Field studies were conducted in 1988 and 1989 to examine the interrelations of cultivation and herbicide band width in controlling pitted morningglory and sicklepod in soybean. Alachlor + imazaquin PRE followed by imazaquin + surfactant POST were not applied or were applied on bands 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 cm wide or were broadcast. Plots were cultivated zero, one, two, or three times. Without cultivation, at least a 60-cm wide band was needed to achieve maximum soybean seed yields. A slight linear increase in soybean seed yield in response to increasing band width was observed with one cultivation. With two cultivations, soybean seed yields were similar with and without herbicides, but a 15-cm wide herbicide band was needed to achieve maximum production with three cultivations. Greatest gross returns exclusive of weed management costs were realized with two or three cultivations and a 15-cm wide band.

Imazethapyr at 0.05 to 0.14 kg ai/ha applied preplant incorporated, preemergence, and postemergence was evaluated alone and with complementary herbicides in the field for weed control in soybean. Imazethapyr controlled 90% or more smooth pigweed regardless of application method or herbicide rate. Imazethapyr at 0.05 kg/ha controlled jimsonweed 30% better postemergence compared to soil applications. Imazethapyr at 0.10 kg/ha controlled 90% or more velvetleaf regardless of application method. The addition of alachlor to soil-applied imazethapyr enhanced giant foxtail, jimsonweed, and velvetleaf control. Adding acifluorfen or bentazon to postemergence imazethapyr antagonized weed control. Adding sethoxydim to postemergence imazethapyr was not beneficial.

Wild-proso millet control in furrow-irrigated corn was evaluated in Colorado and Nebraska in 1986 and 1987. No single herbicide alone controlled wild-proso millet all season. In Colorado, EPTC applied preplant incorporated followed by cyanazine plus pendimethalin applied early postemergence controlled 94% of wild-proso millet. Acetochlor applied preemergence followed by cyanazine plus pendimethalin applied early postemergence controlled wild-proso millet better all season (93%) than alachlor (81%) or metolachlor (71%) followed by the same early postemergence strategy. Successful Colorado wild-proso millet management treatments (>85% season-long control) increased corn yields an average of 3260 kg ha-1 compared to the untreated control. To obtain wild-proso millet control of 90% or more in Nebraska in 1986, alachlor, cycloate, EPTC, and metolachlor applied had to be combined with cyanazine plus pendimethalin applied early postemergence. Average corn yields in herbicide-treated areas in Nebraska were 2980 kg ha-1 higher than those recorded in the untreated control.

Field experiments in 1984 and 1985 near Headland, AL involved the influence of 18 integrated weed management systems incorporated from nine herbicide-tillage systems (H-T) and two row patterns on control of large crabgrass and Texas panicum, crop yield, and net returns in grain sorghum. The conventional-tillage system plus herbicide combinations; alachlor preplant incorporated (PPI), atrazine postemergence (POST), and paraquat POST directed, provided 90% or greater control of large crabgrass throughout the season and high sorghum yields in one of two years; and 90% or greater control of Texas panicum from mid-June through mid-August and high sorghum yields in both years. Results in 1984 and 1985 similar to those above were obtained with strip tillage plus herbicide combinations; alachlor PPI, atrazine POST, and paraquat POST directed; alachlor PPI and tridiphane plus atrazine POST; and tridiphane plus atrazine POST and paraquat POST directed. Row patterns did not consistently influence control of large crabgrass, Texas panicum, or sorghum yield. Economic net returns ranged from – $20 to $210 per hectare for the large crabgrass control systems in 1984; however, low sorghum yields in 1985 resulted largely in negative returns. Similar net returns were obtained in the Texas panicum experiment.

