Collaborative Activities in Advanced Adult ESL Classes
Date: Friday 30 October
Time: 17:00
Effective interactive activities for advanced adult ESL learners provide multiple exposures to academic vocabulary, elicit their opinions and experiences, and develop their reading, research, and note-taking skills. Ventures author Dennis Johnson will share his experience of developing such activities, and demonstrate how they can positively impact learning outcomes. Examples will be taken from Ventures Collaborative Activities for advanced-level English language learners transitioning to college and career programs.
Dennis Johnson had his first language-teaching experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in South Korea. Following that teaching experience, he became an in-country ESL trainer. After returning to the United States, he became an ESL trainer and began teaching credit and non-credit ESL at City College of San Francisco. He taught all levels of ESL at City College of San Francisco from 1977 until his recent retirement and served for many years as the ESL Site Coordinator there. Dennis is a co-author of the Ventures series and the demonstration teacher on the Ventures Professional Development DVD.
