This paper defines and studies a broad class of shock models by assuming that a Markovian arrival process models the arrival pattern of shocks. Under the defined class, we show that the system’s lifetime follows the well-known phase-type distribution. Further, we examine the age replacement policy for systems with a continuous phase-type distribution, identifying sufficient conditions for determining the optimal replacement time. Since phase-type distributions are dense in the class of lifetime distributions, our findings for the age replacement policy are widely applicable. We include numerical examples and graphical illustrations to support our results.

The distribution theory for discrete-time renewal–reward processes with dependent rewards is developed through the derivation of double transforms. By dependent, we mean the more realistic setting in which the reward for an interarrival period is dependent on the duration of the associated interarrival time. The double transforms are the generating functions in time of the time-dependent reward probability-generating functions. Residue and saddlepoint approximations are used to invert such double transforms so that the reward distribution at arbitrary time n can be accurately approximated. In addition, double transforms are developed for the first-passage time distribution that the cumulative reward exceeds a fixed threshold amount. These distributions are accurately approximated by inverting the double transforms using residue and saddlepoint approximation methods. The residue methods also provide asymptotic expansions for moments and allow for the proof of central limit theorems related to these first passage times and reward amounts.

In this paper, a new multivariate counting process model (called Multivariate Poisson Generalized Gamma Process) is developed and its main properties are studied. Some basic stochastic properties of the number of events in the new multivariate counting process are initially derived. It is shown that this new multivariate counting process model includes the multivariate generalized Pólya process as a special case. The dependence structure of the multivariate counting process model is discussed. Some results on multivariate stochastic comparisons are also obtained.

We introduce a bivariate tempered space-fractional Poisson process (BTSFPP) by time-changing the bivariate Poisson process with an independent tempered $\alpha$-stable subordinator. We study its distributional properties and its connection to differential equations. The Lévy measure for the BTSFPP is also derived. A bivariate competing risks and shock model based on the BTSFPP for predicting the failure times of items that undergo two random shocks is also explored. The system is supposed to break when the sum of two types of shock reaches a certain random threshold. Various results related to reliability, such as reliability function, hazard rates, failure density, and the probability that failure occurs due to a certain type of shock, are studied. We show that for a general Lévy subordinator, the failure time of the system is exponentially distributed with mean depending on the Laplace exponent of the Lévy subordinator when the threshold has a geometric distribution. Some special cases and several typical examples are also demonstrated.

In this work, we consider two sets of dependent variables $\{X_{1},\ldots,X_{n}\}$ and $\{Y_{1},\ldots,Y_{n}\}$, where $X_{i}\sim EW(\alpha_{i},\lambda_{i},k_{i})$ and $Y_{i}\sim EW(\beta_{i},\mu_{i},l_{i})$, for $i=1,\ldots, n$, which are coupled by Archimedean copulas having different generators. We then establish different inequalities between two extremes, namely, $X_{1:n}$ and $Y_{1:n}$ and $X_{n:n}$ and $Y_{n:n}$, in terms of the usual stochastic, star, Lorenz, hazard rate, reversed hazard rate and dispersive orders. Several examples and counterexamples are presented for illustrating all the results established here. Some of the results here extend the existing results of [5] (Barmalzan, G., Ayat, S.M., Balakrishnan, N., & Roozegar, R. (2020). Stochastic comparisons of series and parallel systems with dependent heterogeneous extended exponential components under Archimedean copula. Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics 380: Article No. 112965).

We study three classes of shock models governed by an inverse gamma mixed Poisson process (IGMP), namely a mixed Poisson process with an inverse gamma mixing distribution. In particular, we analyze (1) the extreme shock model, (2) the δ-shock model, and the (3) cumulative shock model. For the latter, we assume a constant and an exponentially distributed random threshold and consider different choices for the distribution of the amount of damage caused by a single shock. For all the treated cases, we obtain the survival function, together with the expected value and the variance of the failure time. Some properties of the inverse gamma mixed Poisson process are also disclosed.

