Cable-guiding mechanisms (CGMs) and the stiffness characteristics directly influence the dynamic features of the cable-driven upper limb rehabilitation robot (PCUR), which will affect PCUR’s performance. This paper introduces a novel CGM design. Given the precision and movement stability considerations of the mechanism, an analytical model is developed. Using this model, we analyze the error of the CGM and derive velocity and acceleration mappings from the moving platform to the cables. Continuity of cable trajectory and tension is rigorously demonstrated. Subsequently, a mathematical model for PCUR stiffness is formulated. Utilizing MATLAB/Simscape Multibody, simulation models for the CGM and stiffness characteristics are constructed. The feasibility of the proposed CGM design is validated through simulation and experimentation, while the influence of stiffness characteristics on PCUR motion stability is comprehensively analyzed.

We find that mortgage loans originated after the adoption of the inevitable disclosure doctrine (IDD; a mechanism discouraging loan officers’ labor mobility) have a lower default probability, a higher loan modification rate, and a lower foreclosure rate. These effects are unaccompanied by any reduction in loan supply and contribute to more stable housing prices. Using the adoption of the Uniform Trade Secrets Act as an alternative identification generates consistent results. Overall, our findings suggest that restricting loan officers’ labor mobility leads to better ex ante screening and ex post monitoring, improving the origination efficiency for U.S. residential mortgage loans.

Redesign is a widespread strategy for product improvement whose essence is the optimization of design parameters (DPs) considering the trade-off between customer satisfaction and cost concerns. Similar to the relation between customer requirements (CRs) and customer satisfaction, the sensitivity of customer satisfaction is diverse to different DPs. In this study, a sensitivity-enhanced customer satisfaction function is defined for redesign model construction. This fills the research gap in product redesign that lacking of consideration and quantification of customer satisfaction sensitivity. First, a sensitivity index is defined based on Kano indices for analyzing sensitivity of customer satisfaction in different DP categories. Second, traditional customer satisfaction function has been improved by injecting the sensitivity of customer satisfaction to the variations of DPs. Subsequently, a DP optimization model is established to maximize shared surplus between customers and enterprise. Finally, a case study involving the redesign of a braking system of automobile is implemented to demonstrate the effectiveness and rationality of the proposed approach. The results show that the improved customer satisfaction function can reflect a more nuanced relationship between customer satisfaction and fulfilment level of DPs. Additionally, the proposed redesign model helps designers determine the target values of DPs under a better trade-off and enhances enterprise competitiveness.

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a public health emergency of international concern. The current study aims to explore whether the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are associated with the development of death in patients with COVID-19. A total of 131 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 from 13 February 2020 to 14 March 2020 in a hospital in Wuhan designated for treating COVID-19 were enrolled in the current study. These 131 patients had a median age of 64 years old (interquartile range: 56–71 years old). Furthermore, among these patients, 111 (91.8%) patients were discharged and 12 (9.2%) patients died in the hospital. The pooled analysis revealed that the NLR at admission was significantly elevated for non-survivors, when compared to survivors (P < 0.001). The NLR of 3.338 was associated with all-cause mortality, with a sensitivity of 100.0% and a specificity of 84.0% (area under the curve (AUC): 0.963, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.911–1.000; P < 0.001). In view of the small number of deaths (n = 12) in the current study, NLR of 2.306 might have potential value for helping clinicians to identify patients with severe COVID-19, with a sensitivity of 100.0% and a specificity of 56.7% (AUC: 0.729, 95% CI 0.563–0.892; P = 0.063). The NLR was significantly associated with the development of death in patients with COVID-19. Hence, NLR is a useful biomarker to predict the all-cause mortality of COVID-19.

RNA delivery into deep tissues with dense extracellular matrix (ECM) has been challenging. For example, cartilage is a major barrier for RNA and drug delivery due to its avascular structure, low cell density and strong negative surface charge. Cartilage ECM is comprised of collagens, proteoglycans, and various other noncollagneous proteins with a spacing of 20nm. Conventional nanoparticles are usually spherical with a diameter larger than 50-60nm (after cargo loading). Therefore, they presented limited success for RNA delivery into cartilage. Here, we developed Janus base nanotubes (JBNTs, self-assembled nanotubes inspired from DNA base pairs) to assemble with small RNAs to form nano-rod delivery vehicles (termed as “Nanopieces”). Nanopieces have a diameter of ∼20nm (smallest delivery vehicles after cargo loading) and a length of ∼100nm. They present a novel breakthrough in ECM penetration due to the reduced size and adjustable characteristics to encourage ECM and intracellular penetration.

