We perform simulations of a two-fluid–structure interaction problem involving liquid–gas flow past a fully submerged stationary circular cylinder. Interactions between the liquid–gas interface with finite surface tension and flow disturbances arising from the cylinder induce a variety of interfacial phenomena and wake structures. We map different interface regimes in a parameter space defined by the Bond number $Bo \in [100, 5000]$ and the submergence depth $h/D \in [1, 2.5]$ of the cylinder while keeping the Reynolds (Re) and Weber (We) numbers fixed at 150 and 1000, respectively. The emerging interface features are classified into three distinct regimes: interfacial waves generated by Strouhal vortices, the entrainment of multi-scale gas bubbles and the reduced deformation state. In the interfacial wave regime, we demonstrate that the frequency of transverse interface fluctuations at a specific streamwise location is identical to the vortex shedding frequency. Additionally, the wavelength of interfacial waves is determined by the size of vortex pairs consisting of alternating Strouhal vortices. In the gas entrainment regime at $ Bo = 1000$, our bubble-size distributions reveal that the entrained bubbles have sizes ranging from one to two orders of magnitude smaller than the cylinder. These multi-scale bubbles are formed primarily through plunging and surfing breakers at $h/D = 2.5$. In contrast, at $h/D = 1$, smaller bubbles initially emerge from the breakup of a gas finger. Over time, some of these bubbles grow in size through coalescence cascades. The influence of $ Re \in [50, 150]$ and $ We \in [700, 1100]$ on gas entrainment is quantified in terms of mean bubble size and count. Lastly, we demonstrate how the deformability of the liquid–gas interface drives the hydrodynamic lift force acting on the cylinder. The net downward lift materializes only in the gas entrainment and reduced deformation regimes due to the broken symmetry of the front stagnation point. While our study focuses on two-dimensional simulations, we also provide insights into the three-dimensional gas entrainment mechanism for one of the extreme cases at $h/D = 1$.

In this study, we conducted interface-capturing high-resolution simulations of a bubbly upflow in a vertical channel to investigate the bubble distribution and its interaction with surrounding turbulence, focusing on the effects of the density ratio. A bulk Reynolds number $Re_b=2300$ was used for all simulations. The influence of density ratio on vortex structures and turbulence statistics differed between the near-wall and core regions of the channel. Adding 5.43 $\%$ gas caused an increase in wall friction. By applying a generalised FIK identity to analyse wall friction, it was determined that the drag rise in the bubbly channel was mostly due to the near-wall region. Visualisation of the bubble and vortex structures showed that small bubbles near the wall induced larger magnitude of Reynolds shear stress and increased wall friction. Bubble behaviour near the wall region was similar for density ratios above 30, leading to wall friction saturation. In the core region, large deformable bubbles created wake vortices due to slip velocity between liquid and gas phases. Wake vortices help large bubbles absorb smaller bubbles and maintain their sizes. As the density ratio increased, the slip velocity increased owing to greater difference in the gravitational acceleration between liquid and gas phases, resulting in corresponding increase in wake intensity and velocity fluctuations. However, quadrant analysis showed that Q1 and Q3 events increased together with Q2 and Q4 events in the core region, cancelling out any net effect of wake vortices on Reynolds shear stress or wall friction.

Linear non-modal analyses are performed to study the mechanism of how deformable free surfaces influence very-large-scale motions (VLSMs) in turbulent open channel flows. The mean velocity and eddy viscosity profiles obtained from direct numerical simulations are used in the generalised Orr–Sommerfeld and Squire equations to represent background turbulence effects. Solutions of surface-wave eigenmodes and shear eigenmodes are obtained. The results indicate that at high Froude numbers, free surfaces enhance the maximum transient growth rate of VLSMs through surface-wave eigenmodes. We then analyse the energy budget equation to reveal the underlying mechanism. For streamwise-uniform motions, the energy growth rate is enhanced by an energy production term associated with the correlation between the streamwise velocity, which is generated by the lifting-up effect of streamwise vortices composed of shear eigenmodes, and the vertical velocity, which is induced by a spanwise standing wave composed of surface-wave eigenmodes. For streamwise-varying motions, the energy growth rate is enhanced by a standing wave moving with a pair of vortices that travel at a speed approximately equal to the projection of the mean surface velocity along the wavenumber vector direction. Finally, an analytical expression of the energy production term is derived to provide the initial conditions for the maximum transient growth and explain the weak free-surface effect observed at large spanwise wavenumbers and low Froude numbers. The results demonstrate a linear non-modal mechanism in interactions between free surfaces and VLSMs in open channel flows.