Developed sequential order statistics (DSOS) are very useful in modeling the lifetimes of systems with dependent components, where the failure of one component affects the performance of remaining surviving components. We study some stochastic comparison results for DSOS in both one-sample and two-sample scenarios. Furthermore, we study various ageing properties of DSOS. We state many useful results for generalized order statistics as well as ordinary order statistics with dependent random variables. At the end, some numerical examples are given to illustrate the proposed results.

The life distribution of a device subject to shocks governed by a homogeneous Poisson process is shown to have a bathtub failure rate average (BFRA) when the probabilities $\bar{P}_k$ of surviving k shocks possess the corresponding discrete property. We prove closure under the formation of weak limits for BFRA distributions and explore related moment convergence issues within the BFRA family. Similar results for increasing and decreasing failure rate average distributions are obtained either independently or as consequences of our results. We also establish some results outlining the positions of various non-monotonic ageing classes such as bathtub failure rate, increasing initially then decreasing mean residual life, new worse then better than used in expectation, and increasing initially then decreasing mean time to failure in the hierarchy. Finally, an open problem is posed and a partial solution provided.

We propose a stochastic model for the failure times of items subject to two external random shocks occurring as events in an underlying bivariate counting process. This is a special formulation of the competing risks model, which is of interest in reliability theory and survival analysis. Specifically, we assume that a system, or an item, fails when the sum of the two types of shock reaches a critical random threshold. In detail, the two kinds of shock occur according to a bivariate space-fractional Poisson process, which is a two-dimensional vector of independent homogeneous Poisson processes time-changed by an independent stable subordinator. Various results are given, such as analytic hazard rates, failure densities, the probability that the failure occurs due to a specific type of shock, and the survival function. Some special cases and ageing notions related to the NBU characterization are also considered. In this way we generalize certain results in the literature, which can be recovered when the underlying process reduces to the homogeneous Poisson process.

Layer reinsurance treaty is a common form obtained in the problem of optimal reinsurance design. In this paper, we study allocations of policy limits in layer reinsurance treaties with dependent risks. We investigate the effects of orderings and heterogeneity among policy limits on the expected utility functions of the terminal wealth from the viewpoint of risk-averse insurers faced with right tail weakly stochastic arrangement increasing losses. Orderings on optimal allocations are presented for normal layer reinsurance contracts under certain conditions. Parallel studies are also conducted for randomized layer reinsurance contracts. As a special case, the worst allocations of policy limits are also identified when the exact dependence structure among the losses is unknown. Numerical examples are presented to shed light on the theoretical findings.

We consider a risk model with a counting process whose intensity is a Markovian shot-noise process, to resolve one of the disadvantages of the Cramér–Lundberg model, namely the constant intensity of the Poisson process. Due to this structure, we can apply the theory of piecewise deterministic Markov processes on a multivariate process containing the intensity and the reserve process, which allows us to identify a family of martingales. Eventually, we use change of measure techniques to derive an upper bound for the ruin probability in this model. Exploiting a recurrent structure of the shot-noise process, even the asymptotic behaviour of the ruin probability can be determined.

This paper is concerned with the optimal number of redundant allocation to n-component coherent systems consisting of heterogeneous dependent components. We assume that the system is built up of L groups of different components, $L\geq 1$ , where there are $n_i$ components in group i, and $\sum_{i=1}^{L}n_i=n$ . The problem of interest is to allocate $v_i$ active redundant components to each component of type i, $i=1,\dots, L$ . To get the optimal values of $v_i$ we propose two cost-based criteria. One of them is introduced based on the costs of renewing the failed components and the costs of refreshing the alive ones at the system failure time. The other criterion is proposed based on the costs of replacing the system at its failure time or at a predetermined time $\tau$ , whichever occurs first. The expressions for the proposed functions are derived using the mixture representation of the system reliability function based on the notion of survival signature. We assume that a given copula function models the dependency structure between the components. In the particular case that the system is a series-parallel structure, we provide the formulas for the proposed cost-based functions. The results are discussed numerically for some specific coherent systems.

