No tempest at Prospero House, but plenty of rain!

No tempest at Prospero House, but plenty of rain!

Undeterred by the atrocious weather, almost 100 teachers found their way to Prospero House in south London to attend the all-day free event. Some had come from as far away as Swansea and Manchester and one brave soul all the way from Northern Ireland.

The day got off to a flying start with a plenary session from Nick Bilbrough, author of two popular titles in the Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers series. Nick's easy manner and fun activities soon had the audience joining in enthusiastically.

Ian Cook, Senior Marketing Manager, then introduced the audience to a new joint initiative with Cambridge ESOL, Cambridge English Teacher - an online community for English language teachers to connect and develop their skills.

Three elective sessions followed: Dr Andrew Blackhurst from Cambridge ESOL on Comparing Cambridge English: Advanced and IELTS; Dr Karen Ottewell from Cambridge University Language Centre with EAP courses are not just language coursesand Dr Martin Hewings on Challenges for students of EAP. Martin is co-author of our new integrated skills course for EAP, Cambridge Academic English.

The day was entertainingly closed with a plenary from Professor Michael McCarthy, looking at What's special about special types of English?

We were very pleased to welcome colleagues from LCL International Booksellers, who displayed and sold our books for us, and from Cambridge ESOL, who also brought an exhibition stand; and our Digital Sales Manager, Duncan Christelow, who was on hand to demonstrate our online and digital publishing.

One teacher from Swansea said she'd have been happy to come from Russia for such an event: praise indeed! Other feedback was equally enthusiastic, proving once again that a spot of rain doesn't put off our sturdy English teaching professionals!
