The History of N. V. Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken

The History of N. V. Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken

This is the first of a projected three-volume history of a multi-national company of major importance. This volume, originally published in Dutch in 1980, analyses the early economic and technological development of the Dutch electrical industry, prior to the establishment of the Philips company itself in 1891. The origins of Philips are placed firmly in their international scientific and industrial context, and Mr Heerding explains how the rapid rise of the company to a position of European and, ultimately, global importance was dependent upon a remarkable combination of technical, commercial and financial expertise. The significant early activities of the Philips family in, for example, commodity funding, banking and gas lighting are fully described, and clearly related to the company's later technological and marketing success within the manufacturing sector. Throughout the volume a formidable array of statistical and illustrative material supports Mr Heerding's argument, and the complete project will make a major contribution to the recent economic and business history of the western world.

Contemporary European History
: Journal
Contemporary European History covers the history of Eastern and Western Europe, including the United Kingdom, from 1918 to the present. By combining a wide geographical compass with a relatively short time span, the journal achieves both range and depth in its coverage. It is open to all forms of historical inquiry - including cultural, economic, international, political and social approaches - and welcomes comparative analysis. One issue per year explores a broad theme under the guidance of a guest editor. The journal regularly features contributions from scholars outside the Anglophone community and acts as a channel of communication between European historians throughout the continent and beyond it.

Established in 1994, Financial History Review has earned a solid international reputation as an academic journal committed to research of high scholarly standards. The Review deliberately seeks to embrace a broad approach to financial, banking and monetary history, which appeals to a wide audience of historians, economists and practitioners. We welcome different perspectives including analytical narratives, theoretically-inspired research, advanced empirical analysis, and the interrelations between history, finance, policy, culture and society. FHR is keen to provide a global perspective on national and international financial history and publishes research articles dealing with any historical period and country or regional area. The Reviews, through its section "The Past Mirror", is also an assiduous advocate of the relevance of history for a proper understanding of present financial and monetary developments, and no less importantly for informed and educated policy responses to them.
