Reinsurers may default when they have to pay large claims to insurers but are unable to fulfill their obligations due to various reasons such as catastrophic events, underwriting losses, inadequate capitalization, or financial mismanagement. This paper studies the problem of optimal reinsurance design from the perspectives of both the insurer and reinsurer when the insurer faces the potential default risk of the reinsurer. If the insurer aims to minimize the convex distortion risk measure of his retained loss, we prove the optimality of a stop-loss treaty when the promised ceded loss function is charged by the expected value premium principle and the reinsurer offers partial recovery in the event of default. For any fixed premium loading set by the reinsurer, we then derive the explicit expressions of optimal deductible levels for three special distortion functions, including the TVaR, Gini, and PH transform distortion functions. Under these three explicit distortion risk measures adopted by the insurer, we seek the optimal safety loading for the reinsurer by maximizing her net profit where the reserve capital is determined by the TVaR measure and the cost is governed by the expectation. This procedure ultimately leads to the Bowley solution between the insurer and the reinsurer. We provide several numerical examples to illustrate the theoretical findings. Sensitivity analyses demonstrate how different settings of default probability, recovery rate, and safety loading affect the optimal deductible values. Simulation studies are also implemented to analyze the effects induced by the default probability and recovery rate on the Bowley solution.

In the traditional multidimensional credibility models developed by Jewell ((1973) Operations Research Center, pp. 73–77.), the estimation of the hypothetical mean vector involves complex matrix manipulations, which can be challenging to implement in practice. Additionally, the estimation of hyperparameters becomes even more difficult in high-dimensional risk variable scenarios. To address these issues, this paper proposes a new multidimensional credibility model based on the conditional joint distribution function for predicting future premiums. First, we develop an estimator of the joint distribution function of a vector of claims using linear combinations of indicator functions based on past observations. By minimizing the integral of the expected quadratic distance function between the proposed estimator and the true joint distribution function, we obtain the optimal linear Bayesian estimator of the joint distribution function. Using the plug-in method, we obtain an explicit formula for the multidimensional credibility estimator of the hypothetical mean vector. In contrast to the traditional multidimensional credibility approach, our newly proposed estimator does not involve a matrix as the credibility factor, but rather a scalar. This scalar is composed of both population information and sample information, and it still maintains the essential property of increasingness with respect to the sample size. Furthermore, the new estimator based on the joint distribution function can be naturally extended and applied to estimate the process covariance matrix and risk premiums under various premium principles. We further illustrate the performance of the new estimator by comparing it with the traditional multidimensional credibility model using bivariate exponential-gamma and multivariate normal distributions. Finally, we present two real examples to demonstrate the findings of our study.

An intra-band pattern-corrected decoupling vertical conducting wall is realized by dielectric substrate with conductor cladding on both side wall between two tightly spaced H-plane microstrip patches with λ0/20 edge-to-edge spacing. The wall is grounded and two symmetrical slots are etched on the vertical substrate. The measured results agree with the simulations, showing that the slotted vertical wall reduces the mutual coupling within the bandwidth to −30 dB and corrects the radiation beam tilt to be within −4.5° to 3° from the broadside direction. A gain reduction of 0.6 dB is observed compared to the gain without the slotted decoupling wall.

Layer reinsurance treaty is a common form obtained in the problem of optimal reinsurance design. In this paper, we study allocations of policy limits in layer reinsurance treaties with dependent risks. We investigate the effects of orderings and heterogeneity among policy limits on the expected utility functions of the terminal wealth from the viewpoint of risk-averse insurers faced with right tail weakly stochastic arrangement increasing losses. Orderings on optimal allocations are presented for normal layer reinsurance contracts under certain conditions. Parallel studies are also conducted for randomized layer reinsurance contracts. As a special case, the worst allocations of policy limits are also identified when the exact dependence structure among the losses is unknown. Numerical examples are presented to shed light on the theoretical findings.

