmosphere at various pressures to fill progressively the sepiolite micropores with water. The surface areas measured by means of N2 adsorption decreased with increased vapour pressures of water. The outer surface area was estimated by comparison of the surface area of the vacuum-dried sepiolite with that filled with adsorbed water. The total surface area was ∼290 m2/g, and the outer surface area was 170 m2/g, the difference being attributed to the structural micropores of the sepiolite. The ratio of the surface areas possessed by the channels and that of the outer surface suggest that the mean thickness of the sepiolite fibre was ∼12 nm. The effective size of the channels was estimated from the number of various-sized molecules sorbed by the sepiolite, the results showing that molecules larger than benzene could not migrate into the channels.
The objective of this study was to examine temporal and regional variations of sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (sCJD) in a retrospective study using Japanese national surveillance data from 2001 to 2010. We calculated the incidence of sCJD by age and sex, derived the standardized incidence in each of the 47 prefectures, and performed spatial disease clustering analysis. The average annual incidence of sCJD was 1·026 per million in men (637 patients) and 1·132 per million in women (733 patients), a significant sex difference after adjustment for age (P = 0·001). The ratios of familial CJD to sCJD apparently increased between 2001–2005 and 2006–2010, possibly as a result of the nationwide introduction of genetic testing after 2006. Based on the data of 2006–2010, certain geographical clusters of sCJD were identified. The incidence of sCJD was higher in several specific prefectures compared to the national average. Thus, sCJD appears to have regional variations, suggesting the existence of genetic or region-specific factors affecting the incidence of the disease.
The Commission 4 Organizing Committee began its work for the 2009-2012 triennium by revising the commission's terms of reference, which serve as our “mission statement.” The new terms of reference are:
(a) Maintain cooperation and collaboration between the national offices providing ephemerides, prediction of phenomena, astronomical reference data, and navigational almanacs.
(b) Encourage agreement on the bases (reference systems, time scales, models, and constants) of astronomical ephemerides and reference data in the various countries. Promote improvements to the usability and accuracy of astronomical ephemerides, and provide information comparing computational methods, models, and results to ensure the accuracy of data provided.
(c) Maintain databases, available on the Internet to the national ephemeris offices and qualified researchers, containing observations of all types on which the ephemerides are based. Promote the continued importance of observations needed to improve the ephemerides, and encourage prompt availability of these observations, especially those from space missions, to the science community.
(d) Encourage the development of software and web sites that provide astronomical ephemerides, prediction of phenomena, and astronomical reference data to the scientific community and public.
Promote the development of explanatory material that fosters better understanding of the use and bases of ephemerides and related data.
The IAU Working Group (WG) on Numerical Standards for Fundamental Astronomy has been tasked with updating the IAU Current Best Estimates (CBEs), conforming with the IAU Resolutions, IERS Conventions and Système International d'Unités whenever possible. As part of its effort to achieve this, the WG is working in close cooperation with IAU Commissions 4 and 52, the IERS, and the BIPM Consultative Committee for Units.
JPL planetary ephemeris development has been very active assimilating measurements from current planetary missions and supporting future missions. The NASA Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission with launch in 2009 requires knowledge of the Earth and Mars ephemerides with 30m accuracy. By comparison, the accuracy of the Mars ephemeris in the widely used DE405 ephemeris was about 3 km. Meeting the MSL needs requires an ongoing program of range and very-long baseline interferometry measurements of Mars orbiting spacecraft. The JPL ephemeris DE421 was released three months before the landing of the Phoenix mission on Mars, and has met the 300m requirement. Continued measurements are planned to support the MSL landing.
Systemic autoimmune diseases, including ulcerative colitis, may involve the inner ear. Several ulcerative colitis cases presenting with sensorineural hearing loss have been reported. We report the T2-weighted, three-dimensional, inner-ear magnetic resonance imaging findings in the inner ears of two such patients.
Methods:
Case reports and a review of the literature concerning autoimmune disease and sensorineural hearing loss are presented.
Results:
We describe two cases of ulcerative colitis with sensorineural hearing loss in which three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging revealed obliteration of the inner ear. Those inner ears with obliteration had severe hearing loss, and responded poorly to steroid therapy.
Conclusion:
To our knowledge, there has been no previous published report of the T2-weighted, inner-ear magnetic resonance imaging findings of cases of ulcerative colitis with sensorineural hearing loss. This paper represents the first published report in the world literature of inner-ear obliteration in such patients. Three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging is beneficial in elucidating the pathophysiology of the inner-ear involvement seen in ulcerative colitis.
The IAU Division I Working Group on Nomenclature for Fundamental Astronomy (NFA) was established by the IAU XXV General Assembly with the task of providing proposals for new nomenclature associated with the implementation of the IAU XXIV GA resolutions (2000) and to make related educational efforts for bringing the issue to the notice of scientists in the community.