Sweet corn and pumpkin were planted no-tillage (NT) into cover crop residue treatments of vetch, rye, crimson clover, and ladino clover controlled with glyphosate, and a bare ground conventional tillage (CT) control. Objectives included evaluation of crop growth, yield, and weed suppression in NT versus CT treatments. Herbicide application was also investigated, with a plus and minus herbicide treatment (alachlor plus cyanazine for sweet corn, or ethalfluralin for pumpkin) as the main factor in the factorial experiment, and cover crops the subfactors. Weed control 4 wk after planting was dependent upon cover crop. The fewest weed numbers and least biomass were found in the ladino clover plots, but clover regrowth and subsequent competition with the cash crop were severe. Herbicides also affected weed biomass at 4 wk after vegetable planting, with least biomass in herbicide-treated plots. Neither cover crop nor herbicide treatment significantly affected weed weight by 8 wk after planting or pumpkin fruit weight at harvest. Pumpkin yield was not influenced by herbicide application. The vetch cover, although harboring greatest weed biomass, produced the greatest total yield (ear weight) in sweet corn. When averaged over cover crop, sweet corn yields were higher in herbicide-treated plots than in untreated ones. Both sweet corn and pumpkin maturity were generally delayed in the absence of herbicide treatments or in the presence of cover crop residues, especially clover and rye residues.

SAN 582 at 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, and 1.6 kg ai/ha; alachlor at 1.7, 2.2, and 2.8 kg/ha; and metolachlor at 1.7, 2.2, and 2.8 kg/ha were applied preemergence without and with atrazine at 1.7 kg/ha in no-till corn at two locations near Blacksburg, VA, in 1993 and 1994. SAN 582, alachlor, and metolachlor controlled TR-smooth pigweed when applied without or with atrazine, and with only a few exceptions, control was greater than 60%. The highest rate of individual herbicides was more effective than the lowest rate in most cases. Early control of TR-smooth pigweed was similar from all three herbicides, especially at higher rates, but control later in the season tended to be best with alachlor. As expected, atrazine applied alone did not control TR-smooth pigweed, and crop yields were increased with herbicide treatments compared to no treatment.

The successful introduction of a new crop depends upon the availability of economical, safe, and effective herbicides for that crop. Greenhouse trials identified PRE herbicide applications of 4.5 kg ai ha−1 of metolachlor and of alachlor, 2.2 kg ai ha−1 of linuron and of pendimethalin, and 1.1 kg ai ha−1 of desmediphan as noninjurious to sweet white lupin. POST applications of 0.28 kg ai ha−1 of sethoxydim and of fluazifop and 0.22 kg ai ha−1 of haloxyfop also did not injure the sweet white lupin. Field trials indicated that safe and effective weed control could be obtained with combinations of linuron with metolachlor, alachlor, or pendimethalin depending on weed species present.

Field studies were conducted for 3 yr to evaluate the persistence of metolachlor and alachlor applied to ‘Centennial’ soybean and to determine their residual effect on ‘Mars' rice. At labeled use rates of metolachlor at 2.8 kg ai/ha and alachlor at 3.9 kg ai/ha, soil residue levels in the fall 5 months after application on Crowley and Midland silt loam soils averaged 0.04 and 0.05 ppmw, respectively. Metolachlor fall soil residues averaged 3.5 times higher when applied at 5.6 and 11.2 kg/ha compared to 2.8 kg/ha, but residues for labeled and double rates of alachlor were similar. In the spring 9 months after herbicide application, soil residues averaged over years did not exceed 0.06 ppmw. The 3-yr rice yields were not affected by residual metolachlor or alachlor.

A cropping system of soybeans and rice grown in alternate years for 4 yr controlled red rice when combined with effective herbicide treatments applied to the soybean crop. Effective herbicide treatments in soybeans were preplant incorporated applications of alachlor, metolachlor, or alachlor plus trifluralin each followed by postemergence over-the-top applications of bentazon plus mefluidide, postemergence directed applications of paraquat, or sequential applications of postemergence over-the-top bentazon plus mefluidide and postemergence directed paraquat. Control of red rice in soybeans reduced red rice infestations in the subsequent rice crop. Red rice infestations were lower in rice grown the fourth year than in rice grown the second year. Postemergence over-the-top or directed herbicide treatments used alone or combined with preplant incorporated applications of trifluralin did not control red rice in soybeans with subsequent red rice infestations in the rice crop.

