Cambridge titles recognized by the World History Association and Royal Historical Society

Three titles published by Cambridge University Press have been honored for their significance in the field of history.

The World History Association has awarded its 2018 Bentley Book Prize, created in 1999 to recognize outstanding contributions to the study of world history, to Fahad Ahmad Bishara for A Sea of Debt: Law and Economic Life in the Western Indian Ocean, 1790-1950 and Lorelle Semley for To be Free and French: Citizenship in France’s Atlantic Empire.

A Sea of Debt has previously been awarded the 2018 Law and Society Association J. Williard Hurst Prize.

Additionally, the Royal Historical Society has named Communications and British Operations on the Western Front, 1914-1918 by Brian N. Hall the winner of this year’s Whitfield Book Prize. Established in 1976, this annual award is given to the best work on British or Irish history that is the author’s first sole book publication.

This is the second year in a row the Royal Historical Society has honored a title published by Cambridge University Press. The Smoke of London: Energy and Environment in the Early Modern City shared the award in 2017.
