Teaching Pre-School Children: The Importance of Stories

With very young learners, stories work magic. The story, then, is not an external means of conveying language – it is more of a journey the child participates in by identifying with the protagonists, worrying about their survival, laughing in situations that give relief, and celebrating their successes. Herbert will show how using stories helps children make meaning of language in a natural way, enhancing the enjoyment of both children and teachers, and making children's learning swifter and easier.

Herbert Puchta has a Ph.D. in ELT Pedagogy from the University of Graz, Austria, and is currently Professor of English at the Teacher Training University in Graz. He has been a plenary speaker at a number of international conferences, and has conducted workshops and given seminars in over 30 countries. Herbert is a Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming. For almost two decades, he has carried out research into the practical application of findings from cognitive psychology to the teaching of English as a foreign language. Herbert has co-authored numerous course books for the teaching of English as a foreign language, as well as articles and resource books. His latest course books are Super Safari, Super Minds, and Cambridge English Empower, published by Cambridge University Press.