We show that load-sharing models (a very special class of multivariate probability models for nonnegative random variables) can be used to obtain basic results about a multivariate extension of stochastic precedence and related paradoxes. Such results can be applied in several different fields. In particular, applications of them can be developed in the context of paradoxes which arise in voting theory. Also, an application to the notion of probability signature may be of interest, in the field of systems reliability.

In this paper we study the allocation problem of relevations in coherent systems. The optimal allocation strategies are obtained by implementing stochastic comparisons of different policies according to the usual stochastic order and the hazard rate order. As special cases of relevations, the load-sharing and minimal repair policies are further investigated. Sufficient (and necessary) conditions are established for various stochastic orderings. Numerical examples are also presented as illustrations.

In a multitype branching process, it is assumed that immigrants arrive according to a non-homogeneous Poisson or a contagious Poisson process (both processes are formulated as a non-homogeneous birth process with an appropriate choice of transition intensities). We show that the normalized numbers of objects of the various types alive at time t for supercritical, critical, and subcritical cases jointly converge in distribution under those two different arrival processes. Furthermore, we provide some transient expectation results when there are only two types of particles.

Signatures are useful in analyzing and evaluating coherent systems. However, their computation is a challenging problem, especially for complex coherent structures. In most cases the reliability of a binary coherent system can be linked to a tail probability associated with a properly defined waiting time random variable in a sequence of binary trials. In this paper we present a method for computing the minimal signature of a binary coherent system. Our method is based on matrix-geometric distributions. First, a proper matrix-geometric random variable corresponding to the system structure is found. Second, its probability generating function is obtained. Finally, the companion representation for the distribution of matrix-geometric distribution is used to obtain a matrix-based expression for the minimal signature of the coherent system. The results are also extended to a system with two types of components.

In this paper we consider a new generalized finite mixture model formed by dependent and identically distributed (d.i.d.) components. We then establish results for the comparisons of lifetimes of two such generalized finite mixture models in two different cases: (i) when the two mixture models are formed from two random vectors $\textbf{X}$ and $\textbf{Y}$ but with the same weights, and (ii) when the two mixture models are formed with the same random vectors but with different weights. Because the lifetimes of k-out-of-n systems and coherent systems are special cases of the mixture model considered, we used the established results to compare the lifetimes of k-out-of-n systems and coherent systems with respect to the reversed hazard rate and hazard rate orderings.

A class of controlled branching processes with continuous time is introduced and some limiting distributions are obtained in the critical case. An extension of this class as regenerative controlled branching processes with continuous time is proposed and some asymptotic properties are considered.

Furthermore, let $\{L_1^{*},\ldots ,L_n^{*}\}$ be a set of independent Bernoulli random variables, independently of $Y_{i}$'s, with $E(L_{i}^{*})=p_{i}^{*}$, for $i\in \mathbb {I}_{n}.$ Under this setup, the portfolio of risks is the collection $\{T_{1}^{*}=L_{1}^{*}Y_{1},\ldots ,T_{n}^{*}=L_{n}^{*}Y_{n}\}$, wherein $T_{i}^{*}=L_{i}^{*}Y_{i}$ represents the $i$th claim amount. This article then presents several sufficient conditions, under which the smallest claim amounts are compared in terms of the usual stochastic and hazard rate orders. The comparison results are obtained when the dependence structure among the claim severities are modeled by (i) an Archimedean survival copula and (ii) a general survival copula. Several examples are also presented to illustrate the established results.

The performance and effectiveness of an age replacement policy can be assessed by its mean time to failure (MTTF) function. We develop shock model theory in different scenarios for classes of life distributions based on the MTTF function where the probabilities $\bar{P}_k$ of surviving the first k shocks are assumed to have discrete DMTTF, IMTTF and IDMTTF properties. The cumulative damage model of A-Hameed and Proschan [1] is studied in this context and analogous results are established. Weak convergence and moment convergence issues within the IDMTTF class of life distributions are explored. The preservation of the IDMTTF property under some basic reliability operations is also investigated. Finally we show that the intersection of IDMRL and IDMTTF classes contains the BFR family and establish results outlining the positions of various non-monotonic ageing classes in the hierarchy.
