This work is the second in a series, following Part I [Kwa24] (Algebra Number Theory 18.10 (2024)) and preceding Part III [Kwa25] (Math. Ann. 391.1 (2025)). We continue our investigation of spectral moments of $\text {GL}(3)\times \text {GL}(2)\ L$-functions from the perspective of period integrals. Using an identity between two distinct periods for the $\text {GL}(3)$ Eisenstein series, we establish an exact Motohashi-type identity linking the shifted cubic moment of $\text {GL}(2)\ L$-functions to the shifted fourth moment of $\text {GL}(1) L$-functions. In addition, we offer a novel, intrinsic and automorphic account for the sources and symmetries of the full set of main terms for both moments, in agreement with the CFKRS Moment Conjectures (Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 91 (2005)).

Let $N \ge 1$, $k \ge 2$ even, and $\sigma$ denote a sign pattern for N. In this paper, we first determine the exact proportion of forms in $S_k(N)$ and $S_k^{\mathrm{new}}(N)$ with a given Atkin–Lehner sign pattern $\sigma$. Then we study the asymptotic behaviour of the Hecke operators $T_p$ over the subspaces of $S_k(N)$ and $S_k^{{\mathrm{new}}}(N)$ with Atkin–Lehner sign pattern $\sigma$. In particular, for the p-adic Plancherel measure $\mu_p$, we show that the Hecke eigenvalues for $T_p$ over these subspaces are $\mu_p$-equidistributed as $N+k \to \infty$.

In this paper, we give a complete list of strongly tempered anomaly-free hyperspherical Hamiltonian spaces-those that are dual to symplectic vector spaces under the relative Langlands duality. We show that the period integrals attached to the list contain many previously studied Rankin-Selberg integrals and period integrals, thus giving a new conceptual understanding of these integrals. The list also proposes many new interesting period integrals to study.

We develop generalized Petersson/Bruggeman-Kuznetsov (PBK) formulas for specified local components at non-archimedean places. In fact, we introduce two hypotheses on non-archimedean test function pairs $f \leftrightarrow \pi (f)$, called geometric and spectral hypotheses, under which one obtains “nice” PBK formulas by the adelic relative trace function approach. Then, given a supercuspidal representation $\sigma $ of $\operatorname {\mathrm {PGL}}_2(\mathbb Q_p)$, we study extensively the case that $\pi (f)$ is a projection onto the line of the newform if $\pi $ is isomorphic to $\sigma $ or its unramified quadratic twist, and $\pi (f) = 0$ otherwise. As a first application, we prove an optimal large sieve inequality for families of automorphic representations that arise in our framework.

We state and prove an extension of the global Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture and the Ichino-Ikeda conjecture to the case of some Eisenstein series on unitary groups $U_n\times U_{n+1}$. Our theorems are based on a comparison of the Jacquet-Rallis trace formulas. A new point is the expression of some interesting spectral contributions in these formulas in terms of integrals of relative characters. As an application of our main theorems, we prove the global Gan-Gross-Prasad and the Ichino-Ikeda conjecture for Bessel periods of unitary groups.

We determine the asymptotic behavior of the coefficients of Hecke polynomials. In particular, this allows us to determine signs of these coefficients when the level or the weight is sufficiently large. In all but finitely many cases, this also verifies a conjecture on the nanvanishing of the coefficients of Hecke polynomials.

In this paper, we study the twisted Ruelle zeta function associated with the geodesic flow of a compact, hyperbolic, odd-dimensional manifold X. The twisted Ruelle zeta function is associated with an acyclic representation $\chi \colon \pi _{1}(X) \rightarrow \operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_{n}(\mathbb {C})$, which is close enough to an acyclic, unitary representation. In this case, the twisted Ruelle zeta function is regular at zero and equals the square of the refined analytic torsion, as it is introduced by Braverman and Kappeler in [6], multiplied by an exponential, which involves the eta invariant of the even part of the odd-signature operator, associated with $\chi $.

