‘The Speaking Corner’ is our inaugural five-part podcast series all about developing speaking skills and using research to inform practice. Each episode deals with a different theme relevant to English language teaching more widely and specifically on teaching speaking. The podcast also features various techniques and tips that can help you teach speaking confidently.
There are five episodes in total, each featuring a roundtable of guest speakers from around the world who are experts in their respective fields. They are joined by researchers and product managers here at Cambridge University Press.

- Episode 1 – ‘Giving feedback on speaking’, featuring Philip Kerr
- Episode 2 – ‘Giving time to speaking’, featuring Philip Kerr and Ceri Jones
- Episode 3 – ‘The power of near peer models’, featuring Ceri Jones
- Episode 4 – ‘Mobile learning in and out of the classroom’, featuring Graham Skerritt
- Episode 5 – ‘Teacher Development matters’, featuring Craig Thaine
In each episode, we build on previous research on feedback, time for speaking, near peers, mobiles and language learning, and teacher development with a view to carry the debate and discussion forward. We wanted to delve deeper into the research and discuss how we can, in practical terms, bring it into our practices. Clearly, no mean feat, but we had some great discussions that I think led to some interesting and practical advice that teachers can use in their own classrooms.
