Author Julie Sanders wins British Academy prize

Professor Julie Sanders has been awarded the Rose Mary Crawshay Prize 2012 by the British Academy for her Cambridge book The Cultural Geography of Early Modern Drama.

The Rose Crawshay Prize was established in 1988 and is one of the most prestigious awards in international women’s scholarship. The prize is awarded each year to a woman who, in the judgement of the Council of the British Academy, has written or published an historical or critical work of sufficient value on any subject connected with English Literature.

The Cultural Geography of Early Modern Drama explores lliterary geographies, which is an exciting new area of interdisciplinary research. The book applies theories of landscape, space and place to early modern drama productions in the decades immediately before the English Civil War, covering works by key playwrights including Ben Jonson, John Milton and Richard Brome. Overall, the book encourages readers to think about geography as kinetic, embodied and physical, not least in its literary configurations, presenting a key contribution to early modern scholarship.
