The spatio-temporal scales, as well as a comprehensive self-sustained mechanism of the reattachment unsteadiness in shock wave/boundary layer interaction, are investigated in this study. Direct numerical simulations reveal that the reattachment unsteadiness of a Mach 7.7 laminar inflow causes over $26\,\%$ variation in wall friction and up to $20\,\%$ fluctuation in heat flux at the reattachment of the separation bubble. A statistical approach, based on the local reattachment upstream movement, is proposed to identify the spanwise and temporal scales of reattachment unsteadiness. It is found that two different types, i.e. self-induced and random processes, dominate different regions of reattachment. A self-sustained mechanism is proposed to comprehend the reattachment unsteadiness in the self-induced region. The intrinsic instability of the separation bubble transports vorticity downstream, resulting in an inhomogeneous reattachment line, which gives rise to baroclinic production of quasi-streamwise vortices. The pairing of these vortices initiates high-speed streaks and shifts the reattachment line upstream. Ultimately, viscosity dissipates the vortices, triggering instability and a new cycle of reattachment unsteadiness. The temporal scale and maximum vorticity are estimated with the self-sustained mechanism via order-of-magnitude analysis of the enstrophy. The advection speed of friction, derived from the assumption of coherent structures advecting with a Blasius-type boundary layer, aligns with the numerical findings.

We report the unified constitutive law of vibroconvective turbulence in microgravity, i.e. $Nu \sim a^{-1} Re_{os}^\beta$ where the Nusselt number $Nu$ measures the global heat transport, $a$ is the dimensionless vibration amplitude, $Re_{os}$ is the oscillational Reynolds number and $\beta$ is the universal exponent. We find that the dynamics of boundary layers plays an essential role in vibroconvective heat transport and the $Nu$-scaling exponent $\beta$ is determined by the competition between the thermal boundary layer (TBL) and vibration-induced oscillating boundary layer (OBL). Then a physical model is proposed to explain the change of scaling exponent from $\beta =2$ in the TBL-dominant regime to $\beta = 4/3$ in the OBL-dominant regime. Our finding elucidates the emergence of universal constitutive laws in vibroconvective turbulence, and opens up a new avenue for generating a controllable effective heat transport under microgravity or even microfluidic environment in which the gravity effect is nearly absent.

This paper presents a compliant variable admittance adaptive fixed-time sliding mode control (SMC) algorithm for trajectory tracking of robotic manipulators. Specifically, a compliant variable admittance algorithm and an adaptive fixed-time SMC algorithm are combined to construct a double-loop control structure. In the outer loop, the variable admittance algorithm is developed to adjust admittance parameters during a collision to minimize the collision time, which gives the robot compliance property and reduce the rigid collision influence. Then, by employing the Lyapunov theory and the fixed-time stability theory, a new nonsingular sliding mode manifold is proposed and an adaptive fixed-time SMC algorithm is presented in the inner loop. More precisely, this approach enables rapid convergence, enhanced steady-state tracking precision, and a settling time that is independent of system initial states. As a result, the effectiveness and improved performance of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated through extensive simulations and experimental results.

Childhood maltreatment is an established risk factor for psychopathology. However, it remains unclear how childhood traumatic events relate to mental health problems and how the brain is involved. This study examined the serial mediation effect of brain morphological alterations and emotion-/reward-related functions on linking the relationship from maltreatment to depression. We recruited 156 healthy adolescents and young adults and an additional sample of 31 adolescents with major depressive disorder for assessment of childhood maltreatment, depressive symptoms, cognitive reappraisal and anticipatory/consummatory pleasure. Structural MRI data were acquired to identify maltreatment-related cortical and subcortical morphological differences. The mediation models suggested that emotional maltreatment of abuse and neglect, was respectively associated with increased gray matter volume in the ventral striatum and greater thickness in the middle cingulate cortex. These structural alterations were further related to reduced anticipatory pleasure and disrupted cognitive reappraisal, which contributed to more severe depressive symptoms among healthy individuals. The above mediating effects were not replicated in our clinical group partly due to the small sample size. Preventative interventions can target emotional and reward systems to foster resilience and reduce the likelihood of future psychiatric disorders among individuals with a history of maltreatment.