Information on the effects of multiple weed management tactics in corn is needed to develop integrated weed management systems. The effectiveness and compatibility of an in-row cultivator as compared to a standard interrow cultivator used with reduced rates of a soil-applied herbicide, rotary hoeing, and/or a bioeconomic model for POST herbicide selection was examined. Weed control with a single rotary hoeing at corn emergence controlled annual weeds similarly to two rotary hoeings. One-third recommended use rate of alachlor controlled weeds similarly to a two-thirds rate. Reduced rates of alachlor controlled more weeds than rotary hoeing over 2 yr. The in-row cultivator required early-season weed control (rotary hoeing or reduced alachlor rate) for optimum efficacy. The in-row cultivator provided better weed control than the standard cultivator while the cost of operating the two cultivators was similar. Thus, the in-row cultivator was more efficient than the standard cultivator. Furthermore, less intensive early-season weed control was required with the in-row cultivator for maximum weed control as compared to the standard cultivator. Rotary hoeing plus the in-row cultivator provided similar weed control to other weed management tactics that required both soil-applied and POST herbicides. Gross margin was influenced more by corn yield than cost of weed management tactics.

Field experiments were conducted in 1988, 1989, and 1990 in Greece to investigate the combination of cultural and chemical methods for weed control in soybean. The selectivity of herbicides or the combination of herbicides used was dependent on application rate. Imazaquin applied PRE was selective on soybean even at 0.18 kg/ha, whereas imazethapyr was safer on soybean than imazaquin at 0.22 kg/ha. Metribuzin at 0.37 kg/ha tank-mixed with alachlor, metolachlor, imazaquin, and SAN 582H were not phytotoxic at their recommended rates. All herbicides satisfactorily controlled the weeds in the experiments. The early-season period threshold level for a mixed population of Amaranthus spp. occurred 3.0 to 3.5 wk after weed emergence. Density of Amaranthus spp. of about 270 to 470 plants/m2 caused soybean yield reduction equal to 11 to 35%, respectively. The treatments did not influence the oil content of the soybean seed but in one experiment the protein content was influenced slightly by some of the treatments. The results emphasize the importance of using chemical, cultural, and competition threshold levels of cultural practices for an integrated approach for weed control in soybean.

Growth chamber experiments were conducted to determine if certain genetic, environmental, and chemical factors or their interactions promote chloroacetamide herbicide injury to corn seedlings. Greater chloroacetamide injury occurred with ‘Pioneer 3320’ than with ‘Pioneer 3780’ hybrid corn, with 15 C than with 30 C soil temperature, with soil moisture at 105% field capacity (FC) than at 75% FC, with alachlor than with metolachlor, and with a herbicide rate of 2.2 kg/ha than with 1.1 kg/ha. Covering the plant containers with clear plastic until seedling emergence caused alachlor to be more phytotoxic to corn than metolachlor. Most factors evaluated increased the injury to corn in an additive manner.

The dissipation of four commonly used soil-applied herbicides was examined in a standardized field experiment in three southern states (Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee). Averaged over the three soils and 2 yr, the relative order of increasing half-life defined as time for 50% disappearance in days (DT50) was acetochlor (6.3 d) = alachlor (6.3 d) = SAN 582 (7.3 d) < metolachlor (13.7 d). Metolachlor was the most persistent in the soil surface, and this could potentially translate into greater duration of weed control into the growing season. All examined herbicides had a DT50 that averaged less than 14 d in all states in both years, so full-season weed control of susceptible species would not be expected. Rapid herbicide degradation was encouraged in these field sites by adequate to excessive soil moisture and warm temperatures throughout the sampling interval. The soils also were light textured, and the lower adsorption of the herbicide allowed for degradation ease and perhaps leaching below the sampling depth.

