Gut microbiome changed dramatically during pregnancy and played important roles in metabolic status and reproductive endocrinology in mammals. However, investigating the functional microbiota and metabolites to improve the reproductive performance and understanding the host–microbiota interaction are still arduous tasks. This study aims to reveal the dominant strains and metabolites that improve the reproductive performance. We analyzed the fecal microbiota composition and metabolic status of higher yield Chinese pig breed Meishan (MS) sows and lower yield but widespread raised hybrid pig breed Landrace × Yorkshire (L × Y) sows on days 28 and 100 of gestation. Results showed that MS sows had higher litter sizes and steroid hormone level but lower short-chain fatty acid level in feces. Fecal metabolomic analysis revealed that MS sows showed a different metabolic status compared with L × Y sows both at early and late pregnancy, which enriched with phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, bile secretion, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and plant secondary metabolite biosynthesis. In addition, 16S rDNA and internal transcribed spacer sequencing indicated that MS sows showed different structures of microbiota community and exhibited an increased bacterial α-diversity but non-differential fungal α-diversity than L × Y sows. Moreover, we found that the litter sizes and bacteria including Sphaerochaeta, Solibacillus, Oscillospira, Escherichia–Shigella, Prevotellaceae_UCG-001, dgA-11_gut_group, and Bacteroides, as well as fungi including Penicillium, Fusarium, Microascus, Elutherascus, and Heydenia both have positive association to the significant metabolites at the early pregnancy. Our findings revealed significant correlation between reproductive performance and gut microbiome and provided microbial and metabolic perspective to improve litter sizes and steroid hormones of sows.

Systolic blood pressure (SBP) is significantly associated with body composition in children and adolescents. However, which one of the components of body composition is the dominant contributor to SBP in children and adolescents remains unclear. We, therefore, aimed to determine the dominant contributor to SBP among components of body composition in a large cohort of American children and adolescents derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with cross-sectional analysis. In total, 13 618 children and adolescents (median age 13 years; 6107 girls) with available data on whole-body dual-emission X-ray absorptiometry measurements were included. Multiple linear regression showed that SBP was associated with higher total fat-free mass in boys (β = 0·49, P < 0·001) and girls (β = 0·47, P < 0·001) and with higher total fat mass only in boys (β = 0·12, P < 0·001) after adjustment for covariates. When taking fat distribution into consideration, SBP was associated with higher trunk fat mass (boys: β = 0·28, P < 0·001; girls: β = 0·15, P < 0·001) but negatively associated with leg fat mass (Boys: β = −0·14, P < 0·001; Girls: β = −0·11, P < 0·001), in both boys and girls. Dominance analysis showed that total fat-free mass was the dominant contributor to SBP (boys: 49 %; girls: 55·3 %), followed by trunk fat mass (boys: 32·1 %; girls: 26·9 %); leg fat mass contributed the least to SBP in boys (18·9 %) and girls (17·8 %). Our findings indicated that total fat-free mass was not only associated with SBP but also the most dominant contributor to SBP variation in American children and adolescents.

Microplastics (MPs) pollution has been a hot research topic in recent years. MPs are ubiquitous throughout the ecological environment and are eventually accumulated in organisms through inhalation or ingestion. However, given that MPs are inert pollutants, their effects on organisms are not clear. In previous study, we have investigated the effects of polyethylene terephthalate MPs on physiology of Drosophila. What is the effect of polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs)? The results of our experiments show that being exposed to high concentration of PP-MPs have significant effect on Drosophila. PP-MPs exposure can significantly increase locomotor activity and shorten the time of group sleep in Drosophila. In the presence of high concentrations of PP-MPs, the triglyceride content was reduced in females and their ability of egg production was affected. However, there was no significant effect on the level of protein and carbohydrate, or on the food intake. Our experimental results can provide some preliminary data for assessing the potential hazard of PP-MPs to other organisms.

Few studies examined the association of energy, macronutrients and food consumption at dinner v. breakfast with hypercholesterolaemia. A total of 27 911 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003–2016) were included in the cross-sectional study. Energy, macronutrients and food consumption at breakfast, dinner and the difference at dinner v. breakfast (Δratio) were calculated. Multiple logistic regression models and substitution effects of foods at dinner with breakfast were also performed. After adjustment for potential covariates, compared with the lowest quintile, participants in the highest quintile of Δratio in terms of energy had a higher risk of prevalent hypercholesterolaemia (ORΔratio of energy 1·16, 95 % CI (1·01, 1·33)) mainly due to Δratio of low-quality carbohydrates and plant protein (ORΔratio of low-quality carbohydrates 1·19; 95 % CI (1·05, 1·35)); ORΔratio of plant protein 1·13; 95 % CI (1·01, 1·28)). ΔAdded sugars and Δnuts were associated with hypercholesterolaemia (ORΔadded sugars 1·01; 95 % CI (1·00, 1·02)); ORΔnuts 1·08; 95 % CI (1·01, 1·16)). Furthermore, the substitution of added sugars, nuts and processed meat at dinner with breakfast could reduce the OR of hypercholesterolaemia. This study indicated that among US adults, overconsumption of energy, macronutrients including low-quality carbohydrates and plant protein at dinner than breakfast was significantly associated with a higher risk of prevalent hypercholesterolaemia. The replacing of added sugar, nuts and processed meat at dinner with breakfast reduced the risk of prevalent hypercholesterolaemia. This study emphasised the importance of meal timing in the prevention of hypercholesterolaemia.

