It is widely believed that statistical closure theories for dynamical systems provide statistics equivalent to those of the governing dynamical equations from which the former are derived. Here, we demonstrate counterexamples in the context of the widely used mean-field quasi-linear approximation applied to both deterministic and stochastic two-dimensional fluid dynamical systems. We compare statistics of numerical simulations of a quasi-linear model (QL) with statistics obtained by direct statistical simulation via a cumulant expansion closed at second order (CE2). We observe that although CE2 is an exact statistical closure for QL dynamics, its predictions can disagree with the statistics of the QL solution for identical parameter values. These disagreements are attributed to instabilities, which we term rank instabilities, of the second cumulant dynamics within CE2 that are unavailable in the QL equations.

In recent years, the generalised quasilinear (GQL) approximation has been developed and its efficacy tested against purely quasilinear (QL) approximations. GQL systematically interpolates between QL and fully nonlinear dynamics by employing a generalised Reynolds decomposition. Here, we examine an exact statistical closure for the GQL equations on the doubly periodic $\beta$-plane. Closure is achieved at second order using a generalised cumulant approach which we term GCE2. GCE2 is shown to yield improved performance over statistical representations of purely QL dynamics (CE2) and thus enables direct statistical simulation of complex mean flows that do not entirely fall within the remit of pure QL theory. Despite the existence of an exact closure, GCE2 like CE2 admits the possibility of a rank instability that leads to differences with statistics obtained from GQL. Recognition of this instability is a necessary step before further progress can be made with the GCE2 statistical closure.

The spherical Couette system consists of two differentially rotating concentric spheres with the space in between filled with fluid. We study a regime where the outer sphere is rotating rapidly enough so that the Coriolis force is important and the inner sphere is rotating either slower or in the opposite direction with respect to the outer sphere. We numerically study the sudden transition to turbulence at a critical differential rotation seen in experiments at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, Germany, and investigate its cause. We find that the source of turbulence is the boundary layer on the inner sphere, which becomes centrifugally unstable. We show that this instability leads to generation of small-scale structures which lead to turbulence in the bulk, dominated by inertial waves, a change in the force balance near the inner boundary, the formation of a mean flow through Reynolds stresses and, consequently, to an efficient angular momentum transport. We compare our findings with axisymmetric simulations and show that there are significant similarities in the nature of the flow in the turbulent regimes of full three-dimensional and axisymmetric simulations but differences in the evolution of the instability that leads to this transition. We find that a heuristic argument based on a Reynolds number defined using the thickness of the boundary layer as a length scale helps explain the scaling law of the variation of critical differential rotation for transition to turbulence with rotation rate observed in the experiments.

This paper investigates the amplification and propagation of swirl fluctuations in turbulent swirling flows using resolvent analysis. Swirl fluctuations have been repeatedly observed in acoustically excited swirl flows and play a significant role in triggering thermoacoustic instabilities in swirl-stabilized flames. While recent research on simplified rotating laminar base flows suggests that the linear inertial-wave mechanism is a key driver of swirl fluctuations, it remains unclear whether this applies to the fully turbulent regime and whether a linear method is sufficient for modelling. To address this issue, a turbulent swirling pipe flow is considered using large-eddy simulations and phase-locked particle image velocimetry, which are combined with mean-field resolvent analysis. A sound agreement between the empirical and physics-based modes is found in terms of shape and propagation velocity. The latter is particularly important for thermoacoustic time-lag models. The comparison with a generic rotating pipe flow shows that the observed swirl fluctuations are indeed driven by a linear inertial wave mechanism. The resolvent framework is, then, exploited to further investigate the coupling and amplification mechanisms in detail. It is discovered that the combined effects of inertia and strong shear lead to very high amplification rates of the swirl fluctuations, explaining the high potential of these structures to trigger combustion instabilities. The study further demonstrates the capability of the resolvent to reveal the driving mechanisms of flow response structures in highly complex turbulent flows, and it opens the path for efficient physics-based optimization to prevent combustion instabilities.