We examine how information-processing cost affects investors’ acquisition of firm-specific information using a natural experiment resulting from a recent mandate requiring U.S. firms to adopt eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) when submitting filings to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). XBRL filings make financial data standardized, tagged, and machine readable. We find that XBRL adoption reduces firms’ stock return synchronicity. The reduction in synchronicity mainly applies to filings under the mandatory program as opposed to the voluntary program. Furthermore, such an effect is more pronounced for opaque and complex firms. Finally, we find that XBRL adoption also reduces price delay.

Carbon nanomaterials are viewed as promising building blocks of future nanotechnology because of their superior electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. Carbon nanomaterials can be synthesized by a variety of methods, in which flames offer a potential route in large quantities at a significantly lower cost. Our group has worked on growth of carbon nanomaterials involving carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and graphenes in flames for more than 15 years, and almost 100 journal papers have been published. In this paper, we review the advances in synthesis of carbon nanomaterials from flames in detail together with discussion on the major challenges and opportunities for practical applications.

In addition to the piezoelectric nanogenerators and triboelectric nanogenerators, recently, the graphene-based nanogenerator has been widely concerned because of its simple assembly, flexibility and high structural stability. There are many interesting effects in graphene applied for nanogenenrators including anion adsorption in electrolyte solution, ion channels in graphene sheets network and the strain (band engineering) effect, etc. In this paper, we focus explicitly on the experimental results, mechanisms and applications of the graphene-based nanogenerator, and introduce our recent research on the graphene-based nanogenerator based on "modulation of the graphene strain-energy band effect". This nanogenerator is expected to have potential applications in active sensors and sustainable power source.

An experiment was conducted to study the seasonal changes in the fatty acid profile of milk from yaks (Bos grunniens) when kept at altitudes of 3000 m above sea level (a.s.l.) and higher. Data and samples were collected in summer (July), autumn (September), winter (November) and spring (March) from ten lactating yaks (four in spring). The yaks grazed pastures adjacent to the farm building throughout the year. In spring only they received 0·6 kg crop by-products per day (dry matter basis). Fresh alpine grasses, available in summer and autumn, showed high concentrations of α-linolenic acid (46–51 g/100 g lipids) compared with the dry, yellow vegetation of winter and spring (16 g/100 g lipids). In autumn and summer, the milk fat had higher concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids than in winter. These polyunsaturated fatty acids were comprised of vaccenic acid, rumenic acid and α-linolenic acid, which are all considered beneficial to human health. The rare fatty acid, γ-linolenic acid, was also detected in yak milk, especially in the milk obtained in spring. The results suggest that yak milk, which is the most important basic food of the Tibetan herders, has the most favourable fatty acid profile when yaks grazed green pasture, which also corresponds to the period of highest milk production.

ZnO/TiO2 heterojunction composite fibers were prepared via a physical route, i.e., first electrospinning titanium dioxide (TiO2) fibers, then pulse plating zinc (Zn) on the fibers, and at last thermal treating the fibers. The morphologies, phase structures, and photocatalytic property of the composite fibers were characterized by using field-emission gun scanning electron microscope, x-ray diffractometer, high-resolution transmission electron microscope, and ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometer. It was found that a full or partial lattice coherent heterojunction was formed between the TiO2 fibers and zinc oxide (ZnO) particles, due to thermal treatment at 400 °C, which simultaneously resulted in the phase transformations including Zn to ZnO and amorphous TiO2 to anatase TiO2. The experimental results demonstrated that the photocatalytic activity of the composite fibers was improved and exhibited a value more than two times higher than that of TiO2 fibers.

We found evidence for the super–orbital modulation in the X-ray emission of LS I + 61°303 from the longest monitoring date by the RXTE. The time evolution of the modulated fraction in the orbital light curves can be well fitted with a sinusoidal function having a super-orbital period of 1667 days. However, we have found a 281.8±44.6 day shift between the super-orbital variability found at radio frequencies and our X-ray data. We also find a super-orbital modulation in the maximum count rate of the orbital light curves, compatible with the former results, including the shift.

