The Japanese second deep ice coring project was carried out at Dome Fuji, Antarctica. Following the drilling of the pilot hole in 2001, deep ice core drilling led by the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) was conducted over four austral summer seasons, beginning with the 2003/04 season and reached a depth of 3035.22 m near the bedrock in January 2007. The new drill was designed and developed with the goals of (1) solving the problems encountered during the first JARE deep coring drill and (2) achieving more efficient drilling. In particular, the maximum core length that can be drilled at one time was increased from 2.30 m to 3.84 m and the chip storage efficiency was enhanced by a special pipe with many small holes. This paper gives an outline of the improved drilling system, the progress of drilling and various drilling data.

The phase transition in the melting of Sn–Bi eutectic solder alloy particles was observed by in situ hard X-ray ptychographic coherent diffraction imaging with a pin-point heating system. Ptychographic diffraction patterns of micrometer-sized Sn–Bi particles were collected at temperatures from room temperature to 540 K. The projection images of each particle were reconstructed at a spatial resolution of 25 nm, showing differences in the phase shifts due to two crystal phases in the Sn–Bi alloy system and the Sn/Bi oxides at the surface. By quantitatively evaluating the Bi content, it became clear that the nonuniformity of the composition of Sn and Bi at the single-particle level exists when the particles are synthesized by centrifugal atomization.

Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of dietary glycine (Gly) supplementation on inflammatory responses in broiler chicks fed a basal diet using maize and soyabean meal as the primary ingredients. Inflammation-related processes following lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection were examined by analysing plasma concentrations of nitrate plus nitrite (NOx) and ceruloplasmin (Cer) in experiments 1 and 2, or expression of several genes in the spleen and liver including IL-1β and -6, TNF-like ligand (TL)1A, inducible NO synthase, interferon (IFN)-γ and toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 were examined in experiment 3. Growth performance was also determined following immunological stimulation by both LPS and Sephadex injection in experiment 2. In experiment 1, birds fed a diet supplemented with Gly at 10 or 20 g/kg showed lower responses in plasma NOx and Cer than birds fed the diet supplemented with Gly at 0 or 40 g/kg. In experiment 2, a similar effect of Gly supplementation at 10 g/kg on plasma NOx and Cer was observed when chicks were fed either an isonitrogenous diet with Gly or glutamic acid (Glu). Gly-supplemented diet-fed birds showed better growth performance than Glu-supplemented diet-fed birds. The splenic expression of inflammatory response-related genes in birds fed a diet supplemented with Gly at 10 g/kg diet was lower than that of birds fed the basal diet in experiment 3. These results suggest that dietary Gly supplementation modulates the inflammatory response partly through changes in the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1, IL-6, IFN-γ and TL1A.

Laboratory x-ray fluorescence holography equipment was developed. A single-bent graphite monochromator with a large curvature and a high-count-rate x-ray detection system were applied in this equipment. To evaluate the performance of this equipment, a hologram pattern of a gold single crystal was measured. It took two days, which was about one-third the time required for the previous measurements using the conventional x-ray source and several times that using the synchrotron source. The quality of the hologram pattern is as good as that obtained using the synchrotrons. Clear atomic images on (002) are reconstructed.

The effect of dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers mixture on antibody titres against sheep blood erythrocytes (SRBC) and immunoglobulin (Ig) G concentration in plasma was studied in broiler chickens. In experiment 1, male and female broiler chicks (11 d of age, Cobb strain) were fed a diet supplemented with 10 g CLA or 10 g safflower-seed oil/kg diet for 2 weeks. An SRBC suspension (5:100, v/v) in a phosphate buffer was intravenously injected at 18 d of age and a blood sample was taken from the wing vein at 25 d of age. Chicks fed the CLA-supplemented diet had enhanced first antibody titres in plasma to SRBC as compared with those fed the safflower-seed oil-supplemented diet, irrespective of sex differences. In experiment 2, male broiler chicks (8 d of age, Ross strain) were fed a basal diet or a diet containing 10 g CLA/kg diet for 3 weeks. CLA in the CLA diet partially replaced the soyabean oil in the basal diet. The SRBC suspension was intravenously injected at 15 and 25 d of age and a blood sample was obtained at 21 and 29 d of age. The first antibody titres against SRBC were higher in chicks fed the CLA diet than those in chicks fed the basal diet, but the second titres were not. Plasma IgG concentrations in chicks fed the CLA diet were higher than those in chicks fed the basal diet on both sampling days. The results showed that dietary CLA enhanced antibody production in broiler chickens.

