We know that it can be a challenge to come up with new ways to teach handwriting, so we’ve teamed up with our Penpals for Handwriting author Gill Budgell and put together some top tips for success!
From adopting a whole school handwriting policy to working with a variety of tools (including paint brushes), you’re sure to find something that’ll engage your learners.
- Ensure physical competency by practising both big and small physical movements
- Use a variety of writing materials including pens, pencils, paintbrushes, markers and more
- Don’t forget about your left handers! Know who they are and what tools can support them
- If you’re not sure about correct letter formation, then check
- Use a variety of planes – vertical includes whiteboards or easels, and horizontal includes books or tablets
- Most capital letters are generally written from top to bottom, left to right. Think E: down, across 1, 2, 3
- Ensure consistency across your school with a whole school handwriting policy
