SSHA and SHA announce three Press titles as winners

Both the Social Science History Association (SSHA) and Southern Historical Association (SHA) have recognized three Press titles in their 2018 awards.

For her book, Masterless Men: Poor Whites and Slavery in the Antebellum South, Keri Leigh Merrit was awarded both the SHA’s Bennet H. Wall Award, given every two years for the best book published in southern business or economic history, as well as the SSHA’s President’s Book Award for meritorious scholarship from an early career scholar, sharing the award with another Press author, Taisu Zhang, who was recognized for The Laws and Economics of Confucianism: Kinship and Property in Preindustrial China and England.

The SHA also named the author of Slavery’s Metropolis: Unfree Labor in New Orleans during the Age of Revolutions, Rashauna Johnson, the winner of the H.L. Mitchell Award. Also given every two years, the Mitchell Award recognizes the author of a distinguished book concerning the history of the southern working class.
