Originally published in 1914, this book contains a transcription of leaves from three Arabic Qurans, purchased in Egypt in 1895. Lewis and Mingana date the sections to pre-Othmanic Islam, and each reveal surprising variations in the original Quranic texts. This book, which was controversial at the time of its first publication, will be of value to anyone with an interest in early Quranic palimpsests and Islamic history.

This is really an important historical book that any researcher interested in the topic of Quranic history would be delighted to see published. However, there is a major problem with this edition: All images in the book are NOT Quran. The images called Quran A (opposite page 68) and Quran C (opposite page 4) appear to be some religious commentary most likely Islamic. The image called Quran B (opposite page 40) appears to be a religious commentary most likely Christian. Although I failed to properly identify these 3 texts, there is no doubt in mind (that once memorized most of the Quran and still very familiar with it although I approach it as a secular now) that none of them came from the Quran. Any fellow at Cambridge who is capable of reading Arabic and is fairly familiar with the Quran (or even just capable of opening the Quran to the verses referenced) will attest that it is NOT Quran. I hope you can review and correct. I'd still give 4 stars due to the importance of this work. Sincerley Ahmad
