We present observations of the Mopra carbon monoxide (CO) survey of the Southern Galactic Plane, covering Galactic longitudes spanning $l = 250^{\circ}$ ($-110^{\circ}$) to $l = 355^{\circ}$ ($-5^{\circ}$), with a latitudinal coverage of at least $|b|<1^\circ$, totalling an area of $>$210 deg$^{2}$. These data have been taken at 0.6 arcmin spatial resolution and 0.1 km s$^{-1}$ spectral resolution, providing an unprecedented view of the molecular gas clouds of the Southern Galactic Plane in the 109–115 GHz $J = 1-0$ transitions of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, and C$^{17}$O.

We demonstrate low-resistivity Ohmic contacts for n-Ge with ultra-shallow junction. Using the impurity δ-doping techniques with Ge homoepitaxy on Ge(111) below 400 ºC, we can achieve a very abrupt doping profile within a nanometer-scale width. By introducing the δ-doping to atomically controlled metal/Ge contacts, the current-voltage characteristics clearly show Ohmic conductions owing to the effective tunneling through the Schottky barrier. This approach is promising for a formation technology of ultra-shallow source/drain contacts for scaled Ge devices.

A cold-adapted influenza A virus, CR-37 (H1N1), derived from genetic reassortment between A/Ann Arbor/6/60 (H2N2) cold-adapted variant virus and A/California/10/78 (H1N1) wild-type virus, was tested in Japanese adult volunteers. The CR-37 live virus preparation induced only low-grade clinical reactionsin volunteers for the first 3–4 days after inoculation. Two vaccinees who did not show any antibody changes became febrile (over 38–0 °C). Skin tests using the vaccine preparation and uninfected allantoic fluid were performed, and indicated that one of these two vaccinees was positive for the CR-37 vaccine preparation. A high proportion of the vaccinees whose sera had a haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) antibody titre against thevaccine strain of ≤ 64 before inoculation, seroconverted in both HI and neuraminidase-inhibition (NA1) antibody titrations, and only a few seroconverted in the titration of antibody against type-specific internal antigens. The serological examinations against heterotypic H1N1 variants indicated that the cold-adapted live influenza virus vaccine could induce a broad spectrum of HI antibody reactivity and immunity of long duration.

The existence of liquid-liquid miscibility gap in ferric ferrous oxide-silica system has been reported, however, the phase separation phenomena and the derived morphology of the phase separated glasses are uncertain. In this study, the melt-quenched samples of 5 Fe3O4-95 SiO2 and 15 Fe3O4-85 SiO2 (mol%) were prepared by melting at 2300°C or 2200°C (expected to be above miscibility gap), and subsequently at 1800°C or 1750°C (in immiscible region) by use of infrared image furnace and quenching at the rate of ≈102 K/sec. The glassy materials exhibited phase separation having discrete spherical particles or interconnected structure due to the composition, melting temperature and time. Also, the segregation of Fe component occurred during melting, which was caused by the difference of specific gravity of components in the melt.

The rate of liquid-liquid phase separation was experimentally studied in the PbO-B2O3 system. The in situ measurements were made by observing the melts with a videocamera continuously as the melts were cooled down from homogenization temperatures at a rate of 2.5 °C/min. The time interval between the beginning and the completion of the darkening of the visual field was determined as a measure of the separation rate. The phase-separation rate was estimated to be at least 900 times larger than that of the metastable phase separation below the liquidus.

In this paper, firstly, the results of deformation experiments which have been made on Al3Ti and Al3Ti-base alloys are reviewed. Secondly, the possibility of the improvement of ductility of Al3Ti by alloying processes is discussed, and then possible alloying elements for this purpose are suggested. Thirdly, the oxidation resistance of Al3Ti is described and then possible future technological applications of Al3Ti are briefly discussed.