In nature and engineering applications, water jet plunging acts as a key process causing interface breaking and generating mixed-phase turbulence. In this paper, high-resolution numerical simulations of the plunging of a water jet into a quiescent pool were performed to investigate the statistical properties of mixed-phase turbulence, with a special focus on the closure problem of the Reynolds-averaged equation. We conducted phase-resolved simulations, with the air–water interface captured using a coupled level-set and volume-of-fluid method. Various cases were performed to analyse the effects of the Froude number and Reynolds number. The simulation results showed that the turbulence statistics are insensitive to the Reynolds number under investigation, while the Froude number influences the flow properties significantly. To investigate the closure problem of the mean momentum equation, the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and turbulent mass flux (TMF) and their transport equations were analysed further. It was discovered that the balance relationship of the TKE budget terms remained similar to many single-phase turbulent flows. The TMF is an additional unclosed term in mixed-phase turbulence over the single-phase turbulence. Our simulation results showed that the production term in its transport equation was highly correlated to TKE. Based on this finding, a closure model for the production term of TMF was further proposed.

In neutrally stratified shallow water, full-depth Langmuir cells (LCs) can interact with the turbulent benthic boundary layer and, thus, influence bottom wall shear stresses. In this paper the impacts of full-depth LCs on the streamwise and spanwise wall shear stresses are systematically studied using the database obtained from wall-resolved large-eddy simulation of shallow-water Langmuir turbulence. Analyses focus on the instantaneous wall shear stress fluctuations and the joint probability density functions between the stress fluctuations and the LCs parts of the velocity fluctuations, which show that the linear superimposition effect and nonlinear modulation effect of LCs are responsible for the spanwise organized distribution of wall shear stress fluctuations. Compared with the statistics in pure shear-driven turbulence without LCs, the mean square values of wall shear stress fluctuations in shallow-water Langmuir turbulence are enhanced by the strong linear superimposition effect of LCs, while the skewness and kurtosis are reduced by the combination of the linear superimposition effect and nonlinear modulation effect of LCs. Based on the scalings of these effects, a new predictive model of wall shear stress fluctuations is proposed for shallow-water Langmuir turbulence. The proposed model can predict the spatial distribution and statistics of wall shear stress fluctuations using the LCs parts of velocity fluctuations measured above the water bottom. Owing to the persistence of the spanwise inhomogeneity of wall shear stresses induced by full-depth LCs, the new predictive model will be useful for improving the wall-layer modelling for shallow-water Langmuir turbulent flows.

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent channel flows up to ${Re}_{\tau} \approx 1000$ are conducted to investigate the three-dimensional (consisting of streamwise wavenumber, spanwise wavenumber and frequency) spectrum of wall pressure fluctuations. To develop a predictive model of the wavenumber–frequency spectrum from the wavenumber spectrum, the time decorrelation mechanisms of wall pressure fluctuations are investigated. It is discovered that the energy-containing part of the wavenumber–frequency spectrum of wall pressure fluctuations can be well predicted using a similar random sweeping model for streamwise velocity fluctuations. To refine the investigation, we further decompose the spectrum of the total wall pressure fluctuations into the autospectra of rapid and slow pressure fluctuations, and the cross-spectrum between them. We focus on evaluating the assumption applied in many predictive models, that is, the magnitude of the cross-spectrum is negligibly small. The present DNS shows that neglecting the cross-spectrum causes a maximum error up to 4.7 dB in the subconvective region for all Reynolds numbers under test. Our analyses indicate that the approximation of neglecting the cross-spectrum needs to be applied carefully in the investigations of acoustics at low Mach numbers, in which the subconvective components of wall pressure fluctuations make important contributions to the radiated acoustic power.