The single ionization and dissociation of ethanol molecules induced by low-energy electrons (E0 = 90 eV) are investigated using multiparticle coincident momentum spectroscopy. By detecting two outgoing electrons (e1 and e2) and one fragment ion in coincidence, we obtain the energy deposition (E0 − E1 − E2) during electron ionization of the molecule, i.e., the binding energy spectra, for production of the different ionic fragments C2H5OH+, C2H4OH+, COH+, and H3O+. These data allow us to study the ionization channels for different ionic products. In particular, we focus on H3O+ as a product of double hydrogen migration. It is found that this channel mainly originates from the ionization of outer-valance orbitals (3a″,10a′, 2a″, 9a′, 8a′, 1a″, and 7a′). Additionally, there are minor contributions from the inner-valence orbitals such as 6a′, 5a′, and 4a′. Quantum chemistry calculations show two fragmentation pathways: concerted and sequential processes for formation of H3O+.

Antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) have been regarded as emerging contaminants that threaten public health worldwide. Poultry excreta, often used as a fertilizer in agriculture, are a major route for the proliferation and dissemination of ARGs in the environment. The aim of the present study was to assess the potential of dietary palygorskite (Plg) supplementation as nutritional manipulation for the modulation of microbial community structure and the attenuation of ARGs in the cecal contents of broilers fed with chlortetracycline (CTC). In total, 256 one-day-old, mixed-sex, broiler chicks were allocated randomly into a 2 × 2 factorial design of four treatments, which consisted of two levels of CTC (0 or 50 mg/kg) and Plg (0 or 10 g/kg). By employing in vivo feeding and slaughter experiments, after collecting the cecal contents and extracting the total genomic DNA, 16S rRNA V3-V4 hypervariable amplicon pyrosequencing and quantitative PCR-based approaches were used to address the impact of Plg on microbiota and the abundance of ARGs in broilers. The results showed that broilers given a diet supplemented with Plg had greater α-diversity indices including Chao1, phylogenetic diversity tree, and observed-species index calculations, when compared with those without Plg supplementation. Birds given a diet supplemented with Plg had fewer Firmicutes at the phylum level, but a greater abundance of Alistipes at the bacterial genus level. Dietary Plg counteracted the CTC-induced increased abundance of ARGs, among which tet(K) had a pronounced decrease, along with a similar decreased tendency for other measured ARGs and intI1. Overall, the results indicated that Plg supplementation caused pronounced changes in cecal microbial diversity and microbiota community composition of broilers, and effectively reduced ARGs, indicating that Plg supplementation is a potential alternative measure for the attenuation of ARGs in the cecal contents of broilers.

The effects of magnetic vortex acceleration (MVA) are investigated with two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations by laser interaction with near-critical density (NCD) plasma inside a hollow conical plasma. Energetic and collimated proton beams can be accelerated by a longitudinal charge-separation field. Energetic protons with a peak energy of 220 MeV are produced in PIC simulations. Compared with a uniform NCD plasma, both the cutoff energy and collimation of proton beams are improved remarkably. Furthermore, the influence of different gap sizes of cone tip is taken into account. For optimizing magnetic vortex acceleration, the gap size of the cone tip is suggested to match the focal spot size of laser pulse.

Zinc (Zn) is widely known as an essential trace element for fish and new ways to supply it to them are needed. Palygorskite (Pal) is a natural silicate clay mineral and the palygorskite structure contains nano-channels, which are filled with water and exchangeable ions. Zn-bearing palygorskites (Zn-Pal) prepared using ion exchange have attracted attention due to the durable antibacterial properties that limit pathogens and as a potential new Zn source for livestock. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Zn-Pal supplementation on the growth performance, nutrient retention, meat quality, Zn accumulation, and intestinal Zn transporter protein gene expression in blunt snout bream Megalobrama amblycephala. The fish were fed a basal diet without an exogenous Zn source and the basal diet was supplemented with 125 mg/kg Zn as Zn sulfate (ZnSO4) or 35, 80, or 125 mg/kg Zn as Zn-Pal. Each diet was tested using three replicates for 7 weeks. The results showed that dietary Zn-Pal supplementation quadratically (P<0.05) increased growth performance, nutrient retention, total and Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase activity, Zn content in scales, and intestinal Zn transporter protein gene expression. The muscular cooking loss in blunt snout bream decreased with the optimum Zn-Pal Zn level of 35 mg/kg. Compared to the fish treated with ZnSO4, the fish supplemented with 35 mg/kg as Zn-Pal exhibited similar growth performance and nutrient retention (P>0.05), increased mRNA expression of the metal-response element-binding transcription factor-1 in the intestine (P<0.05), and decreased cooking loss of muscle (P<0.05).The results suggested that 35 mg/kg Zn supplementation as Zn-Pal could improve the growth performance and body composition, increase nutrient retention and tissue Zn concentrations, enhance the muscle water-holding capacity, and enhance antioxidant status in blunt snout bream. The Zn-Pal was more efficient and could be used as an alternative Zn source to ZnSO4 in the diet of blunt snout bream.

