Being understood is often a student’s main ambition when learning another language. Sometimes what we’re taught in class isn’t what we hear when we interact with native speakers, listen to music, watch films or use interactive resources and this is often a frustrating experience. How do we make sure learners are being taught the most relevant and up-to-date language so that they are well-equipped to communicate in English? This talk will look into how we use corpus data to inform ELT materials development, with a particular focus on language change. Looking specifically at examples of how British English has changed over the last 20 years, we will bring the streets of London to your classroom so you can see the value of such research for yourself.

About the speaker

Olivia is an ELT Research Manager at Cambridge University Press. She supports author and editorial use of language and pedagogy research for content development; using corpora and bespoke language resources, her research ensures that materials are informed by real language insights. As a certified language teacher with a background in linguistics, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese from Nottingham Trent University, Olivia takes a research informed perspective for developing learning resources.
