Classroom App FAQs
What does the app do?
The app allows teachers to extend the material in the textbook to a digital environment, with polling, surveys and photo flashcards. It is designed specifically for classroom use, to deeper engage students, and to help teachers quickly assess student learning.
When do I use the app? Do all the Interchange textbook exercises have a complementary app activity?
App activities currently exist for the Interchange Fifth Edition Unit Opener and each Grammar Focus in the textbook.
How do I begin an activity with the app?
When you open the app, you will be prompted to select Students or Teachers. Once you select Teachers, you will see a class code on the top menu bar. Ask your students to join using that code. Once your students are in, you can send activity questions directly to their devices. For activities that require the students to type answers, you will get their answers immediately.
What happens if a student enters the app as a teacher?
Without a teacher-generated class code, a student will not be able to enter into an existing class. You will also be able to see who in the class is missing. Be sure to ask that student to exit and re-enter as a student.
What kinds of activities can the class participate in on the app?
There are three types of activities on the app: Polling (multiple choice), Survey (fill-ins) and Photo Flashcards.
Can student answers be projected for the class to see?
Yes. Sharing survey results is a common practice in today’s classroom. You will be able to share your screen, and student results, if your classroom has a projection unit and the necessary hardware to connect your phone to the projector or whiteboard.
Is student work saved?
Student work is not saved.
Do I receive a report of student progress?
While you receive immediate responses to questions posted, there is currently no tracking system that monitors student progress over time.
Why would I use the app as opposed to a traditional textbook exercise?
Learners today are highly connected. Using a mobile device in the classroom allows learners to connect and engage in an activity, resulting in 100% active participation in the class activity.
Do all the students and the teacher need to have the app?
In order to collect responses from every student, every student, as well as the teacher, needs to have the app downloaded on a device. However, if not all your students have access, consider putting students in pairs to complete an activity. This will not only engage every learner, but also help build a collaborative classroom environment.
How do I make sure that students stay on task when using their devices?
There are several effective strategies you can employ when initiating an app activity. Encourage students to submit their answers within a given time frame. When you receive student responses, you will be able to assess whether all students have participated in the task. Additionally, with photo flashcard activities, you have the ability to pause the slideshow in order to set the pace of the activity if you wish. Encourage students to put their devices away when you are not working with an app activity.
Can it be used outside of the class?
The app is a classroom app, and can only be used during a class session.
Can it be used for virtual or online classes?
If the class meets synchronously, you can incorporate an app activity just like you would in a face-to-face classroom. However, if the class meets asynchronously, the app cannot be used.
Can it be used with the fourth edition?
The fifth edition of Interchange features new content, and app activities that extend the classroom walls. These app activities do not exist in earlier editions.
Can it be used with other courses?
The app correlates only with Interchange Fifth Edition.
