We sought to assess the degree to which environmental risk factors affect CHD prevalence using a case–control study.
Methods:
A hospital-based study was conducted by collecting data from outpatients between January 2016 and January 2021, which included 31 CHD cases and 72 controls from eastern China. Risk ratios were estimated using univariate and multivariate logistic regression models and mediating effect analysis.
Results:
Residential characteristics (usage of cement flooring, odds ratio = 17.04[1.954–148.574], P = 0.01; musty smell, odds ratio = 3.105[1.198–8.051], P = 0.02) and indoor total volatile organic compound levels of participants’ room (odds ratio = 31.846[8.187–123.872, P < 0.001), benzene level (odds ratio = 7.370[2.289–23.726], P = 0.001) increased the risk of CHDs in offspring. And folic acid plays a masking effect, which mitigates the affection of the total volatile organic compound (indirect effect = -0.072[−0.138,-0.033]) and formaldehyde (indirect effect = −0.109[-0.381,-0.006]) levels on the incidence of CHDs. While food intake including milk (odds ratio = 0.396[0.16–0.977], P = 0.044), sea fish (odds ratio = 0.273[0.086–0.867], P = 0.028), and wheat (odds ratio = 0.390[0.154–0.990], P = 0.048) were all protective factors for the occurrence of CHDs. Factors including women reproductive history (history of conception control, odds ratio = 2.648[1.062–6.603], P = 0.037; history of threatened abortion, odds ratio = 2.632[1.005–6.894], P = 0.049; history of dysmenorrhoea (odds ratio = 2.720[1.075–6.878], P = 0.035); sleep status (napping habit during daytime, odds ratio = 0.856[0.355–2.063], P = 0.047; poor sleep quality, odds ratio = 3.180[1.037–9.754], P = 0.043); and work status (working time > 40h weekly, odds ratio = 2.882[1.172–7.086], P = 0.021) also influenced the CHDs incidence to differing degrees.
Conclusion:
Diet habits, nutrients intake, psychological status of pregnant women, and residential air quality were associated with fetal CHDs. Indoor total volatile organic compound content was significantly correlated with CHDs risk, and folic acid may serve as a masking factor that reduce the harmful effects of air pollutants.
Nutraceuticals have been taken as an alternative and add-on treatment for depressive disorders. Direct comparisons between different nutraceuticals and between nutraceuticals and placebo or antidepressants are limited. Thus, it is unclear which nutraceuticals are the most efficacious.
Methods
We conducted a network meta-analysis to estimate the comparative efficacy and tolerability of nutraceuticals for the treatment of depressive disorder in adults. The primary outcome was the change in depressive symptoms, as measured by the standard mean difference (SMD). Secondary outcomes included response rate, remission rate, and anxiety. Tolerability was defined as all-cause discontinuation and adverse events. Frequentist random-effect NMA was conducted.
Results
Hundred and ninety-two trials involving 17,437 patients and 44 nutraceuticals were eligible for inclusion. Adjunctive nutraceuticals consistently showed better efficacy than antidepressants (ADT) alone in outcomes including SMD, remission, and response. Notable combinations were Eicosapentaenoic acid + Docosahexaenoic Acid plus ADT (EPA + DHA + ADT) (SMD 1.04, 95% confidence interval 0.64–1.44), S-Adenosyl Methionine (SAMe) + ADT (0.99, 0.31–1.68), curcumin + ADT (1.03, 0.55–1.51), Zinc + ADT (1.59, 0.63–2.55), tryptophan + ADT (1.24, 0.32–2.16), and folate + ADT (0.64, 0.17–1.10). Additionally, four nutraceutical monotherapies demonstrated superior efficacy compared to ADT: EPA + DHA (0.6, 0.32–0.88), SAMe (0.52, 0.18–0.87), curcumin (0.62, −0.17 to 1.40) and saffron (0.69, 0.34–1.04). It is noted that EPA + DHA, SAMe, and curcumin showed strong performance as either monotherapies or adjuncts to ADT. Most nutraceuticals showed comparable tolerability to placebo.
