Sounds fun, looks right! Engaging young learners with phonics – with Montse Watkin
Phonics teaching is an integral part of literacy curriculums in British, American and bilingual schools but how much phonics teaching takes place in other English language teaching contexts? EFL teachers often teach their young learners whole words, their pronunciation and meaning rather than breaking words down and looking at patterns to help with spelling or reading and writing.
Course books are catching up with the importance of phonics, as are teachers.
In this webinar, we will look at how integrating short, sharp, simple bursts of phonics in our lessons can develop confident young readers and spellers and lay a solid foundation for future language awareness and learning.
Montse Watkin has over 25 years of English teaching experience in a wide range of international contexts, teaching English to children, materials writing, and providing professional development to teachers.
She has worked for the British Council both in Spain (as part of the Bilingual Education Project) and abroad, in international schools and for NGOs.
During the last 15 years she has authored ELT and Science course books for major international publishers, one of which was an ELTons innovation award finalist. She is one of the authors of the Cambridge Fun Skills series.
