We study the dynamic deflation of a hydraulic fracture subject to fluid withdrawal through a narrow conduit located at the centre of the fracture. Recent work revealed a self-similar dipole-flow regime, when the influence of material toughness is negligibly small. The focus of the current work is on the influence of material toughness, which leads to an additional self-similar regime of fracture deflation with fixed frontal locations in the toughness-dominated regime. The two limiting regimes can be distinguished by a dimensionless material toughness $\Pi _k$, defined based on a comparison with the influence of the viscous thin film flow within the fracture: $\Pi _k \to 0$ indicates the dipole-flow regime, while $\Pi _k \to \infty$ indicates the fixed-length regime. For intermediate $\Pi _k$, the fracture’s front continues to propagate during an initial period of deflation before it remains pinned at a fixed location thereafter. A regime diagram is then derived, with key scaling behaviours for the frontal dynamics, pressure and volume evolution summarised in a table for the self-similar stage. A comparison is also attempted between theoretical predictions and available experimental observations of viscous backflows from transparent solid gelatins.

We study the dynamics of fracture deflation following hydraulic fracturing of an infinite elastic solid, with fluid removal from a narrow conduit at the centre. This process involves coupled lubricating flow and elastic deformation, now subject to appropriate descriptions of fluid removal through the conduit towards the ambient, driven by elastic stresses and extraction/suction. When the influence of material toughness is negligible, the dynamics is found to be governed by two dimensionless parameters that describe the relative influence of elasticity-driven backflow ($\Pi _c$) and ambient-pressure-driven backflow ($\Pi _e$), respectively. We also found that the fracture’s thickness eventually approaches zero at the centre, while the fracture evolves into a self-similar shape of the dipole type that conserves the dipole moment $M$. The fracture’s front continues to elongate according to $x_f \propto t^{1/9}$, while the total fluid volume within the fracture decreases according to $V \propto t^{-1/9}$. The model and solutions might find use in practical problems to estimate the rate of backflow and effective permeability of a fractured reservoir once pressure is released.

We investigate the relative merits of the Boston and Serial Dictatorship mechanisms when the timing of students’ preference submission over schools varies within the structure of the mechanism. Despite the well-documented disadvantages of the Boston mechanism Abdulkadiroglu and Sonmez (American Economic Review 93:729–747 2003), we hypothesize that a Boston mechanism where students are required to submit their preferences before the realization of their exam scores, can in fact have fairness and efficiency advantages compared to the often favored Serial Dictatorship mechanism. We test these hypotheses in a series of laboratory experiments which vary by the class of mechanism implemented, and the preference submission timing by students, reflective of actual policy changes which have occurred in China. Our experimental findings confirm the efficiency hypothesis straightforwardly, and lend support to the fairness hypothesis when subjects have the chance to learn with experience. The results have important policy implications for school choice mechanism design when students’ relative rankings by schools are initially uncertain.

We study the dynamics of hydraulic fracturing of an elastic solid in a Hele-Shaw cell. Compared with hydraulic fractures in an infinite elastic bulk, the viscous resistance comes mainly from the drag by the two parallel plates that forms the Hele-Shaw cell rather than by the fluid–solid interface. Such a feature leads to a different nonlinear differential–integral system that describes the coupled evolution of the fracture shape and pressure field. Our theory leads to hydraulic fractures of cusp shapes in the neighbourhood of the fracture tip, which is consistent with recent experimental observations. Accordingly, there exists no pressure singularity at the location of the fracture tip, which is also fundamentally different from our previous understandings of hydraulic fracturing of elastic solids.

A modulational instability of nonlinearly interacting electron whistlers and magnetosonic perturbations is studied in the present paper. For typical parameters, there is no modulational instability. However, modulational instability appears in special cases. For example, when the whistler wavenumber is small enough, there is modulational instability. Its growth rate decreases as the angle between the external magnetic field and the perturbed wave's direction increases, while it increases as the whistler wavenumber increases. It is also found that there is no modulational instability when the whistler wavenumber is larger than a critical value ($k_0 > 0.05$), in which the perturbed wave frequency increases as the angle between the external magnetic field and the perturbed wave's direction increases when the angle between the external magnetic field and the perturbed wave's direction is large enough. Whereas, the perturbed wave frequency first increases as the whistler wavenumber increases, reaches a peak value and then decreases as whistler wavenumber increases.