Turbulent flow induced by elastorotational instability in viscoelastic Taylor–Couette flow (TCF) with Keplerian rotation is analogous to a turbulent accretion disk destabilized by magnetorotational instability. We examine this novel viscoelastic Keplerian turbulence via direct numerical simulations (DNS) for the shear Reynolds number ($Re$) ranging from $10^2$ to $10^4$. The observed characteristic flow structure consists of penetrating streamwise vortices with axial length scales much smaller than the gap width, distinct from the classic centrifugally induced Taylor vortices, which have axial lengths of the gap width. These intriguing vortices persist for the wide $Re$ range considered and give rise to intriguing scaling behaviour in key flow quantities. Specifically, the characteristic axial length of the penetrating vortices is shown to scale as $Re^{-0.22}$; the angular momentum transport scales as $Re^{0.42}$; the kinetic and elastic boundary-layer thicknesses based on angular velocity and hoop stress near the inner cylinder wall scale as $Re^{-0.48}$ and $Re^{-0.49}$, respectively. This implies that the viscoelastic Keplerian turbulence belongs to the classical turbulent regime of TCF with the Prandtl–Blasius-type boundary layer. Furthermore, we present an analytical relation between the viscous and elastic dissipation rates of kinetic energy and the angular momentum transport and in turn demonstrate its validity using our DNS data. This study has paved the way for future research to explore astrophysics-related Keplerian turbulence and angular momentum transport via the scaling relations of the analogous TCF of dilute polymeric solutions.

Turbulent circular pipe flows subjected to axial system rotation are studied using direct numerical simulations (DNS) for a wide range of rotation numbers of $Ro_b = 0\unicode{x2013}20$ at a fixed Reynolds number. To ensure that energetic turbulent eddy motions are captured at high rotation numbers, long pipes up to $L_z = 180{\rm \pi} R$ are used in DNS. Two types of energy-containing flow structures have been observed. The first type is hairpin structures that are characteristic of the turbulent boundary layer developing over the pipe wall for both non-rotating and axially rotating flows. The second type is Taylor columns forming at moderate and high rotation numbers. Based on the study of two-point autocorrelation coefficients, it is observed that Taylor columns exhibit quasi-periods in both axial and azimuthal directions. According to the premultiplied spectra, Taylor columns feature one single characteristic axial length scale at the moderate rotation numbers but two at high rotation numbers. It is discovered that the axial system rotation suppresses the sweep events systematically and impedes the formation of hairpin structures. As the rotation number is increased, the turbulence kinetic energy held by Taylor columns enhances rapidly associated with significant increases in their axial length scales.

Non-helical turbulence within a linear shear flow has demonstrated efficient amplification of large-scale magnetic fields in numerical simulations, but its precise mechanism remains elusive. The incoherent $\alpha$ mechanism proposes that a zero-mean fluctuating transport coefficient $\alpha$ (linked to kinetic helicity) in the shear flow is a candidate driver. Previous renovating-flow models have proposed that the correlation time of helicity fluctuations must be sufficiently extended to overcome turbulent magnetic diffusivity, yet only empirical validation of this concept has been obtained. In this study, we conduct direct numerical simulations of weakly compressible non-helical hydrodynamic turbulence. We scrutinize the correlation times of velocity and kinetic helicity fluctuations in distinct flow configurations, including rotation, shearing and Keplerian flows, as well as the shearing burgulence counterpart. Our findings indicate that rotation contributes to a prolonged correlation time of helicity compared with velocity, particularly notable in auto-correlations of both volume-averaged quantities and individual Fourier modes due to the formation of large-scale vortices. In contrast, moderate shear strength does not exhibit significant scale separation, with shear flows elongating vortices in the shear direction. Shearing burgulence, characterized by shorter helicity correlation times, appears less conducive to hosting the incoherent $\alpha$ effect. Notably, at modest shear rates, only Keplerian flows exhibit sufficiently coherent helicity fluctuations, in contrast to shearing flows. However, the relative strength of helicity fluctuations compared with turbulent diffusivity is significantly lower, raising doubts about the viability of the incoherent $\alpha$ effect as a potential dynamo driver in the subsonic flows examined in this study.

Direct numerical simulations of spanwise-rotating turbulent channel flow with a parabolic bump on the bottom wall are employed to investigate the effects of rotation on flow separation. Four rotation rates, $Ro_b := 2\varOmega H/U_b = \pm 0.42$, $\pm$1.0, are compared with the non-rotating scenario. The mild adverse pressure gradient induced by the lee side of the bump allows for a variable pressure-induced separation. The separation region is reduced (increased) when the bump is on the anti-cyclonic (cyclonic) side of the channel, compared with the non-rotating separation. The total drag is reduced in all rotating cases. Through several mechanisms, rotation alters the onset of separation, reattachment and wake recovery. The mean momentum deficit is found to be the key. A physical interpretation of the ratio between the system rotation and mean shear vorticity, $S:=\varOmega /\varOmega _s$, provides the mechanisms regarding stability thresholds $S=-0.5$ and $-$1. The rotation effects are explained accordingly, with reference to the dynamics of several flow structures. For anti-cyclonic separation, particularly, the interaction between the Taylor–Görtler vortices and hairpin vortices of wall-bounded turbulence is proven to be responsible for the breakdown of the separating shear layer. A generalized argument is made regarding the essential role of near-wall deceleration and resultant ejection of enhanced hairpin vortices in destabilizing an anti-cyclonic flow. This mechanism is anticipated to have broad impacts on other applications in analogy to rotating shear flows, such as thermal convection and boundary layers over concave walls.