Conclusions
This extensive systematic review and NMA of nutraceuticals for treating depressive disorders indicated a number of nutraceuticals that could offer benefits, either as adjuncts or monotherapies.
This paper presents a millimeter-wave end-fire dual-polarized (DP) array antenna with symmetrical radiation patterns and high isolation. The DP radiation element is formed by integrating a quasi-Yagi antenna (providing horizontal polarization) into a pyramidal horn antenna (providing vertical polarization), resulting in a DP radiation element with a symmetrical radiation aperture. To efficiently feed the DP element while maintaining high isolation, a mode-composite full-corporate-feed network is employed, comprising substrate-integrated waveguide supporting the TE10 mode and substrate-integrated coaxial line supporting the TEM mode. This design eliminates the need for additional transition structures, achieving excellent mode isolation and a reduced substrate layer number. A 1 × 4-element DP array prototype operating at 26.5–29.5 GHz using low temperature co-fired ceramic technology was designed, fabricated, and measured. The test results indicate that the prototype achieves an average gain exceeding 10 dBi for both polarizations within the operating band. Thanks to the symmetrical DP radiation element and mode-composite full-corporate-feed network, symmetrical radiation patterns for both polarizations are observed in both the horizontal and vertical planes, along with a high cross-polarization discrimination of 22 dB and polarization port isolation of 35 dB.
Malaria still poses significant risks, especially in India. In addition to averting behaviors, forests may help reduce mosquitoes in rural areas and, thus, the malaria incidence and mortality. However, the evidence is still scarce about the magnitude and value of this ecosystem service. To address this gap, we use a panel dataset for 2013–2015 and evaluate the impact of forest loss on malaria morbidity in India's rural areas. We find that, on average, the loss of 1 km2 of forest resulted in 0.16 additional deaths per 100,000 people. This translates into marginal values of forests for reducing malaria mortality of, at least, $1.26–85.9/ha/year in 2015 US$. Our results suggest that combining forest conservation and traditional anti-malaria policies like indoor spraying and insecticide-treated nets may be an effectual way to mitigate the malarial burden in India and elsewhere and offer insights about the value of potential payments for ecosystem services.
Dolichousnea longissima is famous as the world’s longest lichen, which typically reproduces asexually. Factors impacting its length and reproductive strategies are of theoretical interest and important for conservation. We discovered a Dolichousnea population with apotheciate thalli in Western China. Phylogenetic analyses using ITS sequence data confirmed specimens were D. longissima. Multiple phylogenetic branches included both apotheciate and non-apotheciate thalli, thus genetic differences within the ITS region were not related to apothecia production. There was no indication that apotheciate Dolichousnea specimens from this region belong to a separate, morphologically and genetically distinct population. In a field experiment, we transplanted non-apotheciate thallus strands of 10, 20, 40 or 80 cm length from higher to lower elevations: c. 4000 to 3400 m. Elevational gradients in temperature, relative humidity and vapour pressure deficit simulated future climatic change. We tested hypotheses regarding the impact of climatic stressors on D. longissima growth and reproduction. After three years of growth, thallus mortality was highest at the lowest sites. Of surviving thalli, 23% had fragmented, with fragmentation rates increasing with length. Other thalli thrived, reaching a maximum main stem length of 321 cm, with a maximum total length of 764 cm. Intact thalli showed negative length-dependent growth. Lower elevations were associated with initiation of sexual reproduction, reduced relative thallus length growth rates (RTLGR) and lower photobiont abundance, with apparent shifts of photobionts from the main stem to fibrils and reallocation of resources from length to central cord and fibril mass. Probability of switching to sexual reproduction increased with thallus length, but shorter thalli made greater relative investment in apothecia production. Detrimental impacts of climate change could reduce D. longissima range and biomass production, thereby also decreasing food availability for the endangered lichenivorous monkey, Rhinopithecus bieti. Conservation efforts should be prioritized at sites currently hosting abundant, fast-growing thalli, and high-elevation mature forests where D. longissima is most likely to persist under future climatic change. Apotheciate populations need protection because sexual reproduction theoretically generates genetic variability, increasing the likelihood of generating mycobiont genotypes adapted to altered climatic conditions.
