Our Graduates: Emily

Emily Marchant

Author Services Manager

Department: Academic Publishing
I came to the Press straight from finishing a master’s degree in English in 2013. I knew I wanted to work in publishing but wasn’t sure which track to take, so the graduate scheme seemed like a good opportunity to explore the options. After the assessment day, I was really keen to work for Cambridge – the staff that interviewed me and that I met during the day were really friendly and welcoming.

The graduate scheme proved to be a really exciting time – we moved around different areas of the business, completing short-term projects and getting to experience a range of roles and teams. I was mainly in our English Language Teaching (ELT) division, but also got the opportunity to work in the central business areas and Academic publishing too. By the time the scheme came to an end, I had a much better sense of my interests and my strengths, and I’d met lots of great colleagues along the way.

Since my graduate scheme ended in 2014, I’ve been fortunate to hold two really exciting roles here at the Press. First I spent a year in ELT, working in a team that focuses on winning and managing our biggest clients, and adapting our publishing to suit them. Now I have moved across to the Academic publishing department and work as our Author Services Manager, running projects to improve author experience. It’s a challenging role with lots to learn but I feel like the graduate scheme prepared me well for the level of responsibility and multitasking required.

If you’re thinking about applying to the graduate scheme at the Press, I’d definitely encourage you to do so. It’s been a great experience and I feel very grateful to have been a part of it. There is such a huge range of roles in publishing, and the Press is a great place to explore those roles and start your career.
