This paper briefly reviews our recent studies, which aimed to investigate the effects of 1) the Ca2+ and PO43- ions flow and 2) amelogenins on the lengthwise growth of octacalcium phosphate (OCP), which is a potent precursor of enamel apatite crystal. OCP crystals were grown at 37°C in a dual membrane system under various amount of ionic inflow into a reaction space, using 1) 5-30mM Ca and PO4 solutions as ionic sources and 2) extracted bovine amelogenin and recombinant murine amelogenins (rM179, rM166). With an increase in the amount of Ca2+ and/or PO43- ions flow, the length of OCP crystal increased, while the width decreased. As a result, the length to width (L/W) ratio of crystal changed from 3 to 95, while the width to thickness (W/T) ratio from 32 to 9. The effect of amelogenins was unique, regardless of the type of amelogenins: Rod-like and prism-like OCP crystals with large L/W (61∼107) and small W/T (1.3∼2.2) ratios were formed in 10% amelogenin gels. In contrast, characteristic ribbon-like OCP crystals grew without protein and with gelatin, albumin, polyacrylamide gel and agarose gel. Specific interaction of amelogenins with OCP crystal was ascribed to the self-assembly property of amelogenin molecules and their hydrophobic nature. It was suggested that ionic flow and amelogenins play some critical roles in the elongated growth of enamel crystals.

Increases in height were reported in children chronically exposed prenatally and postnatally to D2 receptor-blocking drugs. A possible haplotypic association between stature and the DRD2 gene was also reported. In this study, we examined linkage between stature and DRD2 by genotyping a dinucleotide repeat polymorphism in 79 sib-pairs aged 8–17 years. An association between stature and a putative functional polymorphism in the promoter region of the DRD2 gene was examined in the sib-pairs and in 125 unrelated male adults. All the subjects were Japanese. Linkage (p = 0.004, SIBPAL) and an association (p = 0.009, paired t-test, in the sib-pairs; p = 0.006, ANOVA, in the adults) with stature were suggested. These findings indicate that DRD2 is one of the genes that contribute to heritability of stature.

Biaxially aligned film growth by dual-ion-beam sputtering methods were studied for fluorite type (Zr0.85Y0.15O1.93(YSZ), Hf0.74Yb0.26O1.87, CeO2), pyrochlore type (Zr2Sm2O7), and rare-earth C type (Y2O3, Sm2O3) oxides on polycrystalline Ni-based alloy substrates. Cubetextured (all axes aligned with a <100> axis substrate normal) films were obtained for fluorite and pyrochlore ones by low energy (<300 eV) ion bombardment at low temperatures (< 300 °C). Besides, cube textured Y2O3 films were obtained in far narrower conditions with a quite low energy (150 eV)-ion bombardment at the temperature of 300 °C. The assisting ion energy dependence was discussed in connection with lattice energies for these oxide crystals.

Biaxially aligned YSZ thin films with strong [100] fiber texture were formed on a polycrystalline Ni-based alloy by off-normal ion-beam-assisted deposition. Growth structures were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), etc., and the alignment mechanism was discussed using a selective growth model. Peculiar structural evolution of the crystalline orientation was observed and its development was well described by an exponential equation. It was explained as a collaboration of an anisotropic growth condition and epitaxial crystallization. The [100] fiber texture was formed by columnar structures of diameter of 30–100 nm, which were composed of 5–10 nm diameter crystallites. Very smooth surfaces were observed by AFM imaging with a roughness of 2–3 nm and a peculiar ripple structure. The origin of the azimuthal alignment was discussed with emphasis on the surface structure of YSZ films produced using ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) and the etching rate measurements of (100) surfaces of YSZ single crystals.

Biaxially aligned YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) films were fabricated on random Ni-based alloy tapes with yttrium stabilized-zirconia (YSZ) buffer layers deposited by ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD). Ar+ ion bombardment was found to have two significant effects on the crystalline structure of the YSZ buffer layers: to align a [100] axis with the substrate normal and a [111] axis with the bombarding beam axis. The resulting YSZ films were biaxially aligned on the random polycrystalline tapes, and the azimuthal distribution of the a- and b-axes of YBCO films on the top of the YSZ films was restricted to 10° FWHM. A critical current density (Jc) of 1.13 × 106 A/cm2 (77 K, 0 T) was obtained, and 1.1 × 105 A/cm2 was maintained at 5 T (77 K, B⊥c). The existence of both intrinsic and extrinsic pinning properties was clearly observed in the angular dependence of Jc with B⊥I. The longitudinal field effect on Jc was clearly observed, which indicated straight transport currents. This is evidence for strongly coupled current paths that demonstrate the bulk pinning properties of YBCO.

We identified pepsinogen C (PGC) gene polymorphisms by means of PCR, which amplified DNA in the region within the intron between exons 7 and 8, and by 6% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Six alleles were found in a Japanese population. The frequencies of these alleles in 408 unrelated Japanese individuals were 0·074, 0·026, 0·335, 0·237, 0·016 and 0·314, respectively. The serum pepsinogen II level significantly decreased in the order of the allele 6 homozygote, the allele 6 heterozygote and the other genotypes (χ2=7·850, D.F.=2, p=0·020). These findings indicated that the genetic background of serum pepsinogen should be considered when screening for stomach cancer by this procedure.

This report summarizes a study of signals for indicating course alterations conducted by the Course Signal Committee of The Mercantile Marine Institute of Japan (President Captain Inazo Ara) as part of the 1995 project entitled ‘Research on Improving Course Signals etc’ sponsored by The Japan Foundation for Shipbuilding Advancement.

The phenomenon of surfactant-mediated growth has been successfully simulated by means of a molecular dynamics method using two-dimensional model atoms interacting via a Lennard-Jones potential. Surfactant atoms were placed on a substrate, and then film atoms were deposited. Under adequate experimental conditions, the surfactant atoms could stay at the growing surface by exchanging their positions with the deposited atoms. Effects of various conditions on the morphology of the film surface were precisely investigated by the simulations.