Based on a substrate integrated lens (SIL), a compact line source generator (LSG) for feeding continuous transverse stub (CTS) arrays with linear-polarized (LP) beam scanning and dual-polarized (DP) operations is presented in this paper. The SIL consists of metamaterial cells with different sizes being arranged as concentric annulus and is printed on the center surface of two substrate layers. The SIL can convert the cylindrical wave generated by the feed probe of SIW-horn to the planar wave for feeding the CTS array. This rotationally symmetric SIL can be used conveniently to design LSG for feeding CTS arrays with the continuous beam scanning and DP operations, which has been verified by the fabrications and measurements. By simply rotating the SIW-horn along the edge of SIL, the 10-element LP-CTS array obtains a measured beam scanning range of ±35° with the highest gain of 20.6 dBi. By setting two orthogonal SIW-horns at the edge of the proposed SIL, the nine-element DP-CTS array with orthogonal radiation stubs is excited. The DP array obtains the gain of 20.3 dBi at the center frequency with the isolation of 28 dB and the cross-polarization level <−25 dB.

Separating and reattaching turbulent flows induced by a forward-facing step subjected to an incoming fully developed turbulent channel flow are studied using direct numerical simulation. The step height is one quarter of the channel height, and the Reynolds number based on friction velocity and half-channel height at the inlet is 180. The three-dimensional spatio-temporal characteristics of separation bubbles upstream and downstream of the step are analysed with particular attention to the effects of impinging hairpin structures and the topology of principal stretching. Immediately upstream of the step, the fluctuating vorticity parallel to the mean streamlines is significant. On the frontal surface of the step, strong spanwise skin friction appears in the form of alternating positive and negative values in vertical strips. Over the step, the principal stretching switches orientation along a curve emanating from the leading edge, which is termed the principal stretching line (PSL). The reverse flows upstream and downstream of the step possess dominant and harmonic frequencies that mirror those of the incoming flow. As a hairpin structure leans over the step, the associated vorticity is deformed by the principal stretching. Specifically, PSL marks the lower bound of the deformed hairpin legs, and an opposite-signed pair of counter-rotating quasi-streamwise vortices are induced near the top surface of the step. Consequently, the separation bubbles upstream of and over the step are enlarged and suppressed, respectively. For a sufficiently strong hairpin structure interacting with the step, an open-type separation occurs upstream of the step, while dual separation bubbles appear over the step.

Detecting the turbulent/non-turbulent interface is a challenging topic in turbulence research. In the present study, machine learning methods are used to train detectors for identifying turbulent regions in the flow past a circular cylinder. To ensure that the turbulent/non-turbulent interface is independent of the reference frame of coordinates and is physics-informed, we propose to use invariants of tensors appearing in the transport equations of velocity fluctuations, strain-rate tensor and vortical tensor as the input features to identify the flow state. The training samples are chosen from numerical simulation data at two Reynolds numbers, $Re=100$ and 3900. Extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) is utilized to train the detector, and after training, the detector is applied to identify the flow state at each point of the flow field. The trained detector is found robust in various tests, including the applications to the entire fields at successive snapshots and at a higher Reynolds number $Re=5000$. The objectivity of the detector is verified by changing the input features and the flow region for choosing the turbulent training samples. Compared with the conventional methods, the proposed method based on machine learning shows its novelty in two aspects. First, no threshold value needs to be specified explicitly by the users. Second, machine learning can treat multiple input variables, which reflect different properties of turbulent flows, including the unsteadiness, vortex stretching and three-dimensionality. Owing to these advantages, XGBoost generates a detector that is more robust than those obtained from conventional methods.

