Political, commercial, regional and tribal affairs are all covered and there is extensive material on the main cities of Jeddah, Yenbo, Mecca and Medina.

This important regional study provides historical research materials on the Hijaz province before its incorporation into the modern Saudi Kingdom. This work is therefore an essential complement to our companion works on Saudi and Hashimite history.

Records of the Hijaz addresses aspects of Ottoman rule, Turkish-Arab relations, administration under Egyptian occupation, and power struggles within the ruling regime. Political, commercial, regional and tribal affairs are all covered and there is extensive material on the main cities of Jeddah, Yenbo, Mecca and Medina.

    • Documentary Importance

An historical document collection establishing a firm research base from primary sources with evidence of key events, administration and development in the Hijaz region in the pre-Saudi period.

This publication uses hitherto little-known records from the 19th century, including recently released intelligence reports on the activities of the Sherif of Mecca in the 1880s. Records of the Hijaz establishes a firm research base for a turbulent and uncertain period of Hijazi history, including the Egyptian-Ottoman struggle; the tensions and culmination of the Arab Revolt; and the conflict between the Hashimite rulers and Ibn Saud.