Caring for children with solid tumors (STs) can impact caregiver’s physical and mental health. Caregiver mastery, which influences psychological well-being, is vital in improving outcomes for both caregivers and children. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between caregiver mastery, anxiety, depression, fear of disease progression (FoP), caregiver burden, and the quality of life (QOL) of children with ST.
Methods
This cross-sectional study was conducted from June 2022 to April 2023 at a Grade A tertiary hospital in Shandong. Family caregivers of children with ST completed several validated measures, including the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) 3.0 Cancer Module, the Fear of Progression Questionnaire-parent version (FoP-Q-SF/PR), the Zarit Burden Interview Scale (ZBI), the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), and the Caregiver Mastery Scale. Multiple linear regression analyses assessed the relationships between FoP, caregiver burden, anxiety, depression, caregiver mastery, and children’s QOL. Results were expressed as β and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
Results
A total of 454 caregivers participated. Caregiver mastery was positively correlated with children’s QOL (β = 0.80, 95% CI: 0.20 to 1.39). Depression (β = −0.64, 95% CI: −0.83 to −0.45), anxiety (β = −0.67, 95% CI: −0.85 to −0.49), caregiver burden (β = −1.20, 95% CI: −1.60 to −0.80), and FoP (β = −0.04, 95% CI: −0.05 to −0.03) were negatively related to children’s QOL. Caregiver mastery moderated the associations between depression, caregiver burden, FoP, and children’s QOL, while also improving the effect of mild anxiety on QOL.
Significance of results
The study underscores the importance of fostering caregiver mastery to mitigate the negative impact of caregiver distress on children’s QOL and improve outcomes for both caregivers and children with solid tumors.
Conclusion
Caregiver mastery moderates the effects of anxiety, depression, FoP, and caregiver burdenon children’s QOL. Supporting caregiver mastery can alleviate caregiver burden and enhance both caregiver and child well-being.
In this study, a new item response theory model is developed to account for situations in which respondents overreport or underreport their actual opinions on a positive or negativeissue. Such behavior is supposed to be a result of deception and transfer mechanisms. In the proposed model, this behavior is simulated by incorporating a deception term into a multidimensional rating scale model, followed by multiplication by a transfer term, with the two operations performed by an indicator function and a transition matrix separately. The proposed model is presented in a Bayesian framework approximated by Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms. Through a series of simulations, the parameters of the proposed model are recovered accurately. The methodology is also implemented within an online experimental study to demonstrate the methodology’s application.
The aim of this 4-year follow-up study was to examine the predictive effects of demographics, three types of sexual stigma, three types of self-identity confusion, anxiety, depression, family support and problematic Internet use before the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on new-onset suicide risk and persistent suicide risk in young adult lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals who experienced the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan.
Methods
Baseline data were collected from 1,000 lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals in 2018 and 2019. Outcome data on suicide risk were collected again in 2023. The suicide module of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview was used to assess suicide risk in terms of thoughts of death, desire to self-harm, thoughts of suicide, plans for suicide and suicide attempts in the preceding month at the initial and follow-up assessments. Baseline three types of sexual stigma, self-identity disturbance, depression, anxiety and problematic Internet use were used to examine their prediction of new-onset suicide risk and persistent suicide risk at follow-up.