This paper presents results for infrared transparent and conducting thin films based on In2O3. The films have been prepared by magnetrons sputtering equipment with different condition. Typical transmittance of 70%-80% with a film sheet resistance of 80-300Ω/□ in the 3.5-5.0μrn region has been achieved.

Optically transparent and electrically conductive semiconductor Oxide films have been extensively studied in recent years. Such films have been prepared by various methods. In general, these films have high visible transmittance, but are opaque in the IR wavelength range of 1-12μm IR transmission. The infrared transparent and electrically conductive thin films are useful in certain important applications. For example, these films can be use as antistatic coatings, and while permitting a reasonable transmission coefficient for IR. Another obvious application is to serve as the conducting electrode for various optical devices where good infrared transmission is important. So, it is important to research indium oxide base infrared (3-5 um) transparent conduction thin films.

It has been developed that preparation condition influence on properties of thin films. Such as the sputtering time, and pressure, and power, and the substrate temperature, had great influence on the crystal structure, optical and electrical properties of In2O3-based thin films.

The In2O3-based thin films obtained were characterized and analyzed by X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Vander Pauw Method and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR).

Rosette nanotubes (RNTs) are novel, biomimetic, synthetic, self-assembled drug delivery agents. Because of base stacking and hydrophobic interactions, the RNT hollow-tube structure can be used for incorporating drugs. Another advantage of using RNTs is their ability to be injected and become solid at body temperatures for orthopedic applications without the use of any external stimuli (such as UV light or crosslinking agents). The nano-features of RNTs create a favorable, biologically-inspired, cellular environment. In this study, methods to incorporate dexamethasone (DEX, a bone growth promoting drug) into RNTs were investigated. The drug-loaded RNTs were characterized using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy (DOSY) and Ultraviolet-visible Spectroscopy (UV-vis). Results showed that small molecular drugs with hydrophobic aromatic rings were incorporated into RNTs. Subsequent drug release experiments demonstrated that DEX was released from the RNTs and had a positive impact on osteoblast functions. Importantly, compared to other drug carriers, RNTs increased the total drug loading and was the highest when DEX was incorporated during the RNT self-assembly process. Thus, this study offered a novel drug delivery device that itself is bioactive and can be used to deliver a variety of drugs for various orthopedic applications.

Li2M(WO4)2 (M = Co and Ni) were synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction method and characterized by powder x-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) measurement, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectra, Raman spectroscopy, and photocatalytic evaluation measurements. Photocatalytic water splitting results showed that Li2M(WO4)2 (M = Co and Ni) exhibited abilities for H2 evolution with Pt cocatalyst from an aqueous methanol solution and for O2 evolution from an aqueous AgNO3 solution under UV light irradiation. Theoretical calculation, absorbance analysis, and photocatalytic H2 evolution experiment revealed that the position of W 5d level shifted to the negative side with respect to the reduced potential of H+/H2. The photocatalytic H2 evolution over Li2M(WO4)2 is discussed from the view of crystal and electronic structure point.

The current clinical treatment of cartilage defects involves autologous chondrocyte implantation into cartilage defect sites. However, one of the complications associated with this method is the lack of bonding between the implanted materials and natural tissue. Helical rosette nanotubes (HRNs) are novel biomimetic self-assembled supramolecular structures whose basic building blocks are DNA base-pairs. HRNs are similar in size to collagen in cartilage. Moreover, previous studies have shown that HRNs are biocompatible and increase the adhesion of numerous cells compared to other commonly used cartilage implant materials (like hydrogels and Ti). In addition, HRNs can solidify into a viscous gel at body temperatures under short periods of time. Thus, it is hoped that HRNs can serve as a novel in situ tissue implant to improve cartilage cell adhesion and functions. In this study, in order to heal cartilage rupture and regenerate cartilage during possible implantation, the mechanical properties of select hydrogel/HRN composites were tested. In addition, electro-spinning was used to generate three-dimensional, implantable, composite fibers encapsulated with chondrocytes and fibroblast-like type-B synoviocytes (SFB cells, a type of mesenchymal stem cell). Importantly, results showed that drug-delivered HRNs enhanced hydrogel adhesive strength and created a scaffold with nanometer-rough surface structures pertinent for cartilage regeneration. In this manner, this study provided an alternative cartilage regenerative material which relies on nanotechnology that can be injected as a liquid, solidify at body temperatures under short periods of time, have suitable mechanical properties to collagen, and promote cell functions.
