Two Cambridge Books Receive 2017 Runciman Book Award

We are delighted to announce that Professors Ivan Drpić and Marc Domingo Gyax have jointly been awarded this year’s Runciman Book Award for Epigram, Art and Devotion in Later Byzantium and Benefaction and Rewards in the Ancient Greek City: The Origins of Euergetism, respectively.

The Runciman Award, presented for the first time in 1986, was named after Sir Steven Runciman, Byzantine scholar and the longest serving chairman of the Anglo-Hellenic League. Annually given for a work the majority or entirety of which is about the world of Hellenism, or an aspect of Greece, the award’s prestige is seen through the excellence of its four judges.   

This year’s chairman of the panel of judges, Dr Dionysios Stathakopoulos of King’s College London, praised Ivan Drpić’s Epigram, Art and Devotion in Later Byzantium: ‘This is a gripping book with wonderful illustrations that evoke the richness and complexity of the texts and objects explored in it.’ Dr Stathakopoulos also highly commended Marc Domingo Gygax’s Benefaction and Rewards in the Ancient Greek City: ‘This is an entirely new way of looking at the system of the gift in ancient Greece.’

The ceremony was held at the Hellenic Centre in London on 15 June.