The International Study of Comparative Health Effectiveness with Medical and Invasive Approaches (ISCHEMIA) found that there was no statistical difference in cardiovascular events with an initial invasive strategy as compared with an initial conservative strategy of guideline-directed medical therapy for patients with moderate to severe ischemia on noninvasive testing. In this study, we describe the reasons that potentially eligible patients who were screened for participation in the ISCHEMIA trial did not advance to enrollment, the step prior to randomization. Of those who preliminarily met clinical inclusion criteria on screening logs submitted during the enrollment period, over half did not participate due to physician or patient refusal, a potentially modifiable barrier. This analysis highlights the importance of physician equipoise when advising patients about participation in randomized controlled trials.

MnOx –CeO2/t-ZrO2 catalyst was prepared by impregnation of nanotetragonal zirconia. The NO conversion of 5 wt% MnOx –CeO2/t-ZrO2 catalyst was 68.1% at 100 °C while that of 30 wt% MnOx –CeO2/t-ZrO2 catalyst was 97.4%. The x-ray diffraction, Brunner–Emmet–Teller measurements (BET), and H2-TPR showed surface properties of the prepared catalysts were good for selective catalytic reduction reactions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicated that Mn4+ and Ce4+ oxidation states were predominant on the surface of the catalyst and so was lattice oxygen which was conducive to Lewis acid sites. NH3-TPD test results demonstrated that Lewis acid sites are predominant on the surface of catalyst. The presence of SO2 reduced the catalyst activity. The realized conversion dramatically decreased to 47% from nearly 100% after 8 h. Characterization of fresh and spent catalysts indicated the deterioration of active component and deposition of NH4HSO4 or (NH4)2SO4 contribute to SO2 poisoning.

Alternating renewal processes have been widely used to model social and scientific phenomenal where independent “on” and “off” states alternate. In this paper, we study a model where the value of a process cumulates and declines according to two modes of compound Poisson processes with respect to an underlying alternating renewal process. The model discussed in the present paper can be used as a revenue management model applied to inventory or to finance. The exact distribution of the process is derived as well as the double Laplace transform with respect to the level and time of the process.

One of the most fundamental results in inventory theory is the optimality of (s, S) policy for inventory systems with setup cost. This result is established under a key assumption of infinite ordering/production capacity. Several studies have shown that, when the ordering/production capacity is finite, the optimal policy for the inventory system with setup cost is very complicated and indeed, only partial characterization for the optimal policy is possible. In this paper, we consider a continuous review production/inventory system with finite capacity and setup cost. The demand follows a Poisson process and a demand that cannot be satisfied upon arrival is backlogged. We show that the optimal control policy has a very simple structure when the holding/shortage cost rate is quasi-convex. We also develop efficient algorithms to compute the optimal control parameters.

In this article we study the joint optimization of finished goods inventory and pricing in a make-to-stock production system with long-run average profit criterion. The production time is random with controllable rate and the demand is Markovian with rate depending on the sale price. The objective is to dynamically adjust the production rate and the sale price to maximize the long-run average profit. We obtain the optimal dynamic pricing and production control policy and present an efficient bisection algorithm for computing the policy parameters.

Polymerized dichlorotetramethyldisiloxane (DCTMDS) films deposited by radio frequency pulsed plasma polymerization (PPP) demonstrated very high dielectric constants for an organic-based system, in the range of 7 to 10. The high dielectric constants of PPP DCTMDS films are due to the high polarizability of the DCTMDS monomer. The pulsed plasma duty cycle (ON/OFF) resulted in higher dielectric constant DCTMDS films for higher duty cycles. The variation of dielectric constants does not show any trend with varying film thicknesses, indicating that the thickness of the deposited films is not significant for controlling permittivity. Post-deposition annealing in a certain temperature range improves the electrical integrity of PPP DCTMDS films, but temperatures that are too high induce even higher leakage than the samples with no heat treatment. An optimal annealing temperature was identified to be in the range of 150 °C to 200 °C. Samples annealed within this temperature window have low leakage current densities below 0.1 pA/νm2 at 10 V for film thicknesses about 100 nm. The PPP DCTMDS films are resistant to typical chemical solvents, and have withstood conventional photolithographic processing with no observable film shrinkage, warping or peeling. Film adhesion was excellent and withstood the scotch tape test.

The photoresponse of polymer field effect transistors (PFETs) based on the 2,5- bis(dibutylaminostyryl)-1,4-phenylene-b-alkyne-b-1,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzene terpolymer (BAS-PPE) is investigated. BAS-PPE is a photoluminescent conducting polymer with a bandgap of 2.25 eV. The BAS-PPE PFETs were fabricated using an open coplanar configuration and light is illuminated onto the top side of the PFETs. A sweep of VDS demonstrates that IDS saturation is suppressed during illumination, which suggests that pinch-off can not be reached since the injection of photo-generated carriers continues unabated. Also, with incident light, the channel can not be turned off, even at high positive gate biases, due to the accumulation of photo- generated carriers. A sweep of VDS also shows that BAS-PPE can act as a p-type polymer and favors hole injection and transport.

Polyallylamine films, deposited on Si wafers by radio frequency (RF) pulsed plasma polymerization (PPP), were employed as insulating layers of metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) capacitors. The insulating polymer films were deposited at substrate temperatures of 25°C and 100°C. Multiple frequency capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements indicated that an in-situ heat treatment during film deposition increased the insulator dielectric constant. The dielectric constant, calculated from the C-V data, rose from 3.03 for samples with no heat treatment to 3.55 for samples with an in-situ heat treatment. For both sample sets, the I-V data demonstrate a low leakage current value (<20fA) up to 100V with an area of 0.0307 mm2, resulting in a current density of <0.65 pA/mm2. Hysteresis in the C-V curves with differing sweep directions was more pronounced for in-situ heat-treated samples indicative of positive mobile ions.
