Numerous supraglacial lakes form on the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) during the summer, and accurately estimating their depth is crucial for understanding GrIS water storage. In this study, we estimate the depth of 35 representative GrIS supraglacial lakes using ICESat-2, Sentinel-2 imagery and ArcticDEM data. ICESat-2-derived lake depth is used to validate the performance of three remote sensing methods, namely empirical formula method (EFM), radiative transfer method (RTM) and depression topography method (DTM). EFM relies on ICESat-2-derived lake depth to construct empirical formulas, while RTM and DTM do not. The results show that (1) the green band EFM performs best; the DTM performs secondarily but tends to consistently underestimate depths; the green-band RTM has lower accuracy and overestimates depths, while the red-band RTM also has lower accuracy but underestimates depths. (2) Temporal changes of depression topography have limited impacts on the performance of DTM, whereas the uncertainties caused by lake shoreline height estimates should be considered. (3) The performance of RTM is significantly influenced by the spectral attenuation coefficient. We further identify the factors that affect spatiotemporal extrapolation of these methods and recommend prioritizing the use of the EFM when near-simultaneous ICESat-2 data are available; otherwise, DTM is recommended, yet an underestimation ratio should be used.
Care of the dying is an essential part of holistic cancer nursing. Improving nurses’ attitudes and behaviors regarding care of the dying is one of the critical factors in increasing the quality of nursing service. This study aims to examine the impact of an educational program based on the CARES tool on nurses’ attitudes and behaviors toward care of the dying.
Methods
A quasi-experimental study with pre- and post-intervention measures was conducted. A total of 222 oncology nurses from 14 hospitals in Beijing, China, were enrolled using a convenient sampling method. This online educational course developed based on the CARES framework comprised 7 modules and 10 sessions. Each session was carried out twice a week over 30–60 min. Data were collected using a sociodemographic characteristics questionnaire, the Frommelt Attitude Towards Care of the Dying Scale (FATCOD) and the Nurses’ Practice Behavior Toward Care of the Dying Questionnaire (NPBTCOD). Reassessment of attitudes and behaviors was conducted when completed the learning and 6 months after the learning, respectively. The sociodemographic characteristics of the nurses were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and differences in attitudes and behaviors were reported and compared by the paired t-test.
Results
All the 222 oncology nurses completed educational courses, and 218 nurses (98.20%) completed the pre- and post-attitudes evaluation and 213 (95.9%) nurses completed the pre- and post-behaviors evaluation. The mean (SD) FATCOD score before and after the educational program was 108.83 (12.07) versus 115.09 (14.91), respectively (t = −8.546, p ≥ 0.001). The mean (SD) NPBTCOD score before and after the educational program was 69.14 (17.56) versus 73.40 (18.96), respectively (t = −3.231, p = 0.001).
Significance of results
This educational intervention was found to be an effective method for improving oncology nurses’ attitudes and behaviors toward caring for dying patients.
In this paper, the notion of locally algebraic intersection structure is introduced for algebraic L-domains. Essentially, every locally algebraic intersection structure is a family of sets, which forms an algebraic L-domain ordered by inclusion. It is shown that there is a locally algebraic intersection structure which is order-isomorphic to a given algebraic L-domain. This result extends the classic Stone’s representation theorem for Boolean algebras to the case of algebraic L-domains. In addition, it can be seen that many well-known representations of algebraic L-domains, such as logical algebras, information systems, closure spaces, and formal concept analysis, can be analyzed in the framework of locally algebraic intersection structures. Then, a set-theoretic uniformity across different representations of algebraic L-domains is established.
In Taiwan, people with hip osteoarthritis (OA) receive a total hip arthroplasty (THA). They can apply for National Health Insurance (NHI) coverage for metal-on-polyethylene (MoP) implant or USD1,313.2 co-pay for new bearing surface materials. This study aimed to report the number of first primary THAs, and calculate the costs of THA by different choices of prothesis implant.
Methods
A retrospective cohort study of patients aged 50 years or older who had OA (as an indication for THA) from 1 January 2010 through to 31 December 2018 was established from Taiwan’s NHI Claims Data. The cohort was followed-up until 31 December 2019. THA Implant combinations were defined by bearing surface materials e.g., “ceramic-metal” into alumina or composites made from alumina and zirconia, including metal-on-polyethylene (MOP), ceramic-metal composite ceramic-on-polyethylene (c-COP), alumina ceramic-on-ceramic (a-COC), ceramic-metal composite ceramic-on-ceramic (c-COC). Since only MOP was covered by the NHI, patients who chose the COP or COC implant had to pay for additional costs. We used hospital costs comparison data to calculate the average out-of-pocket (OOP) costs for different implant combinations.
