                  <item id="stretchnote499">The distance figure begins XXX clearly enough; then comes a brief blank space, followed by two very faint figures and a stop. ItMiller 354 does not hesitate to read these two figures as VI, and thus to make the distance for the stretch 36; this is possible, but far from certain. From personal inspection of the parchment (March 2003), I am very uncertain that the first faint figure is "V", although the second may be "I". Perhaps these are figures that the copyist wrote and then for some reason erased. This distance figure is placed too close to the shoreline for any route linework to be added in between without overrunning one or even both.</item>