The analysis of Scott (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 741, 2014, pp. 316–349) is implemented numerically. Decaying turbulence is confined to a channel between two infinite, parallel, rotating walls. The Rossby and Ekman numbers are supposed small, the former condition making nonlinearity small, while the latter allows the turbulence to persist for the many rotational periods needed for the small nonlinearity to be effective. The flow is expressed as a combination of inertial waveguide modes, indexed by a two-dimensional wave vector $\boldsymbol{k}$ and an integer n. The $n = 0$ modes form a two-dimensional component of the flow, whereas the remainder is the wave component, on which attention is focused in this article. Assuming statistical axisymmetry and homogeneity in directions parallel to the walls, the second-order moments of the mode amplitudes yield a spectral matrix ${A_{nm}}(k,t)$ (where $k = |\boldsymbol{k} |$), of which the diagonal elements describe the distribution of energy over different modes. Wave-turbulence analysis provides an equation governing the time evolution of ${A_{nn}}$, $n \ne 0$, the wave spectra, which forms the basis for the present work. The initial distribution of energy is Gaussian and depends on a parameter $\varXi$, the initial spectral width. The problem has two other parameters, ${\beta _w}$ and ${\beta _v}$, which correspond to two distinct viscous dissipative mechanisms: wall damping due to boundary layers and volumetric damping by viscous effects throughout the flow. Results obtained by numerical solution include the time evolution of the total wave energy, E, and the detailed description of its distribution over k and n provided by ${A_{nn}}(k)$.

The orientation dynamics of inertialess prolate and oblate spheroidal particles in a directly simulated spanwise-rotating turbulent channel flow has been investigated by means of an Eulerian–Lagrangian point-particle approach. The channel rotation and the particle shape were parameterized using a rotation number Ro and the aspect ratio λ, respectively. Eleven particle shapes 0.05 ≤ λ ≤ 20 and four rotation rates 0 ≤ Ro ≤ 10 have been examined. The spheroidal particles retained their almost isotropic orientation in the core region of the channel, despite the significant mean shear rate set up by the Coriolis force. Irrespective of channel rotation rate Ro, rod-like spheroids tend to align in the streamwise direction, while disk-like particles are oriented in the wall-normal direction. These trends were accentuated with increasing departure from sphericity λ = 1. The changeover from the isotropic orientation mode in the centre to the highly anisotropic near-wall orientation mode commenced further away from the suction-side wall with increasing Ro, whereas the particle orientations on the pressure side of the rotating channel remained essentially unaffected by Ro. We observed that the alignments of the fluid rotation vector with the Lagrangian stretching direction were similarly unaffected by the imposed system rotation, except that the de-alignment set in deeper into the core at high Ro. This contrasts with the well-known substantial impact of system rotation on the velocity and vorticity fields. Similarly, slender rods and flatter disks were aligned with the Lagrangian stretching and compression directions, respectively, for all Ro considered, except in the vicinity of the walls. The typical near-wall de-alignment extended considerably further away from the suction-side wall at high Ro. We conjecture that this phenomenon reflects a change in the relative importance of mean shear and small-scale turbulence caused by the Coriolis force. Preferential particle alignment with Lagrangian stretching and compression directions are known from isotropic and anisotropic turbulence in inertial reference systems. The present results demonstrate the validity of this principle also in a non-inertial system.