Based on 30 high-resolution U-Th dating controls, we reconstruct stalagmite δ18O records from 45 to 15 thousand years ago (ka B.P., before AD 1950) from the Shizhu Cave, which is located in southwestern China under the influence of both the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) and the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM). By integrating with the other stalagmite δ18O records in Asia during the middle to late last glacial, our results reveal two main moisture trajectories: one from the Indian Ocean, through the Shizhu Cave towards central China, and the other from the Pacific Ocean to central and northern China. The systematic decrease of the average values of stalagmite δ18O records from oceans to inland China reveals a spatial pattern of water vapour fractionation and moisture trajectory during the middle to late last glacial. In contrast, the variation amplitude, which is defined as the departures apart from the background δ18O records during Heinrich stadials 1 to 4 (HS1–HS4), show an increasing trend from the coastal oceans to mid-latitude inland China, presenting a ‘coastal-inland’ pattern, which can be interpreted by the enhanced East Asian Winter Monsoon (EAWM) and the weakened EASM. More specifically, the enriched stalagmite δ18O records in the EASM region during HS1 to HS4 are caused by the decreased summer rainfall amount or/and the increased proportion of summer moisture resources from the Pacific Ocean. These new observations deepen our understanding of the complicated stalagmite δ18O records in the EASM region.

We study the dynamic interaction of two gravity currents in a confined porous layer, one heavier and one lighter, partly inspired by the practice of geological $\mathrm {CO}_2$ sequestration in oil fields. Two coupled nonlinear advective-diffusive equations are derived to describe the time evolution of the profile shape of both the upper (lighter) and lower (heavier) currents. At early times, the upper and lower currents remain separated and propagate independently. As time progresses, the currents approach each other and start to interact. We have identified eight different regimes of gravity current interaction at late times, impacted by four dimensionless parameters, representing the flow rate partition, ratio of buoyancy over the injection force, and the viscosity contrasts between the two injecting and displaced fluids. By defining appropriate similarity variables at either the early or late times, the governing partial differential equations (PDEs) reduce to different ordinary differential equations (ODEs), corresponding to the classic nonlinear diffusion solutions at early times and eight different self-similar solutions at late times when the currents attach to each other. It is of interest to note that in four of the eight regimes of late-time interaction (regimes 2, 6–8), self-similar solutions can be constructed by combining appropriately the three basic solutions (i.e. shock, rarefaction and travelling wave solutions) identified during single fluid injection in confined porous layers. In the four other regimes (regimes 1, 3–5), implicit solutions in the form of logarithm or error functions are obtained due to the influence of flow confinement and interaction of gravity currents. Potential implications of the model and solutions are also briefly discussed in the context of ${\rm CO}_2$-water co-flooding for simultaneous ${\rm CO}_2$ sequestration and oil recovery.

The coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a major destructive insect pest of coffee, which impacts the coffee crops negatively. As a draft genome has been completed for this insect, most molecular studies on gene transcriptional levels under different experimental conditions will be conducted using real-time reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reactions (RT-qPCR). However, the lack of suitable internal reference genes will affect the accuracy of RT-qPCR results. In this study, the expression stability of nine candidate reference genes was evaluated under different developmental stages, temperature stress, and Beauveria bassiana infection. Data analyses were completed by four commonly used programs, BestKeeper, NormFinder, geNorm, and RefFinder. The result showed that RPL3 and EF1α combination were recommended as the most stable reference genes for developmental stages. EF1α and RPS3a combination were the top two stable reference genes for B. bassiana infection. RPS3a and RPL3 combination performed as the optimal reference genes both in temperature stress and all samples. Our results should provide a good foundation for the expression profile analyses of target genes in the future, especially for molecular studies on insect genetic development, temperature adaptability, and immune mechanism to entomogenous fungi in H. hampei.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) possess fast-moving abilities and have been used in various tasks in the past decades. However, their performances are still restricted by insufficient endurance and confined environments. Intuitively, combining other locomotion modes with UAVs, such as diving and driving, would be an appropriate idea to improve the robot’s adaptability and solve the endurance problem. Recently, the terrestrial/aerial hybrid robots have drawn the researchers’ eyes for their outstanding performances, which can deploy flight mode to traverse insurmountable terrains and ground mode to increase endurance and realize detailed searches. Therefore, this paper developed the autonomous quadrotor tilting hybrid robot (AQT-HR) to achieve terrestrial/aerial dual-modal mobility and verified that the robot delivers high energy efficiency. The AQT-HR can achieve flying and driving through a quadrotor tilting mechanism, which can alter one single driving force into different directions. Furthermore, the dynamic models of the hybrid robot’s aerial and ground locomotion are derived and introduced into the model-feedforward PID control algorithm for improving the robot’s flying stability. Finally, we conducted some mobility tests and experiments about traversing obstacles to demonstrate that the proposed hybrid robot can realize autonomous mode switching and perform a low energy consumption in ground movement mode.