Wall-resolved and wall-modelled large-eddy simulations are performed to study the localizing effect of Langmuir cells (LCs) on small-scale background turbulence in shallow water. The total velocity fluctuations are decomposed into an LC content extracted by streamwise averaging and a background turbulence part. Based on the large-scale motions of LCs, the spanwise domain is divided into three regions dominated by the upwelling, spanwise and downwelling flows of LCs, respectively. The localized Reynolds stresses $\langle u_{i}^{T}u_{j}^{T}\rangle _{xt}$ in different spanwise regions are compared to show the localizing effects of the LCs on the background turbulence quantitatively, where $u_{1}^{T}$ (or $u^{T}$), $u_{2}^{T}$ (or $v^{T}$) and $u_{3}^{T}$ (or $w^{T}$) represent the streamwise, vertical and spanwise components of the background turbulence velocity, respectively, and $\langle \cdot \rangle _{xt}$ denotes time and streamwise averaging. It is shown that the magnitudes of the localized Reynolds stresses in different spanwise regions vary significantly. The transport equations of the localized Reynolds stresses are then analysed to investigate the mechanisms underlying the localizing effects. It is discovered that the difference in the energy production correlated to the shear of the LC content among different regions is the key factor that leads to the localization of background turbulence. In addition, the energy production correlated to the shear of the mean flow, the energy redistribution due to the pressure–strain correlation, and the interaction between the localized Reynolds stresses and the shear of the Stokes drift also play important roles. Based on the results obtained from the analysis of the transport equations, predictive models are proposed for the localizing effects, which assess the spatial dependence of the Boussinesq model for background turbulence in coastal Langmuir turbulence. These models show good scaling performance of $\langle u^{T}u^{T}\rangle _{xt}$ near the water bottom and of $\langle -u^{T}v^{T}\rangle _{xt}$, $\langle -u^{T}w^{T}\rangle _{xt}$ and $\langle -v^{T}w^{T}\rangle _{xt}$ in the central region of the water column under various flow conditions with different values of the Reynolds number, turbulent Langmuir number and wavenumber.

Langmuir circulations (LCs) generated by the interaction between wind-driven currents and surface waves can engulf the whole water column in neutrally stratified shallow water and interact with the turbulence in the bottom boundary layer. In this study, we perform a mechanistic study using wall-resolved large-eddy simulations (LES) based on the Craik–Leibovich equations to investigate the effects of LCs on turbulence statistics in the bottom half of shallow water. The highest Reynolds number considered in this paper, $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}=1000$, is larger than the values considered in wall-resolved LES studies of shallow-water Langmuir turbulence reported in literature. The logarithmic layer is diagnosed based on a plateau region in the profile of a diagnostic function. It is found that the logarithmic layer disrupted at $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}=395$ reappears at $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}=1000$, but the von Kármán constant is slightly different from the traditional value $0.41$. To study the effects of LCs on turbulence statistics, LCs are extracted using streamwise averaging. The velocity fluctuations $u_{i}^{\prime }$ are decomposed into a LC-coherent part $u_{i}^{L}$ and a residual turbulence part $u_{i}^{T}$. It is found that the profiles of LC-coherent Reynolds shear stress $-\langle u^{L}v^{L}\rangle$ obtained at various Reynolds numbers are close to each other in the water-column coordinate $y/h$, with $h$ being the half-water depth. As the Reynolds number (or, by definition, the ratio between the outer and inner length scales) increases, the influence of LCs on the near-bottom momentum transfer is reduced, which is responsible for the reappearance of the logarithmic layer. At all of the Reynolds numbers under investigation, the peaks of $\langle u^{L}u^{L}\rangle$ are collocated in the water-column coordinate $y/h$, while those of $\langle u^{T}u^{T}\rangle$ are collocated in the inner-scale coordinate $y/(\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}/u_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}})$. Due to the increase in the distance between the peaks of $\langle u^{L}u^{L}\rangle$ and $\langle u^{T}u^{T}\rangle$ with the Reynolds number, the profile of $\langle u^{\prime }u^{\prime }\rangle$ forms a bimodal shape at $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}=700$ and $1000$.