Rayleigh–Bénard convection in a rotating spherical shell provides a simplified model for convective dynamics of planetary and stellar interiors. Over the past decades, the problem has been studied extensively via numerical simulations, but most previous simulations set the Prandtl number $Pr$ to unity. In this study we build more than 200 numerical models of rotating convection in a spherical shell over a wide range of $Pr$ ($10^{-2}\le Pr \le 10^2$). By increasing the Rayleigh number $Ra$, we characterise four different flow regimes, starting from the linear onset to multiple modes, then transitioning to the geostrophic turbulence and eventually approaching the weakly rotating regime. In the multiple modes regime, we show evidence of triadic resonances in numerical models with different $Pr$, which may provide a generic mechanism for the transition from laminar to turbulence in rotating convection. We analyse scaling behaviours of the heat transfer and convective flow speeds in numerical simulations, paying particular attention to the $Pr$ dependence. We find that the so-called diffusion-free scaling for the heat transfer cannot reconcile all numerical models with different $Pr$ in the geostrophic turbulence regime. However, the characteristic flow speeds at different $Pr$ roughly follow a unified scaling that can be described by visco-Archimedean–Coriolis force balances, though the scaling tends to approach the Coriolis-inertial-Archimedean force balance at low $Pr$. We also show that transition behaviours from rotating to non-rotating convection depend on $Pr$. The transition criteria based on heat transfer and flow morphology would be rather different when $Pr>1$, but the two criteria are consistent for cases with $Pr\le 1$. Both scaling behaviours and transition behaviours suggest that the heat transfer is controlled by the boundary layers while the convective flow speeds are mainly determined by the force balance in the bulk for cases with $Pr>1$, which is in line with recent experimental results with moderate to high $Pr$. For cases with $Pr \le 1$, both the heat transfer and convective velocities are approaching the inviscid dynamics in the bulk. We also briefly analysed the magnitude and scaling of zonal flows at different $Pr$, showing that the zonal flow amplitude rapidly increases as $Pr$ decreases.

Time-resolved two-dimensional two-component particle image velocimetry measurements with high spatial resolution are carried out in a water tank agitated by four blades rotating at constant speed. Different blade geometries and rotation speeds are tested for the purpose of modifying turbulent flow conditions. In all cases where no baffles are used to break the rotation, the Zeman length is an order of magnitude smaller than the Taylor length. Compared with the cases with baffles which break the rotation, in the unbaffled cases turbulence production and/or mean advection are significant and the turbulence nonlinearity is dramatically reduced for the horizontal (i.e. normal to the axis of rotation) two-point turbulence fluctuating velocities. This nonlinearity reduction is manifest not only in the interscale turbulent energy transfer but also in the interspace turbulent energy transfer, which nearly vanishes. However, the nonlinearity is not reduced for the vertical two-point turbulence fluctuating velocities: the corresponding interscale turbulent transfer rate is in fact intensified, and its dependence on the two-point separation distance, as well as that of the corresponding interspace turbulent transfer rate, which does not vanish, is significantly modified. Even though non-homogeneities are very different for different blades and rotation speeds in the unbaffled cases, the horizontal fluctuating velocity's second-order structure function collapses with scalings which resemble predictions for homogeneous turbulence subject to strong rotation. The vertical fluctuating velocity's second-order structure function does not collapse for different blade geometries by neither these nor the Kolmogorov predictions.

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of rotating pipe flows up to $Re_\tau \approx 3000$ is carried out to investigate drag reduction effects associated with axial rotation, extending previous studies carried out at a modest Reynolds number (Orlandi & Fatica, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 343, 1997, pp. 43–72; Orlandi & Ebstein, Intl J. Heat Fluid Flow, vol. 21, 2000, pp. 499–505). The results show that the drag reduction, which we theoretically show to be equivalent to net power saving assuming no mechanical losses, monotonically increases as either the Reynolds number or the rotation number increases, proportionally to the inner-scaled rotational speed. Net drag reduction up to approximately $70\,\%$ is observed, while being far from flow relaminarisation. Scaling laws for the mean axial and azimuthal velocity are proposed, from which a predictive formula for the friction factor is derived. The formula can correctly represent the dependency of the friction factor on the Reynolds and rotation numbers, maintaining good accuracy for low-to-moderate rotation numbers. Examination of the turbulent structures highlights the role of rotation in widening and elongating the small-scale streaks, with subsequent suppression of sweeps and ejections. In the core part of the flow, clear weakening of large-scale turbulent motions is observed at high Reynolds numbers, with subsequent suppression of the outer-layer peak in the pre-multiplied spectra. The Fukagata–Iwamoto–Kasagi decomposition indicates that, consistent with a theoretically derived formula, the outer layer yields the largest contribution to drag reduction at increasingly high Reynolds numbers. In contrast, both the inner and the outer layers contribute to drag reduction as the rotation number increases.