Results
This study comprised 23,560 patients with first primary THA over 9 years. The number of patients of first primary THA increased from 1,802 in 2010 to 3,251 in 2018. The mean age of patients at baseline was 68 years, and the majority were women (70.6%). The share of users for each THA implant type were: MOP implant (49.2%), c-COC implant, (20.8%), a-COC implant, (6.5%), and c-COP implant, 5.9%. The average OOP costs of each implant were: USD3,578.60 for c-COC (SD=381.80), USD2,073.00 for a-COC (SD=279.80), and USD2,082.1 for c-COP (SD=334.1).
Conclusions
Although only MOP was fully covered by NHI, only about 50% of the OA patients chose this type of implant, and 26.7 percent chose alumina and zirconia ceramic composite despite this being a much higher OOP cost. Whether choosing more expensive implants would be cost-effective for THA in Taiwan’s healthcare system requires further analysis.
Integrins are transmembrane heterodimeric (αβ) receptors that transduce mechanical signals between the extracellular milieu and the cell in a bidirectional manner. Extensive research has shown that the integrin beta (β) family is widely expressed in the brain and that they control various aspects of brain development and function. Schizophrenia is a relatively common neurological disorder of unknown etiology and has been found to be closely related to neurodevelopment and neurochemicals in neuropathological studies of schizophrenia. Here, we review literature from recent years that shows that schizophrenia involves multiple signaling pathways related to neuronal migration, axon guidance, cell adhesion, and actin cytoskeleton dynamics, and that dysregulation of these processes affects the normal function of neurons and synapses. In fact, alterations in integrin β structure, expression and signaling for neural circuits, cortex, and synapses are likely to be associated with schizophrenia. We explored several aspects of the possible association between integrin β and schizophrenia in an attempt to demonstrate the role of integrin β in schizophrenia, which may help to provide new insights into the study of the pathogenesis and treatment of schizophrenia.
While the detrimental effect of interparental conflict on adolescent depression is well-established, the underlying mechanisms linking the two continue to be inadequately understood. This study investigated the mediating role of family functioning and the moderating role of cultural beliefs about adversity in the association between interparental conflict and adolescent depression. The samples included 651 Chinese adolescents (mean age at Time 1 = 13.27 years; 56.5% girls) from a two-wave longitudinal study with data spanning 1 year. The findings from path modeling analyses provided evidence for the mediating role of family functioning; these findings indicated that interparental conflict can damage family functioning, which in turn exacerbates the risk of adolescent depression. The moderating role of cultural beliefs about adversity was also demonstrated by interactions between interparental conflict and cultural beliefs about adversity, as well as, family functioning and cultural beliefs about adversity. The results indicated a buffering role of cultural beliefs about adversity on the deleterious effect of interparental conflict on adolescent depression. They also suggested that lower levels of family functioning was associated with increased depression among adolescents were lower in cultural beliefs about adversity.
This research aims to investigate the salience of mothers’ emotional expressivity and its links with adolescents’ emotional wellbeing and expressivity in an urban society endorsing more individualism and a rural society ascribing to more collectivism. By comparing Chinese urban (N = 283, Mage = 14.13) and rural (N = 247, Mage = 14.09) adolescents, this research found that urban mothers’ expression of positive-dominant and positive-submissive emotions (PD and PS) were more common while expression of negative-dominant (ND) emotions was less common than rural mothers’. PD and PS had significant links with urban and rural adolescents’ increased emotional expressivity and self-esteem, however, only significantly related to urban adolescents’ decreased depression but not with rural adolescents’. ND had significant links with both urban and rural adolescents’ expression of negative emotions, however, only significantly correlated with urban adolescents’ less level of self-esteem and rural adolescents’ more expression of positive emotions. No significant difference was found in the salience of urban and rural mothers’ expression of negative-submissive (NS) emotions, which positively related to both urban and rural adolescents’ depression and emotional expressivity. Moreover, we found that adolescents’ emotional wellbeing (i.e., self-esteem and depression) mediated the relationship between mothers’ emotional expressivity and adolescents’ expressivity in both societies. Overall, the study findings document that the salience of mothers’ emotional expressivity and its relations with adolescents’ emotional adjustment differ between urban and rural societies.
