Nathan Barker
Nathan was a resource designer for Underground Mathematics and is a secondary mathematics teacher with an emphasis on Key Stage 5 mathematics. Nathan has taught in a variety of schools in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and has experience teaching A Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics and the International Baccalaureate. He has also been a tutor for a series of FMSP problem solving classes before moving to teach in Jersey, The Channel Islands. Nathan studied Mathematics at Durham University and went on to do a PhD in Pure Mathematics at Newcastle University before completing his PGCE in Secondary Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. Nathan is also a mathematical researcher in algebra as well as working as part of a team of authors on the teacher notes for CUP 9-1 GCSE Mathematics book series in 2014.
Jess Barker
Jess Barker has several years' experience working in a variety of schools in Cambridgeshire before relocating to Jersey where she currently works at Jersey College for Girls with a responsibility for Key Stage 3 Mathematics. She has taught many different modules across three different exam boards and attended several Underground Mathematics workshops as a teacher from one of their partnership schools. Jess is currently the branch chair for MEI in Jersey and a member of the Mathematical Association Post 16 Subcommittee. Jess has a MEd from the University of Cambridge for her research on students' understanding of polynomial division. In 2014 Jess worked as part of a team of authors on the teacher notes for CUP 9-1 GCSE Mathematics book series.
Michele Conway
An Oxford University mathematics graduate with a wide knowledge of primary and secondary education, Michele spent 25 years teaching in secondary schools, latterly as a Head Teacher. As an experienced teacher and examiner, she enjoys explaining mathematical concepts and teaching strategies to students of all ages.
On leaving teaching, Michele worked for one of the awarding bodies, initially as a Subject Officer for mathematics, and then moved to Cambridge University Press as the Commissioning Editor for secondary mathematics. She is now an education and IT consultant, working with publishers, awarding bodies and teachers worldwide.
Stephen Ward
Stephen is a Mathematics teacher and Head of Sixth Form at Lancing College, West Sussex. He has eight years’ experience of teaching A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics to students of all abilities, as well as the International Baccalaureate. He also has A Level examining experience. Stephen has an MPhil in Mathematics Education from Cambridge University, which included a dissertation focused on teachers’ perceptions of proof and the pedagogical implications.