Results
In total, 673 individuals participated in the follow-up survey. Notably, 16.5% of the participants who had no suicide risk at baseline had new-onset suicide risk at follow-up; 46.4% of the participants who had suicide risk at baseline also had suicide risk at follow-up. Participants who were transgender (p = .003), who perceived greater levels of microaggression (p < .001), and who had greater levels of problematic Internet use at baseline (p = .024) were more likely to have new-onset suicide risk at follow-up. Participants who had greater levels of self-identity confusion were more likely to have persistent suicide risk at follow-up (p = .023).
Conclusion
Intervention strategies for reducing suicide risk in lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals should be developed with consideration of the predictors identified in this study.
Research on schizophrenia and life expectancy has mainly focused on premature mortality.
Aims
This study investigates factors associated with longevity in patients with schizophrenia receiving long-term care and identifies shared traits among these individuals.
Method
A retrospective cross-sectional study analysing the clinical records of 138 patients with schizophrenia who died between 2015 and 2017 in a psychiatric long-term care facility was conducted. Longevity was defined by life tables drawn from the national health database. Variables were compared between longevity and control groups to determine predictors of longer lifespans. Cluster analysis was employed to identify shared traits among individuals with longevity. Causes of death by age were compared.
Results
In the long-term care setting, of the 138 participants, 45 were in the longevity group. This group had more males, lower antipsychotic doses, but more mobility issues. Significant predictors of longevity included older age at onset, longer length of stay, lower activities of daily living scores and a hypertension diagnosis. Cluster analysis revealed two patterns, suggesting that poorer health indicators did not necessarily lead to shorter lives. Fatalities caused by pneumonia were associated with a higher age, compared to those from cancer and choking.
Conclusions
Addressing modifiable risk factors enhances life expectancy in patients with schizophrenia, especially for males, while the age at onset may play a significant role. An integrated long-term care model with close monitoring and timely provision of mental and general healthcare may help extend lifespans. Further research is needed to balance long-term residential care and community-based care for elderly patients with schizophrenia.
China is still among the 30 high-burden tuberculosis (TB) countries in the world. Few studies have described the spatial epidemiological characteristics of pulmonary TB (PTB) in Jiangsu Province. The registered incidence data of PTB patients in 95 counties of Jiangsu Province from 2011 to 2021 were collected from the Tuberculosis Management Information System. Three-dimensional spatial trends, spatial autocorrelation, and spatial–temporal scan analysis were conducted to explore the spatial clustering pattern of PTB. From 2011 to 2021, a total of 347,495 newly diagnosed PTB cases were registered. The registered incidence rate of PTB decreased from 49.78/100,000 in 2011 to 26.49/100,000 in 2021, exhibiting a steady downward trend (χ2 = 414.22, P < 0.001). The average annual registered incidence rate of PTB was higher in the central and northern regions. Moran’s I indices of the registered incidence of PTB were all >0 (P< 0.05) except in 2016, indicating a positive spatial correlation overall. Local autocorrelation analysis showed that ‘high–high’ clusters were mainly distributed in northern Jiangsu, and ‘low–low’ clusters were mainly concentrated in southern Jiangsu. The results of this study assist in identifying settings and locations of high TB risk and inform policy-making for PTB control and prevention.
Depression is a significant mental health concern affecting the overall well-being of adolescents and young adults. Recently, the prevalence of depression has increased among young people. Nonetheless, there is little research delving into the longitudinal epidemiology of adolescent depression over time.
Aims
To investigate the longitudinal epidemiology of depression among adolescents and young adults aged 10–24 years.
Method
Our research focused on young people (aged 10–24 years) with depression, using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019. We explored the age-standardised prevalence, incidence and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of depression in different groups, including various regions, ages, genders and sociodemographic indices, from 1990 to 2019.