Montmorillonite (Mnt)-based solid acids have a wide range of applications in catalysis and adsorption of pollutants. For such solid acids, the acidic characteristic often plays a significant role in these applications. The objective of the current study was to examine the effects of H3PO4-activation and supporting WO3 on the textural structure and surface acidic properties of Mnt. The Mnt-based solid acid materials were prepared by H3PO4 treatment and an impregnation method with a solution of ammonium metatungstate (AMT) and were examined as catalysts in the dehydration of glycerol to acrolein. The catalysts were characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible (DR UV-Vis) spectroscopy, temperature programmed desorption of NH3 (NH3-TPD), diffuse reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (DR FTIR) spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine, and thermogravimetric (TG) analyses. The phosphoric acid treatment of Mnt created Brönsted and Lewis acid sites and led to increases in specific surface areas, porosity, and acidity. WO3 species influenced total acidity, acid strength, the numbers of Brönsted and Lewis acid sites, and catalytic performances. A high turnover frequency (TOF) value (31.2 h−1) based on a maximal 60.7% yield of acrolein was reached. The correlation of acrolein yield with acidic properties indicated that the cooperative role of Brönsted and Lewis acid sites was beneficial to the formation of acrolein and a little coke deposition (<3.3 wt.%). This work provides a new idea for the design of solid acid catalysts with cooperative Brönsted and Lewis acidity for the dehydration of glycerol.

Zearalenone (ZEA), a common contaminant in food and feedstuffs, threatens human and animal health. The present study aimed to investigate the protective effects of modified palygorskite (MPal), a ZEA-targeted adsorbent, on broilers (young chickens) fed a ZEA-contaminated diet. Broilers were subjected to one of three treatments for a period of 42 days: a basal diet (control group), a ZEA- contaminated diet, and a ZEA-contaminated diet supplemented with 1 g/kg of MPal. Blood was collected for serum metabolite assay, and liver and kidney were sampled to determine ZEA residue and antioxidant-related parameters, using commercial spectrophotometric kits. Compared with the basal diet, the ZEA- contaminated diet resulted in compromised growth performance (reduced daily gain and feed intake during finisher period), disordered relative liver weight (decreased at 21 days but increased at 42 days), increased ZEA residue in liver and kidney, abnormal serum metabolites (decreased total protein content but increased alanine aminotransferase activity at 21 and 42 days, reduced albumin content at 21 days, and elevated aspartate aminotransferase activity at 42 days), and disrupted antioxidant capacities of broilers (increased total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity in liver at 21 and 42 days, decreased T-SOD activity in kidney at 21 and 42 days, and in serum at 42 days, greater malondialdehyde accumulation in liver and kidney at 42 days, and lower glutathione content in kidney at 21 days). The adverse consequences resulting from the ZEA-contaminated diet were relieved by the supplementation of MPal (except albumin concentration in serum and T-SOD activity in liver at 21 days), with the values of growth-performance parameters, liver weight, renal ZEA accumulation, total protein content, transaminase activity at 42 days, and antioxidant indexes being similar to those in the control group. These results suggested that MPal supplementation could promote growth performance, attenuate liver damage, and improve the antioxidant abilities of broilers fed ZEA-contaminated diet by reducing ZEA accumulation.