This paper investigates the ordering properties of largest claim amounts in heterogeneous insurance portfolios in the sense of some transform orders, including the convex transform order and the star order. It is shown that the largest claim amount from a set of independent and heterogeneous exponential claims is more skewed than that from a set of independent and homogeneous exponential claims in the sense of the convex transform order. As a result, a lower bound for the coefficient of variation of the largest claim amount is established without any restrictions on the parameters of the distributions of claim severities. Furthermore, sufficient conditions are presented to compare the skewness of the largest claim amounts from two sets of independent multiple-outlier scaled claims according to the star order. Some comparison results are also developed for the multiple-outlier proportional hazard rates claims. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate these theoretical results.

In this paper we study the allocation problem of relevations in coherent systems. The optimal allocation strategies are obtained by implementing stochastic comparisons of different policies according to the usual stochastic order and the hazard rate order. As special cases of relevations, the load-sharing and minimal repair policies are further investigated. Sufficient (and necessary) conditions are established for various stochastic orderings. Numerical examples are also presented as illustrations.

This paper studies a problem of optimal reinsurance design under asymmetric information. The insurer adopts distortion risk measures to quantify his/her risk position, and the reinsurer does not know the functional form of this distortion risk measure. The risk-neutral reinsurer maximizes his/her net profit subject to individual rationality and incentive compatibility constraints. The optimal reinsurance menu is succinctly derived under the assumption that one type of insurer has a larger willingness to pay than the other type of insurer for every risk. Some comparative analyses are given as illustrations when the insurer adopts the value at risk or the tail value at risk as preferences.

This paper deals with stochastic comparisons of the largest order statistics arising from two sets of independent and heterogeneous gamma samples. It is shown that the weak supermajorization order between the vectors of scale parameters together with the weak submajorization order between the vectors of shape parameters imply the reversed hazard rate ordering between the corresponding maximum order statistics. We also establish sufficient conditions of the usual stochastic ordering in terms of the p-larger order between the vectors of scale parameters and the weak submajorization order between the vectors of shape parameters. Numerical examples and applications in auction theory and reliability engineering are provided to illustrate these results.

This paper discusses stochastic comparisons for the residual and past lifetimes of coherent systems with dependent and identically distributed (d.i.d.) components under random monitoring in terms of the hazard rate, the reversed hazard rate, and the likelihood ratio orders. Some stochastic comparisons results are also established on the residual lifetimes of coherent systems under random observation times when all of the components are alive at that time. Sufficient conditions are established in terms of the aging properties of the components and the distortion functions induced from the system structure and dependence among components lifetimes. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the theoretical results as well.

This paper studies the variability of both series and parallel systems comprised of heterogeneous (and dependent) components. Sufficient conditions are established for the star and dispersive orderings between the lifetimes of parallel [series] systems consisting of dependent components having multiple-outlier proportional hazard rates and Archimedean [Archimedean survival] copulas. We also prove that, without any restriction on the scale parameters, the lifetime of a parallel or series system with independent heterogeneous scaled components is larger than that with independent homogeneous scaled components in the sense of the convex transform order. These results generalize some corresponding ones in the literature to the case of dependent scenarios or general settings of components lifetime distributions.

In the context of insurance, the smallest and largest claim amounts turn out to be crucial to insurance analysis since they provide useful information for determining annual premium. In this paper, we establish sufficient conditions for comparing extreme claim amounts arising from two sets of heterogeneous insurance portfolios according to various stochastic orders. It is firstly shown that the weak supermajorization order between the transformed vectors of occurrence probabilities implies the usual stochastic ordering between the largest claim amounts when the claim severities are weakly stochastic arrangement increasing. Secondly, sufficient conditions are established for the right-spread ordering and the convex transform ordering of the smallest claim amounts arising from heterogeneous dependent insurance portfolios with possibly different number of claims. In the setting of independent multiple-outlier claims, we study the effects of heterogeneity among sample sizes on the stochastic properties of the largest and smallest claim amounts in the sense of the hazard rate ordering and the likelihood ratio ordering. Numerical examples are provided to highlight these theoretical results as well. Not only can our results be applied in the area of actuarial science, but also they can be used in other research fields including reliability engineering and auction theory.

For many practical situations in reliability engineering, components in the system are usually dependent since they generally work in a collaborative environment. In this paper we build sufficient conditions for comparing two coherent systems under different random environments in the sense of the usual stochastic, hazard rate, reversed hazard rate, and likelihood ratio orders. Applications and numerical examples are provided to illustrate all the theoretical results established here.