Recently, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have attracted intensive research interest as the next-generation supercapacitor electrodes due to their unique two-dimensional (2D) hydrotalcite-like structure. However, the inevitable agglomeration significantly decreases the accessible surface areas and blocks the pseudocapacitive sites, thus severely hinders their electrochemical applications. Herein, we develop a facile one-step growth approach to fabricate porous agglomerate of NiCo-LDH nanosheets and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanoflakes. By adjusting feeding molar ratios, the obtained NiCo-LDH/rGO electrode delivers a high specific capacity of 879.5 C/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g and still remains 485 C/g at 20 A/g. Furthermore, the fabricated asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) has demonstrated a superior energy density of 48.7 W h/kg at a power density of 401 W/kg. After 2000 cycles, the assembled ASC exhibits an improved capacity retention of 81% within a potential window of 1.6 V at 2 A/g.
A nanoparticle-based drug delivery system is first established by mesoporous silica encapsulating amino acid–intercalated layered double hydroxide (LDH) to construct nanocomposites AA-LDH@MS. The amino acids including phenylalanine (Phe) and histidine (His) with aromatic groups are intercalated into LDH as the cores Phe-LDH and His-LDH. These nanocomposites AA-LDH@MS display multispaces of the interlayer spaces of LDH and porous channels of mesoporous silica to load drugs. Moreover, amino acid molecules provide the interaction sites to improve effectively loading amounts of drugs. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is used as the cargo molecules to observe the delivery in vitro. The results indicate that the maximum loading amounts of drugs are up to 392 mg/g at 60 °C for 12 h in the nanocomposite Phe-LDH@MS. All the nanocomposites exhibit the sustained release of 5-FU at pH 4 and pH 7.4. The Korsmeyer–Peppas model is used to fit the kinetic plot of the drug release in vitro, which concludes that 5-FU release from AA-LDH@MS belongs to Fickian diffusion.
To determine the prevalence of high weight at different characteristics, understand the perceptions and behaviours towards high body weight, and determine potential influencing factors of body weight misperception among high-weight adults in Jilin Province.
Design
A cross-sectional survey with complex sampling design was conducted. We described the prevalence and perception of high body weight.
Setting
Northeast China in 2012.
Subjects
Adults (n 20 552) aged 18–79 years.
Results
Of overweight individuals, 37·4 % considered themselves as ‘normal weight’, 4·8 % reported themselves as being ‘very thin’ and only 53·1 % were aware of their own weight being ‘overweight’. About 1·8 % of both male and female obese individuals perceived themselves as ‘very thin’. Only 29·1 % of obese people thought of themselves as ‘too fat’. Nearly 30·0 % of centrally obese men and women perceived that their waist circumference was about right and they were of ‘normal weight’; 5·7 % of the centrally obese even perceived themselves as being ‘very thin’. Only 51·8 and 12·5 % of centrally obese individuals reported themselves to be ‘overweight’ or ‘too fat’. Body weight misperception was more common in rural residents (OR; 95 % CI: 1·340; 1·191, 1·509). The prevalence of body weight misperception increased with age (middle age: 1·826; 1·605, 2·078; old people: 3·101; 2·648, 3·632) and declined with increased education level (junior middle school: 0·628; 0·545, 0·723; senior middle school: 0·498; 0·426, 0·583; undergraduate and above: 0·395; 0·320, 0·487).
Conclusions
Body weight misperception was common among adults from Jilin Province.
In China, rapid economic growth and increasing social problems constitute the two basic characteristics underlying contemporary social change. With dramatic social change, loneliness in older adults may have changed across birth cohorts, thus altering older adults’ mental health. The present study aims to identify birth cohort changes in Chinese older adults’ loneliness and the social indicators underlying these changes.
Methods:
Cross-temporal meta-analysis was utilized to investigate changes in Chinese older adults’ loneliness from 1995 to 2011. We analyzed 25 studies (N = 13,280 adults; age ≥ 60 years) employing the University of California at Los Angeles Loneliness Scale. We correlated loneliness scores with social indicators and matched these correlations for three periods: ten years before the data collection, five years before data collection, and during the year of data collection.
Results:
Loneliness levels in Chinese older adults have increased by 1.02 standard deviations from 1995 to 2011. Social indicators such as increased urbanization level, personal medical expenditure, divorce rate, the Gini coefficient, and unemployment rate significantly predicted loneliness in Chinese older adults. Decrease in social connectedness and increase in levels of health threat may be responsible for the observed increase in levels of loneliness.
Conclusions:
Cross-temporal meta-analysis revealed a birth cohort increase in loneliness among Chinese older adults. We conclude that changes in social connectedness and levels of health threat likely play an important role in predicting loneliness in the population of Chinese elderly adults.