Results
The prevalence, incidence and DALYs of depression in young people increased globally between 1990 and 2019. Regionally, higher-income regions like High-Income North America and Australasia recorded rising age-standardised prevalence and incidence rates, whereas low- or middle-income regions mostly saw reductions. Nationally, countries such as Greenland, the USA and Palestine reported the highest age-standardised prevalence and incidence rates in 2019, whereas Qatar witnessed the largest growth over time. The burden disproportionately affected females across age groups and world regions. The most prominent age effect on incidence and prevalence rates was in those aged 20–24 years. The depression burden showed an unfavourable trend in younger cohorts born after 1980, with females reporting a higher cohort risk than males.
Conclusions
Between 1990 and 2019, the general pattern of depression among adolescents varied according to age, gender, time period and generational cohort, across regions and nations.
The impact of a liquid droplet with another droplet or onto a solid surface are important basic processes that occur in many applications such as agricultural sprays and inkjet printing, and in nature such as pathogens transport by raindrops. We investigated the head-on collision of unequal-size droplets of the same liquid on wetting surfaces using the direct numerical simulations technique at different size ratios. The unsteady Navier–Stokes equations are solved and the liquid–gas interface is tracked using the geometric volume-of-fluid method. The numerical model is validated by comparing simulation results of two extreme cases of droplets bouncing with the experimental data from previous studies and the agreement is quite accurate. The validated model is employed to simulate droplets bouncing at several size ratios at different Weber numbers and Ohnesorge number. Two distinct regimes are identified, namely, the inertial regime, where the restitution coefficient is a constant value close to 0.3, the viscous regime, where the restitution coefficient declines. To understand the bouncing behaviour, the velocity field is analysed and an energy budget calculation is performed. The distribution of the sessile droplet energy is found to be important and the sessile droplet surface energy is calculated by its deformation characteristics such as crater depth. Finally, a scaling analysis is performed to rationalize the insensitivity of the coefficient of restitution in the inertial regime, and its decline in the viscous regime, at large size ratios.
Conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) holds that most conceptual metaphors are processed unconsciously. However, whether multiple words can be integrated into a holistic metaphoric sentence without consciousness remains controversial in cognitive science and psychology. This study aims to investigate the role of consciousness in processing Chinese nominal metaphoric sentences ‘A是B’ (A is[like] B) with a psychophysical experimental paradigm referred to as breaking continuous flash suppression (b-CFS). We manipulated sentence types (metaphoric, literal and anomalous) and word forms (upright, inverted) in a two-staged experiment (CFS and non-CFS). No difference was found in the breakthrough times among all three types of sentences in the CFS stage, while literal sentences were detected more slowly than either metaphoric or anomalous sentences in the non-CFS stage. The results suggest that the integration of multiple words may not succeed without the participation of consciousness, let alone metaphoric processing. These findings may redefine ‘unconscious’ in CMT as ‘preconscious’ and support the indirect access view regarding how the metaphoric meaning is processed in the brain.
As an environmental factor, temperature impacts the distribution of species and influences interspecific competition. The molecular chaperones encoded by small heat shock proteins (sHsps) are essential for rapid, appropriate responses to environmental stress. This study focuses on Hsp20.8, which encodes a temperature-responsive sHsp in Liriomyza trifolii, an insect pest that infests both agricultural and ornamental crops. Hsp20.8 expression was highest at 39℃ in L. trifolii pupae and adults, and expression levels were greater in pupae than in adults. Recombinant Hsp20.8 was expressed in Escherichia coli and conferred a higher survival rate than the empty vector to bacterial cells exposed to heat stress. RNA interference experiments were conducted using L. trifolii adults and prepupae and the knockdown of Hsp20.8 expression increased mortality in L. trifolii during heat stress. The results expand our understanding of sHsp function in Liriomyza spp. and the ongoing adaptation of this pest to climate change. In addition, this study is also important for predicting the distribution of invasive species and proposing new prevention and control strategies based on temperature adaptation.
The efficacy of probiotics as a therapeutic alternative for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remain unclear.
Aims
To investigate the effectiveness of probiotics for symptoms of ADHD and identify possible factors affecting their efficacy.