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of essential amino acid deficiencies on several immunological variables in male broiler chickens. Essential amino acids were classified into five groups as follows: S-containing amino acids (SAA; methionine + cysteine), aromatic amino acids (AAA; phenylalanine + tyrosine), branched-chain amino acids (BCAA; isoleucine + leucine + valine), arginine plus lysine (Arg + Lys), and other essential amino acids (OEAA; glycine + serine + histidine + threonine + tryptophan). Chickens were fed ad libitum from 10 to 24 d of age on a control diet or amino-acid-deficient diets formulated to contain each amino acid group at 50 % and 16 % (Expt 1) at 50 % (Expt 2) of the recommended requirements (). Effects of feed consumption on immune responses were also considered by setting pair-feeding (Expt 1) or restricted-feeding (Expt 2) groups fed on the control diet. In Expt 1, changes in lymphoid organ weights varied with the type and degree of deficiency of amino acid groups, with BCAA deficiency markedly decreasing weights. The haemagglutinin titres against sheep erythrocytes did not change in any amino-acid-deficient chickens except that the titres were lower in chickens fed on the 50 %- and 16 %-BCAA diets as compared with their pair-fed counterparts. In Expt 2, the splenocyte proliferative response to concanavalin A was higher in the chickens fed on the BCAA- and Arg + Lys-deficient diets and lower in chickens fed on the SAA- and AAA-deficient diets than the control chickens, independent of feed consumption. These results suggest that the effects of specific amino acid deficiencies on immune responses cannot be generalized, and that BCAA have the greatest potential to modulate immune responses among the amino acids in chickens.

The effect of dietary protein concentration on stress responses against injection of Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was studied in male broiler chickens. Chickens (7 d of age) were fed on a 100 (low-protein; LP) or 300 g protein/kg (high-protein; HP) diet for 2 weeks. LPS was injected intraperitoneally every 2 d during the final 6 d, or once 16 h before the end of the experiment, at a concentration of 900 μg/chick. The LPS injection did not affect body-weight gain, feed intake, gain:intake ratio, or plasma Fe concentration. The single injection of LPS reduced plasma Zn concentration, but the repeated injections did not. Feeding the HP diet increased the response of plasma Zn concentration to the single injection of LPS. Plasma albumin concentration was reduced by LPS injection. Feeding the HP diet resulted in a higher plasma α 1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) concentration than feeding the LP diet, in chicks untreated with LPS. An increase in plasma AGP concentration observed after LPS injection in chicks fed on the LP diet was greater than that seen in chicks fed on the HP diet. No significant changes in plasma AGP concentration in response to repeated injections of LPS were observed in chicks fed on the HP diet. Plasma interleukin-1 (IL-l)-like activity was greater in chicks fed on the LP diet than in those fed on the HP diet, when LPS was injected. The response of plasma IL-1-like activity to the single injection of LPS in chicks fed on the LP diet was the greatest among the treatment groups. These results suggest that acute-phase responses to LPS injection are much greater in chicks fed on a LP diet than in those fed on a HP diet, and multiple injection of LPS weakens the responses.

X-ray diffraction observation of fracture surfaces provides fracture analysis with useful information on the mechanisms and mechanical conditions of fracturing. This method is called ” X-ray fractography “ and has been developed especially in Japan as a new engineering tool for fracture analysis.

In the present paper, X-ray fractography is applied to fatigue fracture surfaces of AZ91 magnesium alloy which are used for machine parts. The X-ray stress constant, H,was first determined. The fatigue tests were conducted by using compact tension ( CT ) specimens of AZ91 magnesium alloy. The residual stress was measured on and beneath the fatigue fracture surface. The depth of the plastic zone left on the fatigue fracture surface was evaluated from the residual stress distribution. The results are discussed on the basis of fracture mechanics.

New materials in the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-La alloy system have been proposed for improving corrosion resistance in a study by Kishi et al, because Lanthanum, La, has a storage capability for hydrogen. Hydrogen is a problem in the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) growth mechanism. Zinc, Zn, Magnesium, Mg, and Copper, Cu, in the alloy have influenced the extrusion, strength and other properties; however, in the case of putting this material to use, it is also necessary to evaluate it from the viewpoint of fracture mechanics. The stress intensity factor, K, obtained from fracture mechanics is a necessary parameter for the evaluation of various materials.

The first part of this study deals with the measurement of fatigue crack growth in the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-La alloy system. The second part evaluates the fracture surface obtained from tests of these materials by the application of x-ray fractography.

The right ascension of 3C273B has been a reference of the celestial VLBI coordinate system. However it seems that 3C273B is inadequate for the reference because 3C273B has the jet component which was detected on long baselines in our experiments. We present the best reference source for celestial coordinate system. Next we estimated the source positions, taking the new reference radio source. The nutation and plate motion were considered in our analysis. We show the change of 3C273B position. The estimated source positions are compared with those given in GSFC source catalog (1985).

A numerical method is proposed for computing the stationary probabilities of a Markovian system consisting of two subsystems with slight interrelation. It exploits the independent features of the subsystems for evaluating the effects of their interrelation. In a test with a simple example, the numerical method proposed required less computational burden than other common numerical methods.

It is shown that, in a multiserver queue with interarrival and service-time distributions of phase type (PH/PH/c), the waiting-time distribution W(x) has an asymptotically exponential tail, i.e., 1 – W(x) ∽ Ke–ckx. The parameter k is the unique positive number satisfying T*(ck) S*(–k) = 1, where T*(s) and S*(s) are the Laplace–Stieltjes transforms of the interarrival and the service-time distributions. It is also shown that the queue-length distribution has an asymptotically geometric tail with the rate of decay η = T*(ck). The proofs of these results are based on the matrix-geometric form of the state probabilities of the system in the steady state.

The equation for k shows interesting relations between single- and multiserver queues in the rates of decay of the tails of the waiting-time and the queue-length distributions.

The parameters k and η can be easily computed by solving an algebraic equation. The multiplicative constant K is not so easy to compute. In order to obtain its numerical value we have to solve the balance equations or estimate it from simulation.