The association between sarcopenia and kidney function remains poorly investigated. We aimed to evaluate the associations between sarcopenia status and kidney function (rapid kidney function decline and chronic kidney disease (CKD)) in middle-aged and older Chinese population. A total of 9375 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011 were included in the cross-sectional analyses. A total of 5864 participants with eGFRcr-cys ≥ 60 ml/min per 1·73 m2 at baseline were included in the longitudinal analyses and were followed up in 2015. Sarcopenia status was defined according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 criteria. In the cross-sectional analyses, possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia were significantly associated with an increased risk of CKD. During the 4 years of follow-up, 359 (6·12 %) participants experienced rapid decline in kidney function and 126 (2·15 %) participants developed CKD. After multivariable adjustment of baseline eGFRcr-cys level and other risk factors, possible sarcopenia (OR, 1·33; 95 % CI 1·01, 2·12) and sarcopenia (OR, 1·49; 95 % CI 1·05, 2·12) were associated with an increased risk of primary outcome (composite of rapid decline in kidney function (annualised decline in eGFRcr-cys ≥ 5 ml/min per 1·73 m2) and progression to CKD (eGFRcr-cys < 60 ml/min per 1·73 m2). Individuals with low muscle mass or low muscle strength alone also had an increased risk of rapid decline in kidney function and progression to CKD.

The interactions of upper (lighter) and lower (heavier) gravity currents are closely related to fluid-phase resource recovery in porous layers and cleaning of confined spaces. The addition of a second current increases the sweep efficiency of fluid displacement. In this paper, we first derive two ordinary differential equations to describe the interaction of gravity currents in the quasi-steady regime. Two asymptotic regimes are identified, characterised by whether or not the two currents attach to each other, depending on whether the source fluxes are large enough. In the attached regime, a symmetry condition is also identified that describes whether or not the pumping and buoyancy forces balance each other. The model also leads to analytical solutions for the interface shape of the interacting currents in both the detached and attached regimes and for both symmetric and asymmetric currents. For symmetric currents, analytical solutions can also be obtained for the pressure distribution along cap rocks and the sweep efficiency of flooding processes. A particularly interesting aspect is that the displaced fluid remains quiescent at any steady state, regardless of whether the currents attach to each other. Correspondingly, the interface shape of the currents can be described by relatively simple equations and solutions, as if the currents propagate independently in unconfined porous layers. Time transition towards quasi-steady solutions is provided, employing time-dependent numerical solutions of two coupled partial differential equations for dynamic current interaction.

Folate, also known as vitamin B9, is a water-soluble vitamin. Previous studies on dietary folate intake in severe headache patients were equivocal. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional study to elucidate the relationship between folate intake and severe headache. This cross-sectional study used data from participants over 20 years old who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2004. The diagnosis of severe headache was made through participants’ self-report in the NHANES questionnaire section. We performed multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression to explore the relationship between folate intake and severe headache. A total of 9859 participants took part in the study, 1965 of whom were severe headache patients and the rest were non-severe headache. We found that dietary folate intake was significantly and inversely associated with severe headache. Compared with participants with lower folate intake Q1 (≤ 229·97 ug/d), the adjusted OR values for dietary folate intake and severe headache in Q2 (229·98–337 ug/d), Q3 (337·01–485 ug/d) and Q4 (≥ 485·01 ug/d) were 0·81 (95 % CI: 0·67, 0·98, P = 0·03), 0·93 (95 % CI: 0·77, 1·12, P = 0·41) and 0·63 (95 % CI: 0·49, 0·80, P < 0·001), respectively. For women aged 20–50 years, there was a non-linear association between folate intake and severe headache in the RCS. Women aged 20–50 years should have higher awareness of dietary folate and increase their dietary intake of folate, which may aid in preventing severe headache.

Characterising interfacial and unsaturated flows in heterogeneous porous layers is of both fundamental and practical interest. Under the assumption of vertical gravitational–capillary equilibrium, we present a theoretical model to describe one-dimensional flows in a porous layer with vertical variations in average pore size, porosity, intrinsic permeability and capillary pressure jump between invading and displaced fluids. The model leads to asymptotic solutions for the saturation distribution and outer envelope of the invading fluid, and for the background pressure drop across the porous layer. Eight dimensionless parameters are recognised after appropriate non-dimensionalisation of the governing equations, the influence of which is demonstrated through a series of example calculations. In particular, four asymptotic regimes are identified, representing unconfined sharp-interface flows, confined sharp-interface flows, unconfined unsaturated flows and confined unsaturated flows. Finally, in the context of flow upscaling, analytical solutions are derived for the effective relative permeability curves on the basis of exact solutions of the saturation field and interface shape, shedding light on the subtle influence of competition between injection/pumping and gravitational forces, wetting and capillary effects, viscosity contrast between the invading and displaced fluids and vertical heterogeneity of the porous layer.