The synchronisation between rotating turbulent flows in periodic boxes is investigated numerically. The flows are coupled via a master–slave coupling, taking the Fourier modes with wavenumber below a given value $k_m$ as the master modes. It is found that synchronisation happens when $k_m$ exceeds a threshold value $k_c$, and $k_c$ depends strongly on the forcing scheme. In rotating Kolmogorov flows, $k_c\eta$ does not change with rotation in the range of rotation rates considered, $\eta$ being the Kolmogorov length scale. Even though the energy spectrum has a steeper slope, the value of $k_c\eta$ is the same as that found in isotropic turbulence. In flows driven by a forcing term maintaining constant energy injection rate, synchronisation becomes easier when rotation is stronger. Here, $k_c\eta$ decreases with rotation, and it is reduced significantly for strong rotations when the slope of the energy spectrum approaches $-3$. It is shown that the conditional Lyapunov exponent for a given $k_m$ is reduced by rotation in the flows driven by the second type of forcing, but it increases mildly with rotation for the Kolmogorov flows. The local conditional Lyapunov exponents fluctuate more strongly as rotation is increased, although synchronisation occurs as long as the average conditional Lyapunov exponents are negative. We also look for the relationship between $k_c$ and the energy spectra of the Lyapunov vectors. We find that the spectra always seem to peak at approximately $k_c$, and synchronisation fails when the energy spectra of the conditional Lyapunov vectors have a local maximum in the slaved modes.

Helicity plays a key role in the evolution of vortex structures and turbulent dynamics. The helicity dynamics and vortex structures in streamwise-rotating channel turbulence are discussed in this paper using the helicity budget equation and the differentiated second-order structure function equation of helicity. Generally, rotation and Reynolds numbers exhibit opposing effects on the interscale helicity dynamics and the vortices. Under the buffer layer, the positions of the helicity peaks are proportional to the ratio between the Reynolds and rotation numbers. The mechanism is related to the opposing effects of convection and rotation. Rotation directly affects the helicity balance through the Coriolis term and corresponding pressure term. In the buffer layer, the scale helicity is negative at small scales but positive at large scales, which is mainly induced by the spatial effects (the production and the spatial turbulent convection) but reduced by interscale cascades. Examination of structures reveals the close association between scale helicity and streaks, with streak lift angles exhibiting an increase with rotation and a decrease with Reynolds numbers. In the log-law layer, the Coriolis terms and corresponding pressure terms are proportional to the rotation numbers but remain independent of the Reynolds numbers. The negative scale helicity is forward cascaded towards small scales. Generally, spanwise vortices in the log-law layer are related to sweep events and forward cascades. Our findings indicate that these spanwise vortices are suppressed by rotation but recover with increasing Reynolds numbers, aligning with the effects observed in the scale helicity balance.

Can the similarity between rotation and stratification provide quantitative predictions for complex turbulence? In this work, we focus on plane Couette turbulence as the background flow, which allows us to eliminate the key differences between Rayleigh–Bénard and Taylor–Couette turbulence, and facilitates a quantitative mapping across many complex turbulent systems involving rotation, stratification and curvature effects. To characterize the separated or coupled effects of rotation and stratification, we introduce an overall Richardson number ${Ri}_\chi$ which is the sum of the Coriolis Richardson number $Ri_\theta$ and the buoyancy Richardson number $Ri_T$. When the Prandtl number $Pr=1$, the heat and inertial-frame momentum transport almost coincide and mainly depend on ${Ri}_\chi$ and the Reynolds number, regardless of the specific ratio between $Ri_\theta$ and $Ri_T$. When $Pr$ varies, the weighted average ${Nu}_\chi$ of the transport coefficients can still remain approximately invariant in most cases. Furthermore, the large-scale structures in purely rotating and purely stratified cases exhibit strikingly similar features. These findings not only indicate a more reasonable analogy for the ultimate Taylor–Couette turbulence but also pave the way for developing new predictive models for natural and industrial processes.