Fast neutron absorption spectroscopy is widely used in the study of nuclear structure and element analysis. However, due to the traditional neutron source pulse duration being of the order of nanoseconds, it is difficult to obtain a high-resolution absorption spectrum. Thus, we present a method of ultrahigh energy-resolution absorption spectroscopy via a high repetition rate, picosecond duration pulsed neutron source driven by a terawatt laser. The technology of single neutron count is used, which results in easily distinguishing the width of approximately 20 keV at 2 MeV and an asymmetric shape of the neutron absorption peak. The absorption spectroscopy based on a laser neutron source has one order of magnitude higher energy-resolution power than the state-of-the-art traditional neutron sources, which could be of benefit for precisely measuring nuclear structure data.

Interactions between oblique second mode and oblique waves at a high-speed boundary at Mach 4.5 are studied using linear stability theory, nonlinear parabolized stability equations (NPSE) and direct numerical simulation (DNS). Parametric analysis based on the NPSE suggests that the oblique second mode can amplify both the oblique first and second modes, with the former experiencing a higher amplification. Our analysis reveals that the mean-flow distortion and difference mode contribute to this enhancement, with the latter exerting a key influence through the parametric resonance process. Kinetic energy transfer analysis demonstrates that the oblique waves gain energy from the mean flow, rather than from the oblique second mode. Furthermore, we find that the mechanism underlying the interaction between a pair of second oblique waves and a single oblique wave is similar to that between an oblique second mode and an oblique wave, as the steady modes generated by the pair of oblique second modes have a limited impact on the oblique wave. Finally, DNS confirms the validity of two transition paths proposed in this study based on the NPSE results. The first path suggests that a pair of low-amplitude second oblique waves alone are insufficient to cause oblique breakdown, but the introduction of a pair of low-amplitude damping first oblique modes could lead to boundary layer breakdown. The second path involves the formation of a domino-like effect through the combination of different types of oblique waves with the appropriate parameters. These two nonlinear paths can lead to a fully developed turbulent boundary layer.

The physics of leading-edge vortex (LEV) stability on flapping wings and autorotating seeds is still underexplored due to its complex dependency on Reynolds number ($\textit {Re}$), aspect ratio (AR) and Rossby number (Ro). Our previous study observed an interesting dual-stage vortex tilting between radial and tangential components in a stable LEV. Here, the establishment of this novel mechanism, i.e. dual-stage radial–tangential vortex tilting (DS-VT$_{r-t}$), is investigated and explained in detail using numerical methods. The contributions of other tangential vorticity transport terms are also considered. It is shown that the stable LEV region coincides mostly with a constant ratio of tangential and radial vorticity components. The DS-VT$_{r-t}$ mechanism functions as a negative feedback loop for radial vorticity, thereby contributing to the LEV stability at $\textit {Re} > 500$. Specifically, this mechanism involves a dual-stage vortex tilting starting from negative radial component to positive tangential component, and then back to positive radial component, thereby leading to a $180^{\circ }$ reversal of radial vorticity. The radial Coriolis acceleration can also assist the DS-VT$_{r-t}$ by enhancing the tangential vorticity component and the reduction of radial vorticity inside the LEV via the second stage of DS-VT$_{r-t}$. The effects of $\textit {Re}$, AR and Ro on the constant radial–tangential vorticity ratio and DS-VT$_{r-t}$ are then analysed. The coupled effects of AR and Ro are separated into rotational effects and those of tip and root vortices. Our results establish an evident relationship among the LEV stability, the constant radial–tangential vorticity ratio, and the DS-VT$_{r-t}$, thereby deepening the understanding in the vorticity transport of LEV formation and stability.

In order to optimize the performance of the transmission network (TN), this paper introduces the random fractal search algorithm based on the beetle antenna search algorithm, thus proposing the random fractal beetle antenna algorithm (SFBA). The main work of this research is as follows: (1) in the beetle antenna search algorithm, this study used a population of beetles and introduced elite members of the population in order to make the algorithm more stable and to some extent improve the accuracy of its answers. (2) Utilizing the elite reverse learning method and the leader’s multilearning strategy for elites helps to strike a balance between the global exploration and local development of the algorithm. This strategy also further improves the ability of the algorithm to find the optimal solution. (3) Experiments on real experimental data show that the SFBA algorithm proposed in this paper is effective in improving TN performance. In summary, the research content of this paper provides a good reference value for the performance optimization of TN in actual production.