This business meeting was held from 16:00 to 17:30. Toshio Fukushima and George Kaplan were welcomed as the next president and vice-president, respectively. Traumatic luxation of the stapes into the vestibule is a rare entity, and the disease complicated with pneumolabyrinth is extremely rare. We report the case of a 72-year-old woman with pneumolabyrinth associated with a stapediovestibular dislocation. The patient presented with vertigo and nystagmus following penetrating trauma to the middle ear. High resolution computed tomography scans demonstrated air in the vestibule and dislocation of the stapes. Exploratory tympanotomy demonstrated oozing of the perilymph from the oval window and depression of the stapes into the vestibule. Pneumolabyrinth and stapes luxation detected by high resolution computed tomography should be predictive of a perilymphatic fistula.
We present the proposals of the IAU Division I Working Group on Nomenclature for Fundamental Astronomy (NFA) that was formed at the IAU XXV General Assembly in 2003.
Pseudoelastic behavior of Fe3Ga single crystals regardless of a thermoelastic martensitic transformation was investigated focusing on the dislocation structure and the phase constituent. Large pseudoelasticity of 5 % recoverable strain appeared in Fe3Ga single crystals sufficiently annealed in the D03 single-phase region. In the crystals, uncoupled and paired 1/4[111] superpartial dislocations moved dragging the nearest-neighbor (NN) and next-nearest neighbor (NNN) anti-phase boundaries (APBs) during loading, respectively. During unloading, these APBs pulled back the superpartials resulting in large pseudoelasticity, which is similar to D03-ordered Fe3Al crystals. The dislocation configuration was closely related to the ordered domain structure developed in the D03 phase. Moreover, the precipitation of the thermally stable L12 phase was so slow that the metastable D03 phase developed even if the crystals were annealed in the (a+ L12) and (D03+ L12) phase fields in Fe-Ga equilibrium phase diagram. The metastable D03 phase also demonstrated large pseudoelasticity of which recovery ratio was above 80 %. On the other hand, if the L12 phase precipitated by long time annealing in the (a+ L12) region, the reversible motion of 1/4[111] superpartials was suppressed by the L12 phase resulting in a decrease in recovery ratio. In addition, the crystals aged in the (a+ D03) phase region showed small strain recovery.
In order to fabricate good hetero-interface of GaAs/InGaP system by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE), we studied the indium atom distribution by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The systematic XPS depth profile analyses of InGaP/GaAs revealed that InGaP surface contains an excess amount of indium atoms. The excess indium atoms diffuse into GaAs layer and cause surface segregation. We have developed a novel gas switching sequence to switch the growth from InGaP to GaAs. That is, after the growth of InGaP, trimethylgallium (TMGa) was pre-introduced to the reactor to terminate the excess amount of indium atoms on InGaP layer. Then tertiarybutylarsine (TBAs) was allowed to flow on the InGaP surface to initiate GaAs growth. This new sequence reduced the amount of indium atoms at the interface and contributed to suppress the inter-diffusion and surface segregation of indium atoms.
Research in Celestial Mechanics, for the past three years, has mainly focused on the understanding of Chaos on all its aspects. The always larger number of potential applications (meteors, KBO, NEA, asteroids of the main belt but also exoplanets or galactic motions) and the development of new efficient tools, like the symplectic integrators, have allowed the passage from QUALITATIVE models (for example the transfer mechanisms) to real QUANTITATIVE results (like the calculation of lifetimes). This important step has contributed to (re)create collaborations between theoreticians and observers (for example, in the prediction of catastrophic impacts) and to situate the Celestial Mechanics in a wider scientific context.
We synthesized the highly ordered mesoporous thin films with alkyltrimethyl-ammonium (CnTMA+). The arrangement of mesopores was depend on the Si/surfactant ratio. The hexagonal(P6mm) arrangement was observed, when Surfactant/Si ratio was 1/10. Increasing the Surfactant/Si ratio to 1.6/10, the cubic (Pm3n) arrangements were observed. A steel vessel for the measurement of the nitrogen adsorption isotherms of thin film on the substrate was designed. It was found that mesopore arrangements in the film is more regular than that in the powder samples prepared by the same acidic synthesis conditions.
Coronal images were taken in the light of the He I 10830 Å line, the 10000 Å continuum, and the Fe XIV 5303 Å line, with the aim of studying the thermal structure of the corona. In addition, spectroscopic observations were made in the violet wavelength region (3760-4060 Å) and near-infrared (10745-10835 Å), to obtain details of physical conditions of the corona, especially of its cool part. The data obtained do not show any distinct cool structures other than ordinary prominences. Some preliminary results concerning the corona and prominence structures are given.
The effects of biperiden and piroheptine on the serum level of zotepine were studied in 15 schizophrenic and 6 mentally retarded in-patients. Neither of these anticholinergic drugs affected the serum level of zotepine nor caused significant side-effects. In the schizophrenics the total scores on the BPRS did not change significantly with either combination of drugs.