Both alachlor at 3.6 kg ai/ha and metolachlor at 2.8 kg ai/ha applied preplant incorporated consistently controlled red rice 82% and 90%, respectively, over a 3-yr period. Averaged across years, only mefluidide at 0.14 kg ai/ha plus bentazon at 0.84 kg ai/ha, haloxyfop at 0.28 kg ai/ha, and quizalofop at 0.14 kg ai/ha applied postemergence controlled red rice comparable to the preplant herbicide treatments. High rates of sethoxydim and fluazifop (0.56 kg ai/ha), haloxyfop (0.28 kg ai/ha), and quizalofop (0.14 kg ai/ha) were needed to obtain soybean yields equivalent to alachlor and metolachlor.

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the influence of degradation and sorption processes on the dissipation of alachlor in one Colorado soil (Kim clay loam) and three Minnesota soils (Port Byron silt loam, Webster silty clay loam, and Estherville sandy loam) as a function of soil depth. Persistence and movement of alachlor in an irrigated corn production system also were determined on the Kim soil. Laboratory degradation data fit first-order kinetics, and rate constants ranged from 0.0094 to 0.0251 d-1 and varied with soil type and depth. For instance, in 60- to 75-cm-depth Kim soil, alachlor degraded at a slower rate (k = 0.011 d-1) than in surface soil samples (k = 0.022 d-1). Alachlor sorption to the four soils was moderate (Kf = 0.7 to 7.4; Kf,oc = 71 to 470) and concentration dependent (1/n < 1.0). Significant hysteretic desorption of alachlor from soils also was observed (1/n desorption < 1/n sorption). The combined effect of degradation and sorption processes has been used to classify a chemical's potential to leach to groundwater. Based on Kf,oc and dissipation half-life, alachlor would be classified as a “leacher” in Kim, Port Byron, and Estherville soils and classified as transitional between “leacher” and “nonleacher” in the Webster soil. The dissipation first-order rate constant (k) of alachlor in Kim soil in the field was 0.036 α 0.012 d-1. Dissipation was apparently not due to leaching since bromide applied at the same time remained in the top 15 cm during the first 28 d. It appears that laboratory-derived leaching indices may overestimate actual leaching and should be used with caution for predictive or regulatory purposes.

The objectives of this study were to determine how the timing of weed management treatments in winter wheat stubble affects weed control the following season and to determine if spring herbicide rates in corn can be reduced with appropriately timed stubble management practices. Field studies were conducted at two sites in Ohio between 1993 and 1995. Wheat stubble treatments consisted of glyphosate (0.84 kg ae/ha) plus 2,4-D (0.48 kg ae/ha) applied in July, August, or September, or at all three timings, and a nontreated control. In the following season, spring herbicide treatments consisted of a full rate of atrazine (1.7 kg ai/ha) plus alachlor (2.8 kg ai/ha) preemergence, a half rate of these herbicides, or no spring herbicide treatment. Across all locations, a postharvest treatment of glyphosate plus 2,4-D followed by alachlor plus atrazine at half or full rates in the spring controlled all broadleaf weeds, except giant ragweed, at least 88%. Giant foxtail control at three locations was at least 83% when a postharvest glyphosate plus 2,4-D treatment was followed by spring applications of alachlor plus atrazine at half or full rates. Weed control in treatments without alachlor plus atrazine was variable, although broadleaf control from July and August glyphosate plus 2,4-D applications was greater than from September applications. Where alachlor and atrazine were not applied, August was generally the best timing of herbicide applications to wheat stubble for reducing weed populations the following season.