We give sharp point-wise bounds in the weight-aspect on fourth moments of modular forms on arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces associated to Eichler orders. Thereby, we strengthen a result of Xia and extend it to co-compact lattices. We realize this fourth moment by constructing a holomorphic theta kernel on $\mathbf {G} \times \mathbf {G} \times \mathbf {SL}_{2}$, for $\mathbf {G}$ an indefinite inner form of $\mathbf {SL}_2$ over $\mathbb {Q}$, based on the Bergman kernel, and considering its $L^2$-norm in the Weil variable. The constructed theta kernel further gives rise to new elementary theta series for integral quadratic forms of signature $(2,2)$.

We study the growth of the local $L^2$-norms of the unitary Eisenstein series for reductive groups over number fields, in terms of their parameters. We derive a poly-logarithmic bound on an average, for a large class of reductive groups. The method is based on Arthur’s development of the spectral side of the trace formula, and ideas of Finis, Lapid and Müller.

As applications of our method, we prove the optimal lifting property for $\mathrm {SL}_n(\mathbb {Z}/q\mathbb {Z})$ for square-free q, as well as the Sarnak–Xue [52] counting property for the principal congruence subgroup of $\mathrm {SL}_n(\mathbb {Z})$ of square-free level. This makes the recent results of Assing–Blomer [8] unconditional.

Let f be an $L^2$-normalized holomorphic newform of weight k on $\Gamma _0(N) \backslash \mathbb {H}$ with N squarefree or, more generally, on any hyperbolic surface $\Gamma \backslash \mathbb {H}$ attached to an Eichler order of squarefree level in an indefinite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb {Q}$. Denote by V the hyperbolic volume of said surface. We prove the sup-norm estimate

with absolute implied constant. For a cuspidal Maaß newform $\varphi $ of eigenvalue $\lambda $ on such a surface, we prove that

We establish analogous estimates in the setting of definite quaternion algebras.

Quaternionic automorphic representations are one attempt to generalize to other groups the special place holomorphic modular forms have among automorphic representations of $\mathrm {GL}_2$. Here, we use ‘hyperendoscopy’ techniques to develop a general trace formula and understand them on an arbitrary group. Then we specialize this general formula to study quaternionic automorphic representations on the exceptional group $G_2$, eventually getting an analog of the Eichler–Selberg trace formula for classical modular forms. We finally use this together with some techniques of Chenevier, Renard and Taïbi to compute dimensions of spaces of level-$1$ quaternionic representations. On the way, we prove a Jacquet–Langlands-style result describing them in terms of classical modular forms and automorphic representations on the compact-at-infinity form $G_2^c$.

The main technical difficulty is that the quaternionic discrete series that quaternionic automorphic representations are defined in terms of do not satisfy a condition of being ‘regular’. A real representation theory argument shows that regularity miraculously does not matter for specifically the case of quaternionic discrete series.

We hope that the techniques and shortcuts highlighted in this project are of interest in other computations about discrete-at-infinity automorphic representations on arbitrary reductive groups instead of just classical ones.

We prove an asymptotic expansion of the second moment of the central values of the $\mathrm {GL}(n)\times \mathrm {GL}(n)$ Rankin–Selberg L-functions $L(1/2,\pi \otimes \pi _0)$ for a fixed cuspidal automorphic representation $\pi _0$ over the family of $\pi $ with analytic conductors bounded by a quantity that is tending to infinity. Our proof uses the integral representations of the L-functions, period with regularised Eisenstein series and the invariance properties of the analytic newvectors.

A new reciprocity formula for Dirichlet L-functions associated to an arbitrary primitive Dirichlet character of prime modulus q is established. We find an identity relating the fourth moment of individual Dirichlet L-functions in the t-aspect to the cubic moment of central L-values of Hecke–Maaß newforms of level at most $q^{2}$ and primitive central character $\psi ^{2}$ averaged over all primitive nonquadratic characters $\psi $ modulo q. Our formula can be thought of as a reverse version of recent work of Petrow–Young. Direct corollaries involve a variant of Iwaniec’s short interval fourth moment bound and the twelfth moment bound for Dirichlet L-functions, which generalise work of Jutila and Heath-Brown, respectively. This work traverses an intersection of classical analytic number theory and automorphic forms.