Method
Randomised placebo-controlled trials were identified through searching major databases from inception to April 2023, using the main keywords ‘probiotics’ and ‘ADHD’ without limitation on languages or geographic locations. The outcome of interest included improvement in total symptoms of ADHD, symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, and drop-out rate. Continuous and categorical data were expressed as effect sizes based on standardised mean differences (SMDs) and odds ratios, respectively, with 95% confidence intervals.
Results
Meta-analysis of seven trials involving 379 participants (mean age 10.37 years, range 4–18 years) showed no significant improvement in total symptoms of ADHD (SMD = 0.25; P = 0.12), symptoms of inattention (SMD = 0.14; P = 0.3) or hyperactivity/impulsivity (SMD = 0.08; P = 0.54) between the probiotic and placebo groups. Despite non-significance on subgroup analyses, there was a large difference in effect size between studies using probiotics as an adjunct to methylphenidate and those using probiotics as supplementation (SMD = 0.84 v. 0.07; P = 0.16), and a moderate difference in effect size between studies using multiple strains of probiotics and those using single-strain regimens (SMD = 0.45 v. 0.03; P = 0.19).
Conclusions
Current evidence shows no significant difference in therapeutic efficacy between probiotics and placebos for treatment of ADHD symptoms. However, albeit statistically non-significant, higher therapeutic efficacies associated with multiple-strain probiotics or combining probiotics with methylphenidate may provide direction for further research.
Aphis spiraecola Patch is one of the most economically important tree fruit pests worldwide. The pyrethroid insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin is commonly used to control A. spiraecola. In this 2-year study, we quantified the resistance level of A. spiraecola to lambda-cyhalothrin in different regions of the Shaanxi province, China. The results showed that A. spiraecola had reached extremely high resistance levels with a 174-fold resistance ratio (RR) found in the Xunyi region. In addition, we compared the enzymatic activity and expression level of P450 genes among eight A. spiraecola populations. The P450 activity of A. spiraecola was significantly increased in five regions (Xunyi, Liquan, Fengxiang, Luochuan, and Xinping) compared to susceptible strain (SS). The expression levels of CYP6CY7, CYP6CY14, CYP6CY22, P4504C1-like, P4506a13, CYP4CZ1, CYP380C47, and CYP4CJ2 genes were significantly increased under lambda-cyhalothrin treatment and in the resistant field populations. A L1014F mutation in the sodium channel gene was found and the mutation rate was positively correlated with the LC50 of lambda-cyhalothrin. In conclusion, the levels of lambda-cyhalothrin resistance of A. spiraecola field populations were associated with P450s and L1014F mutations. Our combined findings provide evidence on the resistance mechanism of A. spiraecola to lambda-cyhalothrin and give a theoretical basis for rational and effective control of this pest species.
The impacts of long-term warming on soil physical structure and soil organic carbon (SOC) pools are currently disputed and uncertain. We conducted an eleven-year warming experiment in wheatland field in Henan, China. We found that long-term warming significantly increased soil bulk density by 4.5%, and significantly decreased total porosity and non-capillary porosity by 3.4% and 5.0%, respectively. Besides, long-term warming decreased the >2 mm fraction proportion and increased <0.053 mm fraction proportion of dry and wet aggregates. The mean weight diameter value for dry and wet aggregates in long-term warming treatment was significantly decreased by 7.0% and 6.7%, respectively. Moreover, long-term warming significantly decreased the total SOC, very labile pool (F1) and labile pool (F2) content by 10.6%, 30.6%, and 43.6%, and significantly increased the less labile pool (F3) and non-labile pool (F4) content by 94.2% and 21.1%, respectively. Long-term warming increased the passive carbon pool percentage but decreased the active carbon pool (ACP) percentage. Our results suggest that long-term warming negatively affected the soil's physical structure and impaired soil ACP accumulation. The findings of this study help improve our understanding of the response of farmland soils in northern China to climate change and provide scientific basis for establishing carbon management measures in farmland.