An algorithm was developed for use in a geographic information system (GIS) to model the surface movement of herbicide in response to a rainfall event as modulated by slope, soil, management practices, and time of herbicide application. This algorithm was implemented in the GIS software Geographic Resource Analysis Support System (GRASS) and uses as submodels the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) curve number procedure, the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE), and the pesticide submodel from the model Chemicals, Runoff, and Erosion from Agricultural Management Systems (CREAMS). The algorithm estimates the loss of pesticide from field areas, runoff flow patterns, and the accumulation of pesticide downslope in response to a rainfall event. The simulated movement of atrazine, cyanazine, and alachlor was studied under hypothetical management scenarios in the Lake Pittsfield watershed in Pike Co., IL. Tillage for the simulation was by moldboard plow. An alternate no-till scenario was simulated to test tillage effect on atrazine movement. Herbicides were applied either PPI, PRE, POST, or early preplant for no-till (treated as same application time as PPI but without incorporation). The experiment was designed to incorporate timing of application as a management factor from the standpoint of a single rain event on May 16. The results used for comparison were data from 1 d after POST application, 15 d after PRE application and 30 d after PPI application. The algorithm showed that areas of greater herbicide risk can be located within a watershed and that the effect of alternative management practices can be evaluated using a GIS.

Field studies were conducted in 1994 and 1995 to determine the contribution of PRE applications of alachlor, metolachlor, acetochlor, SAN 582H, or pendimethalin on woolly cupgrass and wild-proso millet control when followed by POST nicosulfuron at 0, 0.018, 0.027, or 0.036 kg ai/ha. Sequential treatments controlled woolly cupgrass and wild-proso millet greater than single applications of PRE herbicides, which when applied alone resulted in the least wild-proso millet control and lowest corn grain yield. Lack of complete woolly cupgrass control with POST nicosulfuron alone resulted in corn grain yield that was less than with sequential treatments but was equal to PRE treatments. Wild-proso millet control with nicosulfuron at 0.027 kg/ha resulted in corn grain yield that was less than with sequential treatments, but greater than with all PRE treatments except for SAN 582H. All PRE herbicides, regardless of early season performance, when followed by nicosulfuron resulted in woolly cupgrass and wild-proso millet control that was similar. Woolly cupgrass seed production compared to the nontreated check was reduced 98% with acetochlor followed by nicosulfuron. Sequential treatments provided the most consistent woolly cupgrass and wild-proso millet control, the highest corn grain yield, and the greatest reduction in woolly cupgrass and wild-proso millet seed production.

Glyphosate, alone and in combination with other herbicides or additives, was evaluated as a spot or shielded treatment for the control of silverleaf nightshade in cotton in three experiments over four years. Glyphosate used at 10.8 g ae/L in 1985 on dryland cotton controlled 81 to 98% of the silverleaf nightshade, but cotton lint yields were reduced by all treatments compared to the weed-free check. Glyphosate used at 7.2 g ae/L in 1986 on irrigated cotton controlled 6 to 83% of the silverleaf nightshade, and lint yields were reduced only when multiple spot applications were made. Spot applications of glyphosate were effective for silverleaf nightshade control when applied 7 wk after crop emergence in 1988. Weed control and cotton injury were lower with shielded applications than spot applications. In 1989, retreatments during a season or the next year resulted in 95% or greater silverleaf nightshade control. Cotton yield increases from herbicide treatment were not observed in 1988; however, yield increases were observed in 1989 when spot treatments were applied to the more successful 1988 plots.

Field and column experiments were conducted to determine the effect of controlled release formulations on weed control and leaching of alachlor and metribuzin on a Plainfield sand. Controlled release formulations including two starch encapsulations of both herbicides and a microencapsulation of alachlor were compared to emulsifiable concentrate and dry flowable formulations of alachlor and metribuzin, respectively. Herbicide movement was measured in laboratory columns and in the field throughout two growing seasons to a soil depth of 91 cm. Soybean injury and weed control were monitored. No significant differences in herbicide movement between starch-encapsulated and emulsifiable concentrate formulations were observed in either field or column experiments. Microencapsulation resulted in the greatest retention of alachlor in the soil surface in field and columns. Compared to the dry flowable formulation, starch encapsulation did not affect metribuzin distribution in the field but reduced leaching in columns. Controlled release formulations did not result in significant differences in weed control and soybean injury compared to the emulsifiable concentrate alachlor and dry flowable metribuzin formulations. Starch encapsulations had a limited effect on alachlor and metribuzin movement. Degradation appeared to be the primary mechanism for herbicide dissipation while leaching losses were minor.