Based on the characteristics of large-scale plume currents in rotating plane Poiseuille flows (RPPF), an injection/suction control strategy is introduced to augment the intensity of plume currents and improve the turbulent transport of passive scalar. The control strategy maintains the conventional non-penetrative condition on the stable side, and applies a wall-normal velocity that varies in the spanwise direction on the unstable side. For comparison, the control with non-penetrative condition on the unstable side and injection/suction on the stable side is also examined. The RPPF at $Re_\tau$ ranging from $180$ to $300$ and $Ro_\tau$ ranging from $0$ to $30$ are studied. Injection/suction with fixed root-mean-squared wall-normal velocity (below $1\,\%$ of the bulk mean velocity) at the wall is considered. Direct numerical simulations reveal that the injection/suction on the stable side has minor effect for all cases studied, whereas the injection/suction with properly distributed slots on the unstable side can significantly enhance the large-scale plume currents and the turbulent transport efficiency at small or moderate rotation numbers. This is attributed to the fact that plumes are generated on the unstable side, and controlling the origin of plumes is more effective. A proper strategy for maximum enhancement of turbulent transport is limiting the distance between injection slots equal to or slightly larger than the intrinsic distance between plume currents. This strategy is valid for all physical and computational parameters currently considered, and is potentially applicable over a much wider parameter range.

This article concerns the time-evolution, spectral structure and scaling of weak turbulence subject to rotation and stable stratification. The flow is expressed as a combination of particular solutions, referred to as modes, of the linearised governing equations without viscosity or diffusion. Modes are of two types: oscillatory ones which represent inertial-gravity waves and time-independent ones that express a non-propagating (NP) component of the flow. The presence of the NP component, which plays an active role in the dynamics apart from in the case of pure rotation, renders wave-turbulence analysis problematic because the NP mode is non-dispersive. Equations are derived for the time evolution of the modal amplitudes, evolution which is due to nonlinearity and visco-diffusion. Subsequent analysis assumes that one or other (or both) of the Rossby and Froude numbers is small (weak turbulence). Given this assumption, the NP component is found to evolve independently of the wave one and a numerical scheme, similar to, though significantly different from classical direct numerical simulation, is used to determine its time evolution. The treatment of the wave component assumes its amplitude is large compared with the NP one, otherwise there are seemingly intractable difficulties of closure in the analysis. Given this further assumption, the wave component decouples from the NP one. Evolution equations for the wave spectra are derived using wave-turbulence analysis and are integrated numerically. As might be expected, these equations indicate that nonlinear coupling of wave modes is dominated by resonances. Results are given for both the NP and wave components.

Wave turbulence is the study of the long-time statistical behaviour of equations describing a set of weakly nonlinear interacting waves. Such a theory, which has a natural asymptotic closure, allows us to probe the nature of turbulence more deeply than the exact Kolmogorov laws by rigorously proving the direction of the cascade and the existence of an inertial range, predicting stationary spectra for conserved quantities, or evaluating the Kolmogorov constant. An emblematic example is given by fast rotating fluids for which a wave turbulence theory has been derived by Galtier (Phys. Rev. E, vol. 68, issue 1, 2003, p. 015301). This work involves non-trivial analytical developments for a problem that is anisotropic by nature. We propose here a new path for the derivation of the kinetic equation by using the anisotropy at the beginning of the analysis. We show that the helicity basis is not necessary to obtain the wave amplitude equation for the canonical variables that involve a combination of poloidal and toroidal fields. The multiple time scale method adapted to this anisotropic problem is then used to derive the kinetic equation that is the same as the original work when anisotropy is eventually taken into account. This result proves the commutativity between asymptotic closure and anisotropy. In addition, the multiple time scale method informs us that the kinetic equation can be derived without imposing restrictions on the probability distribution of the wave amplitude such as quasi-Gaussianity, or on the phase such as random phase approximation that naturally occurs dynamically.

We investigate the influence of rotation on the onset and saturation of the Faraday instability in a vertically oscillating two-layer miscible fluid using a theoretical model and direct numerical simulations (DNS). Our analytical approach utilizes Floquet analysis to solve a set of the Mathieu equations obtained from the linear stability analysis. The solution of the Mathieu equations comprises stable and harmonic, and subharmonic unstable regions in a three-dimensional stability diagram. We find that the Coriolis force delays the onset of the subharmonic instability responsible for the growth of the mixing zone size at lower forcing amplitudes. However, at higher forcing amplitudes, the flow is energetic enough to mitigate the instability delaying effect of rotation, and the evolution of the mixing zone size is similar in both rotating and non-rotating environments. These results are corroborated by DNS at different Coriolis frequencies and forcing amplitudes. We also observe that for $(\,f/\omega )^2<0.25$, where $f$ is the Coriolis frequency, and $\omega$ is the forcing frequency, the instability and the turbulent mixing zone size-$L$ saturates. When $(\,f/\omega )^2\geq 0.25$, the turbulent mixing zone size-$L$ never saturates and continues to grow.