The purpose of this paper is to extend the explicit geometric evaluation of semisimple orbital integrals for smooth kernels for the Casimir operator obtained by the first author to the case of kernels for arbitrary elements in the center of the enveloping algebra.

We explicate the combinatorial/geometric ingredients of Arthur’s proof of the convergence and polynomiality, in a truncation parameter, of his noninvariant trace formula. Starting with a fan in a real, finite dimensional, vector space and a collection of functions, one for each cone in the fan, we introduce a combinatorial truncated function with respect to a polytope normal to the fan and prove the analogues of Arthur’s results on the convergence and polynomiality of the integral of this truncated function over the vector space. The convergence statements clarify the important role of certain combinatorial subsets that appear in Arthur’s work and provide a crucial partition that amounts to a so-called nearest face partition. The polynomiality statements can be thought of as far reaching extensions of the Ehrhart polynomial. Our proof of polynomiality relies on the Lawrence–Varchenko conical decomposition and readily implies an extension of the well-known combinatorial lemma of Langlands. The Khovanskii–Pukhlikov virtual polytopes are an important ingredient here. Finally, we give some geometric interpretations of our combinatorial truncation on toric varieties as a measure and a Lefschetz number.

We study the limiting behavior of Maass forms on sequences of large-volume compact quotients of $\operatorname {SL}_d({\mathbb R})/\textrm {SO}(d)$, $d\ge 3$, whose spectral parameter stays in a fixed window. We prove a form of quantum ergodicity in this level aspect which extends results of Le Masson and Sahlsten to the higher rank case.

Orthogonality is a fundamental theme in representation theory and Fourier analysis. An orthogonality relation for characters of finite abelian groups (now recognized as an orthogonality relation on $\mathrm {GL}(1)$) was used by Dirichlet to prove infinitely many primes in arithmetic progressions. Orthogonality relations for $\mathrm {GL}(2)$ and $\mathrm {GL}(3)$ have been worked on by many researchers with a broad range of applications to number theory. We present here, for the first time, very explicit orthogonality relations for the real group $\mathrm {GL}(4, \mathbb R)$ with a power savings error term. The proof requires novel techniques in the computation of the geometric side of the Kuznetsov trace formula.

The Zagier L-series encode data of real quadratic fields. We study the average size of these L-series, and prove asymptotic expansions and omega results for the expansion. We then show how the error term in the asymptotic expansion can be used to obtain error terms in the prime geodesic theorem.

Given a closed geodesic on a compact arithmetic hyperbolic surface, we show the existence of a sequence of Laplacian eigenfunctions whose integrals along the geodesic exhibit nontrivial growth. Via Waldspurger’s formula we deduce a lower bound for central values of Rankin-Selberg L-functions of Maass forms times theta series associated to real quadratic fields.

We improve upon the local bound in the depth aspect for sup-norms of newforms on $D^\times$, where $D$ is an indefinite quaternion division algebra over ${\mathbb {Q}}$. Our sup-norm bound implies a depth-aspect subconvexity bound for $L(1/2, f \times \theta _\chi )$, where $f$ is a (varying) newform on $D^\times$ of level $p^n$, and $\theta _\chi$ is an (essentially fixed) automorphic form on $\textrm {GL}_2$ obtained as the theta lift of a Hecke character $\chi$ on a quadratic field. For the proof, we augment the amplification method with a novel filtration argument and a recent counting result proved by the second-named author to reduce to showing strong quantitative decay of matrix coefficients of local newvectors along compact subsets, which we establish via $p$-adic stationary phase analysis. Furthermore, we prove a general upper bound in the level aspect for sup-norms of automorphic forms belonging to any family whose associated matrix coefficients have such a decay property.
