Empowering Remote Learners through Self-Assessment by Katie Welch
October 30th, 2020 - 2pm (Brazil time zone)
As many ESL classrooms move to a virtual format, instructors are asking themselves how they can equip remote students to take more ownership of their learning. To tackle this question, join experienced online instructor Dr. Katie Welch as she demonstrates proven, easy-to-implement strategies that empower learners through self-assessment. In this workshop, attendees will learn how to create rubrics, utilize student self-checks, and provide data tracking opportunities that enable students to routinely reflect on their course engagement and curriculum progress. While several examples will be given specifically for those using Cambridge’s Interchange curriculum, teachers in any context will leave with practical tools to transform their classrooms.
Bio: Katie Welch holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics. She is a teacher trainer and the Past-President of TexTESOLV.

Technology and the beneficial impacts on teaching and learning by Bruna Caltabiano
October 30th, 2020 - 4pm (Brazil time zone)
Teaching English online seems to be here to stay – language institutes and private teachers have been using platforms for video and audio conferences to teach synchronous lessons and try to provide students with lessons which are similar in content and delivery to the ones they had been teaching before. However, classes are not the same, and although this is a reason to make us scared, it is pushing us forward to rethink teaching, learning, and education – it is truly reshaping our future as teachers. The aim of this talk is to share some of my experience as an online teacher and online CELTA tutor and give some tips on how to make better use of the available digital resources to help us deliver more successful lessons, which will be more engaging, interesting and effective, having a positive impact on our students’ outcomes.
Bio: Bruna Caltabiano is a psychologist and a Cambridge CELTA tutor. She’s the Co-Founder & Academic Director of a private language school in São Paulo.

The year 2020 has brought some incredible challenges to education worldwide due to the novel coronavirus. Teaching as a profession has suddenly changed, but the fact that teachers are essential has not. Interchange has evolved over the years to meet your changing needs but the core course philosophy remains the same. This continues to be true today, and we would like to show you how Interchange can help you continue to teach, and help your students continue to learn English even if you cannot be physically present in the classroom.
Bio: Glenn Mathes has been a teacher, teacher trainer, program coordinator, writer, and editor. He is currently a publishing manager for Cambridge University Press ELT based in the New York City office. He is responsible for publishing the Interchange course.
