Onward stretches: XVIII ( 18)Avitta The start of this stretch is not marked. The meaning of the second distance figure (X) placed at the end of this stretch is unclear. To judge by BAtlas 32 E4, it seems improbable that a name has dropped out which called for an extra stretch between Risca and Avitta (note that the lithograph in ItMiller 887 erroneously adds a chicane to the Risca stretch). It seems most likely that the distance figure X was originally placed a little higher, and was attached to a stretch (now omitted) linking either THVRRIS and Avitta, or Risca and Sicilibba. On the ground, the figure would not be accurate, but either route still seems possible in principle. I illustrate missing linework for the second alternative, but this choice is made purely in order to create an illustration.