It is a common belief for actuaries that the heterogeneity of claim severities in a given insurance portfolio tends to increase its dangerousness, which results in requiring more capital for covering claims. This paper aims to investigate the effects of orderings and heterogeneity among scale parameters on the aggregate claim amount when both claim occurrence probabilities and claim severities are dependent. Under the assumption that the claim occurrence probabilities are left tail weakly stochastic arrangement increasing, the actuaries' belief is examined from two directions, i.e., claim severities are comonotonic or right tail weakly stochastic arrangement increasing. Numerical examples are provided to validate these theoretical findings. An application in assets allocation is addressed as well.

In this paper, we discuss the ordering properties of sample ranges arising from multiple-outlier exponential and proportional hazard rate (PHR) models. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, sufficient conditions on the parameter vectors are provided for the reversed hazard rate order and the usual stochastic order between the sample ranges arising from multiple-outlier exponential models with common sample size. Next, stochastic comparisons are separately carried out for sample ranges arising from multiple-outlier exponential and PHR models with different sample sizes as well as different hazard rates. Some numerical examples are also presented to illustrate the results established here.

In the reliability context, the geometric distribution is a natural choice to model the lifetimes of some equipment and components when they are measured by the number of completed cycles of operation or strokes, or in case of periodic monitoring of continuous data. This paper aims at investigating how the heterogeneity among the parameters affects some characteristics such as the distribution and hazard rate functions of spacings arising from independent heterogeneous geometric random variables. First, refined representations of the distribution functions are provided for both the second spacing and sample range from heterogeneous geometric sample. Second, stochastic comparisons are carried out on the second spacings and sample ranges for two sets of independent and heterogeneous geometric random variables in the sense of the usual stochastic and hazard rate orderings. The results established here not only fill the gap on the study of stochastic properties of spacings from heterogeneous geometric samples, but also are expected to be applied in the fields of statistics and reliability.

Let Xi:n(p, q) be the ith smallest order statistics from this sample. Denote by $X_{i,n}^{s}(p,q)\doteq [X_{i:n}(p,q)|X_{i-1:n}(p,q)=s]$. Under the assumptions that xf′(x)/f(x) is decreasing in x∈ℛ+, λ1≤λ2 and s1≤s2, it is shown that $X_{i:n}^{s_{1}}(p+k,q-k)$ is larger than $X_{i:n}^{s_{2}}(p,q)$ according to the likelihood ratio order for any 2≤i≤n and k=1, 2, …, q. Some parametric families of distributions are also provided to illustrate the theoretical results.

In this paper, we carry out stochastic comparisons of the largest order statistics arising from multiple-outlier gamma models with different both shape and scale parameters in the sense of various stochastic orderings including the likelihood ratio order, star order and dispersive order. It is proved, among others, that the weak majorization order between the scale parameter vectors along with the majorization order between the shape parameter vectors imply the likelihood ratio order between the largest order statistics. A quite general sufficient condition for the star order is presented. The new results established here strengthen and generalize some of the results known in the literature. Numerical examples and applications are also provided to explicate the theoretical results.

Modern diffraction and scattering methods of X-ray radiation allow for multi-scale probing of the material morphology for both polymer-based composite films and fibers. These approaches and analyses tools can be used to map the makeup of individual grain structures in various polymer nano-composites in order to examine the effects of the fillers on nano-scale structural changes in the materials. The electron intensity correlation function, derived from Fourier transformations of the X-ray scattering pattern provides a path to analyze acquired data for space resolved domains. Here in this study, polymer-based nano-carbon composite systems are analyzed. The polymers used include polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene, and polyacrilonitrile as matrix materials. The nano-carbon filler contribution to the grain size evolution is tracked by X-ray scattering/diffraction characterization. These results show that the relevant sizes of crystalline and amorphous domains within the lamellae structures correspond to the dispersion/distribution of the nano-filler in the composite materials. This work mainly illustrates an effective use of the correlation function to provide global morphological analysis in the composite system.