We study wind turbulence over breaking waves based on direct numerical simulation (DNS) of two-fluid flows. In the DNS, the air and water are simulated as a coherent system, with the interface captured using the coupled level-set and volume-of-fluid method. Because the wave breaking is an unsteady process, we use ensemble averaging over 100 runs to define turbulence statistics. We focus on analysing the turbulence statistics of the airflow over breaking waves. The effects of wave age and wave steepness are investigated. It is found that before wave breaking, the turbulence statistics are largely influenced by the wave age. The vertical gradient of mean streamwise velocity is positive at small and intermediate wave ages, but it becomes negative near the wave surface at large wave age as the pressure force changes from drag to thrust. Furthermore, wave-coherent motions make increasingly important contributions to the momentum flux and kinetic energy of velocity fluctuations (KE-F) as the wave age increases. During the wave breaking process, spilling breakers do not influence the wind field significantly; in contrast, plunging breakers alter the structures of wind turbulence near the wave surface drastically. It is observed from the DNS results that during wave plunging, a high pressure region occurs ahead of the wave front, which further accelerates the wind in the downstream direction. Meanwhile, a large spanwise vortex is generated, which greatly disturbs the airflow around it, resulting in large magnitudes of Reynolds stress and turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) below the wave crest. Above the crest, the magnitude of KE-F is enhanced during wave plunging at small and large wave ages, but at intermediate wave age, the transient enhancement of KE-F is absent. The effect of wave breaking on the magnitude of KE-F is further investigated through the analysis of the KE-F production. It is discovered that at small wave age, the transient enhancement of KE-F is caused by the appearance of a local maximum in the profile of total momentum flux; but at large wave age, it results from the change in the sign of the KE-F production from negative to positive, due to the sign change in the wave-coherent momentum flux. At intermediate wave age, neither of these two processes is present, and the transient growth of KE-F does not take place.

In this paper, we study the scales and dynamics of Taylor–Görtler (TG) vortices in streamwise-rotating turbulent channel flows at moderate and high rotation numbers ($Ro_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}=7.5$, 15, 30, 75 and 150) with a fixed Reynolds number. In order to precisely capture TG vortices in the streamwise and spanwise directions, direct numerical simulations have been performed on 15 test cases of different domain sizes and rotation numbers. A two-layer pattern of TG vortices is identified, and the characteristic length scales of TG vortices are quantified using the premultiplied energy spectra. It is observed that as the rotation number increases, the spanwise scale of TG vortices remains stable but the streamwise scale increases rapidly. Three criteria have been used for judging a domain-size-independent solution in both physical and spectral spaces. The weakest criterion ensures accurate predictions of the first- and second-order statistical moments of the velocity, which requires a minimum streamwise domain size of $L_{1}=64\unicode[STIX]{x03C0}h$, where $h$ is one-half the channel height. However, the streamwise domain size needs to be stretched drastically to $L_{1}=512\unicode[STIX]{x03C0}h$ if the most stringent criterion is considered, which demands that all energetic eddies be fully captured based on a predefined threshold value (i.e. $12.5\,\%$ of the peak value) of the premultiplied two-dimensional energy spectrum. The effects of streamwise system rotation on the scales and dynamics of TG vortices are investigated by comparing the statistical results of rotating and non-rotating channel flows, and through the analysis of two-point correlations, premultiplied energy spectra, and budget balance of turbulent stresses.

In this paper, the geometrical properties of the subgrid-scale (SGS) stress tensor are investigated through its eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The concepts of Euler rotation angle and axis are utilized to investigate the relative rotation of the eigenframe of the SGS stress tensor with respect to that of the resolved strain rate tensor. Both Euler rotation angle and axis are natural invariants of the rotation matrix, which uniquely describe the topological relation between the eigenframes of these two tensors. Different from the reference frame fixed to a rigid body, the eigenframe of a tensor consists of three orthonormal eigenvectors, which by their nature are subjected to directional aliasing. In order to describe the geometric relationship between the SGS stress and resolved strain rate tensors, an effective method is proposed to uniquely determine the topology of the eigenframes. The proposed method has been used for testing three SGS stress models in the context of homogeneous isotropic turbulence at three Reynolds numbers, using both a priori and a posteriori approaches.