Energy loss of protons with 90 and 100 keV energies penetrating through a hydrogen plasma target has been measured, where the electron density of the plasma is about 1016 cm−3 and the electron temperature is about 1-2 eV. It is found that the energy loss of protons in the plasma is obviously larger than that in cold gas and the experimental results based on the Bethe model calculations can be demonstrated by the variation of effective charge of protons in the hydrogen plasma. The effective charge remains 1 for 100 keV protons, while the value for 90 keV protons decreases to be about 0.92. Moreover, two empirical formulae are employed to extract the effective charge.
Presurgical psychological screening (PPS) is a procedure for mitigating possible unfavorable outcomes after spinal surgery. Although the effectiveness of PPS on degenerative spinal diseases has been investigated in Western studies, a potential cultural influence on PPS is still unknown. This study thus aims to explore the experiences of Taiwanese people before spinal surgery and tries to establish culture-specific components of PPS in Taiwan.
Participants and Methods:
A total of five participants aged from 44–69 with degenerative spinal diseases were eligible in this study. All participants visited a neurosurgical outpatient clinic for potential surgical treatment, and each participant underwent an one-hour semi-structured interview before surgery. The demographical information, medical history, psychological status (e.g., personality traits and emotional disturbances) and considerations to make a surgical decision, were recorded and further analyzed following the rule of grounded theory.
Results:
Four major components with 21 sub-components were reported when deciding to receive a surgical treatment for their spinal diseases, including disease-related considerations, medical information, self-concept and interpersonal relations. In terms of disease-related aspects, patients concerned about etiology, symptomatology, impacts, coping strategies and rehabilitation methods. As for medical information, patients paid more attention on medical compliance, the relationship with medical system, attitude for treatment, expectation to surgical outcomes, medical decisions and medical information. As for the self-concept, patients considered more on the impacts of disease on self-concept, strategies of emotional regulations and personality traits. In terms of interpersonal relations, patients reported more on the supportive resources, patterns of interpersonal activities and impacts of interpersonal relations on medical decisions. Additionally, other specific factors, such as past negative experiences (e.g., chronic insomnia, experiences of psychological counseling), litigation, physical punishment in childhood and social roles, were also reported.
Conclusions:
Like previous findings, our results supported that the interpersonal relations and doctor-patient relationship in PPS were important considerations before surgery, while we further evidenced that influences of family members on medical decision is determinant and unique in this culture.
Bipolar depression is a mental illness accompanied by manic episodes and depression, and the course of the illness is cyclic and repetitive. The pathogenesis is related to genetic factors, neurotransmitters, neuroendocrine, biorhythms and some psychosocial factors. In order to explore more intervention methods of bipolar depression, this study introduced educational psychology into rail transit teaching in higher vocational colleges to explore the mechanism and effect of this method on students with bipolar depression.
Subjects and Methods
64 students with bipolar depression in a higher vocational college were randomly divided into experimental group and control group. The experimental group received the teaching course education of educational psychology reform. The scores of Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Acceptance and Behavior Questionnaire Second edition (AAQ-II), and Social Dysfunction Screening Scale (SDSS) were compared before treatment, 2 weeks after treatment, 4 weeks after treatment, and 8 weeks after treatment.
Results
The scores of Yang’s Mania Scale, self-rating Depression Scale, the second edition of Acceptance and Behavior Questionnaire and Social Dysfunction Screening Scale were lower than those before the experiment (P<0.05), and the difference was statistically significant.
Conclusions
The curriculum education of educational psychology reform has a positive effect on patients with bipolar depression. The patients’ emotional stability is improved, depressive symptoms are alleviated, suicidal thoughts are gradually weakened, mania symptoms are alleviated and physical symptoms are gradually recovered.