Growth of a fluid-infused patch on a thin porous layer, e.g. on a piece of paper or cloth, is related to the transmission of virus particles through exhaled droplets and aerosols. We present a theoretical model to describe how a wet patch develops gradually through imbibition, once a sessile droplet attaches at a permeable surface and drains gradually into a thin porous layer. Two limiting cases are considered based on different assumptions on the motion of the contact line during the coupled process of drop drainage and patch growth: (i) the apparent contact angle remains unchanged, so the radius of a sessile droplet decreases with time; and (ii) the location of the contact line remains pinned, so the contact angle decreases as time progresses. The model leads to evolution pathways for both the droplet and the fluid film within the porous layer, without introducing arbitrary fitting parameters. Potential implications of the model and its solutions are also discussed briefly in the context of the outspread of COVID-19, employing physical parameters for exhaled droplets, paper and cloth.

The optimization of laser pulse shapes is of great importance and a major challenge for laser direct-drive implosions. In this paper, we propose an efficient intelligent method to perform laser pulse optimization via hydrodynamic simulations guided by the genetic algorithm and random forest algorithm. Compared to manual optimizations, the machine-learning guided method is able to efficiently improve the areal density by a factor of 63% and reduce the in-flight-aspect ratio by a factor of 30% at the same time. A relationship between the maximum areal density and ion temperature is also achieved by the analysis of the big simulation dataset. This design method has been successfully demonstrated by the 2021 summer double-cone ignition experiments conducted at the SG-II upgrade laser facility and has great prospects for the design of other inertial fusion experiments.

We characterized the proteome profile of mid-lactation small-tailed Han (STH) and DairyMeade (DM) ovine milk in order to explore physiological variation and differences in milk traits between the two breeds. Methodology combined a tandem mass tag (TMT) proteomic approach with LC-MS/MS technology. A total of 656 proteins were identified in STH and DM ovine milk, of which 17and 29 proteins were significantly upregulated (P < 0.05) in STH and DM, respectively. Immune-related proteins and disease-related proteins were highly expressed in STH milk, whereas S100A2 and AEBP1 were highly expressed in DM milk, which had beneficial effects on mammary gland development and milk yield. Our results provide a theoretical basis for future breeding of dairy sheep.

Chronic inflammation exerts pleiotropic effects in the aetiology and progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Glucosamine is widely used in many countries and may have anti-inflammatory properties. We aimed to prospectively evaluate the association of regular glucosamine use with incident COPD risk and explore whether such association could be modified by smoking in the UK Biobank cohort, which recruited more than half a million participants aged 40–69 years from across the UK between 2006 and 2010. Cox proportional hazards models with adjustment for potential confounding factors were used to calculate hazard ratios (HR) as well as 95 % CI for the risk of incident COPD. During a median follow-up of 8·96 years (interquartile range 8·29–9·53 years), 9016 new-onset events of COPD were documented. We found that the regular use of glucosamine was associated with a significantly lower risk of incident COPD with multivariable adjusted HR of 0·80 (95 % CI, 0·75, 0·85; P < 0·001). When subgroup analyses were performed by smoking status, the adjusted HR for the association of regular glucosamine use with incident COPD were 0·84 (0·73, 0·96), 0·84 (0·77, 0·92) and 0·71 (0·62, 0·80) among never smokers, former smokers and current smokers, respectively. No significant interaction was observed between glucosamine use and smoking status (P for interaction = 0·078). Incident COPD could be reduced by 14 % to 84 % through a combination of regular glucosamine use and smoking cessation.

The provenance and tectonic setting of the Lower–Middle Triassic clastic sediments from the Napo basin, South China, have been examined here using detrital modes, whole-rock geochemistry and detrital zircon U–Pb ages. Field investigations indicate that these sediments consist of fan delta, slope and turbidity fan facies with dominantly southward palaeocurrent directions. Detrital modes and geochemical characteristics of the clastic rocks indicate that they were derived from mixed magmatic arc and Palaeozoic successions in a continental island arc setting, with no significant sediment recycling. The U–Pb age spectra of sandstone detrital zircons from different stratigraphic positions are similar, with one major group (300–230 Ma), two subordinate groups (400–320 Ma and 480–420 Ma, respectively) and two scattered groups (1200–800 Ma and 2000–1700 Ma, respectively). Thus, we consider that the north late Permian – Middle Triassic volcanic rocks and the uplifted Palaeozoic sedimentary/volcanic sequences constituted the predominant sources. The detritus derived from the late Permian Emeishan mafic rocks is subordinate and limited. The pre-Devonian zircons are likely sedimentary-recycled or magmatic-captured instead of directly derived from the early Palaeozoic orogen (e.g. Yunkai massif) and Neoproterozoic Jiangnan orogen because of the topographic barrier of a magmatic arc and carbonate platform. Considering the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of the volcanic arc and ophiolite, we suggest that the Triassic Napo basin was a fore-arc basin within a continental island arc setting, which developed in response to the northward subduction of the Babu–Cao Bang branch ocean beneath the South China Block.