We report that vertical vibration with small amplitude and high frequency can tame convective heat transport in Rayleigh–Bénard convection in a turbulent regime. When vertical vibration is applied, a dynamically averaged ‘anti-gravity’ results that stabilizes the thermal boundary layer and inhibits the eruption of thermal plumes. This eventually leads to the attenuation of the intensity of large-scale mean flow and a significant suppression of turbulent heat transport. Accounting for both the thermally led buoyancy and the vibration-induced anti-gravitational effects, we propose an effective Rayleigh number that helps to extend the Grossmann–Lohse theory to thermal vibrational turbulence. The prediction of the reduction on both the Nusselt and Reynolds numbers obtained by the extended model is found to agree well with the numerical data. In addition, vibrational influences on the mean flow structure and the temporal evolution of Nusselt and Reynolds numbers are investigated. The non-uniform characteristic of vibration-induced ‘anti-gravity’ is discussed. The present findings provide a powerful basis for studying thermal vibrational turbulence and put forward a novel strategy for actively controlling thermal turbulence.

Oblique breakdown in a Mach 2.0 supersonic boundary layer controlled by a local cooling strip with a temperature jump is investigated using direct numerical simulations and linear stability theory. The effect of temperature on the stability of the fundamental oblique waves is first studied by linear stability theory. It is shown that the growth rate of fundamental oblique waves will decrease monotonically as the temperature decreases. However, the results of the direct numerical simulations indicate that transition reversal will occur as the growth rate of the fundamental oblique waves of cooled case becomes faster compared with that of baseline case downstream of the cooling strip. When the cooling strip is in the linear region, the transition is delayed due to the suppression effect of the cooling strip on the fundamental oblique waves. When the cooling strip is located in the early nonlinear region, the fundamental oblique waves will be suppressed by higher spanwise wavenumber steady modes generated by the mutual and self-interaction between the fundamental oblique waves and harmonic modes, which is first called the self-suppression effect (SSE) in the present study. Further research indicated that the meanflow distortion generated by steady modes plays an important role in the SSE. Compared with the stabilization effect of the cooling strip, the SSE is more effective. Moreover, the SSE might provide a new idea on the instability control, as it is observed that the SSE works three times leading to the growth rate of fundamental oblique waves slowing down at three different regions, respectively.

This study analyzes the degree of language balance in three groups of bilingual speakers of Portuguese and German: a group of Portuguese heritage speakers (HSs) living in Germany, another who returned to Portugal, and Portuguese late learners of German L2. Based on the DIALANG vocabulary size placement test, applied in German and in Portuguese, and on extralinguistic variables extracted from a background questionnaire, the results confirm high degrees of unbalanced language dominance favoring the societal language (SL) in HSs without the experience of return, and a leveling of language dominance in returnees. Language balance in returnees is the consequence of some loss of proficiency in the former SL (German) and reactivation of the heritage language (Portuguese). Current relative amount of contact with the two languages is correlated with language dominance only in the HSs and the late L2 speaker groups, whereas age of return and length of residence in Portugal explain language dominance in returnees. Self-reported proficiency is also predictive of language dominance and may be taken as complementary indicator.

In this paper, we report that reversals of the large-scale circulation in two-dimensional Rayleigh–Bénard (RB) convection can be suppressed by imposing sinusoidally distributed heating to the bottom plate. We examine how the frequency of flow reversals depends on the dimensionless wavenumber $k$ of the spatial temperature modulation with various modulation amplitude $A$. For sufficiently large $k$, the flow reversal frequency is close to that in the standard RB convection under uniform heating. However, when $k$ decreases, the frequency of flow reversal gradually becomes lower and can even be largely reduced. Furthermore, we examine the growth of the corner roll and the global flow structure based on Fourier mode decomposition, and reveal that the size of the corner roll diminishes as the wavenumber decreases. The reason is that the regions occupied by the cold phase can absorb heat from the hot plumes and thus lower their temperature, which reduces the corner roll's kinetic energy input provided by the buoyancy force, and weakens the feeding process of the corner rolls. This results in the locking of the corner roll into a smaller region near the corner, making it harder for a reversal to occur. Using the concept of horizontal convection caused by non-uniform heating, we find a relevant parameter $k/A$ to describe briefly how the reversal frequency depends on wavenumber and modulation amplitude. The present work provides a new way to control the flow reversals in RB convection through modifying temperature boundary conditions.
